I'm no drummer, but it's really interesting to watch this :)
Cool, what instrument do you play Lukasz?
I'm a guitarist although I have much interest in making whole compositions (2 guitars, bass, drums) for a band I play with. In the future I hope I can find time for other instruments, too.
That's something I hope to delve into in the near future, writing my own music, all the best to that Lukasz!
just like you said, this really help me create composition.
me 3
It's a shame you have so few views and subs, you're a great teacher/drummer
Hahaha thanks, if everybody watching this feels like you, I'll get there soon :)
Thanks Jeff!
Wei Lung Wong the amount of drummer that are "on this level" (this matt gartska stuff is hard) and also watch UA-cam tutorials isn't very high I would imagine. But I love your videos dude keep it up!
you're one of the best youtube drum teacher, easy to learn your lesson & please keep doing this kind of lesson, can you please do a drum lesson on Plini- Electric sunrise, Intro, riff and main groove after your holidays are over.
no idea how you don't have like 25,000 atleast subscribers by now man. you're vids are honestly so helpful
Let's hope you are witnessing the beginnings of what I hope will make a great channel, thanks so much for that!
omg i don't know how you don't have more subscribers. YOU ARE INCREDIBLE!
I suppose my channel is just at the beginning stages of its growth and thanks for your big compliment!
Wei Lung Wong your tutorials are amazing! Can you do a video breaking down how you would listen to an animals as leaders song and break it down onto paper?
I believe one other person also made the same request and that'll make for an awesome lesson, but you'll have to be patient as I'm going off on a long holiday next month. Glad you like my tutorials :)
Awesome, thanks for taking our suggestions!
Wei Lung Wong How was the Holidays? Man i Just subscribed. This exercises had helped me a lot with my drumming overall, independence and dynamics are being developed better! Although I'm definitely not ready to cover Animal's. Keep teaching man you are great and very funny.
This is seriously underrated content.
Thanks, really appreciate your kindness!
I’m loving how a lot of this stuff revolves around 4/4. You get your 3/4, /6/8 and the likes but all the cool shit is done with 4/4 really.
Dude you need more subscribers. This was a great great great lesson.
+Mike McLaren Drumming I have some more subs now I believe hahaha, anyway thanks for thinking that Mike!

2:30 sounds cooooooool
:) Do try it out!
Looking for creative 4/4? Go listen to any Meshuggah song.
TRUE THAT, Meshuggah are awesome!
Wei Lung Wong You're an amazing drummer dude! It would be really cool if you could do a video explaining the outro of Lethargica by meshuggah.
Oh that, I will if there are enough people wanting that. Although that is creative 4/4 :)
I'm sure they're also the inspiration for at least Inner Assassin's time signature.
Wei Lung Wong please do some meshuggah. Any would do but anything off of the latest album would be great.
Man that's amazing work. Thank you!
awesome again
Thanks Matt!
man your execution of this is amazing and SPOT ON. all the props and thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate the use of that nerve track in between the demonstrations too. aha. regards
Jojo Mayer and NERVE for the win, it's my pleasure sharing this knowledge :)
Killin' page, man! Just found this stuff for the first time, but it's edited very well & organized efficiently. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Alex, you're a sick guitarist, you keep up the good work too!
Awesome tthanks a lot !
Appreciate it!!
Damn such good music when you talk !
So good that you know and like Nerve
And aslo Jojo too
Have you done videos about Nerve's songs ?
I love nerve and Jojo, they were my influences before all these prog stuff, I haven't done any videos about Nerve though, hmmm should I? And thanks for watching my videos Justin!
Wei Lung Wong I would love videos about Jojo's drumming in Nerve, but I don't know if everyone would like it, as they do with your Matt Garstka videos
But that would be really interesting !
Thanks for your very good videos
Really great video dude ! Solid explanations, you're way of breaking down the pattern is super clear, I just subscribed and can't wait to watch the others vids !!!
It's my pleasure to share these Paul :)
You need waaayyyy more subs my brother.
Thank you Avizo, welcome to my channel bro!
i gotta admit i picked it as 4/4 pretty quick, maybe im a bit too deep into the prog scene at the moment haha, also loving the Nerve playing in the background, Jojo for president!!
hell yea right on man. i was doin shit like this for hrs yesterday
this is the best that ever happend to me
Man you are cool, i enjoyed your vid :D very fun exercises
Thanks Wojciech!!
awesome video man, thanks for sharing!!!
Dude, good stuff. Thanks for the transc and the video. Keep it up :)
I'm no drummer but I've been watching your AAL to understand more their rhythm and enjoy their music better.
My main issue is the fact that I can't recognise the patterns and I get confused and lost.
I hope this stuff is helping you then Elie!
Not only do they play a 4/4 is this song that sound assymetric, but the breakdown section somehow grooves like a 4/4, but is actually in 5/4. I still can't quite wrap my brain around it, but according to Matt's drum transcriptions, it is the case.
AHH yes it's in 5/4 but its natural to hear it in 4/4 as quintuplets because of what the drums plays. I might do a video on that if enough people want to see it.
damn this breakdown is on point, nice work man
wow!!!! cool!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!
Sounds like a tool song when slowed down!
the first guitar riff is actually played by Javier!
