    I love watching these testing videos. You give so much information.
    What I like about these trials is that your honesty is based on your experiences from camping yourself. You set high standards and you hold companies to their word about their products.
    I value companies that respect a customer's observation of their product and are willing to correct the problems that are noticed.
    It has nothing to do with cost of redesigning a product. It has to do with customer safety and the reputation of a company to stand behind their claims that they are producing a safe item for the customer to use.
    It also means that whether you are an experienced camper or a novice, if you purchase an item based on the company's promise to be kept safe then it should stand up to that promise. That's what makes a great outdoors company: customer safety, quality products and open communication between customers and company.
    And you prove that every time.
    Thank you.

    Thanks Luke for looking out for us ! I completely agree with the fact that a leaking tent is completely useless and dangerous. I almost purchased this tent after watching your “first look “ video. I’m sure glad that I waited for your test video! Thanks again brother!

    I've been looking for a good double skin tipi tent, and was really excited to see the Ichi One. If DOD fix these issues, I would still buy one in a heartbeat. But only IF they do what's needed to realise the initial promise this tent showed.

    The sad part about all this is that the company doesn't test their own equipment and has to rely on the public ... meaning this company wants your money before anything else ... I bet all this would stop if they got sued a few times ...

    • @BoneFromTheDale
      @BoneFromTheDale Рік тому +5

      You can’t sue them over a bad product that leaks. No judge is gonna take a case like that seriously. Not to mention good luck finding a lawyer to represent that.

    • @smidgeonisms
      @smidgeonisms Рік тому +8

      Moral of the story then?: Never buy anything unless it is proven to have been tested (does not leak, collapse in strong winds etc..) by the company that makes the product they sell.
      Reputable manufacturers always test their product designs once made. Kampa, Vango, Coleman, Quechua and many others do this. By the way, suing will not work. Not buying their products is enough.

      Unfit for purpose is definitely a case for something being unfit for stated purpose. Does that make it unsafe? I mean.. 🤷🏻‍♂️ it definitely gets you wet and cold & that can lead to health outcomes. How you might phrase that though to get it pulled. A company that will ultimately rely on the ignorance of its buyers is a bad company.

    If a tent doesn’t come seam sealed I don’t expect it to be waterproof and won’t complain, if it leaks due to poor design such as with this tent (the entry flap) then that’s a different matter. When a company refuse to acknowledge their own poor design they no longer exist as an option for ANY of their products. If they can’t be trusted then neither can their wares.

    • @singledad1313
      @singledad1313 Рік тому

      I'm the same way. If it isn't seam sealed I don't consider it waterproof. That is the first thing I check when setting up a new tent. Are all the seams sealed? If not, I either return it or seal them myself.

    • @deediddy
      @deediddy Рік тому

      The company should know.
      If they say waterproof, that's what it should be.

    It won't be hard for DoD to trace this, just water test the tent in a rain room with lighting and a camera inside the tent. A 360 camera or a couple of wide angles will do it and they can SEE where the water is coming in.

Reason I bought it was because I can stand up in the middle inside the tent, and it is easy for me to put up by myself quickly with just the one pole. I own many other tents I also like and know don't leak but I am going to do some experimenting with it in my yard and maybe try seam sealing or something to hopefully make it more rain worthy. Hope it works.

    Luke I so enjoy your reviews and I want buy any gear without first watching you review it. So I know you don’t enjoy hammock camping but I have to hammock camp because of hip and back issues. I discovered what looks like a pretty great hammock system by superior gear. They have a built In under quilt into the hammock, and an easy (no knot skills required) Tarp with doors. I wish this hammock had existed when I first bought my Dutch Gear Chameleon hammock ( which is a great hammock) but having to buy a separate under quilt and Tarp made this an expensive purchase in total. I haven’t bought a tarp yet because I really struggle with all the knots that need to be used when putting up a tarp. What I liked about this Superior Gear tarp is that you don’t need to have Boy Scout knot badge to put it up. Would you be interested in testing these products?
    Also thank you and your families military service. I am a military brat myself and I know the great sacrifices you all make in severing, but you demonstrate your honorable service in every video you make.

