I have a noise machine with 12 sounds.....its amazing, my condo faces a 4 lane road and it really cuts the road noise from the aftermarket D BAG exhaust systems so their Kia sounds like a racecar
Love your honesty! Wish we had more of that from other sources. That in itself makes your channel worth watching. Also you take the time to explain in detail what you're showing and what you're talking about, makes all the difference!
What they probably did was set up their own test before sending it to you. Which would explain everything that you were questioning. If they checked it to make sure it didn't leak before sending it i guess that you could classify it as QC. Which if you ask me is what they should do with EVERY product before selling anything. Just my thoughts.
Yes this is one of my favorite review channel for the products Luke does review. Reading the comments I really do hope that some of you do not make your decisions based on review from this channel only. Regardless of the brand, QC, there still is a chance something could go wrong. I am 100% sure if you search the internet for any issues from a product you are interested or that you are 100% happy with, you will for sure find someone with some level of issues. Just because there is 1 negetive review and I am a fan of that reviewer does not stop me from making a purchase. I just don't like reading comments when people say "I am never gonna gonna buy from that company!",
Agree 100% with you on the medium tent. When its hand picked any review is worthless. Really appreciate your HONESTY in informing us about that. Given this I would never purchase a product from DoD. I would also discontinue any offer from any company to test their products when they provide them for free or otherwise. It puts your credibility at risk.
Thanks for doing a comprehensive review on this product. Your honesty is refreshing. Its not a dig on the company but an unbiased review. It will help everyone in this community. I hope the company uses this as a way to improve on their product. Well done.
I fall asleep to the sound of rain every night. The sound of the rain hitting the tent is far better than many sleep videos i have tried to go to sleep to. Maybe that's a new channel for you. lol
You need some kitchen towel to put onto the wet floors and walls so that it shows if it's minor or major quickly and visually. Great testing again..thank you
I am actually planning on buying the large sized tent. The footprint is not a problem as we go out in mostly flat areas and it's light enough to distribute it across a number of people. Thank you for the review and your thoughts.
They must've tested the medium tent first to make SURE it wouldn't leak before they sent it to you. And they sent you the tent that was tested, rather than sending you a brand new, medium sized tent - with all the parts included - so you could test it right out of the box. But they did fix the problem and the tent (at least, that particular tent) doesn't leak!
That still presents a problem. How do you know if this fix is being done throughout the manufacturing of said tent. How do we know that this tent was the only one fixed and that they tested it themselves to make sure it didn't leak? This actually skews the results. This does present a problem. Quality control would randomly pick an item to test, regardless of when it was manufactured or how. Also they sent this tent incomplete with no tent stakes. Whether this tent leaked or not, the results have to be thrown out. They know that Luke will test this tent and that many would-be customers will be watching. That's my take anyways.
Exactly right. They could have tested and fixed any failings before sending it out. There is no way to know for sure from that tent if they’ve actually fixed the problem.
Thanks! DOD is dropping the ball. Respect immensely your opinion. I truly enjoy your channel, so very comforting and knowledgeable. You have great energy. 😊
To be fair, if they really hand-picked the medium tent for you, I guess they’d clean it up and make it “presentable”. My guess is that this is like a showroom or returned tent, and they simply didn’t want to give away another brandnew tent. But anyway, good on you for pointing it out.
In no way would I call this issue "fair" Clearly a deceptive practice. To think a company of this size wouldn't give away a tent to a reviewer who has almost 600,000 subscribers is just foolish. That's a ton of FREE advertising.
I wonder if the medium tent sent was one of their modified prototypes. Doubt they updated and mass produced already. It's probably used due to it being a first run and sent it for free testing. What's odd is that there are plenty of locales in Japan where they can do extreme weather testing. Anyways, I know you talked about wanting to visit Fuji, and that is a bucket list item, but make sure you two hit western and northern Japan. Places not visited much or talked about because they're not Tokyo or Yokohama.Prefectures like Akita and Aomori have historic castles and some awesome forests and mountains to camp at.
I just want to add something.... Just wanted to add a tips for any tipi tent users. There are adapters available that allows you to connect two poles (must be longer for obvious reasons) to make it a A-shape to eliminate center pole to maximize usable space. There are some 3rd party companies that makes it and some tent manufacturers make it for their own but tipi is a tipi, they all work.
