Also the WiiU came with the GamePad.
Looks more like that new Sony product can't stand on its own and is an extra expense (unless nice Sony decides to bundle all future PS5 sales with that new thing, without additional cost).
Is this about remote play, didn’t they exist since PSP with PS3? PSVITA has some features like cross play. Don’t know what it called, but it allows you to play some PS3 games, using Psvita as another controls scheme for little big planet or whatever it called, just like the Wii U gamepads feature, but it is more like a tech demo than an actual game mandatory usage.
@@enricojeremias5425 I like the idea that MadLittlePixel gave on his video over this news, he gives a pretty neat idea of a "History of PlayStation handheld" with the hability of buying games from previous PlayStation consoles, except for PS4, having it's own PS Store or, at least letting you play your PS+ Premium subscription retro games. I think that would be pretty cool, of course, a dedicated new device would be preferable but, this would definitely be better than just a PS5 Remote Play box which, I doubt many people at all can see value in something that can only do that when they already have their phones and, computers.

I agree! Sony really needs to just throw caution into the wind and make a new dedicated handheld already.
This idea would be doomed to fail, because on top of buying the handheld you would need to buy a $500 console just to use it.
It's currently being reported that the PSVR 2 is also doing terribly right now as well, so perhaps Lyin' Jim Ryan does not, in fact, know what he's doing.

If the rumors are true and I'm saying with a big IF that Sony's new hand held will be remote play only on the PS5. Sony will be making the biggest blunder in gaming history. There's no way around it.
This. Making this new handheld only capable of being connected with a PS5 and online access only defeats the purpose of it being portable. Instead of working the Vita alongside this new handheld SONY decides this is a better choice? Yes, they are rumors for now but if they end up being true I am not spending my money on this one.

Honestly if it wasn't requiring a Wi-Fi connection to game at all being that this would be a remote play only device, and we're more like the switch I think Sony would really be on to something here. Of course that would take a whole rebranding of the PS5 in order to do so.

If Sony is truly planning a "remote play" device that works only with a PS5 and a specific internet connection, the world will be as happy as when the company tried to shut down the PS3 and Vita PSN.

I'll be here, watching the carnage unfold with my Steam Deck in my hands, the same library that I've been building up for the last 10 years and Free Online.
This is very true, especially when you consider the fact that you can play many Sony games on the Steamdeck already.

My thoughts are the same of Enrico Jeremias. A device that needs a console to work, that focus only on remote playing, not cloud gaming, it's just like Wii U gamepad.
Maybe having an "Wii U Gamepad" Sony could evolve that Second Screen feature they have since PS4 and wasn't very used.
It seems they are just focusing on different interactions with PS5
I think if This were A downloadable device for games people would be a lot more open to it, as is though I just don't see this having mass appeal.

When they got rid of PSNow and attached cloud games to the highest tier of PS+, I lost all hope for cloud gaming on Playstation. I haven't tried remote-play, on a PS5. Do you currently lose DS5 features or does it not even work with a DS5? Can you remote play to a TV, either through Smart TV apps or a tablet's HDMI out (I believe you can through a PS4 but I could be wrong and didn't look it up)?
Unless this device connects to a TV, supports some games locally offline or offers controller functionality not currently available, I'm not sure I see the point. Maybe they've got some deal to buy prepaid 4G Sim cards, because that worked out so well in the past.
What is PS5 remote-play like, and what could be improved or which device could be replaced, through a dedicated device?
Honestly not really much at all in my opinion. Especially since you can play a lot of Sony party games on the Steamdeck already.

Oh dude I know what you mean! Especially on the first model. You actually had to remove the battery in order to change the game. They obviously did a lot of research back then. 🤣
Why not a handheld PS5? That could run games on 900 or 1080p. Make it more affordable than regular PS5.