I will be waiting to see if DOD pulls it, and if they will give any satisfaction to customers like me...especially like me since I haven't even had a chance to pitch it. I'm hoping for an exchange for the fixed model, I won't get a refund as it was an eBay purchase.

  • @alaskaraftconnection-alask3397

    Since I'm seeing this twice... I'll say it again as well:
    Interesting... I had a similar scenario occur when seeking dealership status regarding Silky (Japanese saws, tools etc) for here at Alaska Raft Connection (intent upon adding Silky Saws to our rental and retail gear selections for remote destination Alaska rafting trips). I received all the factory-direct wholesale, MAP, suggested MSRP, etc. and shipping pricing. Of significance... I also looked into Japan-based bulk dealerships that would sell Silky at quiet a bit lower pricing as factory (ie. knocking a significant amount off single to small orders as well as quantity orders, much less for shipping, and faster delivery). I inquired about my findings with Silky... They essentially said the very same things DOD has responded to you concerning your tent issue. The strange parallels is the talk of knock-offs or not legit sales. Could be the case of faux-branded stuff, but I see a very similar response trend. Might simply be case of different outsourcing or batches in Asia. As far as Silky goes... Did I go thru with dealership status? NO. Did I ever buy in quantity from any sources? also NO. I did obtain highest quality supply and models wanted/requested? Yes... but it was unfortunately not fair-minded by going with a factory direct relationship. Did I receive any faux-branded or factory seconds Silky saws and blades? No... all were top-notch genuine. Hope this lends some useful/helpful perspectives.

    Let’s let them respond to this first before busting out their windows. Pride and saving face would be easy …put a disclaimer with these as fair weather tents only till they redesign them to the waterproof rating needed. Being a stand up company and fixing this issue would get them lots of positive views. By making it right, they save face. If they respond poorly or not at all. Then..windows are fair game. Or heck with it and bust em out anyway. Lol

      MSR had problems with leaking tents until the problem became well known & people either returned them to get their money back or the public stopped buying MSR products en masse. Then they started seam taping their tents like they'd done for years.

    im a bit confused cos you already put this video up a few days ago so i watched it again because i thought you must of heard back from dod again after the second test and put this video up again so that people that didnt watch it new the story before you gave the response from dod ,but i guess you havent heard back yet? the only difference in the this video and the last that i can see is you edited it a bit. did you put the wrong video up by mistake? have you heard back from dod re the test you did on the tent that they sent you? ps hope you have a great week and looking forward to your next video. 🙂

    One very important thing to know about Japanese companies, and Japanese culture in general, is the concept of saving face. We in the European/American world don't have this concept. A Japanese person will NEVER publicly admit they made a mistake. I've worked with Japanese citizens for a Japanese company, and they would rather quit their job than admit they were wrong about something. To admit they made a mistake means losing face, and they will not do that. That's why DOD said you received a counterfeit or defective product even though they know you didn't and you showed the two tents were from the same lot. They're not going to respond truthfully, they will deflect and blame everyone but themselves, because to do otherwise is to lose face. If they do respond, expect them to gaslight you and blame you for not setting up the tent correctly, or some other mistake you made. Don't expect DOD to admit they made a poorly designed tent. This isn't about them being dishonest or a scam company, it's a cultural thing and you'd see this kind of behavior no matter what product a Japanese company is selling.
    EDIT: To clarify, I'm not supporting DOD. When I worked for that Japanese company, I was always frustrated when I found a problem. I wanted to fix it, but the Japanese citizens who would need to put in the work to fix the issue refused to acknowledge the issue even existed in the first place, forcing me to find other ways to address the problems when it would be far easier for them to just do their job and fix the issue. After complaining to my US manager, I was told to just accept that they aren't going to lose face and admit the problem existed, and instead find another way to solve the problem.
