I’m going to have my students watch this; how you take a seemingly impossible plein air situation- bug swarm! Rapidly changing light! And come out with a beautiful painting, well it’s masterful!
What a brave lady you are - when you visit Australia flies are always a problem in the outback....we wear those silly hats and you can't see anything through the mesh....great painting under difficult conditions....I really enjoyed it! thank you
Just discovered your channel, love your paintings and instructions. I live in New England but your video encourages me to visit England, beautiful shoreline.
I had to run away, screaming with my mouth closed and flapping my arms at the Seven Sisters when the flies started to swarm. Makes me want to shower just thinking about it
Amazing you can paint this with the changing light in such a short period of time! Truly amazing! You have so much knowledge to impart and it is a joy to watch you and listen to your thought process. So very helpful and inspirational! You are so lucky to have such a supportive and helpful husband! Great filming and questions Nick! You two are a lovely couple, inspirational all around!
Clare this was terrific! I was on the edge of my seat … I couldn’t imagine how you were going to manage to finish before the light faded…but you did it and you did it beautifully! Bravo!
I came across your video by mistake. I am so glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am grateful to you for sharing It with us. I have subscribed and liked and look forward to seeing more of your videos. Thank you. Margo
I find it amazing how you Clare have the composure with the sun setting to take the time and explain to us your analysis of your view and approach. Meanwhile my hand grip is tightening as I feel the drama unfolding. 😂 Great job getting it done! I loved the warm light on the rocks, cool sand color. Very nice! OMG!! 😳 the flies are swarming
What a wonderful time painting en Plein air! I could feel the ants and flies, ahhhhhhgh! Your painting turned out great. I really like how you mix up the colors from your remembered experience of painting at sunset, very helpful for sure. Thank you so much.
Hello Nick n Clare, I'm assuming you travelled up from Cornwall to Dorset for the August Bank Holiday weekend. This is a really lovely spot in Dorset known locally as Durdle Door. It's a place I have visited many times over the years and surprisingly it has changed a lot, possibly due in part to erosion of the coastline in that region. The painting you have captured in this lovely scene is fraught with colours, from golden yellows reflecting the Sunlight, to variations in greens, although on this occasion the heatwave has burnt the grasses. However, true to your style of painting, you have created a really lovely piece of artwork. The colours of the sky against the dark green shadow in the foreground is also very serene and beautiful to see. The noise of the waves crashing into the shoreline was phenomenal and the beach was packed with the noises from the crowds also bring captured on video, adds to the harmony of the whole scene. Well done to for managing to put up with the flying ants and staying focused on the task in hand. Take care, enjoy your weekend. Patiently awaiting your next adventure.
Hello Paul, We are on a painting tour, been travelling for nearly 13 weeks over the summer. I've been wanting to paint Durdle Door in ages and picked one the of the busiest days of the year to do it!! But it was beautiful despite the flies. Glad you ahem had a chance to visit many times too. Best wishes, Clare
Funny - we were there a few years ago from Australia and I thought it had hardily changed at all from my childhood growing up in the UK, some 50 years ago now. Maybe that was in comparison to other changes like the awful things they've done at Lands End. The one thing I did notice was the pathway down to the beach you are painting. When I was a child, we used to go camping at Durdle Door a lot, but the only way to access it was by boat or abseiling. I think that's where my fear of heights came from - having to abseil that cliff. We mostly went to the beach on the other side though. That cliff was a killer to walk back up.
My goodness, what a gorgeous setting. I enjoyed watching the painting come to life and chasing the light Wow, those flies were just terrible! Thanks Claire and Mr. B.
You’re such an inspiration to me! Can you maybe list the equipment you’re using in this video (canvas, brushes, even backpack lol)? I love your work and that view! Beautiful place.
Hello, Thank you so much for your kind words (sorry for my slow reply) I did a video before we left for our summer tour, listing and showing all the equipment I take to paint with. I hope it might help you. With best wishes, Clare ua-cam.com/video/EzpQU_5U2ks/v-deo.html
Beautiful, love your videos. A fellow plein air painter in the US gave me wrist bands called “Cliganic” They are worn on the wrist and repels mosquitoes but might work against other bugs too.
Hello, just found your channel, this painting and the previous two are places I know well so I know what a great job you have done, you are an inspiration, Wills
The Dorset coast from Weymouth around to Swanage is magnificent. That evening, the sea was almost flat calm, just slightly rippled. Occasional camera pans of Portland Island, sequestered on the horizon.
I love your videos! They show what it’s really like. Others only video when everything is perfect. I always think I’m doing something wrong. You show realistic conditions bugs and fast changing value and color. Thank you
Hi Eugenia, I'm glad it sets you mind to rest as plein air painting is 'messy' with all that can and does happen! I will always show what it's really like, no gloss here!! :-) Happy painting, Best, Clare
I absolutely loved this video, Clare. Was nice to see how you adjusted colors, values, and shapes as the evening was progressing. Those flies must have driven you absolutely crazy. Not sure how you were able to keep going!! I just did my first plein-air painting (using a selfmade pochade/paint box in my backyard, just to make sure I had all the bits and pieces I needed etc etc). Still a lot to learn !! Anyway, great video !!
Hi Andy, Thank you for your kind words, I'm really pleased you liked it! That's so good to hear you have just started your first plein air paint, very wise to begin in your garden. Let me know how you get on with your next one. Best wishes, Clare
This is just beautiful- love how you anticipate the colors and really love the thickness of your paint application. Reminds me of my plein air in Melbourne Beach with TONS of sandflies - I had so many bites! Plein air is not for the faint of heart!
Hello Clare, what a beautiful place (apart from the flies)! It looks a bit like the cliffs of Etretat with this pierced rock. I really like the gradient of your sky and the colors of the sea as well as the reflections of the rock in the water. Very good idea from Nick to paint this place at different times of the year. Have a nice week.
Hello Jacqueline, you are right, I love Monet's pantings of Etretat and that was part of my inspiration of wanting to paint Durdle Door. Really appreciate all the things you like about the painting. Thank you and you have a good week too! :-) Best wishes, Clare
Thank you for sharing your painting process. I love your work. Gorgeous paintings! I do have a more mundane question. How do you deal with the loo situation when you paint outdoors? Much appreciated any input you might have. 😅
Thank you Tai! Going to the loo whilst out painting can be tricky! I do limit the water I drink whilst painting. I have a pee behind a bush if needed! & I always know where the public looks are! ☺️
Clare, I have been .looking at your easel set up and notice you have your dispensed paint paint tucked up against the top of the easel on a strip of what looks like plastic. When you are finished painting do you remove it and seal it up in something to keep it from drying out? I have only seen this setup in British UA-cam demos and wonder if there is something designed to hold dispensed paint and ,if so, what is it called?! OR, is this part of a certain kind of pochade box. Would be very handy!
Hi Emily it’s called a Palette Garage from the US website great art tools. It’s for carrying and storing paint and especially useful for plein air! Mines a 14”😊🎨
I’m going to have my students watch this; how you take a seemingly impossible plein air situation- bug swarm! Rapidly changing light! And come out with a beautiful painting, well it’s masterful!
Ah thanks Mary it was a tough paint!! So glad you think it will be useful to your students. Sending best wishes,Clare 🩷
Oh wow, beautiful and so brave to stay with those bugs. I would have freaked out and left!
You are very kind Joanne thank you! ❤️
The push and pull of plein air. Chasing the light chasing the values. Brilliant team and painting.
Thank you Doug! I appreciate your understanding! 🎨♥️😊
Hi Clare I think that I would have packed up and gone home what with all those flying ants around, but what a lovely painting
Thanks so much Jeff! It was difficult at times! 😊♥️
What a brave lady you are - when you visit Australia flies are always a problem in the outback....we wear those silly hats and you can't see anything through the mesh....great painting under difficult conditions....I really enjoyed it! thank you
Thank you Ron! Indeed it was stuff of bad dreams! Pleased you enjoyed📽😍
Great info that “the tonal value you start with is important”. I never really thought of that.
Thanks Eugenia - it sets the tonal key, I'm glad it was helpful!
Just discovered your channel, love your paintings and instructions. I live in New England but your video encourages me to visit England, beautiful shoreline.

