  • This video is about my Natural Curly Hair Journey. I am hoping that this video motivates you to start your own journey back to having healthy hair. My hair was completely fried & damaged for probably 10 years prior to starting the Curly Girl Method. Enjoy! I recently had a good question from a subscriber & to answer/clairify. The alcohols in conditioner mainly CETYL ALCOHOL are actually moisturising alcohols and are safe to use. Im going to post a link to a descriptive video below.

I would have never guessed you where a fitness weightlifting girl. So interesting to see the different sides of you. I enjoy your videos. They are simple and easy to follow and you get right to the point. The technical stuff like editing, sound could sometimes be better, but I'd rather have low quality sound than low quality content. Thank you for helping us curly girls.

Curly Susie most youtubers start out like this and as your channel grows, so will you and your equipment and skills. I just saw a makeup tutorial where someone recreated the first make up video ever uploaded to UA-cam and it was so fun to watch because there was no voiceover, just piano music, no instructions not even in text form and the lighting was horrible. Sometimes I forget how spoiled we are now-a-days with video quality. Anyway I thought you might enjoy this little story. Keep those curly videos coming and sending lots of encouragement and excitement for what is to be in the future.

When I used to straighten my hair, I was always nervous too! I always had to worry about rain or sweating too much. My hair was a constant source of stress for me. I realized how much this affected people's perception of me when one day in grade 6, my teacher conducted a class activity. We would all tape a piece of paper to our backs and write a compliment on each other's papers. When I looked at my paper, one girl had written "cares about her hair." I'm so glad I embrace my curls now. It takes the same amount of time and effort at home to style my hair, but once I'm done, I'm good to go.

I’m just starting out, and one of my sweet followers on Instagram referred me to you. And I have to say, you are my number one favorite. First of all, your hair pattern (I think) is similar to what mine is, but really even more than that, you are a natural at these videos and you have a wealth of knowledge but such an effective way of delivering it, that I feel as though I am just chatting with a friend. I had also subscribed to a bunch of other people too, some of whom you have linked in this video, but you are in a league of your own. I enjoy them too, and definitely appreciate their beautiful hair, but you stand out completely. Thank you for sharing!

This is honestly so inspiring! I've always gone back and forth trying to love my 2c hair... but I've I dye it so often and have heat styled it so much that the curls aren't even nice when I do keep it natural. I'm just a few weeks in to the curly girl method, and still figuring out my products. This is an awesome video to get more motivation to keep going!
P.s. You looked STUNNING on your wedding day, and you and your husband are both gorgeous!

You're SO MUCH MORE beautiful with your curls! I have exact the same hair as you do (just a bit darker). Exactly same experience during childhood with my mom brushing away all my curls and waves. I have straighten my hair until I was 28 when I moved to a tropical country (thank God!!) where it was impossible to keep it straight. I have been since then trying to fight the frizziness (but still loving my natural look) and ONLY TODAY did I find out about this method (UA-cam suggestion) and your very inspiring channel. Thank you very much. I'll be a faithful follower.

I just learned about the curly girl method a few days ago and just found your channel. Your story is so much like mine. I have had curly hair for ever but didn't even realize how curly it really was until I went and got it cut by someone new a couple weeks ago. It had to the best hair cut I have ever had. Since the cut I have LOVED my hair and than by complete accident learned about this method I am so excited to learn more great ways to embrace my curly hair. I am so tired of ALWAYS wearing my hair in a ponytail because I just don't have time to straighten it. Anyways all that to say I love your channel and you have been so inspirational to me.

It's so reassuring to see those old photos, thank you for sharing! I almost never straightened my hair (maybe 3 times in my entire life), but my mom / i also used to brush them until they were as close to straight as possible, + a couple of months ago i bleached all of it to death and then tried a different colour every couple of weeks, for a good half year. I'm in my first week of cgm now and dear god it's a long road ahead. But i'm excited to see what's coming!

I'm just starting my CG journey and I love your channel. I have a very similar curl type being between 2c and 3a and we're close in age, so you're very relatable for me :) I thought I lost my curls during my childhood as you mentioned then began dyeing and strightening my hair in high school. I often wanted to wear it down, but it was a frizzy disaster no matter what I did so for years I'd curl it with a curing iron if I wanted to look nice. Otherwise it was back in a bun *always*. I don't know how I came across videos on UA-cam about the CG method but they've consumed my life over the past week and I'm so excited to see what my curls are capable of. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love love love your wedding day hair! I have naturally curly hair that I loved in my early twenties and then after a few babies, my hair thinned a little and I started flat ironing and now I am going back to curly and hoping the curls come back again like they were! I am about 2-3 weeks into my commitment of following the curly girl method and already I see noticeable difference and hope it just continues! My curls look great underneath and some of the over laying hair is almost straight so that’s awkward. I pull those pieces back a lot and am just trying to be patient. Your video is inspiring.

