he's a metal-jazz-rock-prog-odd times-poly-fusion guy. astonishing
And Gospel ....
And Djent
and funk for SURE
prog and jazz = fusion
metal and rock = fusion
odd time = prog
He is a Progressive Drummer in short.
Even some good Ole Gospel chops. He can do it all.
Seriously awesome that one of the best drummers in the world posts drum cam videos of complete, unedited live sets with one of the best bands in the world.
He's the people's drummer
it really is. class personified.
Amen!!!
In a similar vein, Polyphia's always posting official playthroughs of their shit, Clay's drumming too, which is awesome. Love the emphasis on creating digital content these bands have nowadays.
I wish more people did it, I love eric moores drum cams, but he never post them anymore, gotta love it.
50:40 that was actually me proclaiming my love for matt....
that had to be the most amazing show i have ever been to...
how he do that??
Lmao
Very thankful to have such easy access to legendary drummers like this. I had to pay like $60 for Dave Weckl videos back in the day. Thanks Matt for the free access. Happy to return the favor in the form of album purchases, merch and live tickets.
My thoughts exactly! I try to support the creators I like too - that's amazing to hear there are still some like that out there.
If I was this damn good I'd would want them people out there to know for free
That’s how musicians could make money back in the day … sad we can’t do that today
Just did that after literally wiping my tears of joy after this video.
Thank you Matt for the cam and the excellent non saturated, well balanced sound of your drum part. After listening to this video I just pre-ordered the Parrhesia Gold Nugget Vinyl and bought the Grid Dye T-Shirt just so I can have a dyed shirt too! 👕🤩
@@matthewmalphrus2906it aint sad
Musical human evolution - 1:14:38 - Complex polyrhythm claps 👏
Thats how you know theres a ton of musicians in the crowd \m/
So Sick!
7/8 Signature, complex polymeter claps.
When they came to Dallas, the crowd was able to get it too. I was impressed. The only time I had ever seen someone get a crowd to successfully engage in polyrhythmic claps was on Snarky Puppy’s tiny desk performance on UA-cam. 😂🎵🎶🎵🎶👏🏾
don't forget about the polymeter goodness at 1:10:33 oof!
The claping is good but it's just in 5
I was front row for this show, it was my first concert, blew me away!
I see you.
Yeah it was my first concert too as well as my first time seeing AAL Live. I'm in the very front. Burgundy shirt. It was rough being up there lol Definitely dope meeting Matt. He's a cool dude.
Hell of a first concert then.
@@Animefreakinfiniti7 Oh yeah so you had like 4 or 5 guys pulled over you by security then huh lol
@@SkylaneMusic lol, That was gnarly! Hopefully no one’s night was ruined by that.
I was mid crowd in front of tosin.
Best drummer in the world rn
thanks man!
@@HerbalistGuybrush Matt, Is this you?
Matt Garska is so inspiring! He's inspired me to quit playing drums. Seriously, Matt is already considered one of the greatest drummers ever, and he's still so young.
It’s not a competition
Pick up those sticks and make music
quit being a cry baby and pickup your sticks and start practicing.
If there was an olympics for drums, Matt would take 90% of gold medals.
the only ones he wouldn't win are for playing slow and playing the same thing for more than one measure....
@@RustyDodd lol salty much
@@MrTisjeboy ?
@@RustyDodd right, you need a different temperament for this playing. but what he is doing is way more complex any way...
@@RustyDodd if only you knew
no worries, i got you guys. you can skip the boring part and start at 00:01!
Every single time I hear 19:00 I grow weak in my knees... even while siitting... he's literally a magician
Matt's drumming is the thing that brings me tears of joy while I watch. Such beautiful playing.
if you have day job you cant play never like this..he is amazing
The drum tech needs massive props on this setup. So sooooo tight!
I would love to hear what Matt is listening to during one of their songs.
Clicks and guitars
Radio
Audiobooks
I’d imagine it’s what Tosin and Javier are playing at the moment.
@@kenmorgan4496 nah, impossible
I’m convinced this guy is one of the best drummers alive right now. Holy guacamole! Matt, you are a true master of your craft and I can’t wait to see you live.
When Tomas Haake calls out as being an inspiration for todays drummer must feel pretty fuckin good
Holy shit. Gordian Naught might be my favorite drum track right now. Need that red miso playthrough!
NEED right hahahha
ua-cam.com/video/bKJ7pTs_SOE/v-deo.html
You ain't kiddin.
PLEASE NEVER TAKE THIS DOWN MATT. The amount I've learned just by watching this entire set once is crazy. Thanks a lot for this
I usually see youtube videos over 15-20 min and never wanna sit there and watch.. An hour and half of Matt? Count me in.
