Beck, Blackmore, Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn were/are all amazing guitarists, but how many hits did they write? Sure, they had some hits, but most were written by someone else, and none can touch what Page with Zeppelin did.
YES🤟awesome. Best ever band in the world. Reaches into my soul . I live in kidderminster U.K.. Plant is the most kind friendly man you could meet. He always has respect and time to chat. Masters on and off stage . True musicians, true gentlemen
My son listens to rap mostly, I introduced him to zep and now every time I go visit he plays me a new zep song on guitar. All these years later they are still winning fans with the music. Greatest band of all time. And just a side note you remind me of a young Paige!!!
One of my favorite bands, they had it goin' on. Funny how the audience is so calm, little did they know they were watching & listening to history being made.
Jimmy Page was the master of riff writing. Taking the whole lotta love riff for an example, there is a bend which takes that part of the riff to a discordant siren like tone which is total genius in my humble opinion. Without it the riff would not have its magic. There are other awesome things going on in the whole lotta love riff that are well worth exploring.
As far as being the master riff writer, I have to go with Keith Richards. I think Led Zep were great, but they could not have written Monkey Man or Midnight Rambler, to name a few. On the other hand, K.R. could not have written Fool In The Rain. It's a harsh world out there...
@@zanichbug ok so your a big stones fan, but you shouldn't lose the reality of music..Stones a very popular commercial blues based band, almost a pop band at times...KR riffs were all closely related and very simple...but catchy ..ar times...Keith Richard's is not known as a great writer of riffs, and could never be compared to Jimmy's.......btw Ronnie wood has always ben the best guitarist in the stones, since the death of Brian jones..😉
@@kensalazar5066 Not sure what you mean by "the reality of music" since I have a substantial vinyl collection of Bowie, Stones, Led Zep, Roxy, the Who, Hendrix...The Stones only had two guitarists after Jones died: Taylor, and Wood. In my own book: Taylor was a great fit as a guitarist, and Wood is a great fit as a Stone. One important bit, in my opinion, is that Taylor happened to be in the band during the prime writing years of M&K.
@@stephenzanichkowsky4434 sounds good, and I'm not trying to offend you or any other stones fans..theys bigger than most, and bigger than I'll ever be for sure....I just don't belive that the are talented musicians in the same realm as some of the other big bands of the day..they did however write some great songs, but the music is mostly simple...still song writing was their talent and they were good at it...the thing that I admire most about the stones is that they have endured, through everything and most don't, although most of their music is only known to die hard stones fans..and I guess at the end of the day....there's quite a few....no doubt...I'm just not one of them...I love there popular stuff....for sure early songs like under the thumb, sympathy...etc...
It may indeed blow, in your view, but many of your rock idols idolize some of today's artists. Many big names who you no doubt love, love Lady Gaga, for example, and consider her to be among the tops of the tops. You might not. But they do. I remember the days when people hated the Beatles, saying no way can they be compared to Elvis. But Elvis liked them, as did lots of big stars who's fans didn't appreciate the Bs.
Once again, enjoyed the analysis greatly, thanks. I was at this show. Zeppelin were massive at the time, but the legend, the mystique, had not yet fully grown. The longer I live, the more I appreciate gigs like this, and how lucky I was to be around in that era. Like Joni said........"you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone". Peace.............
One stand out is John Paul Jones 's solid bass playing you can hear his unmatched skill when he locks in with drummer John Bonham and carries his impeccable rythmn work most notably covering guitarist Jimmy Page 's lead solo when he covers the absence of rythmn guitar
I was at this performance at the old Sydney Showground in 1972 as an 18 year old. First and best concert I have even attended. They were great and as Fil says, had all the energy and tone of their records.
Fil, I dig your analysis. You're such a fan of music and its various genres and it comes through on your videos. Keep up the good work my friend. P.S. John Paul Jones was, in my opinion, the best musician in a band of 4 incredible musicians. Jimmy Page is the Riff Master General.
