Colour Mixing Tips | Suffolk Beach Huts

- Lovely Southwold beach huts from the dunes in the golden hour light. A demonstration of colour mixing and tonal values, with lots of tips & techniques. A tricky paint as the light changed quickly as it was around sunset time. I wanted to keep the huts fresh and colourful as they can be tight cubes otherwise! I hope you enjoy it. Thanks to husband Nick for his filming and input.

Thank you very much, Clare
thanks so much for taking the time to share with us while your painting and explaining that is exhausting! But it allows others to grow who do paint.😊
Yes it is exhausting and then the editing of the video of course! It pleases me that it helps other artists👩🏻🎨😊
One of my favorites. Your explanations regarding shadow was so illuminating. It was the best explanation I’ve ever had. Mr B closeups of what you are looking at really helped. Wonderful! Thank you I always learn so much.
Glad it was helpful Eugenia! I will pass your comment to Mr B😊
I know this very spot very well and how challenging it is to capture the essence of the huts and those lovely grasses. You made it look so easy and the end result is fantastic , especially when there were some noisy distractions! Thank you so much for sharing this.
It’s a fab place isn’t it! Was tricky with changing light and children! Fun though glad you enjoyed it 😊💙
This is such a lovely setting hearing the waves lashing and the children having so much fun and watching you paint. It was just what I needed after a very stressful time. The painting and the composition is gorgeous. Thank you for posting
Thank you! Glad it was a joy for you ! 😊👩🏻🎨📽
Clare, I truly enjoyed watching this paint! Quite instructive, and I loved the paint mixing portion. Your descriptions of what you are doing teach without it being too labored. You and Nick have such a great interaction too, which makes you two very relatable. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Michael and for your very kind comment!📽👩🏻🎨❤️
another nice painting well done, love the beach huts. best wishes Ken Christine xxx
Thank you for your continuing viewing 😊♥️
Love so much to see your videos , this one was no exception! Your own style of painting and the whole process you explain so well is fabulous! I am a big fan of your paintings Clare! Thank you so much to you and Mr. B ! Take care!
Thank you Cristina for your very kind comment! ❤️👩🏻🎨📽
Thanks again Clare.. always so fun to watch
You are very welcome Marie! 😍
Wow! That seemed challenging but you really captured the scene. Houses are so cute! It's a very pretty painting!
Thank you Lynette, a hard paint but worthwhile! 👩🏻🎨🎨💕
Your videos are so enjoyable to watch, and of course, informative.
Glad you like them Sue, thank you!📽❤️
Well done Clare , at last an artist who explains the mixing process , invaluable imo , I live in Frinton-On-Sea down the road a bit from where you are here , so I paint out in Frinton and also anywhere along the river between Flatford and Dedham , we’re trust members and if you are you can park safely all day for free at Flatford , keep up the good work 👍👍
Thank you for your kind comments Retired Painter! Pleased you find the videos helpful! 📽🎨👏
Wonderful video at the beach ‼️
Thank you Susan! 💜💙♥️
Just brilliant Clare. I am learning so much from you. You make everything look so delicious
Thank you Susan! Very pleased it is helpful and thank you for your support! 😍📽👩🏻🎨
Love your painting Clare!
You are very kind thank you Joanna!😊♥️🎨
I love watching you paint This is the 3rd time I've watched this one. My paintings are so tight, I worry to much about perfection. I need to loosen up and just have fun. I'm looking forward to your workshop in September.
Oh bless you Patty! I’ve found watching a demo more than once does help it to go in and make a difference. I can’t wait to meet in September I’m sure we can work on looseness 👍🎨😊
Loved watching that. Your colour mixing was so helpful too. Many thanks.
Glad it was helpful Jessica! 👩🏻🎨🎨❤️
Brilliant narrative paints a picture as much as the brushes. Here in Sydney, Australia beaches have obligatory seagulls paid to swoop, glide, gather and pose for artists.
Thank you for your kind words! I know seagulls here need educating! 😀
Love your longer real time videos. I learn so much listening to you explain your process as you go along.
Glad you like them and it is helpful! 📽🎨😊
Love this subject. Love your interesting process! Thank you💕😀
Thank you Debbie! Greetings to you in Spain! 💕👩🏻🎨
Brilliant! Thanks for taking the time and attention to detail when narrating as you paint! Makes me want to grab my gear and head outside! But its winter here in Canada, going to have to pretend to Plein Air for a few months LOL. Keep up the great work you two!
Thank you Valerie, I’m so glad it inspires! Let’s hope you can get outside soon. Best wishes & happy painting for this year! C & Mr B
Love your videos. I learn so much
Glad you like them Syl! And they are helpful! 📽👩🏻🎨❤️
Thank you. I so enjoyed this tutorial.
Thank you Jane! 📽😊💛🛖
Hi Clare. Apart from your skill, I really love your impressionist way of painting, I really like your simplicity and your ever-present smile. Please say hello to your videomaker husband.
