Awesome video man, I've been a jazz drummer for years and was the big band and a combo drummer for my uni. The best part of jazz for me is groove, just the ability to fall into the music and let it take over is what brought me to it. Also, your setup fills for caravan were sick
Legit, anyone else see the Al Yankovich look-alike in the video????? Dude perm the hair add some glasses.......Next Halloween costume??? ohhh lol
Although rob zombie was there too soo
I was waiting for an O.M.G. at the end, ngl.
Heeeeey, 20%!? Not 22%? 🤘🏻😎
Jazz drumming on the most metal sounding kit is just the funniest sounding thing
Right haha dry ass snare with reverb and pingy dry ride. Sounds so weird lol
Sounded phenomenal on that smooth jazz though! haha
Turns it to gospel. lmao
The snare was what made me laugh. Sounds so out of place
Even funnier if it was the 90s Hardcore snare!
It’s hysterical watching him play jazz with that huge kit.
What about Weckl tho lmao
Billy Cobham.
Big enough?
Jazz drummers were using monster kits back when metal drummers still only had two toms.
Those big ol jazz sets from back in the day were meant to accompany big bands and they were still setup for minimal body movement. Jazz musicians that played in cramped clubs had tiny coctail kits. Those clubs got raided all the time and they had to be able to dip out the back door with their gear.
@@redrick8900 Indeed. Louis Bellson comes immediately to mind as a prime example.
Jazz is not a joke. It is too subtle, nuanced and requires a massive amount of skill and hard work to just be bad at it. I dont even dream of trying it seriously. I think you did pretty well.
Yea jazz is a genre not a joke
Hmm Its a genre of music and with all due respect you can be a beginner and do jazz music, if you can do the basic ride pattern then you can do a lot of songs already
@@user-pg2bt6mg7m yeah, but it’s debatable if you can do them WELL. Not saying it’s impossible or not worth trying, but it definitely takes time to play it tastefully
@@user-pg2bt6mg7m Sure, but anyone worth playing with won't want to play with you.
@@ShartimusPrime Why are you here lol
Let’s appreciate for a second that he went for traditional grip on everything he could and he didn’t even call attention to it in any way
Traditional grip is ass. Jazz drummers barely ever use it. It's a crutch for a weak left hand that drastically limits maneuverability.
@@redrick8900 That’s wrong. Traditional grip takes away power and manoeuvrability to a certain extend, but let’s you play with more feel. I personally like and use it, but I can definitely understand why you wouldn’t use
@@doncorleole2356 No. Traditional grip is more powerful. I've played both styles. I know. So does Stewart Copeland. Go see what he has to say about it.
"let’s you play with more feel."
I couldn't imagine something more insipid to say.
@@redrick8900 Nah bruv you can literally be more precise which is great for ghost note feel. Also you seem to be contradicting yer first statement regarding a lack of left hand power
@@redrick8900 “I’ve played both styles I know” translates to I tried it for a short time didn’t like it and stopped.
Nice double kick fill on Caravan! I've never heard it quite so heavy.
I have to agree with you there Glenn and co. Really heavy fill for a jazz song.
Fuck you glenn
They call it DJazz. Stolen from Rob Scallon
Gregg Bissonette played drums on Maynard Ferguson’s Live From San Francisco record. Cool double bass in that one for sure.
Hi Glenn
Dude I could listen to you groove all day 😩💦
Holy crap! It's Zack!
Now you have to do metal songs that he suggests
Hello there.
You need to turn Samus on to those c h o p s
🔥🔥🔥
Double kick on caravan is actually quite nice 🎉
Absolutely agree. He stuck it in there so tastefully. [SEX]
You'd be surprised how much a double pedal fits with jazz, you just got to feel it out.
After all, Jazz was the first genre to include double bass@@kinghobbescastleco.3075
When the saxophone went "audio blocked by Sony/Columbia" I felt that
at 9:38 that fucking double kick might just be the best thing i have ever heard
That fill goes SO well with the song :))
That fill is insane isn't it haha!!
Imagine seeing a jazzband with this drumkit on stage...
Buddy rich used a kit like this, not as nice as Samus’s but an 8 piece
P A N Z E R B A L L E T
@@yeetfeet1878 No he didn't lmao.
Have a look at Viola Smith’s setups. It was jazzers who invented double kick rigs, long before metal was even thought of.
@Jesus Christ oh you don’t believe me well let me educate you
Samus, I've been watching you on and off for about ten years now. You really remind me of my last drummer who suddenly passed away from cancer. Your energy, your lightheartedness, your devotion to your craft. Thank you.
FUCK CANCER
I had to listen to that Caravan rendition 4 times in a row. Bro.. that improved double kick fill was {Chefs Kiss}, perfect. It just works.
thank you dude!!
Came here to say exactly that. I never would have thought a double kick fill would ever work in a jazz song, yet here we are.
8:00 I never knew I wanted to hear double kick on Cherokee so badly, but now I have! I really liked your takes on Strausbourg and Caravan! There’s a lot metal drummers can learn from jazz players, and vice versa :)
then you could do a colab :B perfect opportunity
have you listened leprous? the drummer has a playtrough really interesting, also I dont know much about jazz but its amazing and I love it
Aaand math rock was born. Look up Forrest Rice. Antidepressants sold separately.
AMEN!
definitely, i always love hearing a sick jazz groove during a break down, like in slaughter to prevail demolisher. 100% during the chorus is a nice jazz groove.