After taking some time trying to figure out on this device, I think I’ve come to a conclusion. The reason this isn’t a dedicated handheld device is because Nintendo switch made it impossible for stuff like that to exist and let’s be honest, the idea of having the home console experience on the go is cool. And honestly the basic concept of a ps5 handheld remote play device sounds lit. Like imagine playing some of your ps5 and even ps4 games on the go. Now this is the theory part of my comment; what if this device has some storage where whatever games you already have on your ps5, you can download them to your remote play handheld device and if you don’t have enough space you can stream it via remote play. This is Sony testing the waters to return to the handheld market now that the Steam Deck and other Pc handheld systems have grown and if this ps5 handheld device were to be a success, it would convince Sony to make a true PS Vita successor for the PS6 era or even make it a hybrid console
Honestly if this was able to have some sort of download feature then yes I agree, I think people would be a lot more open to it. I just fear that if this thing is exclusively remote play, it'll struggle.

If Sony does make another handheld system it has to be it's own system and the only thing that it has to do is enable you to play your PS Vita and PS 4/5 games on the go and give us the same features that the PS Vita and PSP had

I can play my PS5 remote play on my Steam Deck already and it actually works flawlessly with the most unnoticiable lag i've ever had for any remote play device. Makes playing Genshin Impact on the toilet a breeze lol

I have a feeling that once this handheld device launches, it'll first be a remote play device, and then a future update it'll have game/cloud streaming.
I hope it would have enough internal storage or external storage for downloading games like psp/psvita/ps1.
Just to test and see, there are people who would want a handheld device (psvita2) that plays games rather than streaming/remote play.

Innoway, it makes sense to not have a separate game ecosystem for the handheld, like Nintendo, merging their handhelds and consoles with the switch and remember a big part of the vitas downfall was lack of developer support for games because they focused on the PS4 instead of the vita, and if they only have to make one type of game, the handheld will be supported this time around thoughts?
I can certainly see where you're coming from there. However I still think it's a bad decision on their part if it's true that it won't function at all without a PS5. That's going to get quite costly for those who don't own one. It kind of feels like the Sega CD and the 32x all over again if that ends up being the case. At least in my opinion.

I hate it. The rumors said it's gonna be about 8 inch. Also it's focusing on being remote play device that still need a PS5 to work (again it's rumors). Damn, Sony that's simply just another WiiU pad (but better?).
Handheld now days getting bigger and bigger (with big performance too of course). I miss stand alone handheld like the old days with their own exclusive games. The best thing is almost all of the handhelds are portable, you can literally put them in your pocket, even PS Vita can fit in some pocket, LOL.
I really do feel that this all just boils down to Sony wanting to get into the handheld market, but too afraid to go all in.
Why not make it a handheld with a full and open SDK. Basically what they did with the Vita anyways after the first 15 months…. A static streaming device is just a boneheaded move.

So it's gonna be a streaming handheld, by Sony. There is absolutely no way they'd skip the opportunity to capitalize on including it with the rest of the "handheld family", they WILL make this as a PSP/Vita successor of sorts and may even have a similiar name and look the part. Sony continues to repeat the mistakes of the past: they are not pouring enough resources into their handhelds. For OG PSP it was it's lack of buttons, for Vita it was miserable 3rd party support which ultimately killed it. And now they're being so cheap/dumb that they'll make a device with the bare minimum specs for streaming, and 100% reliant on wifi/mobile Hotspots. They're cheap for the bare minimum, and stupid for not realizing nobody will buy this, and those that stream already use their phones which is a superior solution due to mobile data and convenience of not carrying a switch-sized handheld, the backbone offers the same thing but more portable and with better/more reliable connectivity. Idiots!!! No one's going to buy it! If they were smart they would make their own version of switch, an android sort of device with an extremely powerful mobile processor like Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which can emulate up to Switch. It would be way more powerful and handle way more ports than the switch. Oh well, if they insist on streaming this handhelds going to be dead on arrival. Hope they don't bastardize the PSP family by trying to compare/name it after them.
Edit: I don't like streaming due to input lag, many other people have the same issue and won't be interested in a device like this. Online shooters are unplayable when streaming so I have no use for this.
I definitely agree with you on not being a fan of streaming games. I think if they were simply to make this handheld be able to play downloaded PS4 games and whatnot, they'd really be on to something there. Maybe we can at least hope for some cloud gaming to be thrown into the mix.
I'm feeling they'll end up having the Vita 2 in like 3 years, but are waiting to match whatever the Switch 2 is, buying time with these streaming abominations.

