Another interesting thing with Ringo's playing is that he uses his shoulders while he's playing to help himself get into the groove, and one more (as described by the man himself) is that due to being a left-handed player using a right-handed kit he'll often lead using his left hand when playing fills and stuff. Definitely a reason why he's up there for being one of the greatest and most influential drummers of all time, the man definitely had a style all his own and it's great

Love playing ringo drum beats on my kit there so fun
as a left handed drummer on a right-handed kit I wished I knew earlier in life that Ringo also was left handed. I've always had issues with "normal" licks and fills since it's unnatural for me to lead with the right.
Steve the Mad Drummer has to be my favorite 😂❤ But also El Estepario is a damn genius on the kit! 🎉

Bobby Jarzombek is one of the guys who made me fall in love with drumming. Those old clips of him are actually still mindblowing. I'm glad he's getting some recognition!
Damon! His setup and technique is super unique and his drumming on the Don Caballero records is stunning.
Glad to see Yoni Madar here. He's got not only an incredible hand and finger technique, but also an otherworldly sense of groove and flow.
Wanja definetly deserves more recognition for his heal toe single stroke technique, and his hands are crazy quick swell

Yea, I feel like he's one of the very few whose hand & feet technique does not require triggers to maintain clarity & volume. Plus he can keep it up for like forever. I was psyched to see him land the gig with Keep of Kalessin. They're a damn good band \m/\m/
@@Guppusmaximus And you need to be a damn good drummer to play after Vyl. I was quite sad when they announced Vyl left the band. But I was relieved when I saw that Wanja was the one to replace him. Dude is a blasting monster with insane endurance!
Alex and Nick def don’t get enough love. Some of the OG drummers on UA-cam. I remember seeing Alex’s play through of “The sunset will never charm us” and seeing when Nick called his channel “blast beat shaman” in like 2007!!

Not the most unique of techniques but I think worth mentioning that Nicko McBrain of Iron Maiden not only plays barefoot as well, but does everything with a single kick. Even the more complicated patterns in some of Maiden's bigger epics

El Estipario Siberiano is a DRUM BEAST! I love his videos where he layers each limb and counts them to show you. SKill, passion, creativity, energy and panache all in one. His videos are some of the most entertaining drum videos out.
Idk, he never played in a band. No live concerts, just youtube videos. He's 25 years old. People are in bands when they're 15 yo.
He was the drummer of Saratoga for a couple of years. One of the biggest metal bands in Spain.
@@Adrian_kalHe played in the band Saratoga between between 2020-2023. If you're not too mentally challenged you might even be able to look up one of their live concerts with him behind the kit. You could end up having to face the fact that you're abit of a stupid fucking dumbass by doing so, but that's just a part of growing up. I sincerely hope you embrace this opportunity to mature as a person.

loved all of those, I have seen Zoltan live and he plays the drums like he is in a street fight with it, the amount of energy with each hit, my GAWD!
Also playing standing up: Dirk Felsenheimer (Bela B) from the German band Die Ärzte.
I especially dug El Estepario's recent jams of Hot for Teacher and Everybody Wants to Rule the World 🤘🤘
Honorable mention would be Aric Improta. That dude comes up with such cool stuff but he usually never does a full video on it, he basically keeps a little video journal on Instagram of his mind blowing ideas using sample pads and also weird acoustic effects. A lot of that gets reused for his songs with Night Verses if I am not mistaken. Definitely a must watch!
2:44 - This guy practices his rudiments (and has probably been doing so for decades at this point). He's experienced enough to know what the open roll "5 diddle" sounds like, then he switches over to the closed roll. It's definitely impressive, and hats off to him.
Check him out, he's good with polyrhythm too.
Siberiano is fuckin crazy, I've never gotten close to even understanding how the hell he does the stuff he does

So happy to see Daru Jones in this video. I saw him playing with Jack White back in January and he was one of the most entertaining drummers I’ve ever seen
Moe Tucker of the Velvet Underground predates the stand up playing style of the drummer of the Stray Cats. She was also unique because she turned her kick drum on it's side, playing it by hand from the top.

It is hard to replace Portnoy but replacing Mark Zonder is something else…

Mangini was the safe choice, and I heard he got the gig before the auditions, so it was kind of a „reality“ show, meaning it was not very real. Who knows. I was kinda annoyed that Thomas Lang got shafted, especially coming from Jordan who changes so many of the keyboard parts in older songs (ragtime in A change of seasons 🤨) to say that the audience expects things a certain way and any deviation is bad… considering also that Portnoy has said himself many times he improvises a lot on tour and changes fills just for the fun of it.
yeah, kinda sad. Though i trust him that he knows better as we do, as he said in an interview that he didn't think he was the best replacement. Mangini was the best replacement for DT according to him (and i can't disagree having seen Mangini a couple of times now live with DT, he is indeed awesome. And if you watch his videos here on YT, he's so humble and modest, just fun to watch). And Bobby said in the same interview that he was sure that Portnoy would come back to DT, one of the reasons he was so hesitant @@lalmene1965
Out of respect, I’m picking Sir Richard Starkey MBE… AKA RINGO, who just turned 83 years of age this past July 7! 🥁 I was in the seventh grade when they came to America to be on the Ed Sullivan Show… you never forget a thing like that, ever! ☮️💟☮️
I've actually never seen Louis Cole without a mask on. Also, there is no other band that sounds like Clown Core, between the drums and the sax, really fun band to watch live.
The sax player is also in Knower with Louis. He’s an absolute badass.

