  • This video is my Maui Moisture Review. I've been following the curly girl method for over a year and I normally only use 2-3 products. I started reviewing new products for my subscribers and this one was highly requested. I would say that Maui Moisture is Curly Girl-ish as it does contain Polyquats but I found that it worked well and didn't leave any build up in my hair even though I pretty much strictly Co-wash.
    Shampoo: Maui Moisture Shea Butter Shampoo
    Conditioner: Maui Moisture Shea Butter Conditioner
    Other products: Biotera Alcohol Free Styling Gel

    I like that about Maui with regards to no bad chemicals and not a super thick consistency. Some of my body washes have had a tendency to get too thick and even upside down, are a pain to dispense.

    There are drying alcohols in the conditioner = not curly girl approved. There is a sulfate derived ingredient in the shampoo = caution curly girl approval. Bummed to find this out after I purchased it. Now, I feel like I have set-back my curly girl journey.

    I know this is a HELLA old video but what is this about polyquats?! I didnt know these products have them in and my hair has been suffering lately so I am now wondering if my hair doesnt tolerate them well... anyone got any anecdotal/personal views on polyquats to add to my research?

    • @CurlySusie

      I personally respond very well to products with Polyquats in them. I no longer use this line.... I found after a few weeks of using it my hair looked dry. But cantu has a TXTR line with polyquats in the conditioner & I LOVE it . No build up

    Did we know that Maui Moisture uses Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate - a relative of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate? I just bought it yesterday but haven't used it yet to see how it works on my hair. But I was just reading that it can also be drying to the scalp and hair like any harsh sulfate, though technically sulfonates are a "cousin"... Just wanted some thoughts please 😊

    • @ambergerhelper7852

      faeriesmak I’ll be honest. I’ve only recently went with the curly girl method. I’ve only tried L’oreal, Suave, Yes to Carrots and Maui Moisture that were sulfate and silicone free. But out of everything I’ve tried my whole life, the vanilla bean is my favorite shampoo. It lathers without making my hair squeaky. I’m a wavy/ curly, so I actually use the vanilla bean conditioner as a weekly treatment, because I find it extremely moisturizing. I use the cobalt blue conditioner (I believe it is coconut milk) on wash days. I recently got the color protecting shampoo- it smells amazing, but I’ve not tried it yet. Maui Moisture has made my hair feel like silk. I hope this helps! If you try it, share your results with us here in the comments!

      Amberger Helper Have you tried the Coconut Milk Shampoo (Blue bottle)? The Shea butter shampoo and conditioner aren‘t available in Germany anymore. Only the mask. Do you know if the mask is safe?
      And could I use those Shampoos everytime I wash my hair?

    • @ambergerhelper7852
      @ambergerhelper7852 6 років тому +4

      sunshine57788 I’ve not tried the Coconut Milk shampoo, only the conditioner, but I do love the conditioner. I’ve recently bought the Color Protect shampoo, and like it too. I also have the Blow Out spray.
      All Maui Moisture products are sulfate free and silicone free, and the first ingredient is aloe juice. Every product they make! I wash my hair every other day with the shampoo. Sometimes I don’t even use the conditioner- I just mix a dab of the conditioner in a squirt bottle with water as a leave-in conditioner.
      I really like all their products I’ve tried, but some people don’t have the results I have.
      If you decide to try it, let us know if it works for you and your hair type. Happy hair product hunting!

    The conditioner containes alcohol (high on the ingredients list) so I've avoided it. I've used the shampoo, as it's aproved as a clarifying shampoo, but avoided the conditioner.
    Doesn't it have alcohol in it in the US?

    • @rachelwalker3017
      @rachelwalker3017 4 роки тому

      I'm pretty sure the alcohols in it are fatty alcohols which aren't damaging like drying alcohols. One of the most popular comments on this video talks about it

    • @jeanettedanielsen7353
      @jeanettedanielsen7353 4 роки тому

      @@rachelwalker3017 it's harsh drying alcohol actually. And it's quite high up on the ingredients list as well.. And the masks contains waxes. So I wonder if there are not drying on her hair or building up.

    I've Found Down Under Naturals in Saskatchewan! It's the green bottle and silicone free! Also your curls look amazing in this video..very soft and moisturized with lots of bounce; I honestly thought you got a hair cut. I've heard that shea butter can be a little heavy, and my hair is long and fine. I had thought Maui Moisture would be something to avoid, so I appreciate the review, and also what you said about everyone being different...would you recommend this for fine hair, or do you think it would weigh it down?

    Great review Susie! I’ve been doing this routine for such a very long time many many years and every time I ever see people reviewing products the comment sections are full of “chemists” Who always made me feel terrified to try anything out there LOL without consulting Lorraine Massey herself lol! I have hair similar to yours, I have a loose curl pattern and I figured out over the years what works for me. I’m sure there are many people out there who would be horrified at the fact that I have to use a clarifying shampoo with sulfates every few weeks or my hair starts to look very limp and it’s not because I’m using silicones, it just happens over time for me. As soon as I use that clarifying shampoo my curl sort of reactivates and comes back! Co washing and sulfate free shampoo are not enough for me to be using them with out a clarifying shampoo every couple of weeks! I love the suave daily clarifying shampoo, the smallest amount brings my hair back to life and then I go back to Co washing and sulfate free shampoo’s until my hair starts to feel like the curl is being pulled out again. I tried the biotera gel because of you and I really like it! Love your videos, keep them coming!

