      How long did it take you to do on your own? I have been thinking on tackleing it myself but time is my issue. I don't mind doing it over a couple days in steps but I am clumbsy and may end up forgetting to torque stuff properly.

    I recently ordered a S&S 509g kit, it came with 2 rear cams. I returned, refunded, reordered the kit. Someone got the kit with 2 front cams. The parts looked well made, duplicate of a single part the error.

    Harley knowingly manufactured a poorly designed timing chain / tensioners on their earlier twim cams and had the nerve to sell a "fix" kit for over $500 (not including labour) which IMO sucks balls. My advice would be to ditch the timing chain completely and get a gear drive conversion instead. Harley really should be doing this for free as a failed tensioner can seriously screw your engine up.

      I'm having a gear drive S&S cams installed this week. Not cheap but I really like my bike and want to hang on to it and ride it hard. The shop recommends the 510 and it will cost 1400 bucks. I have 41k on my bike and just recently became aware of the poorly designed spring loaded tensioner issue. Harley should have addressed this years ago!

    • @vikingraider1

      Good choice mate. It’s a hefty price tag but if you’re serious about your bike then it’s money well spent and could potentially avert the risk of ruining your engine. I’ve heard from other riders how the tensioners crumbled and sent pieces of plastic through the oil pump which in turn caused the engine to seize and die. Fixing that is something you don’t want to have to do.
      Ride Safe!

    What's the best cam for mostly highway riding, for a 2005 Electra glide classic twin cam 88 fuel injected?
    Also they offer 2 different lifts to choose from, what's the best lift, and why?
    Thanks

    Can a person run gear driven cams on a twin cam but use chain/sprocket to the crank? IE avoid pinion shaft runout concern, and live with the outer tensioner.

    • @theodavies8754
      @theodavies8754 4 дні тому +1

      Interesting proposition. There would be no physical issues with the solution.
      The front cam runs in reverse but that's not relevant.
      The inner tensioner is the problem with servicing and would need to have the hydraulic port blocked.
      The outer chain could be either silent or roller.
      The rear cam is compatible with either gear or chain but would be less of a service issue with a hydraulic tensioner. End play on the setup is done with the same method so if you don't mind the hybrid setup and the crank is within the limit for chain it's maybe an elegant solution.
      I'm a clockmaker by trade and see many solutions that overcome weaknesses in design.
      The advantage of outer gear is mechanical loss and more controlled timing mostly.
      Chain reduces noise but Harley could easily of applied the solution with a little thought.

    • @JeffinTD
      @JeffinTD 4 дні тому

      @@theodavies8754 Yeah. It just seemed to me the two cams are going to run true to each other precisely enough for gear drive there, and that is the chain that requires a lot of shop time to service.

      Depends on how you like to rip. The 551 Kit is best for stoplight to stoplight riding. the 585 Kit is designed for top end power and highway riding. -DrewZilla

    I know this is an old video, but I've got a 2008 Sporty, with the Arlen Ness monster sucker, and some 2-1 drag pipes. I love to rip up in the high rev range, to the medium range. Whatcha reccomend Lemmy?

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  4 роки тому

      We don't have any standalone cam kits for Sportsters currently, so the main question is whether you have an 883 or 1200? If you have an 883, we'd recommend just doing an 883-to-1200 conversion kit. If you have a 1200 already, then you can do a 1200-to-1250 or the full-on Hooligan Kit with cams. Keep in mind that you cannot go from 883 to 1250 though. -DrewZilla

    For a bike that is so heavy, the cost benefit ratio is small for an engine that is a torquer vs high rpm horsepower bike. The engine is designed for torque, not horsepower

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  5 років тому

      We don't offer any cam kits for the 883. After an exhaust and air cleaner, the main engine mod would be an 883 to 1200 conversion. S&S only recommends their 482 cams for the 883 to 1200 conversion or the 1200 to 1250 conversion. -DrewZilla

      I recommend converting to hydraulic with the S&S TC3 Kit, S&S Hydraulic Cam Chain Tensioners, and then either the 585 for horsepower or the 551 for torque. -DrewZilla

      I'd recommend the 583 or the 510. The 583 has great response over a wide 1500 to 5000 RPM range. The 510 has strong response from 3000 to 5500 RPM. -DrewZilla

    G'Day, I'm riding a 2003 FXDWG Wide Glide. Most of the time I"m pulling a camper trailer, approx' 400 kg = 850 lbs. I'm thinking cams that will help when off the lights. Most of the time I"m sitting on the Speed limit?? Around 100 k/h to 110 k/h - This converted would be 60mph to 70mph. Guess, I'm from down under in Australia.

    I'm planning on buying a 1999 Road King that is stock and has not had any internal motor work done. I read that there is a chain tensioner problem with this year and motor. This bike has 37k miles, should I have the cams and gears replaced along with the chain tensioner to give this bike some pep? My style of riding is to tour the country.