"Hey, I've been playing Metal for years, ever heard of Meshuggah, Fletcher?"

Thats nothing to be embarrassed about…i think you singlehandedly created a new music genre…”full metal jazzet”👍🏼 and it’s FIRE!
haha thank you Tony
You're definitely a metal dude, but your treatment of these tunes was fun and impressive and you are a quality player through and through. Everybody should routinely play outside of their comfort zone.
All he's missing is a cigarette, some indoor shades, and a beret and he'll be the best speed jazz drummer around

Estepario Siberiano in a nutshell!
And a tiny bit of blood in his heroinstream
Art Blakey is just so laid back that it sounds like he's not playing a normal triplet swing, but he's just *that* swingin'.
A 'good' swing is never an exact triplet.☝️
Amen!!
1st and 4th fivelet partials. Thank me later.
60-40 swing is such a vibe
Metal musicians do not want to admit it, but deep inside we all are scared of having to play jazz. Silence, low distortion and slow beats where everybody hears our mistakes. So probs that you tackled that, i wouldn't even dare to try! :D
Yeah, when I got asked to play with an orchestra (because they needed a drummer and the only drummer available between the age of 13-21 was me apparently lmao) I was super afraid because I knew I would be asked to play jazz and blues stuff. Thankfuly I got around playing that stuff, but it took a while to get used to controlling my power and feel to fit in those songs.
The greatest piece of advice that I ever got was not to limit yourself to one playing style. A good drummer knows how to play multiple styles of music. And a lot of great jazz sticking patterns, rolls and fills can easily be implemented into metal. A lot of metal/djent drummers are inspired by jazz aswell
@@yesdude3914 I started out playing jazz
@@yesdude3914 Very true. One of my favorite reaction channels is of a jazz drummer reacting to metal music. Good stuff. He was pretty blown away by quite a few drummers, like Blake Richardson (Between the Buried and Me) who uses a lot of jazz inspired drumming.
It goes both ways man. Jazz drummers also don't want to try gravity blasts while double kicking 32'nds at 240 bpm either cause it will show their mistakes.
This guy is like a cross between Dave Grohl and Weird Al.
You are 100% correct! That’s exactly who he looks like. What’s strange is his voice kind of reminds me of Grohl’s as well.
And Jesus of course.
@@franknogradi LOL!
I IMMEDIATELY thought of Weird Al.
But figured he's probably tired of hearing the comparison like Chad Smith and Will Farrell.
Also a squirrel on caffine
HIGH-larious seeing and hearing jazz on that humongous kit... And I have to say this. Caravan was impressive. That ride was clicking like a metronome. Great work.
thank you Steve!!
The ultimate test for a drummer. Syncopated rhythms, crazy time signatures, skirting on the off beats and needing to really "feel" the groove.
You did well my man, especially for someone who didn't receive years of instruction from a jazz specialist. The drummer in my highschool band received years of instruction on jazz and even as a teen the guy was amazing. The fact you can play like you did with only a few minutes of practice is crazy!
Impressive as always my man
I am a big jazz fan, and I've been around long enough to have seen live performances by many of the top jazz artists, and therefore seen many of the top jazz drummers. (I happen to think that the top metal drummers are generally quite talented with very sophisticated chops). You are clearly a very talented drummer. I admire that you put a lot of effort into trying to play jazz, and you did not fail. However, this is a good example of how difficult it is for even a talented musician to move from one genre to another on any instrument. Given enough time and study, I don't doubt that you could do very well in any genre of music. You seem to have a nice personality and are funny as well. Very enjoyable. Best regards.
Phenomenonal drummer. Jazz style comes with practice and feel. Much like Lars trying to find the down beat.
Agreed. Ive been a metal and jazz fan for decades, and a drummer...☝ hes got IT. Id actually really like to see 66Samus do an entire set with a 3 or 4 piece jazz group. Alex Skolnik did a jazz album, very cool stuff.
@@pawz007 alex's jazz is okay... i love his metal guitar work though, still some of the most creative riffs i've heard in metal
Totally agree generally ‘metal’ drummers have solid enough chops to physically play in the jazz idiom particularly anything with a straight 16th feel. Sometimes it’d be better for such a musician to forget the ‘jazz’ pedagogy or the more academic authentic style thing if they’re wanting to check out what jazz is all about.
Technically, the link between all jazz music is simply the improvisation thing. So even a heavy metal feel can absolutely be played as jazz. It’s often about being in the moment and intermingling with the band in real time. ‘Letting go or playing how one feels its often said.
If a drummer does happen to really want to get more into jazz and play with others who happen to be more into the straight ahead jazz realm, then of course breaking down the language deeper is going to naturally a thing one wants to do. A legit swing feel is something that can be more tricky to just jump into though, depending on what one has listened to exclusively.
Its been my experience, often drummers with roots in metal can be a lot of fun to ‘jam’ with and explore their voices navigating the kit with their current chops as is.
Which we certainly heard happen in this video. It’d have been cool if he had the opportunity to play with some tight fusion players or Afro-Cuban players and get the full ‘in the moment’ experience. Because that interaction is almost exclusively the ‘why’ of Jazz. Fun stuff

