    1:28 don't use sulphate, silicone, parabens, mineral oil, waxes, and drying alcohols
    3:51 don't use any heat
    5:01 fight frizz
    don't dry your hair with a terry cloth towel
    use a satin pillowcase instead of cotton.

    Honestly, the tip of putting hair gel in the shower is something that really encouraged me to wear my hair curly. I’ve tried the plop method, the silicon and sulfate free shampoos and conditioners, and eliminating heat but for whatever reason I couldn’t figure out how to eliminate the frizz and get curl definition.
    Thank you so much for simplifying the method and products to use when first starting out.

      Curly Susie Hello:-) I'm just starting!! hair a little crazy at the mo but I'm going to stick with it!! and it's quite liberating to be free of straighteners and damaging hair products!!! I have always had frizzy hair and it's very thick!! but I can see curls forming on the root and bottoms of my hair but the middle just wavy,do you have any advice on what to do ? thanks Susie any advice would be great thank you:-)

      Great tips! Thanks from a woman who has had good hair days by accident, likely when using cooler water, I now realize thanks to you. It seems like a lot of work, but honestly, I’m working hard right now, and not satisfied with the results. Maybe i can unlearn bad habits and try some new ones. I have avoided the CG method since it seemed that I’d need to jump in with both feet. But I’m gonna try the ‘two things’ and see how it goes. Thanks for posting!

    I am happy to say I decided not to give up on the Curly Girl method. So I've continued using the sulfate free shampoos/conditioners. I now use the Tee Shirt instead of towels. And after watching more of your videos I've tried the "casting" with gel. And I now scrunch, scrunch, scrunch, let air dry. And slowly my curls are "remembering" to bounce back!
    Even my neighbor who is use to seeing my frizzy, out of control dry mess of hair has commented on how beautiful my hair is looking! My hope is in a month or so my natural curly hair is gonna look amazing. And it's already starting too! All these years I fought against my curly hair by flat ironing & curling with a curling iron. All because I didn't know how to work with my natural curls.
    I'm so happy I found your videos!! I have you to thank for teaching me the correct way to handle my curly hair!! 💕

      Thank you so much for your comment. I was you almost a year & 1/2 ago now & I will never go back. I’m not going to lie, I’ve had a couple of bad hair days, especially In my early stages of trying new techniques and products but my hair is a million times better. I watched one of my first videos today & I can’t believe the difference in my hair since then.
      Keep it up! You’ll be very happy you did ❤️

      i grew up in denver, and weirdly enough, have ended up in texas. i hate the heat with a burning passion, and it might as well be hot year round, with no more than three weeks of cool temperatures. the only escape i get is the wonderful feeling of a cold shower.

    Great hair! (And great accent 😉) I appreciate the low cost recommendations. I was a devacurl user for years but now being home with twins I won't justify the cost. I also just found Down Under at Walmart for $3!!! I'll check out the gel at Sally's. Trying to find Conditioner and gel comparable to Devacurl has been frustrating to say the least. My hair loved it but the amount needed daily and cost of $60 a litre is crazy. Thanks so much for your video. Much love from Ontario Canada (with family in Glacé bay lol)

      Curly Susie I'm born and raised in Ontario but my parents are both from Glacé Bay. Mom lives there again now that she's retired.
      You are the second UA-camrs I've found looking for a particular topic (curly hair) and the accent made me stay lol. I also enjoy Jenna Catherine (NB) for natural beauty products. It's so refreshing to hear the perspective of a Canadian since there are so many Americans mentioning products that we can't get our hands on or are outrageous in price.

    I brush my hair when it's dry before the shower. It's satisfying and effective and when I wash it it goes back to the way it sits normally. I never hear people suggest this, but it feels like a clear solution. Some people think it breaks more when it's dry, but I definitely think it breaks more when it's wet. I tried not brushing my hair, but it's so much more satisfying to run a brush through it.

    • @ghost4294
      @ghost4294 3 роки тому +1

      yeah same I have 2a/2b/3c hair and I saw that you're supposed to brush when wet but for me I would brush it when wet and it would weigh down everything and pull my curls apart. So basically now I brush it when dry but with a wide toothed comb, not a full brush

  • @Sarahopal

    Your hair is gorgeous! Thanks for the tips. One thing I found that has saved my curls is aloe vera gel. It is the only product I use now in my hair after I wash it (I only wash with silicone, sulfate, etc free and I only wash it a couple times a week). No alcohol added, just the stuff you use for sunburns. It is absolutely AMAZING! I add some before I pat it dry and run my fingers through it then scrunch my hair with a little bit more. Most days I just dampen it with a spray bottle and add a little more Aloe. My curls are more defined, it doesn't weigh it down, they are soft and bouncy. If I use too much it feels crunchy so I just dampen my hair and it's all better. I never thought of using a Tshirt instead of a towel that's a great idea.

