Just found your channel a couple weeks ago and I've been binging your "Raw Files" videos while working on my bikes in the garage. Thanks for the great content, Sir. Great finish as well. Take care.
This is good content. One of the better gravel race cams I’ve seen. Awesome you got past covid. Looks like covid ended my cycling. Been 3 years now, still can’t ride. Oh well, UA-cam bike cams for me I guess.
Great race after what sounds like a difficult off-season! I really enjoy your content: pre, during and post. It really gives a great feel for the experience. I'm sure it takes a lot of time and effort to produce this type of content but it feels really genuine, not over produced. Thank you very much and I wish you all the best (from a Minnesotan)!
Hi from Sacramento. Thanks for the full immersion into your race recap videos. You hit all the angles. I know there a lot of planning and hard work besides the race. Really great watches. One thing is I would like to see a top 20 finishers list at the end. Keep em coming!
Great footage and editing - Definitely captured the craziness! Glad I wasn't the only one with the "wrong" tires ... It was slippery AF out there and I've never seen so many crashes in one section of a race as happened on the whoops. The Utah course set up sounds sweet for Round 2 of the TC. Best of luck on back to back podium finishes in '23 and '24 and stoked for that recap vid as well!
Stellar ride, man! Love seeing and hearing about the pointier end of the race! Also, admittedly encouraging to know the loose trails did not discriminate between pros and amateurs 😅
Love the way you structure your videos, the film quality and music choices are top notch. Also glad that you left in the "race brain" part shows how deep you go and I laughed along with you.
Thank you! With each race we've dialed in the formula for filming/editing. Music is always a tough one as it's impossible to please everyone, but I spend a good amount of time picking each song!
2.2 xc tires seem to be the gold standard. not many frames can accommodate though. I guess I'll have to wait until Cervelo makes a frame with a 55 tire clearance ...
Great new kit! I’m a bit bummed that the organisation didn’t go over the route and fix the super dangerous sections. How hard can it be? Those ended several riders race In sure. Also that finish, super dodgy!… if you get caught in the final kilometre’s, don’t attack, sit on and leave it all for the finish. When you went early… I thought no.. 2 vs 1, they going to come back and punish you!( some road racing wisdom gained over two decades..) LOL. Oh I just saw Picock throw away Milan San Remo for the exact Same thing! You deserved that 13th.Glad your form is at a competitive level. Nice start to the season and some good opportunities to test the technical skills. Look forward to the next. Appreciate the good edit and footage.
Great ride Joe. I'm sat in the cold UK looking forward to your next video. Sorry, but the bee sting made me laugh; these things always seem to hit when you're cooked!
Really excellent video! Thanks for sharing your experience and insights. I can definitely see that a Pirelli M on the front would have made a difference. It does really well in those sand-over-hardpack conditions. Unless you were struggling with tire-spin issues on the rear, however, the H is still probably the right call (IMO). Keep, rocking, Joe! I hope to see you at BWR Cali in April.
Can you tell us about the sock height of your new kit please? 😉 And why you would not bring multiple tire size & tread options, just in case? And really great racing by the way!!
1x guy here…… for Sram 1x, I use a ceramicspeed OSPW. it’s zero gains watts wise, I don’t care who tells you otherwise….. however the gain is spring tension options. Which there are three. Worth the expense. Even on the MTB mullet setup if you went that way. But Especially on a regular or xplor Sram rear derrerrrrrer. Hope that helps 1by Sram peeps.
I saw a lot of dropped chains out there so this is interesting! My k-edge chain keeper seemed to do its job though as I had no issues with the chain coming off and shifting was great the whole race!
Thank you for the fantastic video. I've never raced a bike however I've done a lot of ultra running, especially in the McDowells. I'm so familiar with all the rocky skree that litters the trails and it's easy to wash out on that stuff. I think you handled it like a pro. I'm curious though...you were tailing a rider at about the 16 minute mark and you wanted to get around them to catch up with the lead pack. In running, we just announce we're passing you and you kind of just let someone go around you. Is it the same in cycling? With everyone packed so tight at times, do you ever find yourself throwing an elbow, or getting shoved by another rider? This was the first time I discovered so, so I hit that subscribe button to watch some more videos.
I rode a Trek Checkpoint in the 2023 BWR and then a Canyon Grzl in the 2024...the checkpoint just isn't slack enough for the singletrack (67degrees) vs the Grizl (71 degrees).
What was the tire consensus for these courses? Coming from Pathfinders last year to Cintuarato H’s this year. Most of my riding is straight hardback gravel - minimal sandy and loose over hard
Just this one I’d recommend more tread, gravel m’s from Pirelli in 45 is what I’ll do next year most likely! 90% of the rest of races I’ll run the h’s, BWR cali I will run somthing similar to the path finder with a slick in the middle and probably a 40c since I’m 172lbs. I ran 35’s last year in cali and i think 40’s would feel better
How do the speedplay pedals handle dust/dirt? I've read they are not gravel friendly! Looking to lighten my setup for BWR CA and convert SPD/MTB setup to road shoes/pedals.
They are totally fine as long as it’s not wet, any kind of mud and they will clog up making it hard to clip back in and get out of them. I hit some mud last year in calli and had some issues for just one small part of the course. Always be sure to lube them up before your race and now and again in training! Main reason I use them is they are a more stable platform and easier on my knees with the extra float!
I’m planning on these same exact tires I ran here! I’ve allways ran 40’s in Utah, but these 45’s felt much smoother and they are also the tires Brenden Johnston won with last year. It will be nice to have for the last singletrack when your tired and sore and trying not to flat as well!
@@TJA-AZ I think you’ll be ok with the pathfinders! It’s not as slippery on the mtb trail there, a bit more rocky so extra volume is nice, but I believe they are removing the middle section of singletrack that was new last year, so 40’s would be ok, but if you’ve got 45’s that’s what I’d reccomend (depending on if they keep the course about the same as previous years!
Hey Joe, I’m a cyclist and musician in Minneapolis but I lived in Mankato for college as well. I performed at a wedding a few years back in Mankato for a family with last name Goettl, any relation? Don’t wanna post too many details. Great videos!
Hi David, I have had a few cousins get married in Mankato in the past years, I wasn’t able to make it back for them so I can’t confirm. There are many many Goettl’s in the area that are distant relatives!
Probably the Pirelli gravel m’s. I’ve tried a lot of tires and have had the best luck durability wise with Pirelli! I’m 170lbs so I need a little stronger tires than other pros!
@@benconnor4848 my bikes limit is 45mm which I think was good, especially with the road start, getting into the dirt in 11th saved me a lot of energy. However, if I could fit 50’s I might have gone with that!
It’s the older chest mount, I have the closest thing to what I use linked in my Amazon store in the description. I like that it doesn’t have any padding so it fits under the jersey better. I wear a light base layer first, then go pro mount, then jersey! I’ll be making a video about how I set up my camera soon!
Race footage is KILLER. Thanks for putting this together. Putting us right in the mix.
Yeah… couldn’t agree more! Very well put together!