Don Caballero!! They have an album called 'For Respect' that is so great. One of my favorites in my collection.
I miss the OG Simon Philips here... His technic is so insane!
Honourable mention: Morgan Ågren, a fantastic drummer who can make a beat on ANYTHING.
Thanks for turning me onto these amazing fun drummers. My long-time favorite "different drummers" have been Bill Bruford and Gavin Harrison. Gavin has a video called "cymbal song", but he does fun and inventive things with songs in his band Porcupine Tree. Try a live version of "Hate Song". Pure drumming fun!
Interesting historical information of weird techiques:
Billy Cobham used in early 70's 4 sticks. Got the idea from some Jazz drummer.
Similar cool technique is "my" Both ends of stick" technique. I might have logically mutated it to simple version in 1982-1984 seeing Cobham.
I use it for "stick climbing" etc were i set my cymbals close enough to hit at the same time or alterneting with 2 cymbals or even toms etc.
Mike Mangini use that with one splash on old Annihilator video and in Dream Theater drum solos. Recently randomly also El Estepario Siberiano.
My Hybrid drumset allows almost all mutations of it and many completely musical. Examples are on my Official Ape Of Lapland Drums Percussion Artist channel. One 360 video shows the Stick Climbing/Both ends of stick technique really clearly.
One of my favorites Deen Castronovo used to play almost standing up. How he managed to play Double Bass drums so well is a wonder.
To many open hand drumming is new and weird and really recommended. Billy Cobham, Simon Philips, Mike Mangini, Gene Hoglan all benefited of using open hand. Ergonomically maybe healthy way. Fixed my posture slightly when a blister forced me to use left hand on Hi-Hat on about 1988. May have saved from back pains after over 40 years of playing and having the best reason to play drums"...like Mangini, Hoglan and 66Samus has...
I always thought standing up was the least strange part of Slim Jim's drumming. Look at that setup. And the open hand technique. The snare work. The closed hi-hat. And yet, it works perfectly for the Stray Cat's music.
I saw them in v early 80s and they took roof off. Really 'dangerous' too, the real deal.
Madar has crazy foot technique as well! Been following him for awhile and never ceases to blow my bahob. And also Nick Pierce I’m not sure is an official drummer for Unearth anymore? He’s in As I Lay Dying mainly now.
BelaB of the German Band „Die Ärzte“ also plays standing up. He once said in an interview, that for the trio it was a decision, that he could not be hidden behind the drums but be an equal member of the band. So he changed his drumming accordingly, perhaps you look them up. He has quite a surprising playstyle in my opinion.

I think it's a Drummer flex If you have to "climb" into your kit to play cause you have so much gear. Mike Portney was one of those over-the-top kit monsters. I think the kit was much smaller when he had to load in, setup, and load out himself.
The big kits come out after the drummers can afford a road crew and drum techs. lmao.
I unlocked some memories from when I stillI bought Modern Drummer mags. I remember seeing an article on Damon Che and being so weirded out by his setup and sticks, almost two decades later I finally see him play. Funny enough, I think that same magazine had Zach Hill and he could totally fit there.
I would not say that Jorge (Estepario) is really that odd in terms of his technique, he is just like the Avatar or drumming…He fits them all into whatever works the best. It is a level of developing such a technical discipline that it breaks into whatever flows the best. His work with Saratoga proves he is not just a showman or an overplayer, he is really aware in terms of the hows and whens of drumming.
Cole def gave me some Johnny Rabb vibes.

Don Caballero is badass. One of my favorite bands of all time. Super wacky timing changes. Ringo is so underrated. Dude was a pioneer. Rock solid.

Damon Che!!! For years I listened to Don Cab imagining he played this big slick drumkit. The drums on the albums sound amazing. Just to find out he plays an old Pearl Export with the snare and floor tom in the dirt!. Whatever reason he has to do that though it works!!
Tyler Coburn is the drummer from Yautja. Because he doesn’t have a double kick pedal, he splits his “double kick” line between his kick and floor tom. He’s also an absolute beastly drummer, with as much technicality as even Blake Richardson from BTBAM and Brann Dailor from Mastodon
Ben Koller from Converge did that before he bought a double kick pedal for the recording of Jane Doe
I'm a bass player who's been getting into drumming for my own demos. It's really great to know what's considered "unusual" as I've never had lessons, I'm very much just feeling it out. Appreciate videos like this!

