I've tried a few of these and my favorite hands down is the Great Value. I like that it is packed with broth rather than the gravy. I am able to make more versatile meals for my taste pallet. From shredding and frying to a crisp, I add my own seasonings to the broth for tacos, fajitas, stir fry or omelets just to name a few. I don't like the taste of the gravies that are used in the others. I have actually rinsed the meat off to make a dish I enjoy. Even rinsed doesn't quite clear the gravy taste though. I would rather have 5.5 ounces of clean beef to make as I enjoy than to eat something that I wished tasted much better.
Thanks for the comparison of the products. A good test I haven't seen anyone else do.
I appreciate your videos and your presentation style.
Hi Lori D
Interesting and good points you make.
Thank you Lori D for watching and your kind words.
Several good points and ideas ,,, will be trying a few ... Thanks ...
"taste pallet"? Well, la-de-da aren't you fancy. Lol jk. Yeah, I just made a meal with the great value brand and it was pretty good.
Great Value is also gluten free, which I must have.
When taste was considered, seems Hereford was the best value. If taste doesn't matter...ok
Q
I went to "the Outlet" Costco store
I picked up discounted Kirkland Signature brand canned beef 12 oz can for $3.39/can
Bought 2 cans and decided to taste test one.
I used my BEAR brand mini rice cooker
I cut ✂️ up 3 russet potatoes 🥔.
Added fresh 7 slices of carrots 🥕
1 can of beef
1 tsp of chicken bullion and 1 stalk of celery finely chopped
45 min to 1 hour....unlike on rice it kept going
I filled the water line to 2.
It was one very delicious stew.
Alone...it was about 4 meals for me, this way.
Definitely will do it again!

Kroger and Clover Valley are both from the same company, "Crider Foods". The only difference is the labeling. I didn't know that until they were both recalled last year for having lead contamination in them from the factory in Brazil.
Hello mylesc99,
I did not know that. Thank you for the info and for watching our video.
Clover Valley and Hereford can roast beef and gravy are currently the best IMO. Both brands contain mostly meat with just barely the required gravy to fill the can.
This video brings up a good point. The time to find out what tastes good to you is before SHTF. I have done this with Mountain House freeze dried meals.
Well said!
Keystone roast beef, is almost just like cooking a roast in the pressure cooker, it's real good and has a 5 yr Exp date
Hereford is my favorite brand. Mix it with some El Pato and you can make some amazing shredded beef burritos!
I tried the Clover Valley tonight with two slices of Texas toast garlic bread and it made a great open faced roast beef sandwich. It was very good and I liked the gravy.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this!
Hello Nevalee Stone,

You did a great job on this video,. Very thorough and informative
Hello DanaG
Thank you for your kind words. I am glad you liked it and hope it was helpful.
Thank you for watching.
Keystone Beef is pretty good, but I would eat whatever I could in a emergency situation.
Thanks for the video. Clean production btw. I don't buy these but a can or two in the pantry for some quick and easy protein would be awesome. Looking forward to checking out all your vids now.
Thanks for this. These are very important comparisons. Good Job.

A great presentation, fun with food. This is one instance my parents may have been wrong to not play with your food.
Great video, love the test!
Hi Carla
I am glad you liked the video, hope it was helpful.
Thank you for watching.
So glad I found your video. I have been wanting info on canned beef. Walmarts gravy looks to watery for me. I think I will try Herefords.
Thanks for the video
Hello Debfarrell,
You are welcome! I have an updated version of this video with more brands you might like.

HELLO CHEF PREPPER
NEW SUBSCRIBER TODAY...
I REALLY LIKE HOW YOU PREVIEWED THE BEEF PRODUCTS...
I JUST CAME ACROSS THE CHESTNUT HILL ROAST BEEF w/GRAVY A FEW DAYS AGO, I LIKED IT RIGHT AWAY, OF COURSE I ADDED MY OWN TOUCH TO IT, BUT I LIKE IT!!! AND BASED UPON YOUR FINDINGS I WILL STICK TO THIS BRAND...
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE EFFORTS THAT YOU PUT INTO THIS VIDEO!!!
I WILL VIEW YOUR OTHER VIDEOS AS WELL!!!