Anytime we step out of our comfort zone and commit to learning something new we are enhancing ourselves, we don’t always have to be great at what we try, it’s enough that we’ve been willing or brave enough to stretch ourselves. If we add something to our repertoire along the way then that’s a bonus.
Thanks for heading out into uncharted waters and giving jazz a go, love you too!
Except trying to play nikki minaj
@@unknownaccount8411 learn some pop song writing, my song writing got a million times better after I started listening to rap and pop. Some of the song structures in those songs are incredible, way better than 99% of metal bands.
This is coming from an absolute metal nerd who listens to grindcore and car bomb
@@mson925 I doubt that any sane person has to learn anything about songwriting from specifically nicki minaj
Great job Samus. Im a lifelong Jazz fiend and i can honestly say youve got some decent chops in that swing. The blast beats over the jazz tune sounded surprisingly amazing
I'm new here but this guy gives me the vibe of the Weird Al of metal drumming. Supremely talented, likes to mess around, is okay with a joke at his own expense and has a great sense of humour. Just a perfect combination.
That's the straightest "jazz" I've ever heard.
Yeah... “jazz drumming”
As opposed to gay jazz
@@JGuier im not the biggest jazz fan, but jazz drumming is the peak of drumming technique.
@@betobolt9212 Well, it's the peak of drumming techniques primarily used in jazz. There are dozens of different drum techniques and some are utilized/focused on more in different genres. Metal has just as many techniques that are just as difficult to master as jazz.