"so here we are. One year after...last year...". That was hilarious! Great race man!
Thank you for that, This was my second ever gravel race. I am an old MTB racer. Had a blast and your video really gets you in the action.
Nice video and strong ride, congrats! I appreciate getting insight into your pre-ride planning and logistics. Thank you-
Thanks for the effort to share an awesome and challenging race !!!
Well done. Nice to see the improvement, both in your riding and production!
Awesome video! Thanks for sharing

Did you say “Cholula cactus”!? Choi-ya..
Classic. Nice vid!
Haha whoops 😅. Thank You!
I caught that right away and LOL'd. All good! The best advice for out of towners is: don't pet the fuzzy cactus!
Great job and content!

Love it! Great work.

Lol, I've been stung on the nose twice in mtb races! Crashed both times! Great video Joe! Tough day for many.
Ouch! luckily I kept it on two wheels and the adrenaline from the race kept the swelling at bay!

Thank you, there was some tire spin on the rear and it was sliding a bit so I will do m’s on both next season! Come say hi if you see me out in Calli!
In that case, Ms at both ends sound like a good choice. I’ll definitely look for you in CA. Cheers!

Those whoops looked pretty wild.

I don’t believe too many people finished in groups, bad luck on our part, but I did like the sandpit finish from last year better!

It's spelled TRIPLE. You spelled it incorrectly a few times.
They are actually using the flemish spelling for the Belgian heritage, so it is in fact the "BWR Tripel Crown"
