Its pretty much a portable device turned non portable and having to keep on the system so using double the amount of data and if you have it plugged in while playing double the amount of electricity. Very disappointing.

this announcement broke me. i feel like a much smarter move would be to make a new Steam Deck like device that can portably play digitally downloaded ps4 games and lower intensity ps5 games, with all the dualsense controller features.

I hope to gosh they release an annoucement that ps4 games will be downloadable and playable at a later date otherwise i feel like this console is dead on arrival.

Yep! I think that the money they were printing from the PS4 and concentrating too hard on PSVR, would have helped the Vita sell more.

Sony's decisions lately have been ticking me off but THIS? This takes the cake. I already had a feeling the leak was true but there was a small part of me that was hoping for a Psp or Psvita successor...😢

@@PSVitaat2am the steam deck is the psp2. It plays all third party games, ps games and even xbox games. I don't think a new sony handheld will be able to compete with that

I'm hoping this is just a stepping stone to get back into the portable market. Like a test to see how their new controller technology would work in a portable form factor. Like maybe they are going to try and make a steam deck competitor 2 or 3 years down the road. That's just wishful thinking though.
That is a very positive way of looking at it. Maybe if this thing is miraculously successful Sony might change their mind on a true dedicated handheld. I guess you never know.

A suggestion to all former sony fans like me: If financially possible, sell all your Sony products (with exception of Vita and it's games). Invest all the money in a Steam Deck. If you have 2 vitas like me, frame one of them on your wall, put a nice looking frame with some quality glass, our Vitas deserve such treatment, and hold on to the other Vita, because we just can't stay away from it for too long, just like that ex. And forget about Sony. Do not expect nothing from them anymore. We are on our own for quite some time now, and from us, Sony deserves nothing but hate.

Been doing this, though I only have the PSTV with a DS3 in my home rather than two Native Vitas. I rebought a lot of my PS4 and PSVita collection on Steam where possible.
I don't think I could ever park with my good old PS Vita and PS2.
Good video! James! Wow! The news was going great for the PS Vita and now this! Not too happy about this! Number 1, I do not own a PS5 system yet, Number 2, I do not have a great WI-FI connection, I was was playing a PS4 game this afternoon and it kept going off on me! Darn internet and another cable company, that I will not mention! 😢 The cost of this device too, is going to be a lot I think!

Yesterday I saw they announced the newest Ratchet and Clank for PC, and it's Steam Deck verified. Maybe I should just buy a Steam Deck now just to pretend it's a new Playstation handheld, because Project Q looks awful.

usually most remote play devices have insane latency but what if Sony has figured out how to mitigate the latency that it feels one to one as if it was natively playing? We have to be opened minded to the quality of its remote play function before we judge it.
It’s not really a handheld. It’s a PS5 controller with a screen and wifi. It doesn’t make sense for me but I can see the potential use cases. It’s not even trying to target people who don’t own a PS5, it’s an add-on, an accessory, not a product of its own. And for the type of PS5 gamers who have their console attached to a big TV that their partner or family also wants to use… I can definitely see the appeal. But it should be as comfortable and lightweight as a dualsense and have excellent battery life and be sensibly priced to compete with the “phone controller” solutions at the low end but there are also Android handhelds with good controls that can do remote play perfectly well - and also stream from PCs and all the cloud services too. So ultimately it has to be perfect at the one thing it can do but even then it’s hard to justify its existence.

I kinda don't disagree with Sony for this one. While I wouldn't mind a dedicated Sony handheld now more than ever, Sony would be competing against the Switch, Steam Deck, Ayn Odin, Logitech G Cloud, OneXPlayer, Retroid Pocket, Ayaneo, GPD and soon to be releasing ASUS Rog Ally. Many of which can run emulators of PS2 games and have many beloved Sony titles. A new handheld system would likely be more dead in the water than the Vita. This new Q Handheld is a low risk, high reward for them to stick with their bread and butter and not take a major loss if it fails.

