To get Zakk Wylde's guitar tone do this simple trick

- I love the sound of Zakk Wylde's Guitar tone, but I was never able to get close to his sound even though I had so much of the same gear he did.
Today I'll show you how to set up your Marshall amp and how to hook up your stomp boxes correctly
The Gibson style guitar I used in the video can be found here

That's the exact sound i wanted when i was 14. I could never get it. All i needed was a Marshall and a bunch of pedals. I was so close😂
Hahaha 🤣🤣👊👊 if it makes you feel any better, I've had this equipment for over 15 years and just figured it out this week 🤷
@@ToneChaser29What’s the amp setting that Zakk always use?
@@tieukhavu8832lmao……..😂
@@bobdorothy9719 Do you know the answer?
not really I had the whole pedal board with the rare roto vibe get a axe fx3 and a nice power amp then you have zakk and more
I saw Pride & Glory live on tour (Thank God, best record of all time), and I saw his pedalboard with my own eyes. Rotovibe, chrome 535 Crybaby wah, SD-1 Super Overdrive, CE-5 Chorus. That was all. Straight into his JCM 800s. Those old amps did not have effects loops unless perhaps they were modded. But live and recording are two different animals as we all know.
Now I saw Zakk with Gen AXE and really could not see what he was doing
BUT The Master Model Zakk JCM 800 signature edition has an effects loop which is what Mr Tone Chaser is using. The Back says "Master Model Lead"?
2203ZW
But this amp came along in 2002 or so.
so did he have a tech install effects loops into his 800s? probably.
The most Underrated Under-heard album ever.
Zakk NEVER uses the effects loop. His chorus pedal is in front of the amp, and is actually what splits his signal into his left and right channels - this is a huge part of his live sound. In the studio, however, the Symphonic chorus was of course applied to his dirty sound in post with the rest of the effects. So roughly, live sound = chorus in front, studio sound = chorus in, but the chorus in front won't sound totally right unless you're in stereo, and the chorus in the loop won't sound totally right because it's being colored by the power amp and cabinet.
Exactly. If you use Zakk's live rig, it's not going to sound exactly like his recorded studio tone. It sounds more like in the studio (specifically No More Tears) he recorded the guitars dry and then ran them through the Yamaha spx90 to get the stereo chorus sound. Then live he ran a chorus to make the guitar sound closer to the doubled sound he had on the records.
Fun fact. Zakk always used a 100’ cord from a 1970s black& decker hedge trimmer for powering his amps.
I can confirm this. I saw Zakk at the Coconut Teazer in Hollywood in that early 90's (I think the songs would become Pride and Glory stuff). Pedals were all into the front end: wah, BOSS SD-1, Dunlop Rotovibe , with BOSS chorus splitting the signal L/R to two JCM-800's/412's. MASSIVE tone!
ok what does "infront" mean? like do u just plug in the pedal and keep it infront of the amp? in studio does he put the chorus inside the amp head or cabinet?
Exactly 👌. I did a video about this a few years ago: ua-cam.com/video/1c7aEOJtSlM/v-deo.htmlsi=zu-eQSQ-FAO8RASK
Holy balls. There it is. I've wanted that sound for decades. I've tried solid state clones but they just didn't have that Zakk sound. Thank you for this.
The trick: "be reincarnated as Zakk Wylde in your next life"
EV EVM12L speakers are a must also. One thing to note is original 2203s didn’t have an efx loop like the reissues. So he either had them modified or used a line out box into a wet/dry/wet setup or just wet/dry.
I believe people forget that speakers translate the tone. I glad you pointed that out.
Yup The EV Black Label speakers are the secret to Zakk’s signature sound.
on this early records he had the g12t75 speakers the evvm12l he used later
Randy Rhoades used Altec Lancing speakers which are allot like the EV EVH speakers
Uhh one problem the original jcm800 didn't have an effects loop . I actually had Zakk sign my Marshall JCM800 4010 combo, apparently that's what he recorded No Rest for the Wicked on was the combo , not even the head lol. Biggest thing that improved the sound on that combo was when I installed an Eminence DV-77 Mick Thompson speaker. In the studio they also pan the stereo chorus to fatten up the sound too. Very different. I actually run a Radial JD7 Injector rack unit that feed 4amps simultaneously with a stereo chorus and it sounds huge, freaking loud, but huge and plenty of headroom.
time based effects into the effects loop? Wow you're a genius!
😂
Lol
But in this particular case, he's got a point.. I've been on the same quest for years, and absolutelly everywhere else will show the chorus pedal in front of the amp as a major factor (including Zakk himself, in many many "Rig Rundown" types of videos), even because that's what uses to create his stereo signal chain... So, in this case, it's pretty surprising actually
*doh*
@@danielcaparroz299the reason it doesn’t sound the same is because he uses his chorus in the front to spilt to two different heads
My personal favorite Zakk tone is "No Rest For The Wicked". MASSIVE!!
I believe that Zakk had the “Widowmaker built by Lee Jackson.