This is a great video thank you!!
Thank you for all the work you did for this video.I would definitely chose chestnut hill or hereford. Taste would rule for me.
You are so welcome!
very informative!
I just tried the great value walmart brand. It was surprisingly good. I agree though that the gravy was a bit runny. I added a tablespoon of brown gravy powder to it and it was still a bit runny after I finished cooking it. Gravy was still tasty though.
Btw, I served it with some mashed potatoes that I made from powder flakes and powdered milk. I don't have powdered butter so used normal.
That was a GOOD meal. It was super fast to make also. Reminded me of when my mom would make roast beef when I was a kid. Filled me up big time also. Next time I might add some canned green beans also. I will also have to try out some of these other brands to compare.
@@jdrhea6712 Lol... yeah, it was questionable when I first opened the can. However, after heating it up it was pretty good. Not tried the other brands yet though so maybe it is nasty compared to those. I could easily eat this brand though a couple times a week and not get tired of it.
The only canned meat I will buy is Keystone, it's just meat and salt. Every Walmart and Kroger in my area has it.
Great comparison for 12 oz can. Great size for single person. Thank you!!!
Good video! Thank You!
Thanks for the video.
Hello Mr.Short.
You are welcome sir and thank you for watching and commenting.
If you have not tried the canned beef from Costco you absolutely have to try it. So very good.
Hi layneb275,
No I haven't tried it yet. Don't think they had it at the Costco when I was there.
I will be looking for it though.
Thank you for watching.
I look every time I go to Costco but they never have it
Great video!
Hello Nevada Miner,
Thank you!
@@ChefPrepper most welcome.
Thanks for sharing this detailed review of canned beef on the market. I vaguely remember that Underwood had a roast beef mixture like their chicken spread - or was it just a liverwurst spread that company made? I've got canned chicken, turkey, ham, and seafood; I had not considered beef a cannable food though. Hmmm ....
Hello Dana Cooper,
You are welcome and thank you for watching.
I used to get this at Aldi, but they haven't had it for years. Awhile back I got some at Dollar General and it wasn't too bad. A couple of years ago Dollar Tree had small tuna can sized ones, and they were ok, but the beef chunks were small.
Dollar Tree is adding $3 and $5 dollar products to their stores now. So maybe one day the cans will get bigger as long as inflation doesn't keep chipping away at the chipped beef.
I did notice the Great Value brand did not say gravy on the label. A person on a Keto diet would not want gravy. My favorite beef product is Keystone. Cook it until all the juices are reabsobed back into the beef, and it tates like home cooked roast beef. If I want gravy I'll make my own with mushrooms.
Keystone is the best I've had, I actually store it for emergencies, 5 yr shelf life
Great video. Lots of useful info and well done. Everyone has different likes and dislikes, and everyone tastes things differently. Your favorite may be my least favorite. But I wanted some info, and someone's opinion on the matter. That's what I got from this video. Also I liked seeing the different products on a plate. That way if I want more juice than gravy, or more gravy than juice. You could use different brands for different meals. Like I said, great video. Thanks for the time you put into it. Subscribed.
Hello James G,
I am glad you liked the video! And thank you for watching and subscribing.
good job. it would be nice to see a fork separation of the product, to see if it is real beef or reprocessed. also to see if the oz/cost comparison.
I came to watch this for prepping tips but found my new protein packed snack
Thank you!
Great video.
Thank you! Glad you liked it!
I just ate the Chestnut hill roast beef with chestnut hill mashed potatoes lol,
I found the roast beef to be bland i haven't tried the other brands,
i ate about half of the beef will try it again tomorrow to see if it was my tastebuds.
Great channel subbed. Looking forward to more head to head smackdowns on canned goods.
Hello Daniel Ji,
Sorry you didn't like the Chestnut Hill to well. But, better to find out now than after you have a lot on hand.
One of my taste testers found it pretty bland also. Might need a few spices, or herbs with it?
Thank you so much for watching and subscribing.