You do bring up some good points there. I still think Sony could have a good chance of succeeding with the handheld market being so hot so long as they actually supported the system and brought out those big-name titles. At least in my opinion.
I don't know about high reward. I'd like to see polling of how many Playstation owners actually use remote play at least once a week. They've been trying to tough this feature ever since PS3 and I don't think they have really got people to buy into it. I think only Vita Diehards really got into it and even then it seems rarely. I don't think Project Q is going to be something that pushes somebody to buy a ps5

I think Sony doesn’t want people to use their Vita for remote play anymore. I’m surprised the store isn’t closing again. They have been systematically closing it for years now.

This is the consumer base in the market that Sony is planning to make a quick profit from. Only possible way this makes sense.
After the C-bomb struck my digital PS3 games and PS4 in general, then the PS5 price hikes, I adamantly refuse to support their home consoles any further. (Especially now the GOAT Ratchet and Clank is coming to PC next month), so unfortunately, this now handheld is a complete miss for me.
A dedicated handheld from Sony would be mega if they did it right, but they fail to see the writing on the wall and constantly flub them with a lack of support, or just a complete "why?" decision.
We can stream PS5 gameplay on our phones, so this seems completely redundant to be honest.

Something about this Project Q has been bugging me. Could be nothing but it was strange the way Project Q was presented. Project Q "enables you stream any game from PS5" instead of "enables you stream your PS5". I mean, Remote Play we can access menus, configs and everything else, not just the games.
Even so, this is a no for me, especially when I don't have a PS5

if this only works for ps5 remote play, they should have doubled down with partnerships with pc and release remote play for steam/steamdeck and called it a day.
They could have made a portable ps4 with support for Ps3/Vita/Psp digital titles and ps5 remote-play and we all would have eaten it up no matter the price. I'm heartbroken, but not surprised anymore.
I'll save up for a steam deck instead and work thru the switch/vita backlog

Feel bad for us James, we got so close to an awesome new PlayStation handheld system, instead we got something that no one needs.
My only thought is that when the inevitable fire sale happens, and it gets blown out for $100, and the mod community does something with it, maybe then we can have some fun with it.
I’m already barely using my backbone and Steamdeck, so, clearly Sony doesn’t want my money.
The worst part is, this will sell poorly, and Sony will use those sales numbers as proof that they shouldn’t make a new handheld.

I think what frustrates me the most is that there are already devices out there that lets you do the exact same thing, seems like it was pointless for Sony to bring out the backbone now at this point.
SONY just give us a portable device that can easily play and utilize media files like videos, pictures, music without a content manager. All the console/game part of the device can be locked away from the user. The vita failed because the user was basically locked out from doing anything with personal media that typical mobile devices let the user freely share/ modify/ move/ ect.

To be honest, the idea of Remote play with a device that has all functions of Dual Sense is not bad. If the price is reasonable, the streaming quality stable, and the screen is decent, I might give it a try.

Me as well! Hopefully as time goes on Sony might be listening to the negative feedback this has been receiving, and maybe add some additional functionality to this device. One can only hope.
@@PSVitaat2am I think and hope that’s what they do. Even add a sd card option to allow download ps1, 2 and 3 games from the ps store. That would be a better option than just allowing you to stream from your ps5.

This device could be the most awesome controller in the world! Imagine playing Gran Turismo with all of the important telemetric data in your hands! .... but instead, they created a portable device with side controllers that you can use only at home, it'll be probably expensive and it'll last just a few hours...without actually playing any games on its own. Hard pass :(

They tried second screen with ps4, and Nintendo tried that with Wii U. Great idea but gamers just seem resistant to change and innovation. So I think it would just go to waste.

Sony has reached "big head" syndrome yet again, and thinks their shit don't stink, and they can sell anything, to anyone, and at any price. My god, the hubris on display here is next level. Most people already own devices that can do what the Q can, and so much more, so why buy this? This would really need to be $150 or less to even begin to stand a chance, and with a decent quality 8" display, there is no chance of that happening. I'm sorry this is so disappointing to so many, but I'm thrilled to see this, as it is the cluster **** I always expected and then some. I have the perfect name for this device, the Sony Schadenfreude(LOL).