Damon Che is a legend bro.. You need to check out some more of Don Cabellero's stuff. He has some very unique orchestrations. Plus he beats the living shit out of those skin's once he gets going.
The gravity blast using the drum key is just next level! He has elevated modern drumming with his style and pinpoint technique!
It trips me out that El Estepario puts that drum key on the snare just so he can gravity blast a cowbell. Anyhoo! Love the videos!
Glad to hear you give some props to Bobby beyond just the crashes behind him. I have been in awe of him since Ink Complete back over 26 years ago. He and his brother Ron are insanely gifted musicians.

Ringo had this weird habit in which every time he was hitting the snare drum and hi-hat at the same time, he'd hit the hi-hat harder than usual. It always sounded odd to me.
Ive actually met yoni madar at one of his drum seminars, the guy is insane and it was obvious he isnt normal.
I actually grabbed lunch with him and hr is a kind dude and a true professional, i know some of his freinds and they are all just batshit crazy with practice, its 24/7 drums practice and it shows.
As a fellow drummer, I must admit that was very entertaining. I smiled and laughed the whole time watching due to your comments during the segments.

Morgan Sansous from Henker might be something fun to watch as well. He has 2 bass drums, each with a twin pedal (so; 4 kick drum pedals). Sounds like a minigun when he blasts.

Daru Jones had to me my favorite though for real. And I can never get enough of the drummer at the wrong gig. He gives us all a reason to just keep playing. Cuz he's still doing it for the same reasons he started and that's important.

Bela B. from the german punkband Die Ärzte also plays the drums standing up. I think it's because it's more enganging with the audience, they are talking a lot and are entertaining in between the songs. It's definitely worth giving it a try.
as a lad in nineteeneightysomething i was taught to use a sweeping-like motion (nowhere near as pronounced as ringo's) on cymbals to mitigate some of the impact, lessening the possibility of damage. also, back in ringo's days, hihats were a tad thinner and therefore a bit sharper... you play a rock gig on those with linear vertical motion and after 2 songs your sticks look like a shark attacked them and your beard is full of wood chips.

No way!!! I saw this Bobby Jarzombek vidéo YEARS ago and was blown away. I’ve thought about and wanted to watch it again so many times in the years since but could never remember his name or find it. Thank you for including it in this and enabling me to finally watch it again. Heck yeah!!!

I knew who the no. 1 was without looking at other comments. Estepario is such a good drummer.
The drummer from Ragged Jack (local rockabilly band) also has a stand-up drummer. He also uses hit kick pedal to hit a skin on the underside of a tall tom instead of an actual bass drum.
In addition to all those technical metal bands, Bobby Jarzombek is also the drummer for country legend George Strait. His brother Ron is the guitarist for Watchtower as well.
Yoni uses gravity and inertia so effortlessly, it is mindblowing and impossible to replicate
How about reacting to the german punkband "Die Ärzte". The drummer "Bela B." doesn't really do such complicated stuff, but it's so entertaining to watch him paying standing up and singing at the same time :)
All great Drummers and a fun video. I grew up with the Beatles in their prime in the 60's and 70's. I was amazed to find out that Ringo was Left Handed but played a Right Handed Kit. Most Lefties I know, play a Right Handed Kit Open Handed like Billy Cobham, Carter Beauford and Eddie Bayers. But Ringo's Grandmother refused to let him be Left Handed, and made him play, write and eat right handed. I remember listening to some of his fills on songs like I Am The Walrus and Strawberry Fields Forever, and how the accent or emphasis sounded different. Now I realize he was leading with his Left and the accent was always emphasized with the left. He also commented that the sweep of the high hat was because he was playing with the non-dominate hand and playing faster tempos like in the video, for some reason was easier when he swept his hand on the high hat.
I'm so happy to see Bobby Jarzombek here. I have watched him A LOT and study his technique. He's an amazing drummer !

Buster Odeholm is pretty funky. 70% left hand set up for toms/cymbals, leads all his hands with his left, leads all of his kicks with his right foot.
Would've loved seeing Andrew Tkaczyk on this list(Drummer of The Ghost inside). Playing the drums again with just 1,5 leg basically. Very unique pedal made for him.
We all know the tragic accident that happened which caused him to lose his leg, jet the man didn't give up and developed a new way to play the drums (double bass) with 1,5 leg. It's amazing!

Zoltan is so great to watch. A few years ago my wife and I went to see Vince Neil at a small theater near our house. The show was so terrible that we were going to leave... That's when I noticed Zoltan. We stayed just to watch him! He was kicking cymbals (and drums), jumping off his throne, throwing sticks around... and keeping perfect time! If anyone has a chance to see him play I highly recommend it.

Thats literally the first thing I thought when I saw Lois Cole: "That's just like the dude from Clowncore who plays the snare with one hand and keys on the other"!
Another interesting thing about alex grind is his seat height. He sits so fucking high up, im guessing thats where his blocks come in to have more of a flat base on thise pedals