Hi I would like to get more of the roast beefs by family dollar
Protein is GREAT for my weightlifting
And weightlifting is good for your preparedness journey.@@jbjoseph4326
That's good to know. I have some of the Walmart brand and was not impressed with the taste or consistency. I'll look for the Herford and Chestnut Hill brands.
Thanks!
Welcome!
Great video. I do think product of Brazil might be good but I don’t think I have ever had a product from there. Do they use teal beef? Would like to know if any of those Are a product of the USA? Thank you.
Hi Sharon Hawkins,
I think the beef from Brazil is typical beef and maybe a little more "pasture" raised than some beef.
Great Value (Wal-Mart) is sourced from North America, but I am not sure what percentage is from the US.
Sorry, but I am not sure which brands are sourced from the US.
Thank you for watching.
What are your thoughts on Chestnut Hill? I just bought some to try and would like a little feed back or tips on enjoying before I whip out the can opener
Hello Tex Gaming!
Our family likes it pretty well. It was/is very similar to Hereford brand. Thick gravy.
Hope you like it! And thank you for watching.
For me the favorites are Hereford and Clover Valley, they are what I stock. Have bought Great Value but buying too much broth vs meat. No Kroger in my area.
Not here in Florida either, but I saw a Kroger truck pull up and deliver to my neighbor across the hall.
My favorite is Keystone.
I picked chestnut Hill to.
Thanks for the video information. My spouse & I were talking about canned bacon, is there such a thing?
Hello itasa100,
A company called Yoders makes/has canned bacon.
It isn't readily available that I am aware of, but is available on Amazon, but is very expensive.
Also, most Amish type stores carry Yoder brand of meats and are cheaper than what I saw on Amazon.
@@ChefPrepper are used to work at a disaster preparedness store around 10 years ago. The store sold it. We opened a can and let customers try it one during one of our open house things. Was OK.
Thanks
Nice review, the one thing that concerns me is the beef is from Brazil, US fast food chains and supermarkets import beef from Brazil because they do not have the same restrictions as the beef in the USA, they use very toxic chemicals down there that are banned here in the US, the cattle eat the feed and then it's in their meat then we eat it. So you have to be careful.
Hello Pat,
Good information. I am kinda concerned with meat from the conventionally raised meat here also. Both sources are a little concerning to me. I am leaning more towards wild caught fish overall.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Costco sells beef from Brazil in Mylar bags. I do not know why preppers never talk about it. I use it all the time. I have used it 7 months past expiration date and it was fine.
I tried Progresso n there was just a weee little. Soup n most all juice. I like Campbells brand
Awesome! I’m so glad to see you eat clean meats. We do too! Praise The Lord for telling us how to stay healthy!
thanks
Hello Bama Preper.
You are welcome and thank you for watching.
Canned meat bought from the stores has its drawbacks. Many have to limit their salt & sodium intake which these are loaded with . I have some on my shelves while at the same time I have Mason jars filled with various meats that I can without salt. I can add Mrs Dash & other no salt spices when I use it. I recently added no salt added store canned tuna to our pantry. Where there’s a need there’s a way …Linda
Hello Larrybair,
Good idea! Thank you for watching and the good advice!
They would all be great over rice or pasta!
Hi Denise,
Yes! I agree!
Those would a good prep but never seen canned roast beef in British Columbia for some reason.
In its defense, the Walmart brand says it's canned with broth, not gravy.
Our family has always preferred Hereford. The Walmart brand was a decided "yuk." I have never seen the others.
Hi Nancydelu,
A perfectly good choice! Most of the others can be found at the Dollar Type stores.
I appreciate you doing this. What a difference between the label and actual contents. I'll seek out some of the other brands that you showed. I can see how in reality one can of any of these realistically will only be enough for 2 adults.
I've been focusing on protein content lately since someone posted a study showing men that were skin and bones after eating a low protein high carb 1500 calorie diet; they were starving. Grains and veggies will only hold you over for a short time apparently, don't let the veggie pushers fool you. I've also discovered that chicken breast is the most protein dense part of the bird, with the thigh being a close couple of grams less.
We've known this forever, but there's too much money to be made in crap food (whether it's chips, bread, or fast food/restaurants). The body is meant to run on protein and fat, not carbs. That's hundreds of thousands of years of anthropology before agriculture. That's why the plebes got the bread and the elites ate meat. There's a reason more and more people are swearing by the carnivore diet and how much better they feel. However, too much protein is actually bad and can cause kidney failure (so preppers relying on raising rabbits to survive are in trouble). Translating to chicken, the thighs are the healthiest part of the chicken because you need the fat (and obviously the skin) for energy.
