Glycerine is not only absorbing moisture at high dew points but also release moisture in very low dew points. So high porosity hair can get very dry using glycerin when it gets very cold outside. Maybe you can talk about that in a video in October or November when it's getting colder.
Please also talk about protein-moisture balance in one of your videos, and how to achieve it, and what products to use in what time period to keep that balance. Most videos show what you can do if it's already too late and you are in balanced, but what can you do to not get imbalanced? Thanks for your great videos, I'm not native English, so some articles on naturally curly are hard to read, but you explain it so simple that I understand what the point is. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹 in the middle of Europe 🤗

Thanks for doing so much research! Good to know about the ingredients--and the ones that could cause problems. I'm sure I'll come back to this video from time to time as a resource--in case I run into problems with my hair/products. BTW, I was at my dentist's office yesterday and since he was also a classmate way back 52 years ago, we started talking about a trip he was planning in his RV--to Nova Scotia and I said, "I 'know' someone in Cape Breton--she is on UA-cam." And he said that is the very place he is going. We live in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan so its a long drive--1600 plus miles.

Thank you thank you thank you! I am new on this journey and there is so much to learn. All of this does make a difference when choosing products. I have set aside some of my products for winter use now. Living in Northern Ontario the winters are very cold and dry. I am worried that my hair will dry flat and frizzy:( More winter tips for those of us who live in more extreme winter conditions would be great! (-30C plus windchill is a reality mid winter) My hair has high porosity and is a mix of 2a, 2b, 2c waves and curls. This is week 6 of using the curly girl method.

Thank you !!! I’ve been trying to find out so much info about ingredients and the cut and dry basics of taking care of my wavy hair. Normally ppl just say “I use this” or “I love this” and they do not delve into WHY or HOW it works for their hair. While I think those videos can be great, it’s really overwhelming to watch someone’s 10 step hair routine and just have to wonder IF something would work for you based this other person using it. This video was so so informative and was about the why and how of ingredients. Thank you !!!!

Hello Susie I found your channel the other day and I love it. I am a 3B curly girl that has flat ironed her hair since she was 15 or so, I only flat iron once a week. I’m starting to leave my hair curly again ( tried before gave up) my hair at the moment is the best ever been and the longest so ironing has become a serious task and very tiring. I can safely say mi hair is healthy it shines, is soft at the touch and doesn’t frizz. I die my hair black every month and I have never used a hair drier in my life. I let my hair air dry it takes 2 full days for it to do that. At the moment is only have waves back I will keep following your channel to learn more about the products and techniques you are using. Congratulations on baby 2

I’m not exactly sure because I had a perm about 6-7 weeks ago and I asked for the tightest curl. I believe the rods were pink? Anyway I’m wondering if there’s a way to change my curl pattern? I like my curly hair but I want bigger curls if that make sense😂 and PS pre perm I had a little curl underneath but straight on top from damage. Thank you for the great information on alcohols too! So confusing but you made it understandable for me!❤️❤️❤️

Is it a specific type of oil or a generic category including oils like argan oil and coconut oil both of which I use for my hair and seem to help me to soothe the freeze. And second question is, why does the CGM entail only gel as styling medium. In other words, can we use mousses granted that they have approved ingredients. Thanks a lot for your help. I have never dyed my hair and it's been years since I have straightened. I just started using shea moisture last week. Today is the second I washed it but I am still not happy. It looked 2b before and now looks like a mixture of that and 2c. I see more individual waves but I still have some frizz. I use microfiber towel and tonight is the first time I am using a satin pillow. I must say I use a silicone gel, but it could also be I haven't washed my hair enough yet with my new products?

2 months in and I'm still pretty puzzled by hair typing. I feel like I have all the hair types up to 3b. I have lots of 3a/b spiral curls on the ends of my hair and underneath. Mid-shaft I have some 2b waves and 2c curls. On the crown and the back, it's mostly 2b and I scrunch and use pins a lot to make it less flat. I don't mind the look because I have a great layered cut that makes it look like I style it this way but I'm still unsure what to use for product.
I'm mostly doing gel cast styling with moisture moisture moisture since I have some grey hair and some bleached highlights growing out. Those strands are total 2b.
What I'm also finding is the more I moisturize my hair with leave-ins and co-washing is that my hair is getting softer and less frizzy but a little droopy especially on the first day. My curly hair seems to get curlier as the days go by but my wavy hair gets straighter too. I think I'm high porosity because of the way my hair seems to get drier between wash day and day 5. But the float test indicated I have low porosity hair since it wouldn't sink. I have fine thick hair. I also have curl damage from heat styling and hair damage from coloring = high porosity???
Basically, I'm wondering if in the beginning if it's worth it to try and type your hair. I'm thinking my hair is going to continue to change and develop different curls and textures as I go.
With lots conditioning can your hair go from high porosity to low porosity? I'm using rice water treatments every other wash day, lots of moisturizing conditioners, oil sprays, and flax seed gel. That seems like a lot of protein and moisture. The curly girl method is a fun challenge and I can't wait to see how my hair turns out. Thanks for the video and all the info to keep it fun and interesting to make this change.

Susan Tomkins I have too. I’ve heard it depends on if your hair is clean or dirty.

