It's extremely cathartic to Zen out and play some very aggressive tunes while your body is paradoxically so chilled out. You have to be relaxed to play fast so it's this weird duality of emotions going on. Keeps ya pretty chill.

just a quick tip for everyone practicing double-pedal consistency:
practice those grooves from weaker (left) foot, and if you want drum sheet just use snare rudiments for two hands and play them with feet on kick drum instead, simple as that :)
PS: even if you're not playing metal and not interested in double-bass at all, such excercises will help a lot with stamina and brain to play hi hat on foot along one kick drum

When I was learning to play double bass - I used to do this thing I called 'The left foot/right foot drum off' - Start with a basic 4/4 groove - and each full measure, you swap between playing with the right foot and the left foot on the kick.
Then, start adding embellishments - might be some triplets, some 8th note grooves, then working up to some heel-toe stuff etc. The goal was to be able to play with my right foot to a point where I couldn't play with it with my left, then hold it there until I could.