I’m currently in the market for a 4-6 person (non-backpacking) tent for my daughter. I would NEVER buy a tent made primarily of mesh, no matter how effective the rain fly is. She wants to be in complete control of the ventilation. Crossed this tent off the list for possible purchase. Thanks for the review.
Luke you do and outstanding job testing everything. If I need any outdoor gear of any kind I come straight to your channel for a honest assessment of the product. Merry Christmas to you and family
I have the M. bought in Oct. been rained on 4 times. Has not leaked at all that I’ve noticed. I enjoy the tent it’s a great size and quality for the price. Just my $.02
Have you ever treated a tent with water proofing? I would set a new tent up in the yard on a hot sunny day and soak them with water and let them dry then spray Campdry on them and let them dry then put the fly on and do the same thing as I did on the tent and never had water come in. We camped with a couple that had the same tent as we did but was not treated and had a thunderstorm that night and the next day they had there bedding hanging out drying from the leaks where we didn't have any leaks. I still do it to this day.
Yep, exactly. Every new tent I've owned I've used Campdry on. Done exactly the way you described. Result? No issues. . And, I lived in a tent for 5 years when I managed a very rural campground, hit it with Campdry - once a year. No issues. I also made sure to really soak the taped seams to be 100% sure they didn't leak.
Luke always enjoy and respect your opinion and findings. Would really like to see you try the NatureHike 5-8 person winter camping teepee. It is one that I would like to purchase, but I am waiting for your assessment first. Thank you. Dave & The Girls
I think all the tents are great. Last time I was in a tent, it was a canvas pup tent, and it rained like that. We were soaked. We packed the car and left. This was in the middle 70s.😅
You went very easy on them considering how hard you go on some companies for very minor imperfections, especially considering this was their second bite at the cherry.
Shocked to see a new video on it. I was SO disheartened after buying the (first version) medium AND the dedicated ground sheet to find out it leaked. I shoved it in my closet and made the Tetra large the go to...but I WANT the DOD. Now that I know the problem area, I may have to look into seam sealing it.
Hiya! I really appreciate your reviews. Even the ten year old ones are still relevant imo. I see a lot of reviews on tents & sleep systems for various seasons, I live in Minnesota so that's relevant. Could you also discuss different packs to accommodate those different loads? Thanks! I wish you all a wanderful and warm winter. ☃️
I like the colors of both tents. I like the idea that you can stand up inside a tent, and change your clothes. I do think you made a great point about the height of the vents being a problem. Again, teepee tents have the same problem that most trail tents have, and that is that the damned pole is all the heck IN THE WAY. You find yourself bumping into it, trying to avoid it, hassled BY it, and everything else. Another thing is always the question: can you carry this tent in by putting it into a backpack? In other words, IS this a backpacking tent? Yes, or no. If not? Then it inherently competes with every big tent in the world that you could pack into a trunk of a car, and take CAR CAMPING. Now, get this. I like both backpacking and car camping. But if you ARE gonna car camp? Why not bring a big tent? Weight is no longer a big concern. Those tents are too heavy to backpack IN with, so yeah... they compete against all your other tent options out there.
I too don't think they were trying to scam anyone. Just clueless as to what testing often means and trying to cheap-out or as someone else mentioned,...it was a test prototype. That said,...as an older guy,..I'm not sure about the form factor. I could easily see myself or someone else tripping over all the tent lines in the dark. Secondly,...the sound. It's shape means you're literally sleeping inside a loudspeaker, lol. And the run-off. I've had tent run-off so severe around the bottom that it soaked underneath like a lot of you may have had. All of that said,...under the right setting, with a large group,...could be a fun product to have. Cheers. 👍
There's certainly concerns with the medium tent being used. I am cautiously optimistic now though, and would consider taking a punt on the Ichi One tents when I would not before. As always, Luke, I appreciate your hard work and transparency.