My choice would be the Great Value, I would like broth rather than a heavy gravy. If I want a gravy I will open up a can to put on it. Still not understanding the different protein profiles. It doesn't add up. But I agree with other comment that I would rather have in a broth to make other meals out of it. But can understand if people really just want to open and pour over potatoes and that be the end of it. I am not against doing that too in a pinch.
Hi DJ Ridge,
Seems that several folks prefer the broth over the gravy.
The Protein amounts came from the cans, and yeah they don't seem to be in agreement generally.
Thank you DJ Ridge for watching.
If Keystone brand is available in your stores, trust me, it will put all of these to shame.
Hello Deborah Brown,
It is available and we have tried it. It is very good, my family likes it.
I didn't include it in the video because I wasn't sure it was readily available to everyone. I hope to do a video reviewing Keystone Meats and comparing them to other brands soon.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
Hell, I buy canned roast beef for lazy meals too. I was skeptical the first time I tried it years ago but I can doctor up some pretty passable stuff with it when I'm feeling lazy or don't feel like going to the store for fresh meat. We must live in the same relative area, I have all the same brands too, like all of them. Also, store brands are generally just contracted out to the same brands they have in their store, it's weird but it's true. Kroger doesn't own food processing facilities, or if they do it's very few. For example, Kirkland batteries from Sam's Club are just Duracell in a different wrapper.
I’m
Confused Bc the taste tester chose Chestnut Hill #5 as last in taste. So Ypur family chooses price per Oz over taste? 💕 you broke this all down. I may seek a couple other brands. I agree w/previous poster. The GV is good for heavy seasoned meals.
Wish you had tested Libby's and Hormel roast beef. Hormel used to be the only brand I would buy.
I can't find them . I looked for them both in several stores and towns for the updated version of this video.
Hereford is #1 best taste can full packed, shake the other cans lot of water sound.
At 1 point, Libby's had some good roast beef hash. I can't find it lately.
I haven't been able to find any either and have looked in multiple stores and cities.
I was shocked at the pathetic amount of meat in the Great Value beef. I stick with Hereford. It has a decent amount of meat and the gravy is good quality. We can't get the other brands you mentioned here...
While true, the price difference from what I've seen is so far off, GV is cheaper even buying multiple cans.
@@Swearengen1980 It's stringy and tasteless though, because it uses broth instead of gravy.
@@cassandralibertywest4310 Fair. I have a variety of canned meats for emergencies, hurricane/storm power outages, etc., but I've never eaten the stuff. I don't see myself eating canned meat unless I have no other choice.
@@Swearengen1980 Most of it is okay. I don't care for the Bristol canned Ham at all though.
I know this video is a year or so.old but I just came across it. Of the various brands I have tried (haven't had Chestnut Hill or Kroger brand) my favorite was Clover Valley. I caught it on sale a few times and stocked up. Dollar General in my area doesn't have it any more, though. They stock Hereford, now. It is pretty good but I like the flavor of Clover Valley better. The Great Value version is not good at all, IMO and the can seems to be full of water (aka very runny 'gravy') more than meat.
The good thing about Hereford is that they also have various beef products - including beef in gravy - in pouches which I find to be easier to store and in some ways more durable than cans. They have meatballs in a 'spaghetti' sauce (not a great sauce but can be 'doctored' with jarred herbs/spices), shredded, seasoned beef, taco seasoned beef (again, ut is okay but benefits from adding cumin) and the beef in gravy (the best of the bunch, IMO). Hereford products seem to all be from Brazil and they call their pouch products 'Rip N Ready'. I caught the shredded, seasoned beef on sale at a local discount grocery and bought a good bit of it.
Hello JAB671,
Thank you for watching and the good info!
I have not tried them but I will great video. maybe you have but costco has a one lb can of chicken. Very high quality. Check it out if you have not.
Thank you, I will try to find it and check it out.
we like the Chestnut hill beef
Lot of beef for the price, at least as compared to the other brands.
my only gripe with canned beef is that all of these brands can in gravy, making it a challenge to adapt to certain recipes. So far, Costco is the only one that is canned in broth in lieu of gravy, and neutrally flavored, so it can be easy adapted to most any recipe
Have you tried Keystones canned beef? If so, what are your thoughts?
Hello Mikey Mike,
We do have some Keystone canned beef. My family likes it. I personally can't eat beef or red meat anymore due to a tick bite, but I did like it before that happened.
I still get beef products for my family and talk about them because I know many people like them.
Thank you for watching.
@@ChefPrepper Damn, I'm sorry to hear that Chef. I guess chicken is your best friend now?
@@ChefPrepper That's something I've never heard before. Sorry that happened.

