Rock drummers make really easy rhythms look really difficult, and jazz drummers make really difficult rhythms look really easy.
I prefer a little bit metal... but this sentence.. it's true xD .. It's like Liszt(Metal side) vs Chopin(not really Jazz but still xD)
Danny Carey disagrees.
I played rock. And I so agree with u bro! This is true!
how bout Meshuggah - Bleed ? is that easy?
@@khalifaljibrang6028 Of course that isn't ROCK!
Both drummers are very good and have obviously have their chops, they both deserve respect.
They said metal and this guy was playing a weird version of hearts all gone by blink 182
Manuel Alcaraz true HAHAHAHA
Exactly haha
Manuel Alcaraz that’s what i was hearing I knew it was blink just didn’t know what song
The dude looks like a great value version of TB
AHAHAHHAH thats fuckin accurate
Whenever things boil down to a contest you know this was not put together by musicians but by advertisers and market research people.
Oh yeah, this is in extra bad taste for Gretsch, definitely expect better. In a classic marketing goof too, they get the genres wrong - should be fusion vs hardcore.
Scott Doyle
This, the “metal” drummer made this video hard to watch
Pretty sure they made it for fun. And it is fun
Jazz will never die!
It’ll just take up this certain smell
Take-away: Metal drummers are not a big part of Gretsch's customer base.
Christopher this fact doesn’t say something good about “metal drummers” 🤔
@@vjaceslavsjanens6966 Why? Because they tend not to play your favourite brand? ;)
DW and SJC are definitely the two most metal drummers go to from what I’ve seen
Jadon Chacon tama and pearl and Yamaha mainly
Aaron Gillespie uses them quite often
I grew up on metal, it got me into drumming. However, im going into Jazz as I enter my 30’s. It just lets me speak a different side to our language as drummers. And I really like the purity of the drum sound. The quality of sounds matter so much more because its not about energy. Each voice of the kit has can speak sentences in an arrangement, and it lets the drummers shine just as much as metal because in both genres they’re the driving force that can make or break a band.
“Metal” and “Gretsch” are 2 words that you usually don’t hear together
Beartooth
Underoath
Wow guys that sure is alot of solid examples
Joshua Overton Gar From early Megadeth days used gretsch.
I know that Linkin Park is more like rock/metal, but Rob Bourdon uses a Gretsch kit
You just can't take someone seriously when they say they're "metal" and wear that hat.
He is French
@eL nUb Precisely
OMG
OMG
Dude. It doesnt matter what you wear. You dont have to wear black and red all day. The metal is on your soul. Look past the clothes
They are both beautiful types of music, and you cant compare them.
All genres of music have great quality in their own way! Even though I'm a rock and classic/outlaw country fan, I really appreciate jazz and metal.
The impacts they've had on the music world that we know today cannot possibly be fathomed!
The best is when a good metal band has a jazz trainef drummer. Can't beat it.
1:43 territory by sepultura
Yeah, I was about to comment on that. Brazilian grooves are one of the best!!
this is the second time haha
in the video 1 the "metal" drummer has played it too
@@Haunyed exactlyyy...i was like...waaaaait ...noo way :D
I thought it was Machtkampf by Arch Enemy
there are metal heads who learn jazz so they can expand their knowledge and tools. this guy wasn't pure metal anyways. but... jazz ftw
Some insanely good metal drummers come from a jazz background, and it's a great combination.
@Mette B Shit take. Try again next time
@@yunarukami14 Not even close
Percussion is as much a visual art as it is an auditory one. Simply amazing both of you!
I heard no jazz.
I heard no metal.
Just a lot of chops, a fast latin and a really fast punk.
Mladen Dragovic Amen
Fast punk is metal...its known as thrash...smh
Latin is jazz...
@@donaldinglese1243 Exactly (if we speak about rythm)
Thats definitely jazz
I see a lot of negative comments here . Call it want you want. Both these guys a bad ass. PERIOD
Word.
I enjoyed both players staying true to their gift. Thank you
NOT QUITE MY TEMPO!
Hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha damn bro hahahahaha
you just made all the best coment ever
were u rushing or were u dragging
Shafiq H. Jazz and bebop is harder
Thank fucking christ.
The level of misinterpretation is amazing in this video.