Ty for the tent update review, Luke. I unfortunately have to agree w/ you that most likely they hand picked that med size tent for you. Unavoidably it seems that is the cost of your fame. Like it or not, to the outdoor gear companies you are now on their radar, and if they get a complaint about their products and they feel they have to do this to skew a good result, then they probably are not a co. most should do business with anyway. Add to that the fact that the large tent leaked as well (Even WITH seam taping on it). This, to me, shows a lack of quality control Imo that can’t be ignored. The high vent on the large tent also shows a lack of logical problem solving when designing these tents as well. For me this co. is a hard pass. P.S. Maybe you might have to have Susie buy the tents for you or even better someone, such as a close friend to buy them, so as to not tip off companies like this as to what you are doing. Again this may have to be the cost of youtube fame for you and your family to get the honest results you and all of us watching wish to achieve.
Hey Luke, dank voor het delen ... eerlijke review !! wilde deze (M) ook kopen maar na deze review gaat het mooi niet door , zelfs niet voor een "Base"- Camp !! grtz. Janneman uit Nederland
Most tent companys wont take returns because it's to expensive, and I also noticed the water shed between the two tents the medium tent was probably set up and sprayed with water repellent. Sorry they wasted your time but it was a great review anyway. You can refur to that tent as FUNNY BUNNY hanse the logo.
Luke love your channel and how transparent you are in your reviews. Can I ask you what model of beanie you use ? I assume it’s smart wool ? Pierre from Malta Europe.
Luke, do you think that the tent they sent you the small one was maybe put up by the company and tested before they sent it out to you? Either way it doesn’t prove that they solve the problem. They may have solved the problem with a tent. They sent you if they tested it prior to sending it to you. About to get a larger tent and missing parts really doesn’t make the company look good.
My $89 Ozark Trail teepee did not leak last week. But then the expected rain showers moved south and missed my location. My small electric heater was insufficient for “hot tent” camping in the 40’s I had an enjoyable time staying at an RV site at the state park. I was a little disappointed that I missed out on the rain shower. I have no idea if this version of the tent would ultimately pass Luke’s tests. But I do recommend getting out and enjoying the outdoors with something that fits your budget along with a backup plan. (Hotel Corolla was mine) Enjoyed the review of these teepees, even if the results are a bit skewed. 👍😎
Is it possible that the medium tent wasn't "hand selected" but was simply tested prior to sending it to you bc they knew you would rip them a new one if it weren't perfect.
In theory couldn't you roll up the fly at the bottom for more ventilation in the summer? Also I don't see much of the "bell" style tents except in canvas. Which style would you think would be better for rain? I keep thinking about the teepee style having the slanted door for easier leaking possibilities 🆚 the bell style with the straight door and side walls. Thoughts and/or experiences with them?
They absolutely 100% tested that tent in the rain just to make sure it wouldn't leak before sending it to you. I would go even further and suggest this tent was a customer returns that they patched up/seam sealed themselves. That is the only way that this could look so used and second hand. I really doubt it has been anywhere near a factory from the date it was first sold.
Im looking into getting a hot tent and a stove for it.. My problem is, I want one big enough for 3 people and a stove comfortably.. so many options are are there i have no idea which to choose
Would spraying the fly down with campdry or waterproofing spray help? I know “you shouldn’t need to” but would it work? You can seam tape tents yourself too, if you feel the need to.
@TheOutdoorGearReview I am going car camping in Ocala National Forest the end of January and the weather should be in the 40s at night and 60s during the day. It may even get a little cooler than that. My 8-year-old tent leaks not only from the top but also from the window areas. I was thinking of getting a 4 mil extra large tarp and covering the tent with it (top and even the windows) and then putting the rainfly on top of that with most likely no Gap. I would raise the tarp above the windows when it's not raining. It rains pretty much every time we go there. Is this a really bad idea? I don't think there will be trees in the spot that we're at so I can't hang it above. Should I just buy a new tent? I'd rather go the tarp route because it's so much less $ and the tent still is holding up otherwise. I'm not too concerned about the temperature during the day inside the tent. I'll have the windows open. More concerned about night time temperature and the condensation.