Yeah, back when Jimmy was writing, the great guitar riffs were not all written. Now? You can't write a single note intro riff without someone going oh, that sounds like Zep or Van Halen or whoever. Page wrote a lot of hit riffs. Eddie V wrote a few himself. Wish they'd zoomed in a bit on Page in the solo but again.... we both know that the true cameraman's job is to film the singer during the guitar solo. :)
Great analysis Fil. I've always been very impressed with how Page could break away from the rhythm and play leads, solos that were usually over dubs on the studio versions. I suppose Jimmy has Bonham and definitely JPJ to thank for filling in the gaps so well. Other bands like The Stones, Allmans, Skynyrd had both a rhythm and lead guitarist on stage. Jimmy Page carried the load very well. And with the heaviest band around in those days to boot.
Funny that all 3 of the biggest hard rock bands in the early 70’s were all single guitar. Deep Purple had Jon Lord often basically playing his fuzzed out organ as if it were a guitar, and even though Black Sabbath was by far the heaviest of those bands and by proxy probably the heaviest yet heard back then, but still just Tony Iommi. I think he used to compensate during his solos by hitting bass notes and low octaves to fill out the sound on stage.
John Paul Jones was unappreciated in this band. He played keyboards Mandolin and bass! Seems like people aren't aware of this! Saw Zepplin 3 times! Always a great performance! Great review and analysis Fil! Thanks again.
Zep did a lot of great music and albums but this piece is by far my favorite because it's just had that raw edginess to it, that you never forget. Those guys have to be, at least in my mind, one of the top 3 greatest rock groups of all time. And quite arguably number one.
Thanks fil. Love that you appreciate any style of music and can analyse and interpret it so well. You have turned me on to stuff I would never have come across. Cheers
Spot on critique as usual.Covering all the aspects so well.Really is amazing how close it is to the studio version being live......and like you said ....with 3 players?!?!?Incredibly incredible.
Bit late but a great live version by Zeppelin is Achilles last stand from the 79 knebworth gig, I was their and couldn't believe it when Page managed to play that on his own! I can't think of another guitar player who could have done it without backing tracks and/or another guitarist on stage as back up..
Greatest rhythm section by a mile. I've never heard a live recording where Jones and Bonzo weren't sensational. I listen to some of that late 60s and early 70s live stuff, and there are so many moments that are just jaw-dropping. Plant and Bonzo in particular could put explosive energy into their performances. Around the mid 70s, Page started having sobriety issues and Plant's vocal chords were a bit worn. Still a great singer, just no longer the Viking Sex God vocals.
That analysis was really good and I'm going to watch it a few more times, I agree it's a really good performance. You really brought to light the energy that this band puts out with just three musicians and one lead vocalist. I'm not a big Plant fan in terms of vocals, but I have to agree he really did this one well. You really have to have a lot of presence on stage when there's only a few of you, and Plant has that talent, he really owns the stage, it's not easy to do when the others are playing solos, you need to do something to keep the audience interested. Although when the camera panned the audience at one point, I thought they were all on valium. Also watched your Rory one that was good too. Keep up the good work!
Yeah, I think he got a bit of a reputation for sloppiness later on when he was having various problems. Some musicians seem to thrive under the influence of drugs/booze/whatever, but I feel Page only suffered really. Hard work mixed with hard living almost ruined his reputation as one of THE greatest guitar players of all time. But his legacy lives on for all to see and appreciate.
Jimmy got quite sloppy in the late 70's and 80's due to that heroin shit . But , that said , he was always into improvising his solos to make them new and different for us and him .
Yeah, he wasn’t sloppy in the early years of the band, but he was later in the decade. I saw Led Zeppelin in LA during their 1977 tour, and Page was definitely struggling at times with the more virtuosic passages. I’m glad I got to see them, though.
Dude, you nailed it. Zep was essentially a power trio and the fact that page could pull off the depth of sound in both lead and rhythm was what marked then as the best live band ever.