I'm going with the Chestnut Hill ...

Runniness means less ingredients/thickeners, so not a negative.
Which has the best taste???
Great value or Hereford
Where do you get Chestnut Hill roast beef??
Hello WALT,
The Chestnut Hill is available at The Family Dollar Store.
Hope this helps and as always
Thank you for watching!
Maybe you could tell us what each type tastes like instead of just saying one is the best.
I don't really care about the cost, weight and value, I want to know wbat the products are like.
How long do you think tuna fish will last in the can?
Hello James44mag,
According to the USDA canned food will last nearly indefinitely if stored properly.

I would choose chestnut hill
I love Keystone beef , just Keystone meats in general.
Chestnut Hill.
Have found that Hereford is less salty
Try keystone beef all so in pork turkey and chicken and ground beef made in USA😅
I would definitely just make sum gravy lol
I don't like the Great Value , i love the Clover Valley nice Meat chunks and good Gravy
Hello Dan Ray,
Thank you for watching and commenting. I think a lot of people agree with you.
You needed to rince the gravyy off of most of the samples!🤔
Hello Bruce Larson,
I thought about doing that, but then thought I would have to then dry the meat and some of them might have absorbed some water (not sure)? So, I decided to just drain the gravy/broth as best as I could.
Hope the video was still helpful and thank you for watching.
I like Keystone Beef
Are all canned beef type things really high in fat?
Hello Beatmaster Flesh
Good question. I will post the percentage fat in the calories for each of the brands in the video on the Community Tab.
I think other people might like to know the answer to your question.
Thank you for your question.
Dinty more beef stew is my fav and excellent expiration dates!
Hello Denise Girmer,
Dinty More is a good brand. I will check the expiration dates on some of ours and keep this info in mind when shopping again.
Thank you for the info and for watching!
I like DInty Moe too.
Dinty Moore used to be the only "stew" I ate for decades. Love the gravy. But the meat has changed over the years, sometimes it looks like mystery meat. Still love the gravy. I had bought some dollar store brand and it looked and smelled like dog food, couldn't finish it.
There is an old saying in the advertising world: "It does not matter what you say or show about dog food. If the dogs won't eat it, it won't sell." Your family taste test had the only validity to me. I.E., they can give Spam away, but they cannot make me eat it, after I tasted it that one time.
👉 Skip to @ 6:50 to go directly to his assessment mentioned in the video title. 👈
So your family rated Chestnut Hill as the worst tasting, but you rated it #1 overall? That’s also not 8oz of beef, as it’s still covered in thick, heavy gravy.
were can i fine them.
Hi Linda Achenbach,
The Chestnut Hill is available at The Family Dollar, the Clover Valley at The Dollar General, Great Value at Wal-Mart, and I have seen the Herford at various stores, but got mine at Kroger.
Hope this helps and thank you for watching.
👍👍😊
I've never seen canned roast beef in Ontario, Canada.
Hi Adriana Lima
I don't know much about your stores in Canada, but you can probably order online if you want to get some.
Thank you for watching and commenting.
I love Vienna sausages but Libby doesnt give u much the sausages r small n not the best n juice. Armor i think is best n v sausages r one of best things n hot weather salt water n protein.
The best brand is lakeside beef, hands down.
With all canned meat you really need to know how much true meat is in the can versus meat and solution/"gravy". The other thing to consider is what other stuff is added to thicken up the "gravy"/solution. Ask yourself, what meals will you make with this?
hereford has the best corned beef, so i would trust their roast beef.
Hello soc oca,
I have seen the Hereford Corned Beef, but haven't got any yet. I will have to put that on my shopping list.
Thank you for the info and for watching.
@@ChefPrepper hey, let me know hoe you like it, have it in chili, or potatos and onions, even a taco.
Obvious best value is Great Value! Almost twice the protein, even though several of the others had more weight. Which probably means cheaper cuts of meat and fat.