I just started! I had no idea how curly my hair actually is and every day it was getting better. Four days into the CG I went to have my hair trimmed. After I had totally discussed my goals to the stylist, she brushed out all of my curls🙁, I was gasping inside. I have delicate curls as well. I am so happy you posted a picture of your hair post “first trim” because that’s what my hair did today, even after co-washing. So it will get better, whew! Good to know. Thanks for the videos, I really appreciate them!

I wore my hair curly yesterday and loved it for the most part, until later in the day my hair was slightly weighed down by the tiny bit of argon oil I put in it. I don't have gel yet, but I'm looking forward to when I get the gel I bought from Devacurl. You're right! I'm hoping it will be worth it to keep it curly. How do you wear your hair when you have to keep it up out of your face? I work at a hospital and currently have my hair sort of in a pineapple style, but just not as high on my head.

Starting this journey today! I don't even know how I found your channel but your story could be mine. So, so curly as a kid but as soon as I started school I was brushing out my hair and blow drying it as straight as I could. And then straightening. Oh my god. I've never known what to do with it - I could never get it to look good - frizz, frizz, frizz. Even if I straightened it, it was curling by the end of the day. I ruined it. I've ordered Shea Moisture products and can't wait for them to get here. I tried scrunching my hair and letting it air dry with no product and was shocked how wavy it was! I'm hoping I get my coily curls back.

Your hair is more similar to mine than any other UA-camr I've seen so far. I just found you tidal and I'm so excited!!!! My hair has been super long, but I cut really short in the early fall. My hair is just to my shoulders when curly now. Sadly, I've been flat ironing it and/or blow drying it until a few weeks ago. I've done curly girl a lot over that last 12-13 years, but then I'd have times I wouldn't for a long time. My hair when I was pregnant with two of my kids went straight, so weird. My curl is back now though!!!!! Yay!!!!!

Thank you so much Sharon. The first couple of weeks are so hard, but I'll never go back. my hair is too easy & i love it now.

My mom also used to brush out my curly hair when I was growing up. She used leave in conditioner and it used to take her like 45 minutes! My hair was very curly so it was so sore! I just want to cry when I think of the hair that I had as a child that I didn't appreciate. It was waist length and naturally blonde and very thick and ringlety, but I hated it. Anyway, I am loving my curly hair now and on the way to healthy, long curly hair again. Thanks for the video... it was very inspirational to see.

Can't blame you for straightening your hair in the 2000s, I am about the same age and the pressure was real. Curly hair were not fashionable. Thanks to my laziness I resisted even though many people always asked me why I didn't wear my hair straight.

Love to see your story. You and I are similar in that I can wear my hear blonde or brunette and it still works. I was blonde as a child, but as I got older it got darker. My family still calls me the Spanish word for Blonde. But the Balayage is killing any chance of wave/curl I may have.

Oh God Susie!!! I am from India & My story looks kind of similar to yours.. I also started CG method recently and my baby is 3 months old as pregnancy is the period when you step out very less and stay with your natural hairs and then I discovered this CG method just a month ago. Hope it will give good results for me as well!!😀

Love your videos, they're so helpful and they give me hope!! I've dyed my hair approx. 30 times, blow-dried daily, straightened 2-3 times a week and I still brush it down all the time. Now it just looks like an awkward mix of straight/wavy/curly in the back, it sticks to my face, looks dull/unhealthy and I HATE it.
Do you think it would be useful for a wavy girl to start this method? I'm not starting out with beautiful curls like you had in the picture at 6:09. Also, would you recommend getting a layered haircut to start the whole process?