Exactly! I just don't think it's feasible in this day and age. Now if they were to revamp the PS5 and make it a more on the go device like the Nintendo switch, something like that could work. But having to rely on the internet, not a good move in my opinion.
I don’t know why they would test the waters with a device that makes no sense and no one would want. What kind of accurate information could they possibly bet from that? They be better off making a mini handheld emulation machine with a bunch of their older rim titles for under a hundred bucks as a way to test the waters
I think it all boils down to Sony not having enough faith that a handheld they would make would be successful. They may even worry that they've lost a lot of good faith with the community they did have because of the whole PS Vita abandonment situation.
I honestly feel bad for the Wii U. It’s remote play feature is something that is becoming increasingly liked through newer things that focus on those. Even if this rumored handheld only works with a ps5 people will still eat it up. But Nintendo ended up being too ahead of it’s time with the Wii U. At least we got an amazing hybrid with the Switch from it. Hopefully the next switch device is just an external GPU the switch docks in.
I honestly could see that being the next eventual step for them. They had gold with this innovation, so there's no need to reinvent the wheel in this case in my opinion.

I think it'll be a handheld gaming system, better than the SteamDeck, and I'm assuming Sony will have VR Display Glasses and extra controllers. The codename "Q-lite" sounds like it's a PS VR system, but is a newer generation. Wouldn't that be neat?!

Sony said that the smart phone gaming market was too lucrative in too saturated for a handheld dedicated system to make sense. That is why they killed the PS Vita. If you years later, Nintendo releases Nintendo switch. Literally a portable Consol. That’s so many who wanted to buy. You were wrong Sony. Give us another portable Sony game system.

A dedicated remote play device would make sense for Sony. It would be a Nintendo Switch without the need too lower the specs of the PS5 to work as a hybrid handheld. It would also allow them to make a new handheld without having to worry about licensing/making/marketing/etc. new games for both a dedicated handheld and a home console at the same time. (Which is 1 of the biggest issues they had when trying to keep the Vita afloat) I would be fine with a remote play device as long as it could stream anywhere! Anytime! Not Wifi Only. And as long as you don't have to buy your games twice for each device or anything stupid like that. It could be a day 1 pick up for me tbh. It could even compete with the Xbox Cloud Gaming services. If you could connect too your own console anywhere and play your own games anytime. (Don't get me wrong I'd prefer a Vita 2 or a PS Switch and I love/prefer physical media but imo this is Sony's best move too stay relevant. They get to keep the awesome performance of the PS5 and add the portability that helped the Switch change the game.

Hey it's all good, although I still think this is kind of an odd idea since you need a Wi-Fi signal to play the games, I do respect your arguments there!
A 2 in one system approach would be best for remote play and offline use. Like yeah, you could stream your PS5 games, or you could download downgraded portable versions(I pray for Physical retail copies) as many games are still released for base model PS4. I would imagine the graphics will jump from the Almost PS3 quality visuals (like what we saw on Vita) to Almost PS4 Pro visuals which would be ground breaking for on-the-go technology. It would be weird timing, though, because the Switch has put the Tech on portable gaming to Almost PS4-PS4 Launch graphic fidelity standards which is still impressive for portable tech. It’s what I’m imagining, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
I believe its actually just going to be a secondary screen for the ps5, basicly ps5 controller with a display.

It would be great if it still had removable memory storage options and allow cross play/download though. If it's able to grab all Vita/PSP games and let you redownload all your old purchases, that would give a boost in adoption rate.
Honestly if Sony could find a way to make this new handheld not require a Wi-Fi signal and just be able to play on the go whenever we want, I honestly would be a lot more interested.
I'll believe it when I see it. Patents date all the way back to 2017 with nothing coming from it. But I would not like the current rumored "platform" due to not having its own titles and / or download bc titles.
I don't blame you on that one Andrew. Just imagine how costly that's going to be for people who don't even have an interest in the PS5 to begin with, if this rumor ends up being true about it not functioning without it.

I would prefer the above with it playing its own titles or at least download older generations' games to play.
Not interested in a cloud based PS5 player when I can do that already on my phone or Anbernic RG505 (gotta love those Chinese handhelds) why pay £2-300 for a dedicated Sony handheld that won't even have its own software catalogue.

