At the beginning…..someone yells “Let’s GO!” That was Bonzo!
This song was written & recorded in about 20 minutes, Bonham was getting frustrated with trying to get Four Sticks down. Four Sticks was Bonham playing with 2 sticks in each hand, plus the timing. He took a break & started pounding this out on the drums, & we got 2 songs instead of just one. They played this or The Immigrant song, to start off many of their concerts, it got the fans ready to Rock & Roll. Thank you again for your reaction.

You mentioned that this was “new” in its time. Actually, being 1971 when this song was released, it’s a throwback to the rock and roll that these guys grew up with in the 50’s and early 60’s. There are references in this song to lyrics from older songs. “it’s been a long time since “The Book of Love” It’s been a long time since A Walk in the Moonlight.
And the main clue: “It’s been a long time since we rock and rolled.” It’s been a long time since we did The Stroll (a dance from the late 50’s)

It’s nostalgia for old time rock and roll. By the late 60’s, rock and roll was already in the past as a generally popular genre of music, replaced by folk rock, psychedelic rock, blues rock, pop rock, prog rock and hard rock. Zeppelin did all these styles very well. This song is a sweet little homage to the music of their childhoods. ( snd mine)

Exactly. The 1950's music was the music they listened to and made it their own. I personally love the music of the 50's. If you listen to it from the perspective of it being the first wave of rock, it' must have been mind-blowing. It's also just FUN music.
This is the perfect song to open a concert with. Lots of energy to get the crowd pumped.

Yah, this is the Zeppelin equivalent of a "fluff" song. No deep musical statement, just a standard head-bang simple party tune. It's just fun and meant to be fun without too much examination.
Every time the camera holds on Plant, girl gets just a little googly-eyed. She's wondering: "Where are the guys like that today?" 😂

I always imagine what it would be like to be front row, hands on the stage, or even in the middle of the packed crowd. Concerts in the 70's were a lot different than today. No cellphones, it was more communal and for the experience to be there and enjoy the music.
I went to see them at MSG in 1973.

I grew up when they were together and yes we were overwhelmed by them. Their music is timeless and is still better then anything that comes out today. The 2nd most rousing performance of this song was Heart covering it when I saw them at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ, on August 16th, 1977. They closed their show that night with it and dedicated it to the King. It was the day Elvis died.
I saw Heart in 1980 and was blown away when they played this. And rocked it, by the way.

This song allegedly was written to celebrate the 16th birthday of rock and roll, as many consider the beginning of the genre to have been in 1955.
This was the way they started their shows. The lights went out, no announcements, then strobe lights and a 5 hour trip. ❤

They transform this iconic rock song into an orchestral masterpiece! Brought Robert Plant to tears, both for the performance and seeing John Bonham's son Jason at the drums!
Yeah, this song was just put together in a few minutes in the studio to release tension. Think of it as just a little tidbit of what is to come, and a nice way for them, especially Robert, to warm up for much greater things to come.

A couple of suggestions for you. Trampled Under Foot live for “sensory overload “ in a good way or The Lemon Song for a great bass line. Any song is great!
It's actually a fairly standard 12 bar blues / rock number, but of course, in the hands of Led Zep, still pretty awesome.
Nowhere near as awesome as the C minor blues that is 'Since I've been loving you'. Guys, check out the studio version of that - it's quite different from the live performance, which you've reacted to.
It is based on the original raw rock & roll vibe of the 1950s with more amps and Marshall Amps here

A good Zep song for when you're not feeling particularly energetic and or perhaps even a bit melancholy, two songs that I usually turn to, and that I highly recommend, are Ten Years Gone or The Rain Song (studio versions), not live. Please. Now, I'm probably going to get slammed for what I'm about to say. So be it. This song, Rock & Roll, is actually is the lower third of my favorites by them 😬 Love your reactions, and keep up the great work. I better get into hiding now!

The wuss (jokingly) drummer I was in a cover band with in the early 80's refused to open with this song. Said he needed to be really warmed up before playing it because Bonzo was so difficult to copy. Fair enough, whenever he did get around to playing it later in the night he always kicked a$$! Nah...pretty sure they opened most 71 and 72 with "Immigrant" and R&R for 73 tour but I THINK "Song remains the same" for 75 and 77. could be wrong but i know it wasnt only r&r for all those years, though it WAS Rock and Roll, if you take my meaningf!
OK. I'm a huge Led Zeppelin fan and (in my opinion) the best version of "Kashmir" is their live version from the 2007 Celebration Day concert in London's O2 Arena. I believe this is the last time the boys played together as Led Zeppelin. Of course, the drummer was Jason Bonham, who filled in for his late father John. Except for Jason, the guys were advanced in age, but they still rocked it big time. I love this version of "Kashmir" and it is a MUST for every Led Zeppelin fan to watch. This one's one of my favorite Zeppelin songs. Fast and rocks hard. I got to see Page and Plant when I was 19 years old on their No Quarter tour in '95 and was soooo hoping they would play it but they didn't. Bummer. Glad I got to see them though.

I know you two have reacted to Kashmir and I have a request...Kashmir - Live - Celebration Day Concert. They are all near 60 yrs of age for this concert and have Jason Bonham, son of John Bonham, on drums.
Unlike many of these live performances, that stays fairly true to the studio version. And the reason is, obviously, because you don't want to kick off a show with a long meandering piece. It also demonstrates just how much variety they could draw on when putting together a set-list.

Carol, when you are in the mood, please listen to the original studio recording, Roberts vocals are through the roof. It was originally recorded for the fourth album released in 1971 that also has Stairway and Black Dog. I prefer the studio version! ❤️

I know you two like the 70s era of rock--as do I--but just keep in mind that rock has had a lot of eras and styles. The 90s were a true golden age that rivaled the 70s. (Having grown up with 70s rock, I feel rather ashamed to admit it, but the 90s may have been the best decade of rock ever.) The songs were even more hard hitting and powerful. Some of the best songs ever came out of the 90s. If you plan to start out with the older stuff first, that's a great idea and I would encourage you to do so with the intention of moving through the eras. But if you happen just to not be aware of what's out there, thought I would mention it.

Elie, if you want real “rock and roll” you need to go back in time a bit from 1970….back to the late 50’s and early 60’s. Listen to Chuck Berry, Lil’ Richard, Elvis, The Big Bopper etc.

Volume is low. When listening to Zep it should be so loud your ears almost bleed.
You should really listen to the studio versions of these songs first. Led Zeppelin in the studio were masters.

Dang! RP changed the melody to a lower register! I can see why - singing the original melody night after night on tour would potentially make you lose your voice. But I sure prefer the higher melody. Way less exciting version here.
That's funny that she said this is her least favorite of what she's heard, among Zeppelin fans that's a pretty typical attitude. Among my circle it's rock and roll and hats off to Roy Harper, the two least amazing Zeppelin songs. To be clear they don't have a bad song, but if you're going to rank them this is pretty simply down near the bottom.