From little Capri, an affectionate greeting
ps, one day maybe I would like to show you some of my paintings, but I am so ashamed.
Thanks so much Alessandro 😊It makes me happy you like my work and smile! I have passed your hello to Nick and best wishes to you in Capri- a beautiful part of the world.
P.s Do keep painting, it's the practise that really helps.
These videos of yours are absolute gold, love the interaction with hubby too, amazing to hear your thought process so thoroughly, and see the pallete evolve along with the wonderful painting…thank you so much, you are rapidily becoming my favorite on here !
Hi Anthea, that’s so nice to hear, wohoo! I’m pleased you enjoy the videos. Thank you very much, best wishes Clare 👩🎨🎨
Sunday morning, I've just opened UA-cam. What a surprise, it's Clare Bowen with another video. Whoopi whoo. I'll have to come back to it later when I can give it my full attention x.
Hi Richard I love Woopi Woo!! Made me smile, I hope you enjoyed it 💫💛
Love your hat.
Thank you kindly! ♥️
Marvellous painting as always with a lovely commentary on Color mixing and superb videography ! Thank you!
very kind of you to comment, thank you! ♥️😊
Thanks again Clare and Nick. Enjoyed the video very much. The proces, your explantion and the conversation betreden both of you. Also the sounds on the beach and birds in the sky.
Thank you Jan, I also love the extras when out plein air painting - the birds, the beach sounds…but also having nick with me 😊💙
Thank you so much for your wonderful commentary, sharing what your doing and why, in addition to what you’re thinking about while you paint. It’s incredibly helpful.
You are so welcome BG! 😊🙏
Lovely hat, don't you just love beach paintings!
Yes I do Peter! Thank you re Hat! 👩🏻🎨😊
Thank you, once again. This was wonderful watching you construct your lovely beach hut painting. I particularly enjoy following your thought process and your mixing advice. Very helpful to see everything come together live. Well done to both you and Nick…
Hi Skass, really pleased my thinking out loud is helpful!! And doing it live. Best wishes Clare 😊
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Fen you are very welcome! 👩🏻🎨❤️
I have been wanting a pallet garage like yours. Thanks for the tip! Love your videos and your painting demonstrations. You are an excellent artist and teacher. Grateful!
Unfortunately the Palette garage people don't ship to the UK, don't even answer my email enquiries! Odd Lot!
Hi Marti, I think you can make it yourself. To me it looks like an angle section made of aluminium which you should get in any hardware store for a very small budget. Then you only need a piece of PVC pipe in the right size to shove it in for transport. Sorry my English is not so good. But I think thats all this pallette garage is made of. Does in no way justify the pricing and hastle. Happy painting to all of you 🎨
@@sabinemuller7834 I ordered a 16" pallete and can't wait. It is due tomorrow.
Hi Marti, I’m pleased you’ve ordered your palette garage they are very useful! As Anthony says they don’t ship to the UK at the moment. Hope you enjoy. Thanks for watching 👍🎨
I loved this paint out Clare! It was so simple yet beautiful. Thank you for showing how you mix the colors. Your teaching is really done well. Even the bees and the children playing added to the experience. 😍
I'm so glad, thank you Julie! ♥️😊
BRILLIANT painting, video, everything! You are such a beautiful team! Congratulations on your works! They delight my eyes and my soul.
Thank you so much Milu. Yes, we are a good team♥️📽🎨
Beautiful painting to wake up to, this Sunday-summer morning! Good commentary explaining your painting decisions. Great!
Thank you very much, Edith, pleased it was helpful! 🎨♥️😊
Thank you Clare for your wonderful videos! I'm a big fan of you and your artwork. And a shout out to Mr. B. as well! Question - when you mix from your pallete garage (I have one also) it tends to dirty the paint that is in the "garage". when and how do you clean it up or change it? I paint quite a bit of plein air and travel to the events and this kind of paint management can be tricky while on the road. I look forward to your reply. :)
Hi Marjorie nice to hear from you. Good question re the Palette Garage. At the beginning of each day I use a square ended palette knife to clean up the dirtied paint lifting the skin plus any muckies. I then add new paint on top if needed. To prolong the life of the paint I put it in the freezer at this stage if I’m not using the garage. I’ve passed on your hello to Mr B thank you 😊. Hope this info helps. Best wishes Clare
Well done Clare! these little beach huts are so pretty, you have done well with them. Very nice painting. Thanks also to your husband who zoomed in at the right time to better show us what you are explaining. Have a good week.
Oh I’m so pleased you like the huts and nicks filming, I’ll pass it onto him 🙏😊Thank you Jacqueline
Love your videos. Thank you!
Thanks for watching Sandy! ♥️😊
Hi Clare what a lovely painting, thanks for all of the tips and advice, I normally just mix one colour as I go along but mixing them all at the beginning is a great idea
Hi Jeff, I hope it might help!! Let me know how you get on. Best wishes, Clare
Great job Clare and well done to Nick for your patience and very good vidography. I enjoyed that. I have probably stood in that very spot at some time, I know it so well. Lots of very useful information with colour mixing. I feel inspired again after a miserable session yesterday.