Based on what I've seen in this video, I wouldn't buy those tents. The company is suppose to make sure those tents don't leak. Their suppose to be in great condition. We the consumers have to rely on their products to help keep us warm, dry and safe from the elements when we're out camping. I'm very happy your here Luke, to keep us informed on camping and hiking gear. Because we're learning valuable information about quality, prices, geo locations and weather situations when it comes to camping and hiking. I enjoy watching your videos and I hope there will be many more videos to come. Thank you for sharing.💞👍
I really enjoy your videos, as a Brit in UK some of your items we cant get thankfully I wont be wanting these. If the company said here's one we have sorted we tested it ourselves then sent fine I can accept that as a meh or with caution, but not telling you Nope. As for the Larger nope an inch of rain still means someone's got a sleep bag damp if not wet. I definitely wouldn't be touching any of these tents available.
I can't understand how some companies don't fully inspect and test their products before making them available to the public. The key to becoming a long standing and trustworthy company, one must ensure that they make quality products and spend the time and money from the start to make that happen.
There is no good excuse for not testing a design. However, when you're mass-producing a product, fully testing each individual item is difficult. There's a level of inspection that is possible, but there are defects that will get past, and it is just a numbers game and a matter of good customer service after that. As he says here about the large tent's leak, it is probably just a defect that no one would have found until actually subjected to rain, and that is a forgivable defect provided there is good customer service that follows. Many other products that perform poorly on this channel, however, are not so forgivable as the flaws are inherent to their design and would be detected immediately by taking the design out and testing in in real world use under all the conditions it should be expected to perform for customers. Now, the exception to the forgivable flaws is that forgiveness depends on the flaws being minor and uncommon. A pattern of flaws in everything being produced is indicative of shoddy craftsmanship and is right up there with allowing design flaws through.
@@phasmata3813 Yep, exactly, just look at vehicle defects, a new house, clothing with loose threads, tainted food and drugs and the list goes on and on. it goes back to the old saying $hit happens.
Hi and thank you so much for all your videos and great reviews and tests! I was wondering if there is an update on the rab tarp the orange one? I have looked but I have not found one. I have seen you using it in rainy an windy weather though. Just curious if its a tarp you would recommend buying as it seems like a great size and looked great and handy in your videos. Greetings from Sweden =)
It would be nice if you would have said something about the price of these tents, and maybe something about the company, for those of us that aren’t familiar with your previous videos. Price can drive quality control, as well as expectations. If it’s an $800 tent, my expectations would be different than if it’s a $200 tent.
Couldn’t you get to the vents simply by putting the pole at a diagonal, maybe even removing a segment or two? That seems a lot easier - and less likely to drop water into the tent - than removing the fly. On most pyramids I’ve used, you can just put the pole back inside afterwards, without adjusting any other thing.
yeah just open the door, pull the center pole, close the vents, and stand it back up. But you have to be an actual outdoorsman to know those types of things.
I’ve never owned a tipi style tent, maybe someone can correct me on my lack of knowledge. Wouldn’t this style tent be rained into as soon as the door is opened? No matter how water resistant it is?
You are the man and I love this style tent it's perfect just to stand up inside. Ohh man hand selected I wasn't ready for that I'm ready to get a med teepee style.Well I'll wait to see one straight off the shelf.
The tent they say they seem sealed by the zipper, is that the one you say looks used? I wonder if they didn’t fix one and send it, but didn’t really fix the design on them all. I guess you were speaking of the medicines tent? Curious!
Knowing you were going to do a second review on the medium tent seems like they would have made sure the tent they sent was brand new, not one that had obviously been used.
The leakage is disastrous. What if you were subjected to days of rain? Wet sleeping bags, clothing etc. would be threat. I suppose it would be a minor issue for people who have their auto or Super 8 motel nearby for alternate shelters.
@Luke, you should put the "rain on tent" sound on loop for a insomnia video! It's absolutely perfect! ♡
I have a noise machine with 12 sounds.....its amazing, my condo faces a 4 lane road and it really cuts the road noise from the aftermarket D BAG exhaust systems so their Kia sounds like a racecar

You are nice to give the leaky tent seller the benefit of the doubt.
Great review - really underscores how manufactures shortcomings on seam tape installation can create havoc.
You need some kitchen towel to put onto the wet floors and walls so that it shows if it's minor or major quickly and visually. Great testing again..thank you
Thank you for honest reviews.
I love this review and the unbiased disclaimers. Would love to see your review of the DOD Outdoors dome tent. Specifically the large size!
