Susan, I know this is from a year ago, but believe me, this simple video where you literally show step by step has finally helped me figure out what I was doing wrong on my stencils! I didn't do the black box (or shape). I have bought so many supplies thinking that was the issue and I had the right stuff all along, lol! I am grateful for the literal, "first do this, then do this, make sure to do this..." kind of instruction. A lot of advanced crafters forget that us newbies just want to be successful THEN we will learn all of the other nuances related to the project. THANK YOU! My investment in my machine was not in vain after all, lol! ❣❣
Thank you for making a straight to the point useful video!!! ❤ Found so many of these that were 40 mins long talking about nonsense. Yours was spot on. THANK YOU 🎉
I have a cricut joy and wanted it for stencil cutting. Well….it’s been 2 yrs and it’s still gathering dust. Couldn’t figure it out! Hopefully my brain will absorb your wonderful instruction. Thank you!
I hope this helps. Just remember to make sure you have just one layer in your artwork. Look in the upper right corner and if you see layers then combine them into one.
Perfect! Just purchased a Cricut Joy yesterday afternoon with the primary intention of creating reusable stencils for mixed media art and found your video. This is precisely what I needed to know: what material to use and what settings to use and the process from beginning to finished stencil. Thank you for honing in on this use for the machine and showing us how to do it! ❣️
Thank you for this clear and concise video tutorial! So many I tried to watch before this one spent half the time trying to sell me a subscription. Exactly what I needed to figure this out and try my first project!
Thank you for this video. I am toying with the idea of purchasing a Cricut Joy specifically to make stencils for my ceramic art work and this clinched the deal.
Finally someone I can understand and follow! Your tutorial was SPOT ON! 😁👏👏 keep your tutorials slow and easy just like this one and you’ll have a TON of us following you! 😁🥰🙌 the dual video was so helpful. Only one suggestion that nobody does in tutorials. Us ‘older people’ have a very difficult time following the mouse curser around because it blends in with everything. Change the mouse curser to a bright red or hot pink to help our eyes follow where it goes on screen. I don’t understand why nobody thinks to do that. If you do this, you’ll be the person to follow…but get ready, you’re going to get a lot of subscribers! 😁🥰👍
Thank you for your feedback. When I’m at my home computer I have the software that adds o circle to follow my cursor. My laptop does not. One of these days I will invest it another license to use on my laptop. I’m planning more cricut videos so please come back.
Thank you, Susan. My Cricut Joy arrives today. I could not resist the Cyber Monday deal, of course. I will tell hubby my Maker 3 had a baby. LOL (Just a silly joke.) Great video! Ordering this material asap. ~ Happy Crafting! ~
Thank you Susan for this great tutorial! I'm getting my cricut joy soon and was a little hesitant about figuring out the whole computer part of it. 🙄 But I think we're about the same age and if you can do it, I can do it. Hopefully 🙏🏻🤞
Hi Susan, greetings from Spain. I loved your video, only come question. Is the acetate foil adhesive? I see that it fixes very well on the mat. Thanks for your wonderful TUTORIAL!!
The mat is sticky, not the acetate. I burnish it to make sure it's got a good grip on it. When the mat gets sticky you need to either get another one or apply adhesive to make the mat sticky again. I haven't tried that yet.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m about to buy my cricut. So excited! Do I need to buy the blade for cutting separately or does it come with the machine? Thank you!
No. The stickiness of the gel plate hold the acetate stencil in place. But you also need to do a few light passes over it rather than pressing too hard. That way the paint doesn’t get pushed under the stencil. After a while you get the hang of it. But if you are using the stencil without a gelli plate the dab lightly with a stencil brush. Maybe tape it down so it doesn’t move.
Thanks, this is just what I needed! Two questions though : 1) can one reduce and multiply the same design to make it a pattern? and 2) can one combine several different designs in one? That would be cool because I'd like to be able to make my own patterns.
Yes, absolutely. But you will have to join them. You will have multiple layers and that’s probably not going to work. I should do a video on that. Great idea!
@@SusanCliftonArtist I'm looking forward to that! I've been wondering if I should buy a cricut for a while and if this is possible, I think this will be on my birthday list 😊
Thanks so much for showing your formula! I have a maker and had gotten the same plastic on amazon but it wasn't cutting , I think one video even said to get the circular cutting blade . Only question I have is which type mat did you use there seems to be different options for "stickyness" ;) thanks again!
I just used the mat the mat that came with the cricut joy. Not an extra sticky one. It’s the two passes that do the trick. When you select more pressure it does 2 passes. I made lots of stencils before I had to purchase a new blade
It's this one: Grafix Ultra Clear .007 Plastic, Durable and Archival Film, Perfect for DIY Crafts, Stencils, Journals, Cards, 3D Embellishments, and More, 12" x 12", 25 Pack | amzn.to/3nM3niL
Thank you! Just the material stock I had in mind; washable, reusable, for fabric imprinting. Ordered a Cricut Joy thru Amazon, and my doorbell rang in 2.5 hours, which is incomprehensibly fast! Would have taken me longer to get dressed, go to a craft store etc. I wanted to try making small size logo prints for tShirts, small signs, wall-frame art etc. Again, thank you kindly for making this easy-to-follow video. Not an artist, just an engineer who draws staight lines 😄, but likes freehand calligraphy...whoa, just got an idea 💡
Thanks very much. I watched a video using their Stencil Vinyl on the Joy machine, but was afraid I'd have to consider the more expensive machine for reusable stencils. I'm very happy you have showed us how to use craft plastic sheets on the Joy. I want to make stencils for my ceramics projects where I can "paint" with slip. I've used store-bought stencils successfully, but the available selection is narrow (even online) and most are way too big for what I'm doing. Your technique on the Cricut Joy sounds perfect. Do you have any idea of how narrow a rectangle the Joy will cut and still produce square corners, i.e., 90º not a radius? I hope I'm expressing my question so you can understand. Thanks!
Absolutely. The Cricut I have is the bottom of the line and it works. The settings might be slightly different. Not sure. I now use a Cricut Explore 2.
This was such a wonderful and easy to follow video. Pulled my Joy out of the box and immediately watched this. But when I went to click “foil acetate” using the app on my phone it said the material was incompatible. Any help?

