Bulgarian here, so I am writing from a perspective of foreigner. We never had canned pumpkin, never had pre-made canned pasta and never had SPAM. I never tasted artichoke in my life. We could have cans of it, but we might not have as well. I never looked for those. Otherwise, I love canned beans, canned meat and everything canned tomato.
On a side note, some parts of American English are rally pissing me off. For instance, you call Natrium - Sodium. On top of that you call salt Sodium as well. So, Sodium is both Na and NaCl. That doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Same with Kalium. For some reason you call it Potassium. Can't you guys just use the names of the elements as they are in the periodic table?
P.S. Any human being would die if there weren't enough salt in its body. Salt is fundamentally important for the processes in our body. We lose salt very easily with the sweat and we have to get it back somehow. The notion that salt is pure evil is stupid. Just try living without consuming any salt whatsoever and you will see how quickly your health would deteriorate.

@@ivanpetrov5185 no we can't use the names in the periodic table because they're racist patriarchal and misogynist.
On a more serious note Ivan, you're expecting a lot from my countrymen when they think there's more than two genders and get offended if you don't use their Ever Changing stupid pronouns. Just because you and I are based and live in reality doesn't mean very many other people do.
      Regards, - an American

I used to buy the canned tomatoes till they started talking about the BPA plastic in the cans leaching into them these days , so I buy those spagetti sauces in jars , nowhere near as good as my own I used to make . I grew up with baked beans and still buy them (and eat them out of the can often) but also buy pinto and romano beans with no sugar . @@zochbuppet448 Really wish old folks would stop blaming kids today for the supposed "addiction to sugar" as though they never craved anything sweet themselves. Fact is, people have been addicted to sugar since the dawn of mankind, it's genetically ingrained into us to want sugar. It's only because sugar has become so commonplace and cheap that people eat too much of it, and that's largely down to the older generations allowing this culture to happen in the first place.

I love sardines, tuna, pumpkin...but in the winter months or when terribly stressed, I love, love, LOVE Campbell's Tomato soup (made with water) and a grilled cheese sandwich...my go to comfort foods. These beans are perfectly fine for most of us to eat and are a good long term storage food. Dried beans also are a good option.

Spam stands for SPiced hAM, not Sizzle Pork And Mmm! It was named by the brother of a Hormel company executive who won $100 in a naming contest in 1937 when it was first produced. That was a significant amount at the time since the average wage was $148 a month, rent was $26 a month, gas was 10 cents a gallon, a loaf of bread was 9 cents, hamburger was 12 cents a lb, a new car was $760 and a brand new house was $4,100!

Sardines being fishy: yep, they are. If you open a can, use the whole thing right away. Fishy-fish are just a part of life, if you grew up eating fishy-fish, you just accept it as one of the basic flavors found in food. But it’s true that if the house or family or situation you grew up in avoided fishy-fish because the cooking process or leftovers made the apartment smelly, you might never acclimate to and and say “yum ! Delicious !” But if you can acclimate to it, it’s healthy and it’s nice to have variety with chicken, beef, fish, sometimes a zero-meat meal. I used to work in the fishing industry in Alaska. I WILL tell y’all to stay away from anything “minced fish,” such as fish sticks.

My father more than my mom, bought canned goods by the case. That included vegetables. I see nothing wrong with can veggies. They won't spoil like fresh or frozen. Can veggies get a bad rap. If you don't like the liquid just pour it out, rinse your vegetables and fix them the way you like them. So yes I buy can, fresh and frozen. Plus there is ways to take out all the salt in can spam. After all spam is pork. We always had sardines and soda crackers on hand. Add a dash of hot sauce and that's good eating. Everything in moderation. They have been telling us for years about mercury in fish. To limit your intake to no more than 3 times a week. We all need to buy staples, can foods. Flour, meal. Raw sugar, honey. Can or powdered milk. Things you can make a meal out of, yes beans, canned and fresh, rice. Have several food grade containers. A water purifier. Just think what you might need if the lights go out.a hand can opener. Everybody need cast iron skillet, a pot that you can use outside in case you can't use your stove. Just be prepared. Things are getting bad. It comes down to having something to eat and going hungry. If you only get to eat one meal a day, then I don't think you will be counting calories. I'm greatful my great and grandparents lived long enough to teach me how to survive. They just had fireplaces and a wood burning stove. They later up graded but never gave up their fireplaces or woodburning stove. My last living grandmother is in her 90s. She use her fireplace. In the winter to heart her house. Said if need be she can cook in it too. She never depended on modern appliances. Yes she has a fridge. A iron fan older than me. Those are the ones you take advice from. @Chief Sitting Feather (We'z fake Indigenous!!) I guess you've never had it in eggy rice, where the spam slices are cubed up and pan fried (they don't need extra oil) as the rice is heated to scalding. Put some rice in your bowl, add your raw eggs and your spam. The heat of the rice will cook the eggs, stirring making a custard-like texture. Splash with soy and enjoy.
That all said, I know that not everyone can do soft textures like custard, so perhaps a rice porridge (where the rice is both rinsed and soaked longer and slow cooked longer) with fried spam pieces. For ramen, I'll often fry up some cubed and fried spam in garlic. I know there's many interpretations of SPAM, but it's pork shoulder and ham (different cuts) along with spices and preservatives. The 'fat' is actually gelatin, formed during the curing and cooking stages.
As far as the US goes, canned foods are cooked in the can, and can last years past the 'Best Buy' date if stored in a cool and dark place (no sunshine to heat the can). Even soups bought today would be viable for at least 5 or so years (barring dents and that sort of thing), though their 'Best Buy' might be a year or two down the road, with minimal degradation in flavor or texture. This includes canned spam, chicken, tuna in oil (preference) and sardines.

I'm a big fan of canned so called 'trash' fish, like anchovy, mackerel and sardine. I especially like smoked herring....aka kippers. I do wimp out and buy the skinless/boneless fillets. This stuff is pretty cheap, tasty, full of protein and other nutrients plus by being low on the food chain, more sustainable and less full of stuff like mercury. I do buy high end sustainably caught canned tuna too. Much prefer yellowfin to the more popular albacore. Think the yellowfin taste better and again is more sustainable as less in demand. One of these day I'm gonna have to get some frozen sardines and grill. But off topic.......

Can personally confirm the dangers of mercury in tuna. One year in college, I was sick of the cafeteria food, so I ate two big tuna sandwiches on kaiser rolls for both lunch and dinner (I would estimate maybe 3-4 cans per day). After a month or so, I got a weird sickness where my stomach hurt all the time, especially after eating. Not nausea, pain. Spent a week eating nothing but white bread, ginger ale, and water. Almost positive it was the mercury from the tuna building up in me. I still enjoy tuna from time to time, but in moderation now