@@paulworsdale4928 Oh ok. I had read an article in a 2001 Guitar Player mag where Zakk mentioned using a Bogner of some sort and several Marshalls of years past on "No Rest". Your probably right though. I have no clue.
I’ve been chasing that sound for years, thank you so much. It’s like Christmas all over again.
This is truly the first review vid that I loved everything about, Start to finish. You did research and tested it, explained everything perfectly, AND the demo was spot...on.. subscribed! Chops are sick too brother.
Really great Zakk soloing. Good feeling and timing.
Awesome playing and tone brother! Thank you.😊
Incredible playing, thanks for sharing! 🤟
The man found the holy grail! 🥲
Thank you, been looking for this for 13 years..
Nice 🤘😁🤘 Zakk's tone on the "No more tears" album is my absolute favorite !
Before I moved out of the US, I had one of those Yamaha SPX90 rack units. When I learned Zakk used it, I plugged it up to get the No More Tears sound, and it was freaking epic. I had so much fun.
Hey man this is a killer video you really do get pretty close to Zakks tone. I also wanna say you do a great job with the editing and the thumbnails.
Excellent Sound and playing thanks for the tips
the phaser would sound better in the front instead of the effects loop. everything else you said is spot on.
Yeah I’ve never been able to get a pleasant tone outa my script phase 90 in the effects loop😐before OD seems to work best for me🤘
This took me years to figure out. Wish I had this video 20 years ago! ❤❤❤
you cracked that sound, and what a sound it is. excellent!
Great sound, thanks for the info. Much appreciated!!! Keep Rockin 🤘🏻
Nice work…love the sounds 🤘😎🤘
Great freakin video , long live the Prince and all his awesome guitarist , and your right all the modulation effects sound so much better through the loop , have a happy Halloween
I've been playing full stereo for decades now - I just cannot live without it, and I will agree with many posts on here that stereo is the key to Zakks tone. If you don;t have two amps, the using the effects loop is a great improvement over trying to use time based pedals in front of the amp, but often chorus and phaser type effects tend to get a bit overwhelming (EVH always used his phaser in front of the amp and it is surprisingly musical there). The beauty of using a stereo chorus in front of two amps is that you get the full stereo seperation but the preamps give proper coloration to each channel, so it takes the edge off the chorusing effect and sounds more natural - and you have additional control over each tone stack.
Thank you for showing love for time after time. I love that song, and the solo too!
I has the entire solo up, but youtube blocked the video worldwide as there was a claim put on the video. 😪
His (and Nick C.) BLS live boards in 2000.
Crybaby Wah, Rotovibe, SD-1, Stereo CE-5.
Using the stereo output from the CE5 they went straight to 2 JCM 800 heads (no effects loop) with 200w EV speakers in all of the cabs.
Finally its figured out for us.Thanks bro
Incredible tone !
Awesome job. In point !
He uses EVM12L which makes a massive difference. I have some and nothing compares.
Absolutely nothing compares.
So awesome! Finally hearing the same sounding pinch harmonics. Thank you
Hell yeah!! 👊👊👊
Good vid, man. Informative. Thanks.
Excellent video Man!, great playing.
Thanks for that!! You nailed it!! I have that old Yamaha SPX. Never realized he used that. It’s been sitting collecting dust for several years now.
Excellent content. Thanks🙂🤘
Nice video. Just got back into playing guitar and will use some of these tips!
Thanks for the tips. Your ‘Zak’ chops are awesome my friend
Thanks brother
Right on you figured out the effects loop aka power amp in and preamp out, it's a game changer for sure. Great tone by the way!
Dude this is an incredible video!
Thanks man great info 👍🎸🎸
That was AWESOME bro! Great playing too.
Thanks!!!!
Thank you. You're awesome brother
Thank you, i have been searching for this sound for years. I am using an EVH head and guitars and it works well. With a little adjustment you can get a nice Robin Trower sound. Thanks again.
Snuck in that riff from the Shine On outro from Pride and Glory ! Great video man
Great video!!!
I love the way you broke down so we can achieve Zakk Wylde's sound.
It's AWESOME!!
I just wanted to add a workaround, so to speak.
Since not everyone has the means or is in a position to buy to buy a Marshall JCM 800.
You can achieve the same sound by using a Fender amp or any modeling amp by adding either a JHS Angry Charlie or a Boss Angry Driver pedal in with your effects line.
For those who aren't aware of these pedals the JHS Angry Charlie is a JCM 800 modeler.
And the Angry Charlie is a collaboration between JHS and Boss pedals.
It's a cross of the Angry Charlie and a Blues Driver.
Both pedals will give you the Marshall JCM 800 sound any clean amplifier.
Hope that helps.
Again, great video!!
Excellent video ty
Thanks bud !!!! I have a similar set up !!! I saw no more tears tour wiked I thought zakk never looked at his guitar all night !!!
This is cool and sounds great
Well done man , great video, sincerely well done
Well done brother! Nice tone.