      Hey Cuppy Cake. I try to have a more laid back approach. If something works well for you, I say go for it. I guess I’m Curly Girl-ish lol

    I just tried out the "As I am" coconut cowash yesterday. omfg. i love ittttttttttt. my hair is really fine using an actual conditioner as my "shampoo" oils me up a little too much, and even the most moisturizing shea moisture shampoos dry me out sooo badly. (im a 2C) i feel like the coconut cowash is right inbetween the two and it works great :) i am dying to try the conditioner from Maui Moisture mmmmmmm.
    You hit the nail on the head, its all trial and error. everyones hair is soo different and humidity is a HUGE part of it. i moved from hawaii where i lived since puberty when i got my curls, to the california central valley desert where its like 7% humidity during the day and lost all my curls!! there are so many factors. thanks for another great video :) your accent is everything!!!!!

For me this journey has been all about learning to love my hair. My hair runs in the 2b/2c/3a range (much flatter on top than Susie's) - but i had a major hair loss event several years ago and this is finally helping me to not hate my 'new' hair.

    I have this same set of shampoo and conditioner by Maui Moisture and I really like them. I started trying the "curly method" about a month ago and this is my second product trial. I do have one problem and I'm curious if others have it too. I try not to use shampoo as often and try to stick to conditioner but I find that my hair gets very greasy and the curls go away after a few days. So I always end up shampooing once or twice a week. Does anyone have any advice?

      Margarita Montoya your hair may need some adjustment. I just started a curly routine and it looks like I lose a lot of hair too. But actually it’s because I don’t brush them anymore.

      One thing to remember, before the CG method you were probably brushing/combing/touching your hair a lot more & the hair you naturally lose through out the day would have more opportunity to fall. With CGM the hair doesn’t ever get shaken loose & it is more likely clumped together with product so when you get in the shower & run your hands through your hair it will seem like you are losing A LOT at once. I notice a lot more hair comes out in the shower but I have to say that if anything, my hair is thicker & fuller.

    Hi Susie, I forgot you made a review about Maui, and just watched this again in your channel because I recently tried the Maui shampoo and to be honest, it does not work for me. It's actually one of the worst shampoos I have ever tried. My hair hates it. It tangles my hair soooo much, and leaves it super dry...I have tried it in the shower about three times to be sure it does not work for me and it is a NO, indeed. Hope this help others in the channel.

      Curly Susie same! They are the ones that taught me the cgm when I first started. Btw lately my scalp has been smelling like sweat and I was wondering if it is because it's my first summer without using sulfates and I live in a really humid place so I'm going to try to use baby shampoo with a bit of baking soda to clarify. It will be nice if you could possibly make a video about reasons why your scalp smells😀

    Hey Susie :)
    What do you think about the polyquats in there? I have the same line (+mask), but I haven't used those products in quite some time because I was worried that they would cause more harm than good 🙈

      Hi, i bought the same line. I got good results with them. I am still transitioning and those products really helped. I just learned about quats after i bought and used them. I think its ok to use maui moisture sometimes but i wouldn't use them at a regular basis. Greetings from germany☺

      Vanessa Isla Salazar hi 🙋 ja, genau so ging es mir auch. Die Sachen gekauft, und kurz darauf über Polyquats gelesen 😭 aber auch wenn man die nur ab und zu benutzt, muss man dann nicht ein sulfathaltiges Shampoo benutzen, um die Polyquats wieder herauszubekommen?

      Sternje21 😀 du bist schon die zweite deutsche die ich in ihren Chats antreffe☺ wahrscheinlich hast du recht mit dem auswaschen😑 aber es war mir dann doch zu teuer zum weg schmeißen. Also sie haben meine Haar Situation schon verbessert aber ich werde sie sicher nicht wieder kaufen. Stell sie doch einfach auf ebay rein wenn du sie nicht her nehmen magst.☺ ganz gut ist übrigens das hairfood von garnier. Das besteht zu 98% aus natürlichen Inhaltsstoffen☺

    Have you tried Cantu? If so did you like it in your hair (I heard it's kinda drying for certain hair types so I was curious)

    • @gisellanaranjo
      @gisellanaranjo 6 років тому

      I tried it Cantu shampoo last week actually. I used it in two of my washes and it honestly felt like my hair was squeaky clean, too clean. It has a strong lather and left my hair feeling dry and lifeless. I feel like it would help for anyone transitioning into natural curly hair since it cleans the scalp almost like shampoos with sulfates, but I wouldn't recommend it to people already following the curly girl method for a while.
      Hope this helped😅

      I got the cantu hair custard. It smells good and it made my hair pretty sticky but this is the very beginning of my cg journey and I used it alongside the maui hair smoothy and a gel. Pretty sure it was the custard that made my hair sticky though cos I've used the maui since and it dried nicely