When I look at his hair and beard and I listen to his drumming... We lost Bonham, but we still have Garstka!
ghost notes everywhere! wow amazing sound
They’re so unbelievably tight now. Wow.
The amount of control is beautiful, nothing is forced. The finesse is never lost

Excuse me sir, it clearly states on their setlist that the track is titled Thots and Prayers.
Yo, you are a hero, bro! Rock on!
Why did you go through all this effort when the songs are already marked in the scrubber? Lmfao
@@billmint8122 because they weren't when i watched the video. and for mobile users.
@@billmint8122 Because when the video was uploaded 9 hours ago, the setlist wasn't up yet in the description of the video along with the scrubber. This was for us early birds who watched the video right after it was uploaded.
I was literally just wishing I could relive this concert forever-it was a blast!
Careful what you wish for! Don't say that when there's a genie around! lol
Love how casual MG looks while playing this stuff as if he's not playing some of the most technical drum parts known to man
Even outside of this video (which is obviously drum-centric), Matt really seems to be stealing the show. This latest album is the icing to that cake - he deserves all the love and attention! I say this as a lifelong guitarist and gigafan of Tosin & Javier
yeah legit: Matt's the most interesting thing about AAL nowadays for sure.
@@DavySolaris Matt is the most interesting thing nowadays period.
Like how the crowd at 33:40 is clapping in 4/4 while the song is in 19/8 😂😂, at least it sounds that way to me haha
I hear it in 15/16
@@warwickaudio i'm sure you do
It is indeed in 19
Playing the whole set is an inconceivable accomplishment. A feat of the body and mind.
It's amazing to me how much Tempting Time has evolved over time! I remember when the album first dropped, people talking about "good luck finding a human to play these drum parts".
I'd love to hear a recorded version with Matt's drum parts
I saw them with a previous drummer one of my first times seeing them..
I'm not sure which drummer it was. From what I understand they had a cpl.
I remember they played Tempting Time cuz it was
of my favs back then...
I do remember the drummer as well as AAL as a band I would go keep seeing...For a loooong time...
Friggin Amazing band.
And Matt's just next level.
Perfect fit.
The guy is just astoundingly good. I have to giggle every time I see his videos. Wow!
22:29 and 24:28, love the insane blast beats with the feet between the hands, creating 32nd notes. Unreal how clean it is at that tempo.
I'm not the biggest AAL fan, but watching Matt play is just awesome. That drum kit sounds absolutely fucking unreal as well
Ain't gonna lie, he's been killing it on the drums for the past decade or so and is by far my favorite drummer from this era.
1:10:08 is one of my favorite fills of all time. So damn clean.
Oh OK! I know now😮 I’ll never miss another Animals tour👈🏿
I really want to see Red Miso live!
I guarantee you 90% of the fans in the crowd have no idea what a talent Matt is. I know they respect and love the sounds and rhythms he creates but he is on another level and makes it look so easy. The coordination and precision is insane! Although I was happy to hear some guys scream out that they love Matt at the intro of a song haha
I’ve been a drummer for over 20 years and I’ve been consistently blown away by his ability since I heard of him about 8-10 years ago.
Low blow man. Those fans wouldn’t be there if they didn’t know the band was talented..
@TeflonTwan I don't mean that ad a low blow to the band at all. I mean his talent is so high up there, I just hope they know he's very rare and it's an honor to watch a band like them live. Guess I didn't word that very well. My bad. Much respect to Animals As Leaders. They are all phenomenal artists.
I think that people that are into this kind of music are most likely musicians themselves, or at least artists of some sort, so I think they are hip to the level of musicianship and hard work all of the members have put into their respective instruments. But, I think the spirit of your post is true in the sense that Matt (as well as the other members) is beyond amazing and most of what Matt is doing is beyond the full understanding of most people (including most musicians) because he is that advanced and has put that much thought into each song and drum part, etc... Hopefully that made sense. I am just grateful to see so many people appreciating this kind of music. I have spent a lot of time feeling disheartened at the attention and accolades that certain pop musicians get for churning out awful one-dimensional songs, so to see a band like this getting the attention they deserve and to see how respectful and thoughtful all of the comments have been for their videos has given me some faith in humanity. Also, just wanted to add, that sometimes Matt makes it look easy, but other times he makes it look super hard because you can see him putting every ounce of energy and focus into keeping it from spiraling out of control, which I appreciate. I can see that he spends a lot of time riding that fine line between being in control and stretching his limit for growth. Super impressed by this band and this drummer. He makes me want to quit and practice more at the same time.
@kevinkohlbrenner591 Perfectly said! Didn't think I'd offend people with what I said but others took it the wrong way. You get it.
50:41 I LOVE YOU MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATT
59:12 The synchronization and precision of Javier's headbanging with Matt's cymbal bashing and cracking backbeat is insane.
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!