      Hi Marie!!! Gel is my “must have” product for the last year. Sometimes you have to excitement with amounts... if your hair dries hard... it’s an easy fix, just scrunch out the crunch. There are lots of videos on this. Gel should be alcohol free. This one is great but I LOVE Biotera Alcohol Free styling Gel from Sally. It’s amazing.

    I'm so happy I found this video. I used to be a really curly little girl, then they cut my hair and I lost my curls; leaving a weird frizzy mess... When I was a teenager with all the "taylor swift" curls I tried to get them back, and I did! but I don't remember how I did it, Then I decided to cut my hair in a short bob and I lost my curls again... And now my hair is long, waaay too long, and I notice it wanting to curl A LOT, but I didn't know how to help it ( I almost never straighten it, I just put it on a bun or a ponytail) and now I'll try the things you said and hope for the best!! I'm subscribed now :D

    I started the curlt girl method in july this year. My hair used to be dead straight with a slight wave after i washed it and i would curl it everyday with a straightener. I chucked my straightener, silicone conditioner and sulphate shampoo in the bin and bought natutal conditioner and shampoo. Since doing the curly girl method my hair curls beautifully especially with the help from gel and curl mousse. I'm still way off from having effortless curly hair due to the constant damaging and colouring that i have done in the past, but im so happy to be natural again. My hair also seems to grow quicker since i dont damage it anymore which is a wonderful bonus.

    Thanks for posting this. I've been going through this transition over the past year. I've been trying different products and see what looks best. I have a collection going. Lol ❤️. I will try finger combing in the shower next time. I use a wide tooth comb, and I do comb the tangles out but my hair seems stringy when I do that.

    I'm starting to question whether I have wavy or curly hair. My hair has like a semi wavy pattern with some weird curls and a lot of frizz when is air dry, (I too use heat on a regular basis) so I'm gonna follow your recommendations to see how it goes. Thanks a lot for the video.

    I have straight hair but as I get older, Ill get 1 random curl right in the front and my mom and brother have curly/wavy hair. I want to see if this makes my hair a little wavy but the CGM is so daunting. This is helpful!

    • @emmaj1384

      I turned 30 in June ‘20 and my hair always looked basically straight with a very very mild wave. My grandma had curly hair, my mom has wavy hair, and my dad has straight hair. Then in early October ‘20, I started noticing a little section of hair on the right going wavy. Like even after I’d comb it, the wave would stay. So after doing some research, I started applying some of the techniques, and now the waves are gradually taking over both sides. So far, I’ve just been consistently using a T-shirt instead of a towel, and squishing in my conditionner, and not combing after it’s dry (I do that in the shower). I haven’t figured out the next part yet, all the gel etc stuff once you get out of the shower, but I bought flaxseed today to make gel. I actually need to get it cut, maybe with some layers, it’s too long for the waves to really come out, I think

    Hey! Thanks for this! My hair turned curly when I was pregnant and I didn't know what to do with it. I kept my normal routine but my hair was kinda big and weird. I made some mistakes with coloring but have already been taking good care of my hair since I want to grow it out. I have an appointment tomorrow to get the last of the dye cut out. So I get a fresh start! I use shae moisture moisture retention shampoo and conditioner on my hair and typically just oil my hair with argon oil or coconut oil and I never use heat. Hopefully there won't be a transition period. I will say that I dried it with a t-shirt today and it was still super wet but it already looks better!

      Hi Lacey!! The only way to know for sure is trial & error. It the Silicones are truly water soluble you should be ok. When I FIRST started I had a Biolage conditioner that had some of the “peg” silicones in it & I used it until the bottle was empty. My hair was in rough shape back then so hard to say if it made a difference but I have to say that I didn’t really have a problem with build up... that wasn’t a great answer but hope it helped. Just try it??!!

