- Some paintings almost paint themselves but this one had lots of challenges -equipment, composition, environment, & skill! Wiping off and not getting it right but also working it through and trying not to panic is part of being a painter - see how I work through it all.
I'd love to hear how you deal with a difficult painting in the comments below. Or happy to answer questions too.
Don't forget to Like this video, subscribe to my Channel and share with your friends :-)
Thank you!
This is a full length plein air painting demonstration.

Thank you for sharing real challanges, and not making it look effortless.. I am learning a lot from watching you/
Thank you 🙏 painting isn’t effortless, so I’m glad this shows and helps😊
Hi Clare. I'm right there on your shoulder watching you, I'm with every brush stroke, great. Thanks too to the camera man doing a good job there.

Thank you very much CHB, yes definitely need a mic, I forgot it but will on the next one! 🙂
A great lesson in perseverance being rewarded. Just this evening, I had that panic attack moment when my light was lost, but still ended up alright. Thank you.for sharing some of real aspects of being an artist.

I enjoyed watching you use the red, yellow, blue--primary combinations--in almost everything. It was very helpful to me! Thanks!!! Love your nature, too--most pleasant!!!

Love your coastal paintings!
Thank you Jennifer! 😍
I really enjoy watching your process - and excellent seeing you adjust the waves when you weren’t happy with them. Love your work.
Thank you very much Amanda! (I can't bare it if something is wrong I have to wipe it off or paint over!) 🙂
Very good video. Mistakes are a part of the process. I liked that you made mistakes and corrected them.
Thank you Yolanda, agree mistakes are part of painting!
Thank you so much Clare. As always it is so wonderful that you share your process, including choices you make and why. Thank you ❤
Thank you Cassie! Pleased it is helpful! 👩🏻🎨❤️
Enjoyed your vid of painting in Cornwall. Love your style and skill. I took up oil painting when I retired from work and still find joy in it. Thank you for your generous and helpful comments and encouragement. I have 'subscribed' now so hope to follow you more. X Andrew, Essex/Suffolk border.
You are very welcome, Bob! Thank you for subscribing and keep painting!🎨♥️😊
So enjoyable to come along on these painterly adventures with you. Iearn so much. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Beth and that you find them all helpful! 👩🏻🎨🎨❤️
Great video. Nice move wiping out and restarting the ocean waves. Since you have a real cameraperson with a quality camera, I'm wondering if you can look into a way to have your voice not be overpowered by the ocean waves. Thanks for considering..
Thank you Brian! Sometimes wiping out is needed ☺️ It was one of our first videos together and we didn’t have a microphone. We do now and it’s so much better! thank you for your feedback, best wishes, Clare 🌊
Learning so much … just listening to you!! Thanks …jj
That's so good to hear Robert, really pleased you're learning :-)
Really loved this one Clare....the struggle with tide and light is real...you did a great job keeping up with the shifting light, reflections...sand...all of it. Is this painting the one that became a bigger one for you one woman show? Thanks for a such a great video ❤
Thanks Laura, loved this beach to paint so inspiring, I did do other works here. Best wishes Clare
Hi Clare thank your for explaining your process as you paint, love your style. Beautiful!
My pleasure 😊Alicia! Thank you!❤️
Absolutely marvelous! I always bring to big of a canvas outside. Now that I have watched your expertise I will try alot smaller. Thank you, I really enjoyed your video and look forward to seeing others.
Hi Darcy good idea, when I started outside I painted on a small board and small subject. Good luck! Let me know how it goes 🎨👩🎨
Really helpful. Thank you
Glad it was helpful Skass! 😊
Very nice 👏 👏 👏
Thanks Marc 😊
Thank You.
"Undeterminable" Great word for artist's ever changing colors. Really appreciate hearing all your thoughts and that you include your mind changes!! Is that a "Gessoboard" panel?
Hi Jill, so pleased my ‘out loud thinking’ is helpful! It’s an mdf board I put 3 coats of acrylic gesso on. Best, Clare
Well done, ma’am.
Thank you Bob :-)
I love watching your videos, thank you. I have watched the Plein Air supply list you posted which is great. Which colors (other than Naples yellow light and lemon yellow) are in the palette garage you take out? Thanks!
Glad you like them Linda!
My colours are:
Titanium white, Warm white, Naples Yellowlight and normal, Lemon Yellow, Cad Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Scarlet Red, Permanent Rose, Cerulean, Cobalt, Kings blue deep, Ultramarine, Burnt Sienna, Red Oxide Ochre, Raw Umber. I hope this helps :-)
Have you ever worked with Notans, prior to actually putting your sketchy composition on to your board and then having to erase it, because you were not happy with the arrangement?
I am also interested to know what your easel set- up is, and particularly your way of stacking your colours ready for use.
All very interesting stuff and a pleasure to watch.
Ps I have just found and watched your video covering your pocharde box, Great. However you didn't cover the issue about how you contain your paints within the box whilst you are actuall painting............?
Hi Anthony, I’m glad your finding my videos interesting! (I hope you’ve subscribed so you can see more!!😊) I used to always use a notan or under painting in tonal values. But it can effect the finished painting with the colours coming through. I used an open box m size 11x14”. And a palette garage for holding and transporting my paints, all from the US. Hope that answers your questions. Best, Clare
@@ClareBowenArtist Thanks for the reply Clare, I found your channel three days ago, and I am subscribed and Hooked. On the strength of your demo on the Mbox, I have ordered one this morning. My one wish is that I had found the M years ago! I didn't see anything on their website with regard to a 'paint palette 'garage'. perhaps I aught to look again. Love your work. Stay strong.
Regards
Anthony
Can. You please do a video about all your plain air supplies? Especially the easel
Hi Angela, thanks for your comment. I have done a video on my easel, it's called an Open Box M, have a look at my previous videos. I will definitely do one one my plein air equipment. Do subscribe if you haven't so you don't miss the video!
hi.. lovely to watch your picture emerge. Want to ask about the tripod, manfrotto be free carbon, I think, but no head, is that right? interested cos it appears v stable without ball head. can you say what kind of clip is attaching pochade to tripod? cheers, D.
Hi David You are right I took the head off as its lighter and less bulky. The only downside is you cant tilt the pochade. Here is the link from Amazon to show you which quick release plate I use. Best, Clare www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000KZCEYK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@ClareBowenArtist thank for info .. best wishes, D
Hello Claire, As a new subscriber to your channel,. I was wondering if you could talk about you slimline pouchard box as this lightweight design is very interesting. Where can one get a similar piece of equipment from?
Love the scenery. Where is this seascape?
Hi Paul, thank you very much for subscribing! I have already talked about my pochade box go back a few videos - it's called an Open Box M.
Thanks
No problem 😌
it appears as though your painting surface is quite slick? Claybord, other?
Hi Debra, it’s MDF wooden board. I paint 3 layers of acrylic gesso on top. it’s fairly smooth but I don’t sand it which would make it smoother. 😊
🙏🙏❤
Thank you Vanderlei
Would you show us the tube you had your paints in?
Hi Debra, I showed my Palette Garage on my video titled: 'PLEIN AIR Oil Painting DEMONSTRATION in Cornwall' (I posted about 5 weeks ago)
Right in the beginning I talked about it and how I use it.Hope this helps! Clare
Can I ask the size of canvas? Looks like square shape?
It is a 12 x 16 inch canvas. 😊
😃👍
🙏👍❤️
Muito bom
Obrigada :-)
Do you prime your boards/canvas with gesso or some other medium prior to starting? Thank You 😊
Hi there I use winsor and newton pro acrylic primer I find it v good!