you just saved me 4 years later, truly thank you

I love mine. I don’t have space for a big machine and this one does everything I need.
This is the video that I needed to be sure that this product is for me. Thank you!!! Love from İstanbul.
You're so welcome! Did you see they now make a bigger Cricut Joy. It's called the Ultra. I would recommend that.
I just ordered my Cricut Joy for making stencils. I can’t wait to see what else I can do with it.
It can become addicting. Lol. Enjoy!

I love my Cricut. I finally got a bigger one.
@@SusanCliftonArtist which did you get? And why?
Thanks for this video. Nice to have simple step by step instructions ❤❤
You’re welcome 😊 I hope it helps
Susan, this is a great video! I love that you walked through the process slowly. Thanks so much!
Enjoy!
Thanks for your video ❤!! Is the best video I've found, it was short and concise!!! Easy steps to follow .. thanks again 👏🏻

So jealous. You have a maker 3. I don't have space for it in my studio. Maybe some day when I move into a bigger studio. Enjoy!
Thank you for a wonderful and easy step by step video
You are welcome 😊
I have been wanting to use my cricut for stencils for a while. Thanks! I use it now for masks. Wonderful video!!!
You are so welcome!
Thanks Susan, I purchased a Cricut Maker 3, still learning, really helpful 😀
Lucky you. Enjoy!
for printing on fabric, I like the Duralar Brand. .003ml for stencils
Interesting
I’m so excited to learn I can cut stencils with my new Cricut Joy! This was super helpful, thanks so much!
I'm glad.
Great video. Straight to the point, easy to understand. Thank you so much!!
I’m glad I could help
Thanks for your wonderful video. It helped me a lot.
Glad it helped!
This means I can also cut shrink plastic with my Cricut Joy 😍
what is shrink plastic? Now sure. I recently tested mylar that is thicker and I did have to increase the number of passes.
Shrinky Dinky is like acetate and when you put it in the oven it will shrink about half the size
@@ctmvleeuwen interesting!
Yes it is 😁
Hello Susan! I've just come across your video and if was very helpful! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
ooohhhh. This is just what I needed!! Thank you for making this video!!
We are so welcome. It's the best part of having a Cricut.
thank you for posting. I wonder if these would last in a classroom of 2nd graders. You spoke of reinforcing the edges.
The stencils I cut had rough edges so I taped them. But if you leave a border they will be fine. The craft plastic is durable.
Such a helpful tutorial! Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome! Thank you!

Enjoyed this video, Susan!
Thanks. I can’t wait to collage with my new Cricut stencils.
great tutorial.. Thank you for your time and expertise !!! Love and Peace !!
Thanks. The same to you.
can I make a stencil out of card stock? Thank you!!
Yes but with the Cricut Joy they don’t have different cutting blades. So don’t use a thick card stock.
Thank you so much for this video! I’m about to buy my cricut. So excited! Do I need to buy the blade for cutting separately or does it come with the machine? Thank you!
I use the regular fine point blade. You do need to add more pressure and at least 2 passes but it works fine.
Thank you for the video, it was wonderful! I have a Joy and you inspired me to try to make a stencil.
I’m glad. It’s so satisfying to work with your own stencils.
How do you stick the stencil down so the paint does not bleed outside of the design? It is not adhesive mylar, is it?
No. The stickiness of the gel plate hold the acetate stencil in place. But you also need to do a few light passes over it rather than pressing too hard. It’s about 4 1/2 inches wide. Maybe a little wider. So anything smaller should work.
do you think this could work with the cricut joy xtra?
Absolutely. The Cricut I have is the bottom of the line and it works. The settings might be slightly different. Not sure. I now use a Cricut Explore 2.
Help! How do you put in own designs and then make a stencil with them. Can’t get it to recognise the design and cut it.
Coming soon!
This was such a wonderful and easy to follow video. Pulled my Joy out of the box and immediately watched this. But when I went to click “foil acetate” using the app on my phone it said the material was incompatible. Any help?
I never used foil acetate. Wish I could help.
❤
Does the deep cut blade work with this machine?
I’m not sure. I only have this one. But I cut reusable stencils with craft plastic with this machine.
I think the blades for this machine are just fir the joy. So probably the answer is no.
how tiny can you go with the detail in the stencil? or just bigger cuts only?
In my newest video I use a stencil I created with natural sand. The cuts are fairly small.
@@SusanCliftonArtist Thanks! I will check it out!