Sony is making another Sony decision. 🙄After the way Sony mistreated the Vita, I hold no confidence in them in future handhelds. I'll keep my Vita as long as possible but, handheld PC gaming is now the way to go!
A part of me kind of wonders if Sonia's afraid of that very fact. The reason why they keep playing it safe is because they fear too much that they lost a good amount of Good Will with the dedicated handheld gamers, they even if they did give us a proper new device many people wouldn't trust them anymore. New Handheld Playstation should at least play PSP, PSVita, PS1 (maybe some PS2 too) games via emulation and upscaled. Then at least they can call it legacy station with support for Remote Play.
Honestly at this point? It would be great if Sony were to make a dedicated handheld that plays PS4 games. They would more than likely have to make it a digital only device, but at least it'd be a dedicated handheld.

What James has Chinese emulators? I don’t think another true handheld console. I don’t think even Nintendo was happy with the 3DS and having to discount it. I don’t think causal people want to pay Nintendo Switch prices or Steam Deck prices or more for a handheld. The future is still in the cloud.
I do have a few I got to admit. Some are better than others, but those third-party Chinese handhelds can actually be pretty decent depending on the brand.
Of course they wouldn't be a standalone handheld gaming device, just more of a Logitech G Cloud style of a handheld device. As you would have expect, very low interest turnout from the dedicated handheld users (like me). Looks like incompetent Sony just dug up their PlayStation Portable and PlayStation Vita's tomb just to insult and milking them like the greedy Mr. Krabs they truly are.

When I heard it was a Remote play handheld, my excitement deflated faster than your Root Bear :( Just give me a PS5Portable, surely there should be enough power now for that. I would genuinely buy it instead of keep my anti-PlayStation stance.

I would buy it if I could download the ps5 games to the handheld and take them with me on the go. Then upload my save and start back up on my PS5 at home. If its just a remote play feature I would most likely pass.

We can only hope that this was all a misinformation due to the fact the info is a rumour leak and not the full scope. I mean, at this point, let's stop calling this stupid device a handheld console. It isn't as of right now. It's just a new PS5 peripheral or you can just call it a PS5 controller with a screen. I think only a device that can play games on it natively and is portable should be called a handheld console. I don't think Sony is even testing the waters. I think it's just another stupid idea of theirs to say they have a handheld console but not actually make a proper one. We can only hope they're not really that stupid and will go back to the drawing board to make a proper handheld that can play it's own games and do remote play or that the leaks did not have the full info and they only saw the part that stated the new Handheld console device could do remote play. For now, let's stick with calling this a PS5 controller with a screen for this instead of constantly convincing ourselves that this is a handheld console.

My PS5 is more dusty than my Vita. Why? Cause Halo on my Series X is what I main at home. And Vita is what I rock on the go. I want to wait and see if this will play proprietary Hardware games for offline performance. If not, then, yeah, I’ll just get a Steamdeck.

@@PSVitaat2am I really don’t want Sony to mess this up with a PlayStation Live (Google Stadia) debacle. The Tech has to be superb and flawless for this to appeal to gaming consumers. PSP sold itself as a portable God-of-War/ Star Wars/ Final Fantasy machine and the Vita… had… uh… Nathan Drake, Killzone Demo tech which looked promising, but the pricing, bs proprietary memory cards made it a hard sell for 3DS/ Switch/ Android/iOS enthusiasts in the West who saw their gaming peripherals as the easier choice, despite the stunning power and hardware Sony offered. Sony’s pitch needs this to be a pick up and play offering, that doesn’t leave the consumer wanting more or feeling like they’re missing out on the ease of use factor that the other mobile gaming devices have to offer.
Sony has a big library for PS/PS2/PS3/PS4/PS5/PSP/PSVita games and they want to produce a cloud gaming device?... Why? I mean...Why? That is just stupid :( . I hope they bring something better to the table. I saw reviews and opinions of the Logitech cloud gaming handheld and according to those, even with an internet connection, the concept is just mediocre.
I really wish Sony could finally realize what made the Nintendo Switch so popular. I mean, a working eshop, a big screen and a wide variety of games, with a not proprietary memory card are already enough to see the better concept there.
It almost makes me wonder if Sony is a bit worried about any handheld they work to developed being hacked. It's just a hunch, but they went overboard with the expensive proprietary memory cards for the PS Vita, so it does make me wonder. That along with the fact that Jim Ryan just doesn't care for the past. 🤷♂️

