Some people are UA-camrs who review cameras and others are pro filmmakers who just happen to do UA-cam also. Griff falls into the pro filmmaker who just happens to do UA-cam category and thats why I love this channel!
Great video bro! R3 looks to be such a great camera! Everything I wish the 1DXIII would have lol. Oddly enough, I still love the optical viewfinder on the 1DX3, but rolling shutter suuuuuuucks. Guess that's where my Komodo comes in handy :)
These cameras like 1Dx Mark III are designed for photography, I don’t get it why everyone is talking just about video.?!? Why pros are not doing video comparing how fast is the focus which is extremely important, how accurate is focus, how good is the DR ( noise at 3200ISO -6400 ISO) Mechanical shutter vs electronic shutter on the R3 with 30fps, what are the advantages of electronic fps vs mechanical on 1Dx Mark iii, buffer in sport continues…
6:50 Ughhh another overheating warning from Canon? I was thinking of preordering the R3 but now I'll have to wait and see. Can't be having these overheating possibilities in a professional setting. Canon has to get on par with Sony in that regard
from the early reviews, compared to the r5 its a huge and significant improvement. virtually no overheating at 4k60 fps and below. but minimal warnings and occurrences for anything above that
Depends how quick it recuperates. No one shoots more than few minutes of 60p footage. There might be certain circumstances such as sports where you film a match for 30mins - 1hour but then you shouldn't be using an R3 for that scenario. At most I have burst of 30 seconds 48p+ footage. Outside of that, if I limit with my bursts, then it's fine (not that cameras should overheat, that's a serious design flaw).
As someone who is used to shooting with a C100 Mark II in the EOS standard picture profile for interviews, do you think the R3 will have a comparable picture profile setting, or will I need to start color grading all footage if I upgrade to that that level of camera?
Really enjoyed this man. Useful to get this perspective. Most of my video work is in the rain so that sealing really matters, it’s gonna be interesting to test!
@@GriffinConway I do all sorts of run and gun stuff but one of my main clients right now is a farm. They work in all weather and I spend a few days each month on site. Especially over the winter in the north of England we don’t get much nice weather. I was planning on picking up a C70 as an A-cam but I’m honestly thinking I’d kill it.
I always enjoy you and this channel…first time I’ve disagreed with you…the C70 build quality is not pretty good. It’s atrocious for the cost and compared to any other Canon camera I’ve ever held. My screen did the same and I baby my stuff. Such a shame
All good! I appreciate your input and hearing your perspective. I don’t find the build quality to be much different than the c200’s, aside from the horrible screen hinge. Canon replaced my screen hinge for free and now it’s been working great ever since then
Actually I had sunscreen on my face from earlier in the day and I was sweating a ton and it made the sunscreen drip in my eyes. It was stinging a little but nothing too bad!
Ya sorry man. That ones in the backlog. Unfortunately since I’m not a “youtuber” I can’t always release all the content I want. My real work on sets picked up heavily, plus I just got married last month so it’s been a busy season.
Continuos RAW CinemaDNG at 12bit for up to nearly 2 hours to an external portable (stick size) 2TB SSD, connected via USB? That''ll be the petite Sigma FP/FP L then.
Hey Griffin, How is the R3 with EF adapter glass? Does the autofocus work well? I don't want to have to buy all new RF glass, as I have all EF glass. Does the Canon EF to RF adapters perform well with your L series Lenses?
Without watching the video, no :) The reason why C70 is the best is it's ergonomics and DR, both of which R3 doesn't have, or any other mirrorless for that matter.
Hey dude I’ve been following your content for awhile and I just have to say it’s refreshing compared other videographers/UA-camrs out there! Quick question... what SD cards do you use for your C70? About to get my hand on one (after a year of deciding my next camera) and I do a lot of events/documentary work so I need something reliable! Thanks in advance and keep up the good work 🤙🏽
The Canon R3 is just as weather sealed as any of the !DX series. Just make sure if using the EF/RF adapter that the attached lens has the weather mount ring. Some third party lenses do not, hence reduces the weather sealing. One thing for sure, once using the mirrorless R3, it's going to be hard going back to the DSLR cameras.
Hey Griffin, I recently purchased your Luts for my new C70 and error occurs when trying to apply them to the C70. Any advice or help would be appreciated
I think that’s a totally fair opinion, especially if you are primarily a video shooter. I know a lot of people prefer the significantly more rugged and durable body compared to those other cameras and some also prefer 20fps mechanical shutter for sports. But on the video side it’s really just the 60p in raw with no overheating that I like
@@GriffinConway What's the significance of 20 fps mechanical when the rolling shutter is alot better on the EOS R3 with a completely silent shutter? 1DX sounds like a rifle being shot in a hide. And if you're paying £6,999 for a 1DX MK3 with the same sensor and performance as an R6, minus a few mechanical fps and 'body', then, you do you. I've seen alot of people make an excuse for a 1DX body because they simply don't take care of their gear.
Very curious about the R3 as well. I have an R6 right now for my photo-taking needs while on location and know that I could use it in a pinch for video. I haven't put it through its paces yet for video usage exclusively though. Thanks for the thoughts as always.
Thanks for watching Scott. I think for work like what you do the AF tracking improvements might make it a great option, but time will tell how it performs in the real world
Excited to get my r3. I’d be lying if I said I wont miss my 1dx though. But that evf, flip screen, minimal rolling shutter, bump in MP for photos, and 60p raw with AF is too good to pass up. The future proof glass is also a plus. Gonna be a good day when I get the call it’s in!
Love your videos man, keep um coming! We have almost the exact same equipment so your insights are super valuable to me. I had an R5 for a little while and sold it because the overheating warnings were stressing me out. Used the money to put toward an R3, hoping that does better in that area, we'll see. I love my C70 but I'm looking forward to getting the R3 for the full frame, autofocus, and IBIS.
The R3 bets the C70 and the 1DX, Why, it has everything these both cameras lack, the R3 can adapt the NDs adaptor so full frame with EF lens like the C70. It has the build quality of the 1DX. It also will have an accessory from Tascam in the future that fits on the shoe to give better sound inputs. Has better AF than both of these cameras. It also rocks 6K raw 12 bit. The only real downside is the CODEX and this is being fixed with the latest Apple M1 processors, so over time becoming less of a problem. I did heaps of research on the C70 and R3 and the only thing that is really going for the C70 is the Dynamic range and this is not enough to swing me over the R3.
Great points. I think the R3 with the rascal audio solution should be great. I doubt the R3 will have a waveform monitor and the overheating in 4K 120p will likely not be as good as the c70 since you can’t shoot unlimited. Either way I think it will be an amazing camera for sure
@@GriffinConway true, it doesn't have a waveform, but the limit for 120fps is pretty long so not a big issue like the R5. The C70 does have some good points but weighting it up for me, not enough. If the C70 was a full frame sensor with hybrid AF quality it would kick arse, but it doesn't.
I think it will be a great replacement for 1dx… the real question is will it be a good alternative to c70. Almost ordered a c70 but no raw, no evf, ok but not great af and no photo is not ideal for me. Now only need to see if the dynamic range in the r3 is closer to c70 than r5. Fingers crossed.