@@gregormiller4037 To me, JMO, I was listening to Physical Graffiti on a portable turntable. I grew up with Zeppelin, Bad Co, Sabbath, Trower, and as much as I love James Dewar's voice I still think Plant is best. I love Jethro Tull also! Saw him/them at The Spectrum in Philly. ✌🏼🎶

I can't be the only person who thinks you look like Page in his younger years. There ain't no WAY I'm the first to type that! Now that I've got that out of the way.....LOL Just found your channel and enjoying it. Thanks and cheers!
This video is SOOooo cool, the shows in '72 were relatively still "tame" in terms of audience behavior, band behavior, stage access to fans & just the no frills aspect of the stage setup. Your knowledge from the musician's viewpoint is astounding....I only saw LZ once but it was epic. As much as I love Plant's voice & ability, to this day he just can't dance w/ good timing. lol Jimmy Page, the consummate gentleman & fantastic guitar man.
These daylight shows with a big stage dwarfs the band. They look like a little four piece hippie band. But they play & it sounds larger than life. Like Zeus,Thor, Poseidon & Apollo are here & they wanna party with you! Thanks Fil I love Led Zeppelin🤘
I think your analysis of live vs. record is very astute. One of the great things about Zeppelin was their ability to track most everything live, in studio. Then Page would go back and wing the leads on overdub (just a few times and pick the best), or Plant on the harmonies. Their live performances changed every show so they knew each other's rhythm pretty well. Especially.during these years.
Hi Fil, have you ever listened to the Page&Plant cd ( ? ) No Quarter? Saw them when they toured for that, what a wonderful concert! When they played at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee,I was sooo impressed with that concert, the next day had to buy the cd. A remake of some old songs with some new material with an Egyptian orchestra with the violins and the other instruments that would be found in same. And that was the most impressive thing to listen to the cd the next day! It was like being at the concert again, only I had to really turn it up at home cuz I'm was still kinda in the hard of hearing mode from the night before :) have a good 'un Fil ! Please give it a listen, just for yer'self !
I saw. P & P in Pittsburg. They were very good. I saw Plants Now and Zen tour. I was very close. He was fantastic. He did hey hey what can i do. Highlight for me.
All so you are right Jimmy is known for riffing but it is his rhythm playing that is the foundation of his greatness he really is a one man band producing writing playing a forward vision what he might lack in technique he more than makes up for it in the fact he wears so many hats been following him for 42 years and still love his style of course the other members of the band are very talented as well cheers
I have 2 bands up there. Really up there and it's of cause Led Zep and Pink Floyd. But I've come to appreciate Leds music more and more every time I hear them. Especially live. And I've been listening to both of them for at least 30 of my 48 years. Plants vocals is a given but to really dig into J P Js bass or Bonham going at it... Pages guitar... Amazing. Timeless
My mother barely tolerated Queen. I had to listen to led Zeppelin alone in the car driving in the country. Little did Mom know that one day led Zeppelin would be honored by President Obama at the Kennedy center honors.
This is exactly why I don't want to see a LZ reunion. You just can't reproduce this 45 years later. I saw the new Clint Eastwood movie "The Mule" tonight. Good movie. But there comes a time when to call it a day.
This may be the greatest reaction I've ever witnessed .😊❤ The understanding. The articulation. The musical information. Incredible. And i loved that Zeppelin performance which i also had never seen.
I'm always more impressed by bands who manage to recreate the mood of their quiet songs live. It's so much harder to do. Led Zeppelin could do that, of course, which is why I'd prefer it if you could show, say, one of their acoustic numbers. Rock 'n Roll, although deceptively simple, is one of those songs you can just belt out. As long as you get the groove going, there's really not that much to it. Which is why it's such a fun song to play. No tricky bits.
ZZ TOP in the early day were a fantastic 3 piece band. La Grange and Jesus just left Chicago ! It's amazind what a great bass layer brings to the show. Ask Van Halen.
