      I think it's because progressive metal is such a niche genre and I only cater to a unique category of drummers and other musicians, maybe if prog continues to catch on in the world we'll become bigger :) I'm really heartened by your encouraging words though and I believe this family will grow a lot bigger in time to come !

      @@ArtOfDrummingHQ without your interpretation of this, I’m not sure I could have ever applied it to anything else outside of this song. I would have just forced those groups of dotted 32nd’s and never understood them. Thank you so much!

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  3 роки тому

      My explanation has holes though, you can check this video made by Shaun Crowder for more of this concept. He explains it the best on UA-cam(from a drummer's perspective) ua-cam.com/video/xv05y31U1p4/v-deo.html

    • @mattbdrums_3171
      @mattbdrums_3171 3 роки тому

      @@ArtOfDrummingHQ that is a great video too, however your explanation was plenty informative enough. You presented the concept, and I got to study a concept completely foreign to me! When I am forced to do the math and coordination myself, I actually grasp the concept. Rather than just watching a video to understand it quickly, then never applying it.
      You ever give that pattern right before the breakdown a go with the "1 and a 2 and a 3" pattern on the ride? That one took me much longer haha. I had the feet right away, but that hand pattern took several days of 4-8 hour practice sessions for me to work it up over the kicks. I'm attempting this whole song now. Might be done in 2025 at this rate....lol

    Drummer novice here. I loved how the jump from 88 to 118 brought out the groove of the song. The space between snare and cymbal was so sparse at the lower tempos that they sounded random, but at 118 they were pristine.

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому +1

      Yeah it's the same tempo as The Woven Web, I think AAL must feel most comfortable playing these patterns at 118bpm. Good of you to point it out :)

    Double bass is one of my weak points. You absolutely nailed this. There seems to a lot of things to consider when playing double bass from tension, to the weaker foot, latency, to gear. But really it's preference and practice. Would love to hear from the drumming community on this and any videos you can do with how you gained experience would be helpful

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому +2

      Hey Andy! I intend to do a video on double bass some time in the near future. Like you said it boils down to preference and practice. But I believe in quality over quantity and that comes from having limited amounts of time to practice and I believe everyone here has other daily commitments that sometimes takes more priority over our drum practice time. Hence yes I really want to do a video to share my experiences on this subject and how I went about it in my own unique way to make the best of my double bass practice.
      Anyways fantastic question, cheers Andy!

    • @harriswangberg
      @harriswangberg 6 років тому +3

      One thing no one made very clear, but in hindsight seems pretty obvious, is double bass work especially at high speeds requires an intense amount of endurance and therefore motivation. I spent about a year training my feet for for an hour a day and eventually got to a point where I could strike my bass drum pad about 8 times per second per foot and hold that for 5 minutes cleanly. Then after a few days away from the kit (camping, socializing, whatever) I'd lose a significant amount of endurance and speed and have to retrain to gain it back.
      Moving quickly and cleanly is going to require daily practice and maintenance. At the least you are going to want to dedicate 20 minutes a day just to maintain a tempo like that. As I wasn't in a hardcore metal band writing music that requires double bass work like that, I lost motivation to continue that practice and now have decided I would rather spend that time to work on other techniques (poly rhythms, odd times, etc.)
      Mike Johnston has a great video for improving foot speed. ua-cam.com/video/Q9_MpVt8Eok/v-deo.html
      To adapt this to your left foot, simply move your right hand to the ride and strike the bow and bell of the ride and let your left foot work the bass.
      In fact, a quick search here on youtube for "Mike Johnston foot speed" brings up quite a few videos and techniques you can pretty easily modify to work your off-foot bass.
      Hope all that offers some help. Good Luck!

    What. THe. FUCK. That was waaay over my head. Here I thought it was just a herta-like grouping that switches to triplets at the end of the phrase.

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому +3

      Yeah I thought it was sextuplets to quintuplets too before I got the transcription haha, man was I wrong.

    • @TheApostleofRock
      @TheApostleofRock 6 років тому

      Well....I mean the kick itself. Aren't dotted 32nds just another way to write 16th triplets? The kick is playing the same thing from when it's written as triplets to when it changes to dotted 32nds, right? It's just a better way to be able to write the stack accents in.

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому +2

      Oh dotted notes are not the same as triplets, there's quite a subtle difference and the dotted 32nd notes are slightly longer than 16th triplet notes . Therefore the decelerating effect you hear at the end when they switch from 3 16th note triplets to 8 dotted 32nds. You can prove it to yourself if you have a program/drum machine/metronome that can do that. Program a bar of 16th note triplets alongside a bar of dotted 32nds, they won't be in sync and you'll notice you can squeeze more 16th note triplets into the same bar. I hope that helps!

      Wei Lung Wong yes I did notice after writing that comment and thinking about it more. I think I was just in denial. I didn't want to think about Matt's mastery over subdivisions haha.

    Can you do a lesson on "the glass bridge" by animals as leaders I've always wanted to know how to play something similar to this song

      Would love to Alexis but due to the immense traffic of requests and limited time I only prioritize requests for my Patreons as a reward for their extra support. Thank you for showing interest in my videos though :)

      Maybe another patreon will request that or I can do something similar to that to help you out in the future, thanks for all your support!!!

      He and Tosin and Javier are really nuts. They still confuse the heck out of me every time but in a magical way :)

    Also, that transcription includes a 64th rest.. like wtf 😂

      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому +3

      Yeah hahaha, I don't know why Matt did it that way, perhaps it's more correct notation wise? but it's easier to just write all dotted 32nds like in my transcription :)

    Any idea on if/when the tutorial for Stranger Things's chorus parts will drop? :)

      Oh I didn't realize that was still sort after so I had put Stranger Things aside to do these other videos, I'll get it out in 3 weeks time!

      Wei Lung Wong Alright, thank you for your dedication! I recently became interested in learning the song because I haven't really tried a song that challenging yet and thought it would be lots of fun. Your videos are going to be a big help :D

    Do you guys think some drum parts are just easier to play by ear than through sheet music. At least that happens to me sometimes.

    • @ArtOfDrummingHQ
      @ArtOfDrummingHQ  6 років тому

      Yeah it happens to me too :) Although sheet music can help you to understand things in a more mathematical and accurate light. But the main thing about sheet music for me is that it allows me not to have to memorize parts when I don't have the time.

    I am sure the explanation at the beginning made perfect sense but my nose started bleeding half way through...it might be uncorrelated.