Shawn Fernandes true but I also it ain't that deep
Shawn Fernandes ahahahahah true
True
In the grand scheme, it's on par. Why don't you post a solo vid then to correct any misinterpretations ?
@@DG-sf9ei I'm not a drummer, will not be able to do so. However, a lot of drummers and general proponents of either genre will gladly agree with the fact that these are infact very different from standard Jazz and Metal styles of drumming.
Love the more complexity of the jazz and the force and power of the metal.. the genre's over lap alot, when ite good musicianship and skill
What I find funny is that the origins of metal drumming are actually from jazz drummers themselves. Ian Paice from Deep Purple was a traditional jazz drummer and Fireball was arguably the first speed metal song (introducing the double bass). Bill Ward from one of metal's first band Black Sabbath was also a jazz drummer. Lastly, Sin after Sin and Stained Class from Judas Priest had jazz drummers who revolutionized the genre to greater heights by incorporating elements of progressive metal and the overall sound for what eventually be 80s metal
Yeah, Jazz was the birth of these rudiments and fast pace. I don't think there's much of any bands from 1970-1990 that don't have drummers with a jazz background. I would like to see more metal drummers play a little more intricate than fast, and nothing drives me more insane than hearing double kick mask crap fills.
That guy had almost no real technique.
@@johnludtke4416 Which guy?
I rofled every time the jazz player kicked in, he just dominated the metal guy. In my humble opinion of course
Because the metal guy isn't playing metal he's doing Travis barker
+Ben Mitchell thank you
+Extol Jesus Chris Turner woldd kickass!!
Thete is a clear bias in this from the makers of the video
This "metal drummer" is just a punk drummer with a double pedal. Look up Luke Holland and watch his song "Hos Down" with Jason Richardson.
1:00 travis barker, heart all gone blink182
Both drummers are amazing!
Gar Samuelson of Megadeth is my favorite drummer, a traditional Jazz drummer playing Thrash Metal
The guy playing metal drums was playing a Blink 182 song called Hearts all gone and it's pop punk TF 1:00
punk and metal drumming are pretty similar
Travis is actually a Jazz drummer.
David Bean that's ok, he looks like travis barker lol
lolz
i was about to call him out for the same thing lmao
anyone else really like that jazz kick drum?
Awesome, and really good quality recording
Oh you guys are incredible. Take a bow man! This video is goin in the save for later column
Amazing how the jazz drummer's single kick fluttering sounds almost as fast as the double kick!
Hey, I think we all can agree about the fact that all real good drummers are impressive in different ways - no matter genre. It's just about taste.
Tres bien! Love the double bass on the rocker and love the syncopation and triplets of the jazz drummer.
Skill!
Both fellows played beautifully - a good video.
Metal: How hard and fast can I play
Jazz: How much can I do with as little amount of drums possible
Connor Pixley incredible taste man!!!!best drummer on the earth!!!!
WHOABUBBAvideos then why did the Jazz guy have more drums? This metal guy was just pounding the drums, but not all metal players, play that way...
metaldrums neither
Metal: Basically what you said + cool fills, stick tricks, typically uses match grip, and constant tempo or common/simple tempo changes
Jazz: Weird and unnecessary left to right, up to down technique, doesn't matter if you dont like him but you must know who buddy Rich is, typically uses traditional grip (and will kill you if you use match grip) , and "how can I make the tempo as unfollowable as possible but still make it sound good to be music?"
(I am biased towards jazz)
Hehe fast metal drummer ? watch that :
ua-cam.com/video/R0wHLwMr2l8/v-deo.html
you cant compare two genres that are equally as awesome.
Both performed awesome
Love how the jazz drummer is so confident
The jazz guy killed it. Should have replaced the "metal" drummer with Alex Rudinger or Romain Goulon or some shit lol
Literally with every well known metal drummer xD
Joey jordison or Aaron Kitcher or jay Weinberg lol
GEORGE KOLLIAS
Because jazz is way harder. It requires so much more than just stamina and chops.
Kheishen Quah lmao.
at 1:00 Davy starts playing a slightly different version of Hearts All Gone by Blink-182.
Ya i noticed. I didnt see it coming, but i knew someone else had to notice
Good job, you really picked a fair match-up here. Totally equal in skill and knowledge of their genres.