Page often gets a lot of grief from younger fans for playing " sloppy". And it is true that when drugs came into his life he wasn't always on. Add that to a tour in the mid 70's where he played with a broken finger and you will have some sub par performances. But you hit it right on the head, as usual. He was doing EVERYTHING. And some LZ songs are VERY technical. Plus he liked to improvise every night. Just an amazing player and the most complete player I ever seen. Just no style he couldn't do and he was fearless. This is the most powerful band, all things considered, in history. They set the bar and then kept raising it. The best ever, at all positions! Thanks for sharing!

Wow, that was great! Thanks Fil. I was able to see Zeppelin a few times, during their 1975 & 1977 USA tours. That era was filled with so many guitar-driven, super talented bands. I recall a show, at Long Island's (NY) Nassau Coliseum, where I saw Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and John McLaughlin, all on the same bill! It was in 1975 I believe. The three guitarists came out and did a mammoth jam at the end of the show...phenomenal!!! And Zep were amazing. The 2/14/1975 show is still being talked about amongst Led Zep fans and tape collectors and I was there! I was just a kid and so lucky to have grown up during that era. Seeing the Mighty Zep that first time...still gives me chills thinking about it to this day. The house lights going down, the band coming onstage, hearing them tuning up...and then *WHAM* 3 hours of bliss...people going NUTS! What a great time. Thanks for reviewing this Fil. Love your videos. BTW how does someone submit a video to you for a possible analysis? Would love to see you do one on Roy Buchanan, but don't have the link handy. Thanks again. Rock N Roll!

👍
The holy grail of rock bands...the greatest of all time!
I agree. He pulls that drone lick on the Four Sticks rhythm too. One of his many killer tricks
I'm 58...been a Zep fan since about age 13.
Today's music blows dog! 👅🐕👅

other than Tool yeah

It may indeed blow, in your view, but many of your rock idols idolize some of today's artists. Many big names who you no doubt love, love Lady Gaga, for example, and consider her to be among the tops of the tops. You might not. But they do. I remember the days when people hated the Beatles, saying no way can they be compared to Elvis. But Elvis liked them, as did lots of big stars who's fans didn't appreciate the Bs.
Um, Whale !
Cool!
Led Zeppelin's stage presence was off the charts
@@MasterTapes1960 yep off the charts with sloppiness
Great to hear a young healthy plant. 71-72 was his peak when it comes to sounding like the LP or the “Led Zeppelin” voice
Zep kills it live or studio like few ever could. Excellent live raw grind!
One stand out is John Paul Jones 's solid bass playing you can hear his unmatched skill when he locks in with drummer John Bonham and carries his impeccable rythmn work most notably covering guitarist Jimmy Page 's lead solo when he covers the absence of rythmn guitar
Jonesy ❤️
I was at this performance at the old Sydney Showground in 1972 as an 18 year old. First and best concert I have even attended. They were great and as Fil says, had all the energy and tone of their records.
Cool!
I was there too - loved it.
Thanks!
Led Zeppelin = Pure Energy. Live they exploded on the stage !!
👍
Great analysis Fil. I've always been very impressed with how Page could break away from the rhythm and play leads, solos that were usually over dubs on the studio versions. I suppose Jimmy has Bonham and definitely JPJ to thank for filling in the gaps so well. Other bands like The Stones, Allmans, Skynyrd had both a rhythm and lead guitarist on stage. Jimmy Page carried the load very well. And with the heaviest band around in those days to boot.
👍
Funny that all 3 of the biggest hard rock bands in the early 70’s were all single guitar. Deep Purple had Jon Lord often basically playing his fuzzed out organ as if it were a guitar, and even though Black Sabbath was by far the heaviest of those bands and by proxy probably the heaviest yet heard back then, but still just Tony Iommi. I think he used to compensate during his solos by hitting bass notes and low octaves to fill out the sound on stage.
I saw them at Earls court 1975 - when I got home my mates asked how they sounded - my words at the time 'like the record on a massive record player' .
John Paul Jones was unappreciated in this band. He played keyboards Mandolin and bass! Seems like people aren't aware of this! Saw Zepplin 3 times! Always a great performance! Great review and analysis Fil! Thanks again.