Theyre so lazy they couldn't even make it have a unique design, it's literally just a tablet with a ps5 controller sawed in half and glued on the sides. Even if I had a ps5 it's not worth it, especially when you can get a steam deck that can play most PlayStation exclusives

I don't plan on getting it honestly. I'd have to drop at least $1000 just to use the device in general. Buy a ps5 buy a ps5 game, then buy the project q-lite. Its not worth it in my opinion.

Yeah I don't think so either. I think the only people this will appeal to are those that already have a PS5, a good library of games and a strong internet connection. Starting from scratch for this thing alone is going to be very pricey.

I’d say even if Sony allowed it to play PS1/PSP classics that would make it a lot more interesting. Heck it would be really cool if Sony starting selling PS Vita Classics to play on it. At a minimum I would think even if it’s relatively low spec it could run PS1 and PSP games.

Exactly! Heck of this game would have at least been able to install PS5 games or any of Sony's other legacy platforms, I think would have made all the difference to consumers.
The post-PS4 Sony is an entirely different company than the pre-PS4 Sony. It's not really surprising they made a horrible business decision.

Ah yes, Project Q, the handheld no one really wanted based on the rumors beforehand. And from my experiences with Remote Play when on vacation on such platforms as the PSVita, I doubt this is meant to go beyond one's own WiFi network. And unless Sony plans on doing a whole external battery charger like our beloved handheld, that 3-4 hour battery life ain't gonna be useful for any significantly long gaming session. If Sony was learning any lessons from the Nintendo Switch, this ain't one of them. Makes me even more glad that I just went with the PS4 due to its ability to remote play with my Vita and PSTV (despite not being that useful on the road).
Heck, my only success of the Remote Play was me using it on my PC to have Discord Chat on it for Twitch.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'll wait until there's an Android Bone before I try my hand at on the road Remote Play again.
One last thing. Is it me, or were the ear buds the only exiting thing we got from that announcement?

Sony lost its drive to be innovative when they were losing the "console war" back in the day when the mass majority didn't appreciate FREE ONLINE GAMING with the ps3 and MASSIVELY INNOVATIVE games that pushed the psp to INSANE levels for a handheld gaming device. The DS and Xbox dominated so I just accept their decisions to not try (starting with them copying the apple Iphone's unreasonable pricing decisions).
They never got the deserved recognition for being the people's gaming choice, so it is what it is. The video was painful for me to watch but I'm sure it was torture for you to make. Thank you for the content ❤

If PS5 can stream to this thing directly with high bit-rate and low latency instead of using online connection like remote play I can see how this would be appealing since the latter scenario is a terrible experience right now even with decent internet connection. So basically it would be a Wii U controller which was actually great for off-screen play but with DualSense features and streaming PS5 games. Ideal if the TV is occupied by someone else and even better if the Q-lite can be used as secondary controller for local multi-player when needed.
That is a positive way of looking at things, I guess only time will tell.
If I'm being honest, I'm not sure if I'd be interested in a dedicated handheld from Sony.
I mean the reason we liked the vita in the first place was the games right? And in 2023, Sony isnt really making those same kinds of games anymore. The Killzone Mercenary studio is gone (and Guerilla moved on from the franchise), the studio behind Freedom Wars and Gravity Rush is gone, the ModNationRacers studio(s) are gone, Media Molecule is.... Well let's just say, if their next game isnt a breakout success, I think Jim Ryan is gonna be Jim Ryan.
I would love a modern handheld from the PSP/PS3/Vita era Sony, but I don't think I really want a handheld from the PS4/PS5 era of Sony. And in any case, Sony is already bringing their modern games to Steam and the Steam Deck.