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  5 років тому

      The chain tensioners should definitely be replaced, but you don't have to do cams unless you really want to. If you do want to upgrade, then yes, it makes sense to do it at the same time. -DrewZilla

    • @RevZilla
      @RevZilla  5 років тому

      The 509s are only for 99-06 Twin Cam. For an '07, I'd recommend the 551s for increased low- and mid-range (like stoplight to stoplight or twisties) or the 585s for top end power and highway riding. Both require adjustable pushrods. The 57H is in between the the 551 and 585 for RPM power gains. -DrewZilla

      The stock 103 does not have ACR, so you don't absolutely need the Easy Start cams. However, they do definitely reduce strain on the starter, so if you can afford the slightly higher price or plan on going another 50,000 miles or more, I recommend the Easy Start Kit. -DrewZilla

    With a 475 cam for a 107 m8 do you also have to change the tappets as well or can you use your existing parts. They seem to be marketed as a drop in and use product but I think there might be more to it parts wise than just the regular adjustments you'd do with a new cam.

      You can reuse the stock pushrods, but most people save time by cutting out the stock pushrods and using Quickee pushrods. The instructions are straightforward, and you can take a look at the pdf linked below. -DrewZilla

    2006 fxdb, 88ci, but was bumped up to 95ci. Stock had 70T pulley, but now has a 66T pulley...I am finding on lower rpm, 1500-2500 that I have lost the power...I have to rev a little higher to keep it going. Highway cruising is nice, but low speed it struggles a bit. What cam would help me out? 509? Need to bring the power band down. I dont use the upper rpm 4000 plus range...ie non aggressive riding.

      For your riding style and power range, I recommend you go with the 583 kit, as it's designed for Dynas and Softails and improves torque and horsepower from 1500 RPM. -DrewZilla

      I'd like to pick your brain for a moment. S&S replied to my same question "If you want the power down low go with the MR103 cams. it will get your torque at a lower RPM without having issue with detonation." What can you tell me about MR103 and 583? And maybe the SE 255? Although I rode the bike again today and I feel its dialed in pretty good stock. 2006 fxdb gears with 66T Pulley...works well.

    Can you run a 551 cam in a stock 88 or would the 509 be better?

      It's possible, but it's generally better to run the 509 in a stock 88. -DrewZilla

    2015 FXDL Low Rider 103, I have S&S Intake/Air Cleaner, V&H Short Shots pipes, and The V&H FP3 tuner. I rarely ride 2 up (maybe once every other month for under 50 miles, in Oklahoma). I like quick acceleration, and stretching it's legs on the turnpike when it is clear. My daily ride to work usually consists of town/hwy driving 40-60mph, and about 12 mile rip down the turnpike. I don't feel like I need more power in the Idle to 2000 RPM range. I don't think pushing much above the 5500 RPM range would be healthy with stock heads/springs. What would you suggest to maximize that 2000/2200-5000/5200 RPM range? I hope I can quench my power thirst for a couple of years...LOL. Thanks!

      A lot of cams are available for the 1500-5000 range and the 3000-6000 range. For you, you'd want the lower range. I recommend the 583, 583 Easy Start, and MR103 Easy Start cams. -DrewZilla

    If I did all the work of changing cams and realized I had lost toque at low rpm, I would be very disappointed.
    Example: I removed the factory exhaust and installed vance and hines longshots. I liked the looks of them on other bikes and the sound. But to my disappointment I lost about 1/3 of the torque below 3000. I was giving it more throttle to get moving and having to rev a lot higher than with stock mufflers. Mileage was down too. I later learned it was due to the vance and hines not having a crossover tube. Something about better scavenging of the cylinders. I read several dyno tests and the pipes with crossover made more torque.
    I'm a cruiser kind of guy, so it wasn't very long before I removed them and had a friend do a job on the factory mufflers. They are only a bit louder than factory, cops can't tell they were modified, I get better fuel mileage and the low end torque is where I want it.
    Perhaps you can suggest an S&S gear drive cam that is most likely to give me the low end torque I like. I want to get rid of the cam chain tensioner, I worry about one of them tearing up and damaging the engine.

    - What is the max run out I can have in order to safely install gear drive cams in my 04 FXDL 88"? 50,000 miles, & the engine has never been touched, & does not burn a drop of anything, ... & I beat the ever-loving piss out of it. Amsoil Synths in all three holes every 2,000.
    75% Of time just me, 25% two up. Slip on SE2s, SE plugs 'n wires, SE Heavy Breather, SE Stage 1 carb kit.
    Gear drive cam suggestions if I am looking for that mid-range, ... maybe even through 5,500rpm when slammin' into fourth?
    Also, do any of the kits come with a better oil pump, ... what about tappet replacement? I know I will want to do that, but are they always a separate purchase?
    Be well, ...

      We don't have the specs on-hand, but it should be listed in the Factory Service Manual. As for kits, the cam kits don't include an oil pump, but we would recommend getting the upgraded S&S TC3 pump and cam support plate. Lifters, pushrods, and springs are also available separately. The 570 cam kit would be good for the mid-range. -DrewZilla

      Take a look at the S&S Hooligan Kit for the power and hotter cam you're looking for. Also, to get the sound, you'll want a long 2-2 exhaust without a crossover pipe.

      That depends on what you're looking to achieve. If you want better low- and mid-range response, then consider the 509. If you want a bit more power for highway riding, then consider the 510. -DrewZilla

    If the part to install is one beard, I shave my beard short before I do the job.

      +Derrem Senchi We'd recommend the 625 Easy Start Cam Kit, so you do not prematurely wear out your starter motor and battery. Understand that you would need high-lift valve springs as well. Also keep in mind that with these cams, you're "on the cam" from 3000-6000 RPM. If you have additional questions, we recommend you speak with one of our Harley Parts Pros at 877-792-9455. -DrewZilla