We all love and appreciate him ❤️
Zep did a lot of great music and albums but this piece is by far my favorite because it's just had that raw edginess to it, that you never forget. Those guys have to be, at least in my mind, one of the top 3 greatest rock groups of all time. And quite arguably number one.
👍
Thanks fil. Love that you appreciate any style of music and can analyse and interpret it so well. You have turned me on to stuff I would never have come across. Cheers
👍☺
Spot on critique as usual.Covering all the aspects so well.Really is amazing how close it is to the studio version being live......and like you said ....with 3 players?!?!?Incredibly incredible.
👍
Bit late but a great live version by Zeppelin is Achilles last stand from the 79 knebworth gig, I was their and couldn't believe it when Page managed to play that on his own! I can't think of another guitar player who could have done it without backing tracks and/or another guitarist on stage as back up..
That is one of my favorite performance to look at him there ; he didn't look very healthy but damn he was great.
Page is Rock´n´Roll in this ... seldom have I seen him this spontaneous and just raving !
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts....apparently Aristotle envisioned LZ! 🤘
😂👍
And certainly The Beatles, as well!
Thanks!
I have heard a lot of people call Page sloppy. I don't think they could really hear what he is doing.
Absolutely. I still find things buried in their music that I had missed for years. Amazing!
Yeah it's always a discussion but certainly the substances had a negative affect.
Thanks!
Fil, in my opinion this is THE greatest Rock n Roll band of all time. Robert Plant's voice was his instrument.....
Rock! 🤙🏼🎶❤
No Jethro Tull?

Here's Plant,,, Oooooooooooooooooo ya
@@gregormiller4037 To me, JMO, I was listening to Physical Graffiti on a portable turntable. I grew up with Zeppelin, Bad Co, Sabbath, Trower, and as much as I love James Dewar's voice I still think Plant is best. I love Jethro Tull also! Saw him/them at The Spectrum in Philly. ✌🏼🎶
Ree McLaughlin except that stole a good many songs...just ask Spirit.
I just LOVE your reactions and incisive commentary. And watching your face when you are enjoying a performance is a joy; you have an infectious smile. All strength to you! xxx

Fil, this has to be your ultimate favorite band!!!!
Wow, 1st seeing this video, incredible!! Led Zeppelin is one of the bands that you can take any track today, and it sounds so much better than when it first came out, they just put to shame any Rock today.
👍
I’ve always wondered where this was from. I’ve seen brief clips used before but never the whole video.
Such a simple stage.
👍
Been missing my Wings of Pegasus. Broke my device. It's been along time..... Zepplin blew me away as a teenager and still does
👍
The greatest band EVER! My favorite.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Brilliant video! Jimmy does an excellent job filling everything out on his own. It’s not easy to do. His left hand is cold and it’s bother him but he’s pulling it off. I used to keep my hands warm a par can. I bought a chunk of Zepps lighting rig and control gear many years ago. (I wish I still had it) I love this band. As a teenager I used to idolise Jimmy Page. I used to even look like him. Lol! Your videos are brilliant Fil! Thanks!
Thanks!
Anytime I can see John Boham live is special to me, none better. Thx Fil.
Amen.
Bonham really beats the hell out of the drums... Great drummer...
John Paul's driving bass rhythm lead..
Jimmy was a studio musician everybody would use him on thier tracks... One of the greatest of all time.. He bought allister crawley castle.."demonic...
Vocalizations amazing..Plants the man.. "72" we were drinking keggers hanging on the corner dancing in the Street to some of the best music ever made...
One of the best band's of all time...
👍
What a grand performance! Truly one of the great bands of all times!
👍
What great vocals!
👍
Jimmy.Page is light yrs from most of the great.players. Being able to play all types of music is a quality that few can do.
Another great job Fil...keep up the good work🎸
I own nearly everything they put out, along with millions of others in the US where they rank in the top 5 all time.