Hi Richard - it is a fab spot, glad you know it too!! I’m sorry to hear your plein air didn’t go well. There are so many elements that can be a challenge. I’m working on ideas for Filipino to help plein air painters on my return to cornwall. Keep watching!! 🎨👩🎨🎥
I love that you explain what you are doing and why, especially painting plein air, is so different from being in side and many things to learn! This was a wonderful place with all the sounds of waves, gulls, children playing, just lovely! Really enjoyed watching you paint and listening to your thought process. Oh and forgot to say! Nice to see the man behind the lens! :)
Hello, I agree painting outside is different, with so many more challenges! I’m glad you enjoy the sights and sounds. And seeing Nick as well! 🌊🎥Thank you, best wishes Clare 🎨
Where did she say they were today? Thoroughly enjoying this demo.
Southwold,I think, Just around the corner from Walberswick, another interesting place for subject matter!
You are right Anthony Southwold beach huts!
Thank you Barbara! It’s in Southwold, Suffolk 😊
nice painting thanks so much. Don't need the slats showing looks so lovely without it. Just my opinion
Thank you for your comment Susie! 😊♥️
brilliant clare and nick! as all the others here before me have mentioned, this was really helpful in terms of color mixing, approach and even the brush selection! Might I inquire about your substrate? towards the end of the evening I noticed it was a bit textured. Do you prep the panel this way or was it a panel that you chose to re use? and either way, do you prefer to work on the textured surface as a general rule? so many plein air painters I am familiar with express the importance of a smooth surface, and I find that a bit curious. TIA for your insights!
Hi Janelle I use a 3mm MDF with 3 x layers of acrylic primer. Leaving the brush strokes from this so there’s a bit of texture. I like working on canvas too. Both give a very different result! 😊🎨
@@ClareBowenArtist ah that's really interesting, thanks for sharing even more of your process!
Ahh amazing you inspire me so much ..Have you painted on the Norfolk coast ?
Thanks Denise - so nice to know. I have briefly painted on the Norfolk coast in Well Next the Sea. It’s a great place!!
@@ClareBowenArtist it sure is ..there is a lovely scene with beach huts and grassy dunes at Old Hunstanton North Norfolk
It is a really nice tutorial. Very informative! I am wondering what kind of paints you use? May I ask the brand or brands? Thanks!
My colours are:
Titanium, warm white, Naples yellow light and regular, lemon yellow, cad yellow, scarlet lake, permanent rose, cerulean cobalt, kings blue deep, ultramarine, burnt Sienna, yellow ochre oxide, raw umber. Brands: winsor & newton, Michael Harding & Jacksons Art professional.I hope this is helpful! 🎨
@@ClareBowenArtist Thanks so much! it's really helpful!
Hello Clare. Every time I try to paint a dwelling structure, even if is just a little simple house, I encounter great difficulties. They just look infantile and lifeless. Any advise on this? I am going to follow this particular video to see if I can improve but I would love some advise. Thank you!!!
Hi Maria! You are doing the right thing now, keep watching the videos carefully and keep painting daily! 👩🏻🎨❤️😊
Hi Claire, loved the vid. I think if it were me I would have screamed at those kids. Good for you for not. What size is you Open Box M? I'm considering buying one but haven't figured out the right size yet. cheers
Clare, wonderful video. Would you list the colors on your palette? And why you have 4 sections of white, if they are all titanium.
@@lindamcmurray6917 I am guessing the white is purely down to quantity, given that is is usually the more used colour, when mixing!
Hi Bette, thanks it wasn’t easy!! My Open box m is an 11x14” I have other but it’s my favourite size. Good luck!
Hi Linda Anthony is right! 3 squirts of titanium white and one of warm white. Need a lot more than the colours.
My colours are:
Titanium, warm white, Naples yellow light and regular, lemon yellow, cad yellow, scarlet lake, permanent rose, cerulean cobalt, kings blue deep, ultramarine, burnt Sienna, yellow ochre oxide, raw umber hope this is helpful! 🎨
Correcto, thanks Anthony 😊👍🎨
Lovely painting of a very simple, and homely, to my way of thinking, subject. Beautifully rendered. The colors danced in a beachy way. You could tell you were having fun. My only criticism is that you are bashful at the end of the painting. You should have Mr. B hold the camera steady for 10 seconds or so on the painting so that we can see its beauty.
Thank you Christian for your lovely comment! Mr B is not a professional videographer, he does his best and I am grateful for the support he gives me. 📽📽📽😊
@@ClareBowenArtist He is an excellent videographer. Not a criticism of his work. I'd just like to see your completed painting to further enjoy it.
너무 멋진 당신!!
Thank you Yoon! 😊