First discovered you when I listened to abigail williams like 14 years ago. Loved how you played but now I ALSO love just you. Such a relaxed, humble and funny guy.
Thank you for going outside your comfort zone to try something different and show us how you were able to tackle these challenges. I’m in my late 40’s and have just started learning how to play the drums after mainly tinkering around with the guitar for the last 20 years. Something I wanted to dive into. To me, you are an amazing artist, and your cred goes up even higher for trying to take on the road less traveled regardless if you think it might have made you look off your game. Much respect.
Good job. I think the hardest part of moving from Metal to Jazz is the feel. Metal is so on top of the beat and Jazz has an unusual back beat, not as hard as funk, but that was my biggest challenge. it's also hard to hear jazz being played on a metal kit. But you did a great job, thanks for the video!
Can we all appreciate how weird jazz sounds on his kit ?!😂💙
Lorenzo Palozza because it's triggered
It sounds great to me! I'd love to have those toms and cymbals for a jazz show
@@disdehcet I was gonna say it is very full sounding. I actually like it
I think a big part of it is the mixing. If you mixed those sounds in a way that fattened them out more it 'd sound better. But yeah I realise he's a drummer not a mix engineer.
But then there’s players like Vince Colaiuta or Paul Wertico. Ya know what I’m sayin.
Any time you step outside your comfort zone and attempt a totally different style of music, it shows you are a musician and not just a drummer. Very good job and I love your sense of humor and humility. Outstanding!!
I’m a jazz fan, so I’m really glad to see you expand your horizons. It’s fun music!
Well done. I think as others have said you’re obviously a good musician and a good listener so you’ve picked up the style as best you can and have made it your own. Two things that stood out to me,
1. the snare fulfills a different role in Jazz, its used to embellish and decorate the ride pattern, you’re used to the snare part needing to be played clearly and powerfully to fulfill a time keeping role which means your touch is far too heavy and lacking in any dynamics.
2. The ride/hi hat is where the ‘groove’ is.
The way a rock drummer is focused on playing the kick and snare very accurately and evenly is the same way a jazz drummer is focused on making the ride and hi hat sit nicely together dynamically and as you referred to in your vid how heavy the swing is I.e.
A jazz drummer attempting to play metal would struggle to lose the varied dynamics in their kick and snare parts, would struggle to make the ride/hi hat sit back in the mix and make the kick and snare focal point, would likely struggle to play metronome straight 16ths.
What do you think of hanging back slightly on snare, just behind the beat, even without adding dynamics?
Going out of your comfort zone is arguably the best way to grow as a musician.
Dude I’m not even a drummer but I watch all of your videos all the way through. I’m a huge fan of both music and comedy and your channel brings both. Keep it up brother. ❤️
thank you so much Johnny!!
5:30 is an amazing breakdown between triplets and 16th notes. That’s amazing man… I never caught that in all my times playing those jazz standards back in high school

I would love to see you play some of the crazy things Larnell Lewis does on Snarky Puppy!
Me too!
THIS.
Totally!
Big thumbs up to you for going outside your comfort zone and adding to your personal musical vocabulary. Another drummer comes to mind, Danny Carey. He played jazz and other types of music for years before Tool existed, and of course added so many of those flavors together in interesting ways, not to mention Danny's studying with an Indian tabla master. That added something totally unique to his overall vocabulary too.
The best of luck to you on your journey as a musician, wherever it may take you. Cheers!!!!!
I love how you can hear he is a metal drummer at heart, even on caravan you can hear the exaggerated metal hits.
Jeez I didn’t know George Harrison was a heavy jazz drummer.
He really got experimental with his genre since The Beatles broke up!
Hahahaha
I think he kinda looks like Weird Al. 🤔😄
I don't see George Harrison
6:20 The curse of the missing cymbal hit 😉
That was awesome. Love the energy and willingness to share.
This was so cool! The triggers sounded awesome over the jazz tracks!
The difference between triplet and 16th swing is actually super key, the placement of the offbeat anywhere from straight 8ths to 16ths is absolutely critical to the groove you're setting and is one of your main concerns as a jazz drummer
Mission impossible : Play jazz with a TRIGGERED DRUM KIT
Are you following me A?
My highschool band teacher taught us jazz in Art Blakey's style, and the two things that he really emphasized were a strong 2+4 on the hat and a "tight" swing, essentially that subdivided 16th's that you explained it as. So, I learned to swing less by thinking about how it sub divides and more by how much you can 'push' the swung 8th without it sounding bad.
It was so cool to see you playing this stuff! Well done! Nice work! We love you, too! ❤
Honestly, it is fun to see how personally the style of metal in general sticks out through the pores (Latin expression), because musically I played extreme metal for many years and I began to experiment with other styles and I could not avoid adding to the other styles licks of metal, that's why When you love that style so much and enjoy it, getting out of your comfort zone leads you to improvise a lot and add more to your creativity.
i am apologies for the bad english. :D

I think you did a nice job. It's clear that there is a really deep level of swing and feel in jazz that isn't emphasized as much in metal playing. HOWEVER... your count, speed, and precision are absolutely ROCK SOLID. It's really interesting to hear someone at such a high level switch genres like this, and it shows how skill with an instrument is actually not a slider from beginner to expert, but more like a big field with beginner at the center and all different kinds of expertise extending in all different directions. I would love to see more videos where you attempt other kinds of genres. Taiko perhaps?

You did not do too bad for a metal guy! Just attempting this exercise made me appreciate you and your desire to see the other genres of music out there and what they contribute. Keep exploring and perhaps one day find a way to hybrid some of your discoveries with the genre you are proficient with and come up with a new sound! Cheers!