I just don't understand what Sony is thinking, I mean, they dropped the vita due to low sell volumes. What do they think this is going to do? I can tell you, low sales. The only saving grace for this device would be if it was dirt cheap, but I honestly highly doubt that.
I think it's just yet another example of them playing things very safe.
My only hope is that it will end up flopping, becoming a discount item somewhere at some point, in the future, for me to modify and hack lol 😆
Then, it becomes some obscure rarity after that.
I do wish I could say that Sony will be like, "nahhh it's a full-fledged portable beast. We were just trolling for media coverage.", but that would be a fantasy world.

The remote play video comment section a month ago said it all of newcomers to PS platforms who were confused, handheld fans aren't happy so clearly Sony is aiming to compete with android cloud handhelds with a PS5 or PS+ ecosystem and their customers are either confused newcomers or fans not interested. This is going to be hilariously bad to watch. XD
Dualsense features and triggers is nice but without native hardware I mean I don't know remote play already is a niche feature as it is and many people still don't understand it other than PSP/Vita owners that are dedicated to PlayStation and really pay attention the average person doesn't know about it or likely care/understand it.
They want PS+ subscriptions and a cloud future. The remote play is nice but if it's the same or a bit improved over Vita/PSP then well who really cares it's just the same feature still but improved at the end of the day and how many Vita owners from 2011-2019 let alone from 2019-2023 phone users have used remote play for PS4/PS5 on their phone android or iPhone with or without the grips even? I assume those in the know not newcomers that's for sure. XD Not to mean the PS4 remote play app to PS5?
It's cool but who really uses them I want to know those statistics in the poll. I like remote play on Vita and Off TV Play on Wii U, I like dual screens which this QLite will be single screen cast to the device just like PSVR 99% of the time is besides the very few Playroom VR minigames that did off asymmetrical support.
The fact I can cast my phone to my TV and use phone only apps on it also being possible is a great thing I can do.... So I can cast the remote play app to my TV from my phone if I wanted Sony.... Think about that.... XD I bet I can do that with the Android handheld and cast the streaming apps of XCloud to my TV if I wanted.... XD Let alone emulators or more. Or any other dockable handheld with a HDMI or Composite output.
From PSP with a composite or component (component was better as it supported games and everything else, the other didn't support games) cable to your TV (the Nomad, Pocket PCs also before or around the same time), to PS Vita TV or a handheld for native and streaming to only streaming remote play (maybe or maybe not a 4G/5G sim card slot???? we don't know yet).
I think any screen on a controller without the native hardware is a waste. It isn't a Wii U as that's local between Gamepad and Console no wifi needed other than for other apps/services but you can take it anywhere with a battery pack you don't need a TV for most of it's game library.....
The G Cloud is android and streaming, android is a great way to use apps/games there or emulators. Same as the PC handhelds as it's own libraries, Windows or whatever OS you want to use it with. Or Switch with it's own library of games.
Or you could you know use a PS4/Phone/PC/Tablet lying around instead to play PS5 games remotely. Other than the screen size in-between a tablet and phone it is a remote play app in a device to charge people $250+ why would anyone pay that. Also Vita cost how much and people complained besides the memory cards and games?

Man, I can already do this with my PSVita & PS4 Pro. I think people have even developed an app that can work between PS5 and Vita too... or at least I heard they were? But yeah... Remote play all day on my PSVita. I had to get a super good internet plan and the best Orbi Routers to play it enjoyably with a stable connection lmfao... but after all that, it was worth it. I just don't see much magic in this... lol. This is no PSVita #2. It's just a controller for a phone haha. Am I right?
Now, supposedly (according to many conspiracy theorists - which are strangely correct about many things haha) there is going to be a "Q Phone" released in the future that will be connected with Starlink. Maybe it's related to this? Why would they call it Project Q? Quantum? I think that's what it stands for. Anyways, idk, random idea though. :P Maybe remote play will be a ton better with a super strong satellite powered internet?
It really is perplexing I got to admit. As mentioned in the video we already have so many options that something like this just seems pointless.
When I saw the reveal, I was sadden but also not surprised since they gave up on the Vita way too fast.
I hope Sony had learned their lesson and possibly improve but now its quite skeptical.
Hopefully we'll learn more info about this and it will help bring some of our questions that we have with some answers.