Sounds really good 👍🏻 great playing too. 👊🏻
Brilliant explanation! 👏 ❤
Hey another thing maybe worth noting… back when Zakk started out, the Chorus Ensemble was made only analog. A few years later they changed it over to a digital version and you can’t find many of the analog ones now. I’ve owned both and A/Bd them and there is definitely a tonal difference. The analog one is deep and rich while the digital one is pretty stale sounding. If you have his signature Chorus it’s modeled off the analog one so you’ll be close enough, but if you’re buying Boss make sure to get the pink labeled analog Chorus Ensemble from back in the day.
This. I have two of the old CE5’s and there’s a difference to the digital ones. Just more smooth.
The best Chorus i ever owned is the Ibanez CS9
Believe it or not, the yellow Behringer copy “Ultra Chorus” sounds even better than the old Super Chorus. Get one for cheap and A/B them through your loop. I’m telling you..
@@Kevin.Kelly. yeah I’m sure it’s based on the super chorus or whatever, but we were talking about the old Chorus Ensemble
@@-MyNameHere- my mistake.
Brilliant dude thanks for the video it is very informative
Thanks Gray 👊👊👊
Great video even if Zakk didn't use a loop during shaved years obviously it sounds really good here and could help others achieve good Zakk tone. I use a wet dry setup with my 91' ensemble into two Yamaha Thr10x then have a bit of my built in chorus on to give extra swirl! Sounds great at living room volumes. Of course not like a jcm800 but I love the tone these little amps make!!!
Yeah, sounds really great. Did you consider that the chorus is actually not so much stereo as it’s wet/dry? So he can run them in a chain to the front but the dry rig will maintain the clarity underneath the chorus tone. Set volumes to taste on each half stack and voilà. Very similar results to running mods/echos in a loop. To the best of my knowledge not every JCM800 has an fx loop. So there is this also to consider. But you’re tone sounds great on a mono setup.
Great video and information ! 😊
Thanks for sharing this Tone Chaser . . . all the best & stay well
And thank you for the awesome comment Stan
Way to nail the sound my friend - you are going to Heaven!
🤣🤣🤣👊👊👊
Awesome tone
Wow!!! Mean tones on one end and gentle melodies on the other. I’m buying them.
great tone
Good job on this video!
you play like a pro, thanks for share
Nailed it! Well done sir.
Thank you kindly!
Good stuff and same story here...got all the gear but struggled to get a decent Zakk tone. It never dawned on me to try the chorus in the loop...I'll have to try that today!
I have a Marshall JCM800 and Les Paul- gonna give that setup a try this weekend. Thanks for the info! FYI: I enjoy your tool videos too- keep up the good work.
Haha, thanks David 👊👊👊
I've only ever ran pedals all through the effects loop. I've never though about splitting them like that im gonna have to try that when I get home. 👍
Nice job brother! You got Zach down! Killer review nice chops too
Absolutely killer video man! Thanks for this. Subbed🙂
Appreciate it Philip and welcome to the channel brother
So cool. I'm a drummer, but I've had sssssoooooooo many buddies that couldn't figure out how to get that sound.
great video, i was hoping some Miracle Man demonstration! favorite zakk song
I still can’t get that sound but you cracked it man awesome and thank you!
Thanks brother 👊👊👊
Wow sounds great 👍
Nice video and nice chops! :)
You indeed cracked the code - nice work brother
Dude!! Nice playing there towards the end!
Hey, thanks!
No more tears is the holy grail of guitar tone.
nice work
great vid thanks
Damn fine work.
Awesome video! Subscribed!
IIRC the swirly chorus sound he used was the “symphonic” preset on a Yamaha SPX-90.
Valhalla dsp has a free plugin that recreates it. I think it’s their Space Modulator plugin.
800, Chorus and EMG 81 that’s how ya do it! Love it
Marshall ON TOP!!!!
Love 4 cable method for my fx. Pretty much how I've done it for years. If you're using your amp for the distortion, makes an even bigger difference.
Don't forget the always overlooked 18 volt battery clip mod..👍 Great video, Great Tone✊
Bro killin it. 😮
Dig it. Thank man
you are an amazing player my man
Thanks brother 🙏
Great job sir
Thanks William 👊👊👊
Damn, great job that does sound a lot like his tone.
Excellent bro.
MAn you have cracked it that sounds dam good.
Dang, I've been watching your tool review videos for years never knew you played guitar
Hahaha that's awesome 👌
Very informative video
His BLS chorus pedal is awesome, I use it for my Alex Lifeson like tone. I play a lot of Rush songs.
SOUNDS GREAT BROTHER
Thanks Jason 👊👊👊
Great video man! Awesome playing too.
Just wanted to say you are right about everything except Zakk doesn't run his Phaser in the effects loop. He puts it in front of the overdrive like Eddie van Halen does!
You are correct about the chorus and delay pedal though.
Anyways great tone, you really nailed the Zakk tone!
