    I use plastic poster board - about $2 for a 22" x 28" sheet at Michaels. I cut it down into 12" widths and then cut it on "Stencil Film - 0.4 mm" (pressure 341). It's nice and sturdy. I don't use spray adhesive: either I hold the stencil down by hand or I use a low-tack tape like painter's tape. For a stencil you'll want to tile (say you're looking to create an overall effect on a wall), remember to add a couple of tiny circles in the corners to use as registration marks so everything lines up correctly.

    I read somewhere that I could use my laminator to make craft plastic! Just tried it and it worked PERFECT and didn’t need to do more than one pass with my normal blade! I just passed a clear laminate sheet through the laminator to seal it and cut it as normal on the card stock setting. Such a great trick!!!!!

    New to Cricut. Lots to learn. Excellent video for a beginner.
    All the steps & terms used (like ‘weld’) around designing the stencils were a bit overwhelming. I’m sure with practice, those steps & terms become second nature.
    Looking forward to watching more of your videos.

    We were searching all over to see if these machines could cut stencils before purchasing one but could not find any info anywhere - until we came across your video. We don't want to cut vinyl letters, no scrapbooking, postcards etc., we just wanted something that could create good quality stencils. The thickness still doesn't seem thick enough but the video was still very helpful. Thanks a bunch!

    Thanks for sharing that. I’ve made a few stencils over the years with dies. I use 0.4mm Mylar. It’s the same thing that proprietary stencils are made of. It’s easy to use and very durable. 🌼 I don’t use adhesive either, I use the Wendy Vecchi Stay-tion. The magnets hold the stencil and paper down fast.

      Do you use a deep cut blade with the Mylar? Is the 0.4 Mylar easy to obtain at like Michaels or Hobby Lobby? Do you use a special pressure setting other than just the default or more setting? My son is asking me to make him reusable stencils and want to do it right. I have a Cricut Maker.

    Great Tutorial... I used the same plastic stencil sheets (0.007) and used the same settings. however it did not cut all the way through for me. I had to force my Maker to cut twice. I initially just edited the 'transparency' material and later I ended up creating my custom material which I named Stencil 0.007 and used the same pressure as the Transparency but activated the multiple cuts option. I tried 4 times first (overkill) then down to 3 and 2 was good. Just throwing this out there in case anyone has the same issue as I did.

That said, though, buying stencils to use once, maybe twice, was quickly adding up, and tbh, it was almost the price of getting a shiny new Cricut Explore Air 2! Yeah, no. Hi Scott! I don't know if you put a topcoat on your wood first but it definitely helps your vinyl to adhere to your wood! This is what you have to do with furniture transfers I've used also. A nice water base I use is Minwax Polycrylic or Varathan triple thick Polyurethane water base that is a great water repellent on surfaces that would get a lot of use. My daughter used it on her custom wooden bathroom sink counter and her boys leave water on the counter top lol truly tried and no damage 😉 hope this helps you!

If not, and remains sticky after one use, what do you suggest using to cover the back -- acetate sheets? Lastly, any recommended distance for spraying the reposition adhesive?

      Since the black housing for the deep cut is the same as the fine point you don't need to worry about it. Cricut assumes it's the fine point even though it's the deep cut.

    I purchased the blade and plastic sheet recommendations from Rachel and used the settings for one pass and it did not cut through. Made a second one and had it cut twice and still not cutting through. Got any more advice?

    Hi, great video.. is there a way to where we don't have to make the square around the stencil so that I can binder organize them using the binder holes.? Hopefully i make sense .. thanks!

      You might want to use a different less thick material if that's what you want to do with it.

    Love your tutorial, Rachel. Life saver. My only problem is my Cricut Maker (just got it a year ago) doesn't let me use the deep cut blade (only lets me use the fine point once I select the transparency material). Any idea on how I can override it? Soooo hope you have an answer. Thanks again for the great video!!

    • @MakersGonnaLearn

      Thank you, you're so sweet!! Just put the blade in, Cricut cannot sense the difference between the Fine Point, Deep Cut, or Fabric Bonded blades, so just place it in the clamp :)

      @@MakersGonnaLearn it won't let me cut it without replacing the deep cut blade. It does sense that the fine point isnt there. Ive tried multiply times.

      @annetteanderson3375 try setting up a custom setting that will use the deep cut blade. However just wondering if you may have the knife blade confused with the deep cut blade? Deep cut has a black housing but is the same shape, with no gear at the top, as the fine blade housing.

    Thank you so for getting me through making a stencil. It makes big projects easier. I have one question though. When there letters with a centerpiece, i.e., O D A, how do you keep the inside within the stencil. I'm holding down the center of O, making a mess. The middle of the A is so small and the D is almost as difficult. Really appreciate your help. Genevieve

    • @MakersGonnaLearn
      @MakersGonnaLearn  4 роки тому

      Hello! So, this can be a tricky process! The best thing to do in our opinion is just to hold it down with the back of a paintbrush or something while you're stenciling.

    • @webwarren
      @webwarren 3 роки тому

      Stencil fonts usually have breaks in the cross bar of the A, or part of the O, D, P, R, Q, B to prevent "the inside" from slipping or falling out. There are two ways to fill in these breaks: one, to manually add them in once you've lifted the stenci; two, to make two almost-identical stencils with letter the breaks in different places. Use the first stencil to paint, marker, color, etc. your substrate. Lift the stencil and let everything dry. Then place the second stencil over the now-dry project, exposing the breaks in those letters, and color everything in (essentially, adding a second coat to most of the letters).
