      Made me hungry too !! Growing up, my mother would serve chili over boiled potatoes (or baked). As an adult, I’ve always served chili in bowls. I’m going back to my mothers way. I always loved it and don’t know why I didn’t continue serving it that way. Thank you for your channel. 😊

    My favorite canned meat is canned Alaska salmon at Aldi for $2.49. I snagged most our stock at $1.99. We use every bit of it, making salmon salad, salmon loaf, salmon patties, salmon meatballs, and salmon soup with the broth and a bit of salmon. We use fillers, like leftover rice, barley, or oatmeal, and add onion and celery. The most versatile bargain meat I've found for prepping.

    How can anyone call themselves a prepper without canning their own foods ? I learned when I was a child seventy years ago ! Canning meat is one of the easiest things to can 1 We did chicken ,deer, beef rabbits ,squirrels ,pigs and the cost for a pressure cooker is the best investment you can make ! All my children and grand children were taught how to can, smoke meat water bath vegetables ! That was just life ! We also grew all our vegetables and only needed to go to town to buy coffee and a few staples ! I've canned thousands of jars in my lifetime all with the pressure cooker !

    Great video. We live in FL and so we are prone to hurricanes. We have for years, every time we go grocery shopping, pick up extra shelf stable food and put in a storage container, That way when the news comes out about another storm. We don’t have to deal with the zombies that will clean a store out in half a day. If the power goes out, we have food. If we have to leave in a hurry. It’s grab and go. It’s never to late to start preparing ahead of time.

    Although I don’t like them, I stocked canned smoked kippers for emergencies. My husband is thrilled! Me, not so much but when you need protein, good alternative and food idea to have variety. We all need to remember, when and if the preps run out, having something to fish with if that’s the only meat protein available. One just has to work for it. And if firearm preps aren’t available, a bow and arrow rig is the next best thing for bagging deer, foul etc.

    I love canned corn beef, I have made it a regular thing & eat abt one a week. One reg can splits up into two or three meals depending on how much eggs or other items you use in same meal.
    The nice thing abt switching to eating your preps is you get a true to life idea how much you eat in a week or month of a certain thing. Also you won't make the mistake of stocking high stuff you won't eat LOL.

    • @ChefPrepper
      @ChefPrepper  2 роки тому +3

      Hi TheLibran1. It is good for folks to make sure they will eat the foods they are storing as it can be easy to stock up on things that won't be eaten or won't be very well liked when they are eaten.

    • @TheLibran1
      @TheLibran1 2 роки тому +3

      @@ChefPrepper "or won't be very well liked when they are eaten."
      Eating something no matter how much you like it when there isn't variety will drop its desireability by lets say "2 or 3 points".
      If you like something and rate it "6->7" points. Lets say after 2 months its now 3 to 4 points. Inotherwords below a 5 and you'll grow to almost resent eating it 3 or 4 months in even if you are grateful to be alive.
      Sometimes its worth spending a bit more for that "one or two points" difference too as it can matter. Like I was getting the regular white rice, and grew really tired of it after eating it every other day for months.
      But I switched to Thai or Basmati, and now its no problem. Spices & Sauces also matter a lot because they give variety to everything.

I'll have to look for that in our local stores. Since you made this video a year ago. I'm going to see if you did do a video on what $10 buys in each meat.
    I also wondered if you have come across canned cod fish. When I was a kid my mom used to open the top and bottom of the can of cod. There was no liquid - it was solid. You could slice, dip it in eggs and bread crumbs and fry it. It made super eady fish cakes. Easy meal served with bake beans.

    What are the things I found when I put some fresh roasted variety of nuts, which is a good source of protein was walnuts, it’s my understanding that if you boil the walnuts, dry them in the oven first before putting them in a mylar bag, the tannins that are in the nut oil will make the nut less bitter and it taste better other than that all the other nuts, I roasted in the oven to roast off the oils and put them in mylar bags. Hello Just Another Acc,
      Most of the canned meats have a Best Buy Date that is 2-4 years after the purchase of a new can. They will last much longer than that. Several years, but how many depends on storage conditions. With cool, dry, storage I expect mine to last 5-10 years and maybe then some.
      Of course that is only my opinion. I believe we can tell if anything has gone wrong with the meat by lookig at the can and the meat.
      Hope that helps somewhat.

