You should take out the old tent again to waterproof test it alongside the new one. Leakage can depend on environmental factors, like windblown rain getting under the storm flap, etc. Set up both tents, facing the same way, in the same rainstorms, and see if there are differences in if and how both tents leak. That will eliminate variables and provide a more direct comparison. I understand if this isn’t possible due to twice the set-up work and twice the tent to lug around, but if it is logistically feasible, I think it would provide a better comparison.

Consider taking the old tent out for a rain test also, but cover the zipper flap area to determine the other leak point. Great work!!! You are the Consumer Reports of outdoor gear and clothing!

From South Africa set both of them up at the same time in the rain, facing them the same way, a little apart, so that one does not influence the variables on the other. use the "old" tent as a control ----IE allow the inputs, (rain, direction ,velocity, wind and any other incidental factors) will be identical. Doing this, this way will produce definitive results - Been in quality engineering for + 30 years rgds Warren

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Hope he does it this way. But if he sets them up side by side wind and rain amounts and angles of wind and rain will be affected by each tent next to each other.

This is why Luke has the best outdoor channel, he is totally transparent and above all honest with his reviews. Unfortunately, many creators seem to have been "corrupted" due to financial gain.

I 100% trust your reviews and your experience. I have watched so many reviews of yours and everything you have ever pointed out as defects or flaws in manufacturing is spot on and I myself would not buy this because of that storm flap alone. I live in a brutal part of the country as far as weather and I need as much protection from the elements as possible. Where I live the temperature can drop 40 degrees in a matter of an hour ! It also can go from a sunny day to an absolute storm, wether it be rain or a blizzard. So just on that storm flap alone I can not see myself purchasing one. Thanks always for what you do for our outdoor community Luke.

As the owner of this tent for 2 years with over 40 nights. I take it to a lot of rain strom and have no issue with the leaking at all even through some of people in my local community do experienced it.
It is the best tent to use against the wind so far. For anyone wanted to have it please do the 5p version it has much more space than the 3p version also buy from the Authorized dealer and asking them about the warranty on the leaking you'll find the best tent ever for windy camping.

Fair report on the facts; appreciate that and I'm going to watch the test results BUT, to be even fairer it would be an ideal test to set both tents up the same night and put old gear in the first tent to approximate the weight and bulk of yourself in the new tent. No two rainstorms can be identical for wind, rain volume etc....

The majority of the time, I use a tarp whether it be for a hammock or on the ground. As such, I tend to pay more attention to the wind direction and pitch my shelter to minimize wind blown rain.
I tend to do the same with a tent, but admittedly I am less meticulous about it.I don't know that any of my tipi shelters are bone dry. I don't use the floor, and I tend to set up away from the door.

Late to the party, I live in Japan and bought a DoD tent (this exact one in beige/sand) and I've not really had any issues with it. I don't think the eBay seller did you dirty, but maybe they purchased it from Amazon and did get a counterfeit? It's certainly a possibility.
I just picked up the Pomoly Bromance 70 for Autumn/Fall camping season and I'm looking forward to the extra space.
Thanks for doing these reviews, it's great to see some integrity in the sea of greed. Funnily enough, DoD tents are pretty cheap here in comparison to a lot of the others.

Figures...not only do I have a potential leak in a tent I paid 300 bucks for (It's dedicated ground sheet isn't cheap) I now have potential for it to be counterfeit because I bought it on eBay. This just makes me sick. Good thing I have the Tetra large as a fall back.

The whole situation sounds a bit sus. It was nice of them to send you a new tent to test however, their response sounded like they were passing the blame on to someone else and not really taking responsibility for their product. Hopefully, everything works out and they come out of this experience with a positive view from TOGR and your loyal fan base.😁

If the problem is really the door zipper storm flap, a clever person could do an aftermarket addition to widen the flap by another 1-3" with either sewing or glueing on the added fabric. Would work if done well.

Well, well, well I'm not surprised they are made in China. One thing I have noticed with tents from China, and pretty much anything made in China is the inconsistencies of their products. I thought these tents were made in Japan. So last month I was getting ready to purchase one until I saw the MADE IN CHINA. Some people may have already noticed this and some not but Chinese sellers often lie about their products or exaggerate their quality and performance.

    • @ExtremeSquared
      @ExtremeSquared 2 роки тому

There have been examples of sellers taking mass-produced Chinese goods, slapping a "Made in US/Japan" label on them, and increasing the price to a point people believe they are US made.
The US is somewhat good about shutting this down in the US market, but there are only so many auditors.
I wonder how good the Japanese system is.

  • @benbarnhart4460

If you want a true leakage test, then as others have mentioned, test both tents at the same time if possible. If there is any leakage, does it happen to both tents and do they leak in the same location.
Also, you mentioned in the first video and this video about the storm flap. If the tent was directly facing the wind and rain, it's understandable that rain will get under that rain flap. And the wind blowing hard, doesn't help.
So try testing the same tent in the same conditions facing the front of the tent, in different directions.
But I do agree on the storm flap, it's not long enough. But we all know, it's not the size that matters, it's how it perform.

Interesting... I had a similar scenario occur when seeking dealership status regarding Silky (Japanese saws, tools etc) for here at Alaska Raft Connection (intent upon adding Silky Saws to our rental and retail gear selections for remote destination Alaska rafting trips). I received all the factory-direct wholesale, MAP, suggested MSRP, etc. and shipping pricing. Of significance... I also looked into Japan-based bulk dealerships that would sell Silky at quiet a bit lower pricing as factory (ie. knocking a significant amount off single to small orders as well as quantity orders, much less for shipping, and faster delivery). I inquired about my findings with Silky... They essentially said the very same things DOD has responded to you concerning your tent issue. The strange parallels is the talk of knock-offs or not legit sales. Could be the case of faux-branded stuff, but I see a very similar response trend. Might simply be case of different outsourcing or batches in Asia. As far as Silky goes... Did I go thru with dealership status? NO. Did I ever buy in quantity from any sources? also NO. I did obtain highest quality supply and models wanted/requested? Yes... but it was unfortunately not fair-minded by going with a factory direct relationship. Did I receive any faux-branded or factory seconds Silky saws and blades? No... all were top-notch genuine. Hope this lends some useful/helpful perspectives.

@TOGR How about doing some more budget friendly reviews as not everybody out there can afford to spend to spend $500 to a $1000 on tent & setup what about doing some reviews & videos for people who love outdoor camping bushcraft etc but have a much smaller budget let's say $250 to $500 for a setup that is good enough to do outdoor overnight camping bushcraft etc as me myself & as I suspect quite a few others find most things way over the budget we can afford to to spend $500 plus on just a tent or $200 on just a tarp for outdoor camping or overnight camping I think this might also help pull in more views on videos if they have the chance to still do this but on a budget 😀 😉