I still love my Vita, it still remains my favorite handheld portable gaming device (excluding my phone lol). So selfishly I was still hoping we'd get a similar design to it, just with updated specs and performance. That would've been fantastic. Sony need to come out to challenge switch and steam deck.. but they are hiding and just produce a accessory called project q ... wth .... they should be out with another Portable like vita with 6 inch screen .. many people would get that .. with 512gb to 1tb of memory ... it would increase the sale... i would buy it for travel , to work etc .. why with wifi and remote play .... All Sony had to do was make a $400 PS5 handheld, downscale the power and make it on par with the Xbox Series S, and we'd have a winner.

As someone that would just buy it to have a better vita I don't really care what they do with it. I just hope it's as easy as the vita when it comes to jailbreaking it so I can play whatever I want. I prob won't buy one for a few years until they work out all the mods for it tho. It's a start tho they make this it sales alright but people bitch for a vita 2.0 they might make a true handheld.
I wouldn't worry about that, chances are this thing will be in The bargain bin for $20 just a few months after it's released. We'll all be able to get one! 🤣
I'm completely disappoint with Sony. They know that we would've liked a new psp or ps vita, but instead they make the project q. Like no one wanted, no one asked for this, like what's the actual purpose of this device. It's just a waste of money since it can only use remote play and it can only last 3 to 4 hours. I was low-key expecting a new ps vita at the showcase, but as soon as I saw this monstrosity, I was left completely disappointed. I simply wanted a pocket sized handheld that can play games natively in 1080p and 60fps, has backwards compatibility, has a strong bluetooth connection, and could last 5 to 6 hours max. But it looks like that'll be nothing more than a dream.

Claiming that a new "portable device" is coming is a blatant lie. This is just a PS5 controller with a screen, nothing more. I suggest referring to it as "Sony Project NQ" henceforth. And to celebrate the announcement I immediately got an additional Vita Slim, because why not. So I'm set for the next couple of years, thank you! 😊

They should have just copied the Switch like everyone else. I hate to say that. I loved the PSP, and the Vita grew on me over time, but this? I mean... Sony could literally just release an app ON the Switch, and the NVidia Shield, and the Steam Deck, that did the exact same thing. In fact, I think we're likely to see fan-made apps that do the same thing on all three (the first will require rooting the device of course, since Nintendo is, you know, a traditional console company that hates our freedom fries).
It really is a odd decision that's for sure. Almost feels like a last minute cash grab by Sony to triangle after current user base with a PS5. Probably the safest method for them at this point, sad as it is.
also why would anyone buy this if you have to have a ps5 when they are already talking about ps6 coming out hahahah oh man I really hope you can jailbreak this thing and it runs the stuff vita can't.

After treatment of Sony and Nintendo with the vita/ps3 and Wii U/switch I could care less about anything else they release. I’m fully converted pc gamer with an iPhone and vita for portable play. No need for anything else at this point. Certainly not a streaming only bs console like project Q. How did no one learn from google stadia or whatever forgetful names you give an imaginary streaming device

Well just got a PS5 so thats out of the way.. Now we gotta wait and see what this thing can do.. I'm hoping maybe if not this model the next one you'll be able to store games or pop discs in the back of the device.. I understand the way they're thinking without full PS4/PS5 software support they wouldn't be able to compete in todays market..
I guess as they say, only time will tell. I really do hope that this device gets them added features in the future.
All they did is take everything great about a vita, toss it in the trash, keep remote play but only for ps5 and there really thinking of selling this dumpster fire of a handheld to people? Lmao! It's going to flop hard! Makes me sad but I still have my 1001 OLED to keep me happy and I remote play from my ps4 and ps5 with it with little problems.
It's crazy to think that our little PS Vita which is over a decade old, can do even more than this upcoming new device. It really has stood the test of time!