    Looks like he raided my pantry. I have most of what he showed although I also have regular spam and of course canned hams. I prefer wolf brand chili because it's gluten free and my system can't handle gluten. I have lots of kippers which I suppose are simply larger herring filets or something similar. Besides corned beef hash you can also get roast beef hash for a bit of variety. I stay away from bagged meats as they have a much shorter shelf life. You can get a variety of meat spreads, chicken, turkey, ham, roast beef. My favorite quick meal in hard times. A slice of bread, a very thick slice of cheese, and a ladle of hot canned stew over the top. A large can of stew used that way will feed four hungry people. Most of these foods can be eaten cold but if you can get an old coleman stove you can eat hot meals while the powers out. I'm not knocking the propane stoves but a coleman stove and a gallon of fuel will last for weeks in most cases. During covid my freezer was stocked and we ate fozen meats and garden vegetables for six months and still had some left. In the meantime our canned meats were there for variety. When you're out of bacon or sausage it's nice to open a can of hash. I've seen so many storage rooms of food. For me I purchased several of those metal roll around shelving units. One unit will hold nearly a thousand cans of vegetables and meats. You can refil from the back and use from the front to rotate the cans. Just as canned meats are important so is things like mustard, mayonnaise, cooking oil, flours, dehydrated potatoes, honey, vinegar, beef and chicken stock and a ton of other things you use weekly. It's great to know you have food that will keep you alive but at the same time you want some comfort food to break the monotony. Perhaps some packaged baking mixes like brownies, cake mixes, and so on.

      @@ChefPrepper I've never considered myself a prepper because I do what I do to protect my wife and I. We have a small farm, mostly woods. We have a well, a 22kw propane fueled generator and a five hundred gallon propane tank just for the generator. I have a small garden, multiple ponds with fish that we can eat in an emergency. A small fruit orchard even though I really don't eat fruit. I do enjoy making jam from the elderberries or grapes I raise and I harvest blueberries for my wife. I think I picked 60+ lbs of blueberries this year. Last winter I dug 300+ feet of trench 10 foot deep and put a thousand feet of poly tubing in it and ran it into the basement of my home. There it runs through a circulating pump and a radiator that keeps the basement at 77 while the heat outside in around a hundred degrees. I have two small greenhouses where I can grow summer vegetables during the winter for a bit of variety from all the winter greens I grow every year. I've used firewood for much of my heat for the last forty years but now that I'm in my 70's I've scaled projects back and a small electric fireplace/heater is in the wood fireplace. But it's still there if needed and I have a near endless supply of wood around the farm. I hand drilled a couple of shallow wells to pump water into the large pond next to my home and I can manually pump water out of them if needed for flushing or for boiling and drinking. As far as food goes I try to maintain nearly a years supply for two people at all times. It's made a bit easier as I do the grocery shopping and the cooking. My wife does the cleanup.

      I try to avoid it if at all possible with my storage foods.

    Salmon, sardines, herring, tuna, and mackerel are ok but shell fish is not? How about flounder and Halibut? And Chicken is considered "clean" but a pig is not? Have you ever seen what a chicken will eat? There's a real "bottom feeder" for you, chickens. They'll eat anything, they're the true bottom feeders, they'll eat other animals poop, it's why they're called "fowl", at least a pig will pass on poop!
    Isn't making such distinctions between one species and another that are basically all "bottom feeders", because of some words in a book, a bit hypocritical?

      Hello Mr. Thomas. Thank you for watching. As far as distinctions between clean and unclean animals, I just go by what the book says. Hypocritical? No offense Sir, but you would have to take that up with our Creator.
      But thank you for watching. Other than the chickens and pigs I hope you found the video helpful.

      @@squirrelcovers6340 The only reason why you are able to enjoy this kind of content is because of people who believe in the Creator and that Book because it told its readers that this time we are in was coming. Most of you believe-in-nothing people are standing around thinking that everything is going to go back to normal and will be the main ones breaking into your homes because they believe in nothing but the here and now. Why disrespect another person because you are miserable? Go believe in nothing with other people who don't believe in anything either and stop being nasty and hateful.

      Wow…. Talk about negativity. This video was about the value and even necessity of having canned, freeze dried, or packaged meats in our pantry for short and long term storage. If you don’t like the channel, move on. No need to ridicule.

    IMHO, I would advise against Kroger brand products - they have so many nasty additives in their foods. really low quality stuff.

    I look for biblically clean foods myself. Two days ago I bought canned meats too. I read the labels and unless I made a mistake, my Vienna sausages are made from chicken only.

      "Biblically clean" is old testament. The Lord told Peter if He made it, it was "clean". HTH.

      @@girlnextdoorgrooming This is debatable. God was telling Peter about the association with unclean people. So I will not judge a person over their choice to eat clean or unclean.

    In an emergency, get a pellet gun for all birds (small and song birds) and most critters (cats, dogs, rats) for adding flavor and protein. Most animals can be eaten, it's the plants that can kill. Hunger will change your eating habits, guaranteed.