A clean piece of recently FALLEN out hair that's preferably not a "broken off" strand is the best test subject. Remember that ALL your strands are NOT "created equal"! For instance, hair that covers your head (as opposed to hair underneath) may have a different result from each other because the hair on the top of your head is more exposed to being "tortured" by the exposed environment! Also, if you have damaged hair (like from chemical processing and heat tools) on the lower part of your hair, it may sink (be more porous), while the top "undamaged" growth part of the strand may float because it's less porous from damage! These are ways to evaluate "different" results! 😀👍🏻

I am a mostly straight until menopause hit and the crazy curlie grey hair arrived. So now I am a 2 B. I am learning a whole new way with my hair. Went straight to hair dresser and cut off 8 inches of straight. I am having to try lots of products as I have super course and thick hair. Does course hair (non color treated) weird grey hair count as high porous?

Hello ! Love your videos, what do you recommend for styling a 2b thick hair ? Cream, soft gel of hard gel ?

    • @CurlySusie

I’d mix in a small amount of cream with a medium hold gel :)

I have low porosity hair (3a Curl) and I am to still do a rice cleanse but to dilute it with water so I don't get protein overload- thoughts? I also wonder how you feel about Gelatin treatment - not sure if you know as you have high porosity- but is it too much for low porosity?

    Hi there,
It was very easy to understand video. Thanks. I had a question not related to this video, can you suggest a curl cream? I have tried the devacurl super cream but it doesn’t give me much frizz control and definition ( I have 2c, 3a,3b mix) I do like gel but for wash and go I prefer a cream ( no crunchy look) let me know if you have tried any. Thanks again.

Curly Susie and friends, may I ask for your advice? My hair (low-porosity, 2B/2C with some 3A loose spirals forming as I get better at this, color-treated) has some nice frizz-free defined noodly spirals in the underneath layers, but most of the 'outer layer' of hair is disorganized and fairly frizzy. I am using Shea Moisture shampoo and rinse-out (which seem have been a game-changer for getting some 3A spirals), then some Camille Rose leave-in scrunched into dripping wet hair, then DevaCurl Arc Angel gel or LA Looks firm hold gel, then scrunched with a t-shirt, then diffused with clips at the crown. What am I doing wrong? The only things I can think of to try are (1) sandwiching some argan oil between my leave-in and gel (can't seem to get enough moisture) and (2) turning off the hair dryer much sooner (although the more I diffuse, the more curls I get.) Any thoughts, anyone? (Sorry to party-crash with a selfish question, Susie!

Hey there!! Might just be using too many different products. I try just conditioner (don’t rinse it out 100%) & Gel. And deep condition your hair once a week. Try that for 2 weeks & see what happens.

Hi, I'm curious as to what happened to your hair if you followed Susie's advice? I have the same type of issues and the same type of hair as you and I'm getting pretty desperate regarding what more (or less) I could do...

Hi Susie, I am trying to help my niece out over here. She has very dense hair, her hair curl is very curly between a 2c to 3c, she has more of a wavy type curl but it's tight, but it's not zigzag type and her hair is very course. She is white but almost has african american type hair. I want to do the curly girl method to her hair but I am not sure what type of products to use on her hair to make them look nice. Her hair is very bushy and very long. Can you help me please, lol

Do you have fine hair? Or is it thicker? Mine is very fine and I’m afraid co washing will make it too oily and weighed down.

So, if my hair is primarily S shaped waves, but with some loose 3 dimensional spirals mixed in, what type would that actually be? Because it seems like a combination to me...

Your videos are fantastic! Here's a tip for curly people with dandruff. Dandruff is caused by microbes we all have on our skin reacting negatively with our scalp. When I'm in the shower I use a dandruff conditioner--there are at least 2-3 brands of condish out there like this that are curly girl safe--(no shampoo!) in a squeeze bottle with a cone shaped tip. I dilute that with water to make it more fluid in the shower and I apply that to my scalp, massage it into my scalp really good and apply my cowash to the rest of my hair. I let that sit while I wash my body. Then I rinse it all out and use a microfiber towel to scrunch out most of the excess water. I apply my products. (In my case I have very porous hair so I use the heavier Shea Moisture line made for porous hair.) Then I have to diffuse because the moisture plus the heat of my scalp encourages the growth of these unwanted microbes--no air drying for me. I have dandruff and itch free hair for up to 4 days--and a very clean scalp!--without the use of dandruff shampoo. Ever. Hope that helps someone!
Susie you are so beautiful! I'm so jealous that all you have to wear is a light lipstick and look so fantastic! Great channel!
Reposting this comment to a newer video so more people will see it. Hope it helps!

    • @jenthulhu
      @jenthulhu 6 років тому +1

Well Head and Shoulders makes several. You just have to read the labels VERY CAREFULLY. It's not a 2 in 1--it's conditioner only. The Head and Shoulders brand even has one called a co-wash. There is also a Dove brand conditioner that is for dandruff. These can be difficult to find in the sea of 2 in 1s but they are there, in at least a few stores. I've found them on amazon and in Target stores. I don't know if UA-cam allows links in comments, but I'll try to post at least one.

This second one used to be a prime buy, but it's 3rd party sellers only now. Hope this helps.

The Dove conditioner says it's currently unavailable. I usually buy in large quantities and stockpile, so I haven't had to buy in a while, but it gives you an idea of what it looks like: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N10N0ZQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