@@PSVitaat2am same. I assume they realize people want portable now more than ever. All they need to do is outperform the switch. Maybe hit steamdeck power at the very least. And mass producing they can lower costs or if they partner with someone. So a scaled down ps5 OS with scaled down games and price of 299 if possible.. theyd sell like crazy. Its easy to scaled down pc games which is what ps5 is now anyway

Yes exactly! I do realize we're in a more internet heavy World these days than compared to a even a decade back, but still having to rely on it just to play a handheld is a bad move in my opinion.

making another dedicated handheld is probably unfeasible at this point. i see this as a new PS5 controller with remote play features. it's as close to a new handheld as you can get. depending on price and features, I might consider buying this.
The price is definitely going to be a factor in whether or not this is successful or not, since we're already going to need a PS5 to be able to use it. Hopefully it's not too costly. 🤔

Very true! Considering that you'll need to buy a PS5 just to be able to even use this device, that's not even taken into consideration what the price of the handheld will actually be to go along with it. Might be a bit too pricey for a lot of Gamers out there. We could be seeing a PS Vita memory card situation all over again!

What I worry about is that they may have lost too much Goodwill with the gaming community at this point.

Yep pretty much. And even if that weren't the case, just imagine how expensive this will be for gamers who aren't even interested in having a ps5, yet want to play those games on the go. Going to be mighty costly I would imagine.

If we get something similar to what is being reported, it will be a huge bust. Don't even bother. Doesn't interest me in the least. We don't need a streaming machine, we need a system that runs games natively, portably, and we need them to support the system.
I agree with you on all counts Joseph! If this handheld device at least were able to download the games onto it without having to be constantly connected to the internet, and I think there's a chance it would be a decent portable device. The waste only supposedly implementing it though according to these rumors is doomed to fail.

I surprise family members that are gamers with using Remote Play or Wii U Off TV Play most people (recent remote play video comment section for various responses) don't look at the PSP/Vita remote play support game lists and treat the systems as their own or probably even know the Xbox One has Remote Play either. Cloud may be coming but still a digital only handheld sure but remote play not likely.
Ask any tech person and they think a remote play handheld is dumb and it is. To me it's what fans think without actually using remote play why do a Wii U Gamepad like device but that has no relevance to the PlayStation console other than another device when people have phones to do that already do people get how this tech actually works?
Cloud handhelds are Android they aren't cloud only paperweights and they know that because besides the OS Android side why sell a product people dump. Otherwise why would Sony have Android and iPhone support for Remote Play huh and the iPhone branded grips think about that why would they bother with a partnership like that to have a handheld also. Is the tech possible yes do they plan on it I doubt it. They have PC and PSVR why would they make a handheld now. To compete with others, why would they need to in the handheld space again when phones are there for remote play. Fans don't think very far ahead I feel just oh more handheld news sigh. I'll believe it when I see it.
PS5 remote play support makes sense so did PSP/Vita for PS3/4 it's not like it isn't going to happen but just that offered just remote play I mean that's not likely.
The Wii U made sense for what it's doing of dual screens, asymmetrical multiplayer and Off TV Play aka Remote Play it's the same thing. The Vita had remote play for dual screen stuff in Playroom even if the smartphones and tablets got a bit more and bit better support for it then of course Playlink came out and that party game line with smartphones and tablets for casuals.
PSVR also is a dual screen approach you can have assymetrical multiplayer in Playroom VR for the 4 v 1 in the headset or tthe same thing cast twice again like a Wii U, like a Vita in remote play normally then the Playroom DLC, like a DS/3DS could if Devs made it so.
Did anyone use Playlink either the EyeToy like PS4 causal audience thing with smartphones I didn't because well it's party games and not something I care about but still it's a thing no one that's a gamer talks about compared to Move, PSVR and EyeToy but they did give it more support then the Vita PS4 implementation (mostly remote play) and even then I find many games could be just PS Camera based but aren't.
Doesn't need a touchscreen for choices in the Until Dawn Dev's game that's for sure but UNO and a few others benefit for dual screens but sadly with a smartphone because well everyone has one no one had a Vita clearly so selling Vitas for Playlink wouldn't have worked as well just like a Udraw tablet it can get confusing/inaccessible for people.
I thought a Wii U UNO would be great and we'll seems it's a thing with Playlink then instead.
The way remote play is (a device with a router and console of PS4/5 not the same as cloud with PS+ which is to servers and can skip consoles entirely like Stadia and Luna but has access to the console for the sake of apps. Sony could have a TV app instead like Xbox does on Samsung TVs which I have tried a few times) but for a handheld is dumb.
You have the PS4 app to remote play PS5 via an update a year or two ago I never use it but it's always there. PC and Phones. Let alone Android handhelds advertising cloud are just that Android supported and have a place they aren't paperweights without cloud access.
They have PC/PSVR why would they want to waste production when they save money digitally for PC and working on PSVR to have peripherals and physical games there and a part of the VR market to themselves on consoles.
A remote play handheld sounds like what fans think Sony would do not what Sony would do unless they really want to waste money which I don't see why they would. If Sony did then I doubt them seriously being awful to customers with a paperweight or have mixed phone support and a handheld for messaging.

