0:00 - Introduction
Remember the first time you heard "Enter Sandman" by Metallica?
Or maybe you've never heard the song at all.
It's one of the most popular metal tracks of all time, but those outside the metal or rock world might not recognize it.
The last time Larnell Lewis came out to Drumeo, we challenged him to write a drum part - on the spot - to a song he'd never heard before (click here to watch) and he blew everyone away.
This time, Larnell wanted to try a style he's not known for playing: metal!
If you want to see a fusion drummer try to play one of the most popular metal songs of all time, don't miss this video (you can skip to 9.33 if you just want to watch Larnell play).
01:08 - Active listening
When learning a song, he practices active listening, which includes looking for these things:
Song form: How many measures are in each section?
Tone: How does the song feel? Is it aggressive or calm?
Specifics: Any shots you should look out for?
Larnell takes an analytical approach and breaks down all the details, noticing patterns and themes and how the different instruments play off each other. Because of this, he can already hum the chorus' melody and drum part after only hearing the song once, and remembers most of the structure as well.
09:33 - Performance
While he's known for his great drumming skills, he also has excellent listening skills and a strong memory. Larnell knows what to prioritize when learning, so he's able to learn quickly. You can learn how to do it too!

Larnell: "That half time will get ya"
Me, not a musician, never played drums in my life: "He's right that half time will get ya, people don't realize that."
Such an underrateded comment! Sums up our culture today.
v.funny
Me, a musician and drummer... This comment made me laugh for real. That halftime will get ya.
what's funny, is halftime isn't anything difficult.
Believe it or not… that half time (more often than not) May regularly get you!
👏🤣
"I'm assuming it's 1, 2, 3, 4?".
Suddenly Larnell started to panic. That's not a time signature he's ever played before.
😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂
lmaooo
seriously tho, he wasnt talking about the time signature, right?
@@Gabrol What else would he be talking about?
I wish that Drumeo had Larnell do this song with their current format, with him listening to a drumless part and coming up with it himself.
Right?! That would have been interesting!! lol
Yes!
Here's to hoping he returns with a new song in the future
Yes was thinking exactly the same. This is the first video i've seen in this format so was a bit surprised at first
Yeah same, i'm like 'wait, he can hear the drums?'
I love how he recognizes that the half-beat would mess him up, so he adapted the lines with high-hat fills to not loose track while keepin the half beat on the crashes. It ended up harder to perform than the original line, but for his mind work, the extra notes ended up helping him keep on track. A nice improvise perfect for a first-time performance. A true Genius.
Normal people: "Can you turn up the music?"
Cool People: "I'll take more volume."
The phrasing really reminds me of the sort of language used by Fletcher in Whiplash. You can tell this guy comes from a background with formal, professional training.
@@TyrannosavageRekt quite entertaining watching him read/memorize the drum beat. 🤘🏼
My music teacher in elementary school was so stern. If we were watching a movie and asked her to turn the volume up she would stare at us menacingly until we said "louder" instead of "up" lol
@@stonedalldayjedi533 "Can you turn louder the music?"
@@JustinTheGrey lol close. More like "would you raise the volume louder"
"I'll take more volume"
That is the correct response when listening to Metallica.
Preach it brother!
Well said.
Fisticuffs
So true, excellent comment
If it's too loud, you're too old. :D
Absolutely incredible. My favorite moment: This incredibly nice, classy, clearly educationally-bent and probably classically-trained professional... 1/3 into Sandman is fighting back a snarl as only metal gives ya. Absolutely love it.
I scrolled down looking for the snarl comment, so good
The original performance by lars is burned into my memory so hearing Larnell, a modern drummer at the top of his field add his personal voice to this and crush it right of the bat brought a smile to my face.
He claims he’s not metal but then goes right ahead and says: “I’ll take more volume”. That’s a pretty metal way to say a pretty metal thing.
He had an epic headbang going on for a bit too. He's feeling it. :)
I agree lol
You gotta crank it with how the guitars over power a bit.
He isn't "metal " a whole lot of people "aren't ", I'm not,....don't let it "bother you so much ", all that should matter is that "you like it" ....."CONTINUE BANGIN' YOUR HEAD"
Hahaha
Not quite sure which is more unbelievable: His extraordinary talent OR the fact that he never heard of Enter Sandman.
I hadn't even heard of Enter Sandman until I was about 14, I guess it depends on the environment you're raised in, my parents were heavy reggae and RnB listeners so that's all I heard I was young.
He probably heard it before but did not really pay attention tk it or cared to ask what the song was.
Thats whats making the video
@@jasjrock6424 fucking yikes buddy