    I have coily curly hair and cutting silicones made a huge difference in the health of my hair. That plastic coating was keeping moisture from getting into my follicles. I already used silicone free shampoo and conditioner by lucky chance but I found out that my deep conditioner masks all had silicones! So basically none of my leave in conditioner or styling products were able to penetrate and moisturize my strands. After switching to silicone free deep conditioner my hair is way more moisturized. I do however use a styling mousse containing water soluble silicone as a final step because my hair is color treated. It doesn't require shampoo or clarifying to remove. You can Google a list of soluble and non soluble silicone types, but even still just know that you are suffocating your strands until you wash it out.

    I do all of this. Changed my shampoo three months back. Unfortunately still looking for a good conditioner. Having chronic dandruf makes it very difficult to find products that won't irritate the scalp. However I have noticed that just swapping the towel to a t-shirt makes a hell of a difference.

      My daughter has thin curly strands but a ton of them and dandruff. When she was little we used Dove products on her hair but we had to switch to Head & Shoulders. Then as she has hit teenage years her oil production has increased (as has her dandruff) and her dermatologist said we had to keep up with the H & S. Our hair stylist didn't have a good recommendation for curly dandruff suffering either. Curls tend to go with dryness - not oily.

    The first easy step by step and to the point video! Thank you for taking the time to share! My hair is terrible, growing up my hair would be brushed out into a frizz and tied up in a ponytail then a plait, now it's frizzy curly but still meh. I want to see if the curly girl method will work on my hair!
    I used to usually straighten my hair once a week - nowadays I'm just too lazy because it's never perfectly straight anyway. I do have one question though, eventually if my hair is as lovely looking as yours, would it be ok to straighten it now and then? Say once a month? (if that) Thank you again!

    I love how simple your routine is. What conditioners do you recommend for cowashing the scalp and hair? I have a similar curl type (2C/3A) and am worried about an oily scalp if I start this method. Another question! I work out as well and find that if I don’t wash my hair afterwards (currently using shampoo), my scalp feels itchy from the salt/sweat. Do you find that conditioner washing helps to cleanse the sweat and prevent itchiness in the scalp?

    • @CurlySusie
      @CurlySusie  6 років тому +16

      Yes, I work out often & I also run so I sweat a lot! Conditioner washing is the way to go. I have to use a light conditioner or my hair gets weighed down. I like Down Under Naturals NUDE, Garnier Naturals & V05 Naturals (all inexpensive) you will be so surprised ... conditioner washing won't make your roots greasy (I was skeptical)

      Thanks for the tips! I have a suspicion that my scalp may be itchy from using sulfates in the winter. I only wash my hair 1-2x a week at the moment and the itchiness gets worse the longer I prolong my wash days. I'm considering this method cause I don't want to have to shampoo my hair every single time I work out. I'm hoping this works out

    Hi 😊 great video, I'll have to try this method, I have super thick, wavy, unruly hair, about the same length as yours and I have tried so many products and I can't make it look good while loose. I have one question, how do you wear your hair when you work out? I tie it up in a ponytail, but that means I have to brush and comb, and it would be nice to have a way to avoid that

  • @caseyt4140

    Great video and beautiful hair! I have fine, wavy, frizzy hair. It is more flat in the back with an under wave. I think I have a "2A" hair type. I need some advice on products. I was about ready to buy a boat load of expensive stuff and thank goodness I found the Curly Girl info. Given Amanda G's problem below with Devacurl, do you not recommend it? What other product should I try. Also, have what they are calling "High Porosity" hair and need to use anti-humectants in climates, like here in Richmond, VA. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance for your help!!

    This helped so very much! Thanks for letting me know that it takes awhile for the curl to come back to normal...for now my hair is not looking so great. I'm also experimenting with different products to restore curl definition and reduce frizz but not finding one I like just yet that doesn't leave my hair feeling gunky or heavy.

    • @CurlySusie
      @CurlySusie  6 років тому

      Thanks so much for watching! My advice is to start with just conditioner & gel & experiment with the amounts until you perfect that ....and then build from there :)

    • @prayerangel1
      @prayerangel1 6 років тому

      I'm also having trouble with the don't comb it when it's dry thingy...my hair looks like an old mop right now, especially when the gel dries in it. If I don't at least TRY to separate the strings it just looks like a dirty, brown mop. When I do try to gently separate it with my fingers or a wide tooth comb, it breaks the wave and gets frizzy anyway. I'm thinking the gel, no matter how little I use, is a mistake. It just makes my hair feel and look heavy and dirty.

I was able to have tight defined curls yesterday but today, I used the same product to smooth my hair and used a curling iron for wavy curls.