Do I want a Switch like an Evercade a console, handheld but with a sync between them but same hardware inside both sure do I see the Switch 2 being that no.
While tech is capable these days. Why would they focus on Android support in 2019, iPhone and branded grips for it and show it off in their Remote Play video even if the comments show how confused people are, Vita comments as you do get of course with remote play related things, people new to remote play as a concept that didn't know it's been around since PS3 and Sony made it first because they are new to PlayStation or gaming likely. I could go into Sony attempts at many things they did first but I cut that out.
A remote play handheld makes no sense in the market. While Pocket PCs (Sony Samsung and others were there in 2006 and prior making them) did prior they came around with GPD Win devices over the years or Steam Deck again.
A new handheld would be cool for sure. I don't care for their current IPs personally but if they did sure but a remote play device makes no sense it's worthless. I mean the Vita had PS Now or otherwise access in the past so people got a taste of cloud handheld there, besides whatever Online on phones offered even if most likely a viewer app I think, still just not anymore whenever they cut that support I don't remember.

@@PSVitaat2amVery big I can't help myself sorry XD Many things can be learned from how marketing or games or cool tech was just not well explained or interesting to customers some things can get compared to tech enthusiasts. Some things fill in gaps of what companies think and what tech was going and stopped so I just form conclusions around old tech and old prototypes of tech gaming or tech.
Didn't even know how Just Dance games worked but with Kinect or the Wiimote or the PS Camera for PS4. HD camera is just a webcam on PS5 no VR, no other tracking at all. Xbox One Kinect got used for HoloLens and medical stuff so there's that there days gamers don't care really.
Clearly other commenters know their remote play stuff but being first many people don't care, late or good marketing matters. From dual screen tablets, to Pocket PCs, to PS Home to Ngageby Nokia and Xperia Play how many people really care.
Barely hearing about Playlink even made me realise who actually gets remote play or even heard of it. I only see it in bargain bins so....
Thinking about the DS how many cared for the Dual screens let alone the Wii U making it wireless besides the name issue. Most casuals don't care if it's something a tech enthusiast does. XD or people into weird gimmicks like me. XD
But yeah I think people are out of the loop on remote play,. Is it possible yes but they could just do a TV app like Microsoft did (Microsoft have up on that prototype box for streaming after all of people remember that) with Samsung.
Besides Sony made the remote play Vita exclusive until 2019 after all, then Android support then iPhone with the phone grips, and PC support of remote play. Mobile games and TVs/consoles, they focus on the western audience (mobile in Japan may be what it is of course) so I see mobiles and consoles make sense while a console only VR space suits them and those willing to experience it will others won't.
Sure I'm not a WipEout Rush fan but they will focus on phones I think just not like the PS Mobile and Vita back in the day.

Zero interest in either a cloud-gaming handheld, or a WiiU GamePad for PS5. Seems like a waste of hardware development money if Sony is really working on one of these. Hard pass for me.
Me as well! I think if they had made a portable handheld that plays PS4 games via a download, or any other method that doesn't require the internet, more people would have gotten behind this idea.