Can't think of a thing. Both were good in their own right. I got teary eyed just by watching the two. I love this s**t
1:01 "Hearts All Gone"
nice catch
Searched through the comments just for this
Dude I thought the same thing
Metal will never die
This is why it’s important to be well rounded in all aspects of music & not just the music you love playing. Plus it makes you more marketable that way.
I like them both!
Always been a jazz player. I like how jazz explores the kit and not just the snare, hat, and double bass like that of rock. Grandpa always told me, "If you can't make it as a jazz player, you'll end up being a rock drummer."
I couldn't agree more haha, but there are very skilled drummers of all genres.
+JoeDotPHP What about Buddy Rich? He was mainly a snare player, was he not? Plus, he's considered the best drummer to ever have lived.
Buddy Rich explored the kit, trust me. Buddy played the snare as a solo instrument at incredible speeds. I'm referring to simply hitting the snare once every second like in most rock songs.
The bias in this comment is baffling. Not to mention rock rarely incorporates double bass... That's metal. Firstly some drummers prefer to enter a career of rock and metal as they are more interested in the musical genre. Secondly I'll have you aware that metal is highly skilled and technical in a different way. It's like saying a professional basketball player has significantly more skill than a footballer. They're an alternate set of skills.
Also your grandad didn't come up with that. Many ignorant people have already said it before.
+DDL I'm well aware of the skills required to play in either genre. Yes, maybe it sounded a bit biased and I apologize. I've played both genres aplenty. Honestly I think I've played rock more than anything. I just prefer jazz.
But don't you dare talk about my grandfather like that. I know he didn't make it up. He always said it as a joke and motivation for me to keep practicing.
1:50 - Sepultura 🤘🏻
Song?? Cavalera is a machine

I LOVE BOTH!
I listen and learn from both!
That's why you don't pigeon-hole yourself into a single genre, learn and take what you can from all styles. That's how you develop originality.
1:00 heart's all gone by blink-182
That’s my favorite black metal song
thanks jazz for existing
Guys it’s not a competition between drummers or drum schools.
It’s a marketing video dedicated to drums “Gretsch” that tells you “You can play jazz or even metal on our drums”. - both drum kits sounds amazing.
The idea is quite good because for ex “TAMA” drums is more preferred by Metal musicians and “Yamaha” more for jazz. So here all the stiles could be played.
I prefer jazz so much more, theres so much more rythm and dare i say swing to it
it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing
Stephen Barlow Exactly :)
i like both but jazz is harder
It really isn't both metal and jazz can be easy to learn what makes it hard is the dynamics
Eric Cartman
You haven't listened to much jazz if you say that. Jazz is about as diverse as Metal.
The Jazz is only hands technical and precision, metal is about using the double pedals, both are not that easy to play in my opinion
Slipix - League of Legends idk i think i think jazz is harder tbh
@@senorgarcia4071 me too
Each style has it's own beauty! To play super clean+heavy+fast strokes with stamina in punk/metal is very challenging, akin to the difficulty of the subtle dynamics+complexities+odd meters of jazz/fusion. Different languages, not better/worse. Very few (if any) drummers in the world can do both at a high level.
Both awesome
Like: JAZZ
Coment: METAL
Gotta give credit to those smooth-as-hell rimshots.
Both were great. Both didn't take it too seriously. Very funny stuff! 😂.
I do both genres. Jazz and rock. I love them both!
jazz plays with heart, metal plays with power
Nah metal's full of emotion
+DDL a very dull emotion!...
+Googoole TouYube It represent rage and I'll have you know that anger is just as much an emotion as any other. And before you state that it's stupid to be angry in music, it acts as a release and can heal layers of pain in the singer, songwriter or player, as well as in the consumer.
Your reason is valid... I agree that music is expression and not suppression of emotions. And since anger is an emotion, why not channel it through music right? But does it have to have the same field of expression every time anger is experienced? No. It can be different and need not be monotonous or limited in range of expressions... That’s where jazz has more story-telling to its work and more range in its style. I would say metal bands generally have the tendency to stick to the same sound and the younger generation are more likely to be tone-deaf from it... Apart from the digitally appealing sound, the only thing that is missing in metal music is story-telling or improvisation... Now when it comes to anger it’s not stupid to express it in music. I wouldn’t count it out. The way it is treated makes a difference. Either you eat anger alive or whole before it feeds on you one “beat” at a time!