When you broaden your horizons you open a new world
@66samus Awesome stuff!! I love to see skilled artists reach outside their strongest niche, as there can be really excellent unique hybrid moments like you demonstrate throughout here! The only note I can think of is to just barely delay your left hand and you'll keep a little bit more of that groove feel at fast tempos in Cherokee and Caravan, and keep that strong connection you developed between the two paradigms. imho 😅
5:46 got me the “shakedown 1979...” vibe
Awww man, music's music, and you're as musical as they come. Loved hearing the metal approach to jazz, very very cool sounding. (Mostly a jazz-head myself, so this was super refreshing).
Bro you did pretty damn well for being outside of your comfort zone. Well played for a wee jazz bahee.
I just found this. Awesomeness, dude. I'm glad I got to see this. Thank you, sir.
I love watching these types of videos bc you can really see a style that is almost polar opposite fit right in. And I say down with the purists on both sides! I could see Caravan as an actual metal song, just with jazz drumming! Good on you for going there and having fun too. May you progress and avoid stagnancy.
Ditto on metal Caravan. Come to think of it, there may be hundreds of jazz tunes that might sound amazing as metal or metal hybrid. I imagine metal (ish) versions of Night In Tunisia, Giant Steps, Spain…
That’s nice dude, I’d like you to check out Michel Camilo’s works too. Some really cool drums are going on there.

@@doh5artcrimeskrew Yes! The way Cliff Almond sets up the band at the very beginning is already impressive, and then it is just incredible all the way through. Perfect merging of testosterone and Latin jazz :)
I think Camilo's and Hiromi's music would translate better for him since they got rock ingluences in their drumming, tho some of Camilo's songs would be too "latin" for his "metal approach" imo

My grandfather used to be well known for playing Caravan as a drummer and that style was his groove on a Gretsch Slingerland kit. I still have that kit and learned a lot from him and I'm also learning from you. Here's to growth to making art.
You are not joking, the Rosanna shuffle still eats my lunch. Hate playing that one in front of anyone because it trips me up a lot. R.I.P. Jeff Porcaro your talent is still unrivaled.
A variation on the Purdie Shuffle, right? Similar to what Bonham did in Fool in the Rain.
@@victorwilburn8588 It’s actually a combo of both of those
It's three things Jeff actually emulated on the Rosanna drum beat: the Purdie shuffle, Bonzo's "Fool In the Rain" shuffle, and a Bo Diddley rhythm on the kick; take those three together, et vóila!
People think of me a classical musician, as I normally play symphonic music in large groups.
I'll surprise people when I say "lets go to this metal show" - and I'll get right in on the mosh pit.
I feel like this video is the inverse of that.
That makes me happy.
I feel you! I mostly play rock and Christian contemporary but I also joined jazz band my senior year of high school
I had a smile on my face through this whole video. Great playing and some truly funny shit! Thank you!!
I love you too man! You kept me in for the ending!
Im a drummer, a metal fan, and a jazz fan. Great video. The speed drumming and machine-like time keeping transfer over great to jazz...that beat to Caravan was sick. Did anybody else gasp when they heard him say Cherokee? :D
Also, as a fan of the genre, Art Blakey is probably one of the best starting points in jazz for a rock and roll fan. Check out Moanin', A Night in Tunisia, and Free for All.
didn't have the light touch that a jazzer has, but i was expecting this since he's a metal adept. metalheads don't play coffeeshops and small jazz stages, that's for sure lol. still hella talented, can tell that he just loves drumming.
Neil Pert made that transition. Just makes you an all round talent
I remember switching between playing rock at the Starwood, Rainbow or Roxy and then the next day at a club like the Baked Potato playing jazz. (I’m in my mid 60s). We had these jazz cheat-sheets that made it simpler if you basically knew the tune. In Jazz, there is a bit more nuance depending on the size of the venue, and the musicians you are playing with. You find yourself using brushes, batter and usually lighter sticks. Enjoyed both. Led to bigger and better things. Enjoyed this vid 🤘

@@rolllimbo973 yeah I don't watch it a lot. So what is it then? Derogatory term for non-metalheads?
@@Christopher-md7tf nah Samus is just weird and likes to use random made up words😂 he posted a picture with his wife and the caption was “5 years married to this bahee” so I think it’s just a meme now