Oh crap I didn't know but now it makes sense because Tosin plays the melody over it right, thanks MightyChen!
love it
Awesome work, amazing breakdown, very easy to follow. Subscribed and glad to have found you just now :)
andrew halcomb Thank you Andrew!
I really loved The way to learn this awesome groove. I like this video :D
My pleasure to help Axel!
Great !
Great video man. Have you thought about doing breakdowns of Tigran Hamasyan songs? "The Grid" and "Out of the Grid" would be perfect for this since they also utilize the same concepts of irregular note groupings within 4/4.
Oh I've never heard of Tigran Hamasyan, but now I'm curious
What a fantastic lesson, and I'm not even a drummer! New sub here
Thank you Gonzalo, what instrument do you play and welcome to my channel :)
I play guitar and bass, and I'm really into percusive guitar playing. Thanks, and hope to see more awesome content from you!
this may be a silly request, but I'd love a video on proper hand and foot techniques!
+Amrit Mehta It's not a silly request Amrit, I'll do a proper one in the future :)
holy shit just found this channel. AMAZING VIDEOS DUDE!
Thanks Jones!
This is great man! Subscribed!
Thanks for the sub Michael!
I'm suddenly getting a Golden Eye vibe..
sick video dudeeeeeeee, sub'd
James bond? thanks for the sub Kyle!
niiiice!
I really like the way u clearly explain the groove in detail....but from where do u get the drumless tracks?
I created them, thanks Reshma!
kewl
Couldnt this also be called 8/8...? Amazing video by the way, this is cool watching you share your expertise and skill.
Sure, you can it whatever you want haha, 4/4 is just the most common, thanks for your compliments!
Hello! Thank you for the great material and the way you put such a complicated stuff to make it look really simple. I wanted also ask you to check the links to the playalongs. There's something wrong with it. I can't seem to download it... Would be really grateful!
Oh hey the website host was down yesterday, but I just checked and they're back up, hope it helps and I appreciate your kind comments :)
🏆
sweet!
More AAL please... ;)
Definitely Musicman! I love them to bits
Great video man! I really would like to know which program(s) you use to create the slowed-down, seperate guitar tracks !! :)
Yannick ohh I use a free bass plugin in Ableton Live Suite, it sounds a little more like the guitar after I put some distortion effects
3:32-3:42 that sounds like a tool riff with Gavin Harrison on drums
Haha I agree!
Hey does anybody have the transcription tired using the link but it didn't work? Awesome vid btw
Oh it's a super old link, I think it's dead. I'll consolidate all my old videos and links in a week. Check back if you still want the transcription, thanks for your kind words by the way!
dude you're fucking awesome
Excellent. Where do you get the drumless tracks from?
For This video, I made it with software instruments, thanks Charlie!
Could u maybe teach the brain dance grove? Just the one at the beginning
Oh and maybe the groove around the 1:20 mark?
+Drummin Blue Sure, stay tuned
cool! thankyou so much your stuff is amazing
hey man how do you break down these animals songs without the drums? how do you remove them to play over it
Yo, I didn't remove anything, the song starts with the guitar riff so I just took that and copy and pasted it for the practice playalongs. The rest when the drums come in, I played along with the track.
So cool man. What program do you use for transcribing?
Finale Songwriter. There are other free transcription software out there but I need the flexibility of different time signatures and groupings especially for the stuff that I do, and I'm not sure if those free software allows for that. And I hope your practicing is going great Jonas!
Cool! Im currently using Logic Pros notation tools, but it sure is tricky to figure out more complicated notation methods.. Maybe i´ll try FS!
Thanks, maybe ill upload a video to show you the result when I'm happy with it ;) Looking forward to more videos!
Jonas Verlo ohh I'm using a PC, so can't use logic but always wanted to try, heard it's smooth. Anyways let me know when you have a video up :)
Whats that snare? I love it!
Oh it's a SAKAE Celestial 13" x 6.5"snare
Following the 5+5+6 example: "Use it wisely"
What is this, a superpower?
(yes, it is)
Hahaha, actually isn't drumming a superpower?
It really is. The 5+5+6 example stuck out to me because Joe Arrington of A Lot Like Birds just released a video demonstrating the same concept for on of their songs.
You might find some good material if you check out ALLB (songs like Connector, Orange Time Machines Care, and Truly Random Code). He likes to move polyrhythms around the kit and play odd note groupings - which seems like your bread and butter lol
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely check it out. Oh it happens to be my bread and butter because so much of the music I'm listening to contains drumming like this :)
What's the name of the band/song in the background?
"Schluuedersitz" - Nerve. Jojo Mayer is the drummer on it!
how do you not have like 5 mil subs?
Thanks Peter :) Maybe I will when Progressive becomes the new mainstream.
Wei Lung Wong we can dream lol
Before anyone shits on me for this, I adore both bands
But did anyone just hear a Tool bassline in the first exercise?
Some others did too, check the comments :)
how did this pattern take u one year to practice if "the madness of many" hasnt been out for that long?
btw im not hating. iwas just curious
I think you must have been mistaken, nowhere did I say I took a year to practice this particular pattern. I did take approximately 1 month though to get it clean enough to be recorded :)