Thank you, it was not pleasant…….👩🏻🎨🙏
Clare this was terrific! I was on the edge of my seat … I couldn’t imagine how you were going to manage to finish before the light faded…but you did it and you did it beautifully! Bravo!
Hi Cheri, it was close as I finished and we walked up in back to the car in the dark! Glad you enjoyed it, thank you :-) Clare

This is wonderful - the idea of premixing to be ready for sunset - brilliant
Thank you Chris! Yes, it helps to premix at times! 👩🏻🎨🎨

Yes indeed! it is beautiful, thank you😊
Great painting and great video! Thank you, I would not have been able to tolerate the flies!
It was a real challenge!! Thanks ☺️

Hi Clare, the first color you mention is cerulean, but to me it looks darker than cerulean .
Dear Miguel, I assure you it is cerulean, maybe the camera angle confuses. 🎨😊
@@ClareBowenArtist Thank you Clare. Just double checking.🙂

It wasn’t pleasant but hey ho! 😊
What is that tube like holder that contains your paints? Thanks. Vera Scott Toronto
Are your Windsor Newton "Artist" grade or "Student" Grade Oil Paints?
All artist grade apart from yellow ochre. I prefer the consistency on the student grade.
What is your paint box name? Thank you
I assume you are referring to the tube of paints Darla! It’s called a Palette Garage from Great Art Tools, an American company!🎨❤️

Not close while I worked only when we walked down! 😊
