So glad I found your video. I'm currently China painting on a dozen white coffee mugs and needed a way to create an image with stencils rather than freestyle painting each mug individually. I thought about cutting designs in mylar with an Exacto knife because I don't have a Cricut machine. I will be getting one now and will be watching more of your great tutorials! I really appreciate your no nonsense, detailed instructions.
Thank you for the nice comment, Sharon. The machine definitely does come in handy. A thinner mylar like .4 or .5 might be better for bending around a tumbler. Depending on what you are doing, vinyl makes the best stencil because there is little chance of paint Bleed but...of course they are not reusable. Good luck with the machine, and thanks for watching.
Thank you! Thank you! I don’t use my cricut to cut stencils. My friend needed some cut: this is the exact material she had and I was baffled! Like you…I tried the “more” just for regular stencil, a deep cut blade, and a knife blade. I wasn’t choosing Mylar! Saved the day!
Thanks to the Airbrush Garage for great content that helped me figure this out!🙌 If you are still having trouble cutting after following the above try this too. As in the video, I have the Cricut Explorer Air 2. The fine point blade works best but you will have to cut multiple times. 1. Create a custom Mylar material one for 7.5 mm & another for 10 mm in the Cricut Design App. 2. When you create the custom material, you will have a change to tell it to cut multiple times 2x - 9x. 3. Depending on the blade: 7-7.5mm mylar cuts with 2-3x. 2x was enough for an average fine point blade. 4. For 10mm, I had to cut 8x to get a clean detail separation for stencils and I chose blockier silhouettes.
Thanks Thinkingdhop for taking the time to share that very clear step-by-step. That will be very helpful to other viewers. Thanks again, and thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! I have spent most of the day trying to figure out how to cut the .07 to no avail. It would not cut thru. I will give Mylar a try tomorrow. Glad I found you! Thanks a lot!
June, when you set the pressure to more, it double cuts. If you find it still isn't cutting through in all areas, possibly due to not the sharpest blade. You can recut. How you do this is once it is done cutting, do not press the arrow to release the mat. Hit the "C" cut button to re cut. That will definitely do it! Hope that helps.
Omg thank you so much for this tutorial you have no idea how many videos I've watched today trying to figure this out !!! It worked and cut perfectly!!!!
Thank you so much for this information, I was going to buy other blades since my machine didn’t cut through the mylar i have. Now i kniw to test it first like you showed
Great video. Simple exploration without mambo jumbo like others like to do to make impression like rocket science. Simple but very professional and informative, thank you for sharing 😅 Just one question - how many microns is 5 and 7 mil molar?
Cheryl,Glad you liked the video. Two main take-a-ways when cutting thick mylar... a sharp blade and setting your pressure to more. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching.
Thanks for the tips -- I had tried 3 times to cut just using the stencil setting not knowing that my material was thicker than Cricut's. But "mylar" and "more" pressure saved the day! The material I was using wasn't marked for its thickness so was confusing. Thanks again!
Very well done sir! I wish I could have found you earlier, your walk thru and patience are top notch. No flash, just the right amount of info. Bravo! I was in the process of ordering mylar and a deep cut blade, thought I might check out UA-cam first. Happy I did. I am now a fan and follower. I can't wait to see your other videos. Thanks again!
Jim, thanks for the nice feedback and I'm glad I could help. I have a video coming out next week on all the features and tools in Design space. Hope you check it out. Thanks for commenting and thanks for watching.
Thank you for the heads up and the quick reply! I will definitely check it out. I also want to get into airbrushing, so your channel is gold for me. I have crash coursed myself in design space to get things done, I'm sure I have more to learn. I have been using corel draw (I have had CD for several years). and design space to get compliment each other, learning snafus everywhere. Lol I do appreciate you and thank you for sharing.
If you use a non moisturized baby wipe you can clean the matt a great many times. Also one can use washable school glue sticks to adhere stencils to the matt. Wipe well after use and the stickiness comes back (until it is all the way off) of course by the time the stickiness is gone you'll need another matt. I use the Brother DX pro series cutter with Circuit or Siser products and they perform very well in the Brother. I do like the workspace that Cricut offers over the Brother workspace, however, all one has to do is export to a standard cut file and that is solved. Great Video.
Thanks for the tutorial. I was just playing around with what I had on hand and made some stencils using thin acetate sheets but was looking for a thicker choice and you answered all my questions. Excited to try out the 7 mil. Excellent content!
Tami, Glad I could help. Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching. The key is when you set it to "more" double cuts it. Keep in mind you have to make sure you have a sharp blade!
@@TheAirbrushGarage i think sharp may also be part of the issue. Ive used this blade a lot. May be time for a new one even though it does vinyl and paper okay still.
@TheAirbrushGarage How long do your blades typically last with stencils? I'm looking into getting a cutter for a similar application using thin stencil plastic for a business I'm starting, and I'm curious about long-term blade replacement costs. The cutter wouldn't be used all the time, but it would help with some material prep. Great video!
Thanks for all your hard work and I always leave your vids with another helpful tip (like the magnets and steel backer board to secure in-work projects....very cool and I hit your Amazon site and ordered it up. ) And I just ordered the Cricut Maker (may want to engrave in the future??) and these mylar sheets. Back in my AB history ...hmmm....1985 or so....we used to cut our stencils with a fine tip wood burning tool....lol....we had to move very carefully on the polystyrene for fear of burning a gapping hole in the design ....being retired and of limited art budget, I find AB stencils are not cheap and in the long run the Cricut will pay for itself. I'll keep watching man....great job!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!! Ohh my goodness I have tried so many times to cut on a thicker mil! I even bought an Ikonart because I thought you couldn't cut it deep enough on Cricut.
Just found your video... looking for a stencil substrate tutorial - gonna save this in my favorites for cricut tips! Wanted to mention - you do NOT need to throw your mats away! Just wash them in warm, soapy water with a scrubby sponge & let air dry. The stickiness comes back and clean! Not sure if you shared a later video about that, but I'd rather be annoying than you throwing unnecessary $$ away! 😁 Hugs, from Mesa, AZ 🌵
Your tutorials are very clear and concise. Thanks to you I'm finally understanding how to use my Cricut. Did you or would you make a tutorial on how to make our own designs for making templates or stencils? would you share any suggestions for how we can tell when the blade needs replacing? udaBEST!
Thank you for explaining it so clearly. I have exact same sheet/thickness and would have also use the deep cut blade. Good to know that it is not needed.

David, it will absolutely do vinyl. That is actually what the machine was intended for. You will live it. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
Thanks so much for this great video! I just got a brand new Explore 3 and tried following this but unfortunately it still isn’t cutting all the way through. So after that I tried doing a 9x cut with “more” pressure at 350 pressure, and it’s still not cutting. My stencil is a 0.0075” thick Food Safe Grafix Craft Plastic, so only ever-so-slightly thicker than yours. Do you think a thick blade is my only option now? Thanks so much!
Yes. I would try a deep cut blade. It may be due to the hardness of the plastic mat you are using. The stencils I cut are mylar, still a type of plastic but maybe not as hard. When you are successful cutting it out please let me know what you had to do. It will be very helpful to other viewers. Thank you for sharing.

David, it will absolutely do vinyl. That is actually what the machine was intended for. You will live it. Thanks for the question and thanks for watching.
Really helpful. Thank you.
I am glad you liked the video. Thanks for the comment and watching James.
EXCELLENT thank you!
Great information!