Jazz drummers play with skill and theory, metal drummers play with extra chromosomes
fedora hat? no shirt? socks with slippers? that's so hardcore
I sense a neckbeard is present.
Bullshit at its finest
I can listen to a you 2 choppin and poppin all day!
Fun video!!!
The guy that's playing jazz is a beast as for the metal guy ehhh lol
Sweet video :)
Metal Guy Plays blink 182 heart's all gone??
I thought the same think !!! I think he does
Yo quiero ese sombrero! Buen video amigos
Dig that great Gretsch sound!
This was cool.....BOTH guy's are incredible
That "metal" drummer just felt like he was supposed to be a joke. He just kind of hit stuff as hard as possible with a bit of double pedal in the mix. Get Matt Greiner on the show or Luke Holland or Chris Turner! That Jazz drummer did have some nice chops though :)
He's definitely pro though.
I like both metal and jazz! Tony Williams was jazz with a bit of rock. Listen to his early works like Emergency, Turn It Over, and Ego. He was a badass.
i’m obsessed with both ngl
they are both great!! the difference is other have 3 audiences while the other dude have 30,000... if ya know what I mean
But those 3 have more money than the 30.000 combined 😂
1:00 blink 182 heart's all gone
And 0:25 is Davidian by Machine Head
You pick what to rehearse. If you love music, it works.
I played keys but as a musician a like both styles , I don't want to say one is better then the other one (all do I could pick one ) but because I love music in every high level of expression , as musician I love music , Baroque, romantic classical, modern music , jazz in all styles , Latin jazz , Brazilian music , pop music , Gospel music , you can make rich music almost in every genre , that's why a love both styles, both have a ported rich ideas to music. (All music as well )
Represents jazz... plays some metal licks...
that's because metal pretty much came from jazz... except with more double bass and less hand...
N617A what the fuck
Brax_tacks Metal has some jazz influence. Its just hard all they way.
Brax_tracks a lot of things came from jazz
I don't know if I would put metal in that small of a box as far as playing goes, but they do have similar influences from tons of genres (blues, african rhythms, baroque and classical theory, etc.)
Jazz Rules
I love this
Excellent talent. If I had to pick, it would be the sound of the bigger shells.

Regardless of the "style," there are levels. As an example, I'm guessing that any drummer can recognize the ridiculous amount of skill it requires to play something like this. (The first 30 seconds are "easy," the rest...not so much: ua-cam.com/video/4wvqffeJkoI/v-deo.html)
Metal drummer and not blast beats? This is the reason why you don't combine metal and gretsch
Bad ass drumming!!!
Two great drummers collaborating... This is by far THE top trickarooski that people fall for: the pre arranged faux battle. Politicians have been using this for
somehow i dont think its a coincidence that in every one of these videos the jazz drummer wins
2:14 Wait.... Is this an attempt at the france national anthem?
I thought that too
Both good drummers 👍👍🤟🤟
Agree with the comments of it not being the stated genre but they are both insane drummers regardless of the style of their sound.
not really metal drumming though
I hate to be "that guy" but I prefer the last "Jazz vs Metal" video you all did. In that one, it was very distinct in style; here it seemed just like a shed session. Sure to the trained ear you could hear the differences, but if I didn't know any better, to me it all just kind of seemed like heavy hitting and chopping out. By no means though I'm not saying they are bad drummers, I just don't see the "jazz" coming from the one guy and I know that can be a very broad statement. But I can only hope those who read might understand where I come from in saying that.
Like I said, hate to be that person, but the last first video did a lot better displaying the styles respectfully. Maybe it's times to cut back a little on the gospel chop videos guys.
Jazz v Metal I had great examples of Metal drumming, while Jazz v Metal II has great examples of Jazz drumming. And, you know what, both videos had 2 brilliant drummers. No need to determine who the best is between Jazz and Metal.
both are pro !!
0:43, when you realize you lost.
Hahahaha yeah
call kollias for the metal side and we will see! hahahah anyway great video
i think the same.
The whole studio will crumble to dust