Thanks!

Being sent a mid size used tent is enough for me not to buy from them. There is no excuse for them to do that.
Luke,it's a failed product in both tents with your testing results. As always thanks for being real my friend.
I think it's one they pre-tested for review but that only reinforces your point in their lack of faith in their product.
They are being tougher on themselves by sending a used tent.
To be fair, if they really hand-picked the medium tent for you, I guess they’d clean it up and make it “presentable”. My guess is that this is like a showroom or returned tent, and they simply didn’t want to give away another brandnew tent. But anyway, good on you for pointing it out.

Review the Mushroom tent next. It's on sale!
😜
Perhaps the company took a flawed return, did the seam sealing, and sent that to you. Hence the problem with 'no pegs.'
Pretty much what I thought.
Good Review.
As I watch your videos, which I love, I was wondering just how many tents you have?
I would have liked to seen the insides compared to square footage.
Try kazoo tipi 8 person mine didn't leak in light rain seem taping is good with 150 Oxford polyester fabric
Could the used tent have been a recall return that they seamsealed then sent back to you?
My $89 Ozark Trail teepee did not leak last week.
But then the expected rain showers moved south and missed my location.
My small electric heater was insufficient for “hot tent” camping in the 40’s
I had an enjoyable time staying at an RV site at the state park.
I was a little disappointed that I missed out on the rain shower.
I have no idea if this version of the tent would ultimately pass Luke’s tests.
But I do recommend getting out and enjoying the outdoors with something that fits your budget along with a backup plan.
(Hotel Corolla was mine)
Enjoyed the review of these teepees, even if the results are a bit skewed.
👍😎
Is it possible that the medium tent wasn't "hand selected" but was simply tested prior to sending it to you bc they knew you would rip them a new one if it weren't perfect.
Illustrates a lack of faith in their manufacturing process though, I guess you missed that important point.
Hey togr, appreciate the review. Do you think this tent cold handle coastal wind and rain in a exposed location?
Would it be possible to reach the vents with the end of a hiking pole? As a short person, I have learned how to use “reachers” for lots of things!
How can you tell if stuff has been seem taped or not? Could you not just use a stick to open and close the vents?
Luke I would not buy any tent from dod cuz of ur review thanks for the review.
I just look at DoD website and they have a small Ichi tent, would you think they made sure to have the seam tape for the door?
All those lines and stakes look cumbersome to pack and set up etc.
Is the medium size tent a backpacking tent or a car camping tent?
Luke…review the Big Agnes version of this called Gold Camp….there is not much info on this tent series
You seem much broader today...different set up of camera/ new camera?
@@briargoatkilla - Be careful, you said the quiet part out loud.
@@briargoatkilla not really, I’m not an actual outdoorsman.
I’ve never owned a tipi style tent, maybe someone can correct me on my lack of knowledge. Wouldn’t this style tent be rained into as soon as the door is opened? No matter how water resistant it is?
You are the man and I love this style tent it's perfect just to stand up inside.
Ohh man hand selected
I wasn't ready for that I'm ready to get a med teepee style.Well I'll wait to see one straight off the shelf.
The tent they say they seem sealed by the zipper, is that the one you say looks used? I wonder if they didn’t fix one and send it, but didn’t really fix the design on them all. I guess you were speaking of the medicines tent? Curious!
Luke can you contact Eureka Tent Company and request that they send you a 8-10 person Equinox 4-season tent, color tan and green.
It would be nice if you could mention the cost and setup time . I suspect a cheaper tent some what but one costing over$100 should not 73 dan
Might be this was one of the test tents that leaked and then was fixed. Hince the missing hardware!
Do you stay in the tents you test?
Going tomsleep listening to the rain on the tents 😂
Knowing you were going to do a second review on the medium tent seems like they would have made sure the tent they sent was brand new, not one that had obviously been used.
I doubt it was hand picked, more than likely it’s a demo that’s used by testers such as yourself Luke.
The leakage is disastrous. What if you were subjected to days of rain? Wet sleeping bags, clothing etc. would be threat. I suppose it would be a minor issue for people who have their auto or Super 8 motel nearby for alternate shelters.