HE was able to take away the agressive playing, and still execute the song with high precision, that is remarkable, amazing, talent and technique together!!!!!!
I don’t know what’s more impressive, the fact he analyzed it so perfectly on the first listen or the fact he proceeded to play it perfectly on the first try.
Larnell, 9 hours into listening through Metallica's discography: "Still open hi-hats, okay."
lmfao right???

Cmon its lars lol

1:08 "Ill take more volume! ☝️🤓" Hahah i love this guy already he seems very nice
"little more volume ☝️☝️😏"
Incredible. I always assumed it took session drummers weeks to learn how to play for bands they're not a part of on tours. This guy has just shown how much on another level to ordinary (non musicians) they really are gifted.
Check out the "We like it Here" live album by Snarky Puppy, Larnell learned the entire set on a 7 hour flight to london.
Every now and then, the youtube algorythm randomly throws an absolute gem my way.

Same. I have no idea how this came across my front page but I ain't complaining!
Facts. I don't know how this ended up on my list... but I love it.

That's started to happen quite often for me.
"I'll take more volume" is the correct thing to say when listening to Metallica. He really is a natural

I’m a retired Military Fighter Pilots I’ve seen this ability from 1 maybe 2 guys I flew with. A true gift to visualize or hear and then replicate with muscle memory applying what his body knows. All while his mind is translating, processing and storing the information. This is truly one of the most fascinating things I’ve ever seen/heard.
It's like a dual process! Oh, first and foremost, thank you for your service my brother. While Serving with the 160th SOAR, we had this with some of our Pilots. Some guys had that amazing muscle memory duality that still amazed me even to this day. It's a different way to learn, proçess and deliver a result!
I'm a bit concerned.
Trying to play the drums while flying sounds dangerous. 🤔

It’s really beautiful getting an insight into these very talented musicians describing what they listen for in music and how they structure their understanding of a piece (and genre) of music when they’re meeting it for the first time.
Yep, "I'll take more volume" is indeed the correct reaction to hearing Enter: Sandman for the first time.

Seeing him hear this for the first time made me realise how much I take this song for granted. I’ll often skip it if it’s on because I’ve heard it so many times but this video brought back to me the simple but powerful beauty of that signature riff and the way the drums support the song so brilliantly. It was like hearing it for the first time with Larnell.

Watching someone who is so good at his craft dissect a tune like this is amazing. A man who is that technical walk through tune like enter sandman is awesome to watch. It was cool to see the transformation, he was very studied and near introspective in the beginning, he got a little more comfortable, loosened up and then the power of BLEEEGGGGGH compelled him to just let her rip. A lil surprised he didn't charge through the kit after. Also after seeing this I think his feet are so fast I don't know if he'd need a double pedal for blast beats. He had so much fun! So well done dude. Much Love Mr Lewis!
This was too easy for a musician this good. The more modern videos in this series that play the song without drums first is a great improvement to the series! That lets viewers to learn more about each drummer's style.

Important to understand, his ability to do this isn't just "Talent". It's the result of A LOT of training, education, and experience. He might struggle a bit with many of the songs from Rush ... or "they" might struggle with supplying the number of required drums and other "stick-based instruments". Its not just "having the drums/instruments" but also "positioning them in a manner so you dont have to twist completely to reach".

What I think when reading it: Let's find the mainstream song he can't play and break him! And if that doesn't work, let's move on to experimental stuff. But that's why I like your comment, the series would be great if it's not about the challenge but about the lessons learned.