You mentioned about Page filling in cause of not having a rhythm guitar however listen to the rhythm section Bonham and Jones.
My first concert at 16 (1976) Zeppelin, Greensboro, NC. My favorite band of all time. The beginning of my love for concerts. Feel so fortunate to have been a part of 70’s music. Like no other.
This is fantastic! If you’re ever in the States and need a place to stay, and a tour of Nashville...Hit me up, brother!😄
Haha thanks!
with a name like crackhack, what could possibly go wrong lol
Yayyy! I WAS THERE! My 1st gig evvvah!
Parts of the concert are on the Mothership DVD (remember those?), including the start - Immigrant Song. Still get goose bumps thinking about it now.
I was 11 then. The ground SHOOK!
IMO, THE greatest hard rock band ever. Amazingly, Robert Plant still has the chops. If you get a chance, go see him.
👍
Surprisingly good audio Fil. I expected it to be pretty flat when I saw it was outdoors. You found a gem!
☺👍
These daylight shows with a big stage dwarfs the band. They look like a little four piece hippie band. But they play & it sounds larger than life. Like Zeus,Thor, Poseidon & Apollo are here & they wanna party with you! Thanks Fil I love Led Zeppelin🤘
No problem!
Cool!
I saw. P & P in Pittsburg. They were very good. I saw Plants Now and Zen tour. I was very close. He was fantastic. He did hey hey what can i do. Highlight for me.
I saw Page and Plant in 1996 in Rio de Janeiro. Great version of this song as you can see: ua-cam.com/video/MIpefL5rgNQ/v-deo.html
I just love your insight! I love Zeppelin...there is no better...no better guitarist than Jimmy!!
Little did Mom know that one day led Zeppelin would be honored by President Obama at the Kennedy center honors.
my fav parts of jimmy's solo's are the flat tires . So much feel even blowing a note . LOVE
👍
This is exactly why I don't want to see a LZ reunion. You just can't reproduce this 45 years later. I saw the new Clint Eastwood movie "The Mule" tonight. Good movie. But there comes a time when to call it a day.
Oh yeah, they absolutely definitely connect!! Pure magic!
it's really true and there was no overdubs or electronic bullshit
I know cauase I saw it first hand
This may be the greatest reaction I've ever witnessed .😊❤ The understanding. The articulation. The musical information. Incredible. And i loved that Zeppelin performance which i also had never seen.
Jimmy Page!!!
Great review Fil. All this before super sound systems and massive light shows.
My favorite band ✌🏼❤️🤘🏼
I'm always more impressed by bands who manage to recreate the mood of their quiet songs live. It's so much harder to do.
Led Zeppelin could do that, of course, which is why I'd prefer it if you could show, say, one of their acoustic numbers.
Rock 'n Roll, although deceptively simple, is one of those songs you can just belt out. As long as you get the groove going,
there's really not that much to it. Which is why it's such a fun song to play. No tricky bits.
Yeah it's difficult with the copyrights to do much Zepp!
ZZ TOP in the early day were a fantastic 3 piece band. La Grange and Jesus just left Chicago ! It's amazind what a great bass layer brings to the show. Ask Van Halen.
👍
Hi Fil, your fascinatin for music was catching me from the first minute. I learn so much about the bands, that's amazing, also in Corona times!
No problem!
I guess I'm not knowledgeable enough to tell he ever sounded sloppy.
Saw Zeppelin in 1977 at Madison Square Garden! Sounded unbelievable! Still remember the whole show 🔥🔥🔥! 7th row center 👏👏
Cool!
I attended 2 live Led Zeppelin performances in the 70s.
They were a great band because each member was
great and their chemistry was infectious.
Love the way that you get into songs and how you explain what's going on.Rock

Led Zep were incredible and no one did what they did at that time. They were one of those rare bands with no weaknesses as in each member was a virtuoso player of the highest standard. What was amazing about Page was how even when he was totally stoned on stage ( Which was a lot!) his playing was always note perfect. I guess the same could be said for Bonham as well.... legendary band!!