My story is a lot like yours. I had an awful relationship with my hair growing up. I'm much older than you, at 63, but when I was in high school and college the style was straight as well. We didn't have flat irons, so I would wrap my hair around my head, pin it with bobby pins and sit in front of a fan to dry it. A few years back, I wanted a short haircut to try and get a style that fit my curls; one that I could use the curling iron for big voluminous curls. I had warned my hairdresser about my curls for years. But she didn't believe my hair was curly because it is very fine and it blows out very easily. But as she cut it, my curls sprang. The more she tried to react to the springing curls, the more they tightened and the shorter my hair was. I ended up with a pixie and what looked like my grandmother's pin curls. I wanted to buy a wig, but suffered through with relaxers until I could straighten it again. As it grew out, I did get to the point that a curling iron worked great and gave me the style I wanted. I finally looked like I had a thick head of curls. But even that fried my hair. This summer I have been trying to let it go natural again. But I always end up blowing it out because it's not full enough and my curls are thin. I also have 2c, 3a curls. But mine look like those ramen noodles people talk about. They don't clump, but curl into stringy curls. My hair's length is midway to my bra strap when straight, and shrinks to my shoulders when curled. Is it because my hair is so fine? Do you have any suggestions to improve the volume? Do you think my curls will clump more as my hair gets healthier? I'm not sure if it is worth going through the transition, if all I will end up with is a head full of Ramen noodles and a hard time going back to straightening it or curling it with heat. Once given freedom, it's hard to tame my curls into submission again. LOL

Hi Susie- I just found your channel and I’m really enjoying it. I too have curly wavy hair. It’s similar to yours but slightly looser curls in the back. I am jumping around using deva curl products and the Acure pumpkin seed and argan oil shampoo and conditioner from Whole Foods. As far as gels, I’m trying out the Curl enhancing gel from Amika . Not sure yet what I think. Is the Bioterra gel you use a generic gel similar to the Biolage Gelee? They look very similar. I would love to try the Down Under Naturals Nude Coconut conditioner but only Walmart in Canada sells it and with tax and added shipping fees it comes to $16. 😩

I've been a flat ironer for years and years now and I leave it curly on days when I'm in a hurry but I still like mine way better straight because I got bangs back in 2007 and I am still in love with them. However, it's hard for them to look right with my coils.
Curly hair looks Awesome on you though! I just don't have strong enough facial features for it to look as good on me.

I totally get that last minute, regain-a-sense-of-control bleaching impulse. Sometimes we have to ruin things one last time to be sure we're committed I guess!
This past and the last year I went from a huge haircut to get rid of length that had been bleached blonde, dyed red, then dyed black (during an on off nightmare relationship where I was being critiqued about my looks and compared to other women and that is the least bad of it too, ugh... Every time I dyed my hair I thought it might change me enough that I could either get away from him and turn a new leaf with someone kinder, or have a focus other than him, or be accepted by him... ugh!!)
This was around when I finally started getting my life back, the ex wouldnt talk to me anymore which felt traumatizing at the time but it saved my life.
The remaining black over bleached red length faded out to a match to my natural medium brown. ... which I then subjected to the keratin-ammonia blowout so I wouldn't have to think about it....
It started to grow out and get healthier, but the waves and curls (2b,c, and some 3a, which I didn't know at the time) were coming back and I felt mad at it so....
Bleach. 3 times. Low lift, I was trying to do 'natural' highlights but all it did was utterly destroy my freakin hair. I was mad that it was even frizzier and one day as I was defeatedly plugging in my overused flat iron, the iron shorted out. I didn't know what to do, budget wouldn't allow for a new one any time soon.
My therapist had recently challenged me to be loving to myself and as I was standing there wondering what that meant in this context, I suddenly realized.
That's when I just decided to accept my hair and learn how to take care of it. I cut even more off, I have a longish *bowl cut* right now almost haha, NOT the most flattering cut on me.... but my curls began to live again. And I finally know how to take care of them. By extension I am being challenged to apply a similar level of love to the rest of my being, and my life. .. again, finally.

My sister and I didn't realize we had curly hair until we were in high school because growing up our mom would always brush our hair so that's what we did and just thought we were cursed with frizzy hair! I am guilty of flat ironing my hair too much in the past few years, but it fits so much easier into my motorcycle helmet. No more heat!

Hi Susie! Can you try the dippity do girls with curls anti frizz gelee. I just started the curly girl method and i found it at walmart. I am loving it so far. Sulfate silicone alcohol and paraben free! They have other products in this line too but they are not curly girl approved. I am currently using the curl gelee and co wash which are curly girl approved!

6:19 I love your hair! I wish I have your texture too. I'm planning to go back to my naturally curly hair this August (less hassle) after a year of flat ironing it and I don't know what to expect! Will I see a difference after a week of not flat ironing it? Or do I need 3 months to notice something? Thanks!
