This song simply shows why Bonham was the greatest rock drummer. Nobody could fill or change the beat on the fly like he could.

When someone asks me why they're my all-time favorite group, this is what I tell them. These guys were only Led Zeppelin for 12 years! Their catalog isn't a rabbit hole it's a whole tunnel to the center of the earth. They crossed over into different genres, sometimes multiple genres in one song. There have been groups, bands and artists who couldn't do in 30 years what these guys did in 12. They are on a whole other level!

The story behind this song is they were in the recording studio recording another song, Four Sticks. Bonham was frustrated with getting the beat down and broke out with Little Richard drum beat and the rest of the band jumped in. This was the result.

Unbridled pure energy. Man if you guys listen to this again definitely crank it up to the highest volume you can possibly tolerate because that's what it was meant to be like. Crank it until your eardrums bleed basically, lol. And then start dancing to it but do it like head banging. This song is all about that head banging feeling.

The piano is played by Ian Stewart, a founding member of The Rolling Stones who was also that band's road manager for many years...One of those rare songs that even after you've heard it a billion times over forty years, you still get excited when it comes on the radio...

Great song. I'd suggest 'Good Times, Bad Times' next. The tune that opens the first album introducing us all to this awesome band. It had us reaching for the volume to turn it up! I almost got to see them in 1972 but they were canceled after the riot at the Rolling Stones concert the week before. At least I saw that one. (June 3, 1972.). Cheers.

The Rain Song is a slower song but it's so beautifully written. It's one of those songs where you can sit back and close your eyes and just go wherever your mind takes you. That's just a handful of songs out of an incredible catalogue.

They were trying to record Four Sticks, in which Bonzo actually used 4 sticks, and he was getting frustrated and went into Little Richard’s “Keep A Knockin”. The tape was rolling, and they wrote the majority of “Rock and Roll” then and there.

Thanks guys for doing my pick!.... Some suggest you listen to the live '73 MSG performance. I was at that show and its iconic BUT I thought it important you hear the studio version first... Robert Plant's vocal performance on the fourth album is mind blowing!... He gave it his all for the live shows in '73 and did the best he could, but sorry never again could he do what he did when this song was first recorded and I felt you needed to hear that first... Rock on!

If you haven't reacted to Kashmir, you should. A Reporter mentioned to both Robert Plant and Jimmy Page that "Stairway to Heaven" must be Led Zepplin's definitive song. They both disagreed and said Kashmir is that song. It's Plant and Page's favorite Led Zepplin song. I would like to know what you two think.

  • @Kneedragon1962

The story of this is fascinating, and tells you a whole lot about the who and what and how of Led Zeppelin ~ why they were the greatest ever rock n roll band. They were trying to record another song, I think it was 4 sticks, and Bonzo kept making minor mistakes with the drumming, and he got angry and went off on a little rif of his own, having a minor tanty, something that had a very conventional rock n roll beat to it, and after a few bars, Jimmi Page shrugged and joined in, jammed with him. Then John Paul did the same, and after the first line Robert Plant started to improvise lyrics, because it was clearly about Rock n Roll. They got the basics of the song down in one take ~ completely cold, completely improvising, and to this day it remains the perfect blueprint of what a Rock n Roll song should be.
If I had to pick one song that captures who and what Led Zeppelin was, it would be Rock n Roll. I should also confess it is pretty much my favourite song. I'm about to turn 61, and I have loved this song for going on 50 years.

Rock & Roll was inspired by a Little Richard song called Keep A Knocking. Littie Richard , along with most of the classic rock and roll singers helped inspire many of the Britsh Invasion bands . A great example is the Beatles even by their name was inspired by Buddy Holly and the Crickets in their early years.

Robert and Jimmy did an MTV unplugged (without JPJ) and an album of new music together, in the 90’s. My brother, in Chicago, got tickets for us at the United Center. We were off to the side of the stage, and it “rocked”. At concerts if people stand, you often stand too to see. So, Page & Plant did some Zep’ tunes, with their band -during an encore, of “Rock and Roll” we brothers wet standing, energized by Zep’, and I get tapped on my back. This guy, with a large cup of beer (like $9 for Bud’) calls out “You and your buddy, sit down, I can’t see”. I responded “this is Led Zep’ and you’re too drunk to stand!” I told my brother the exchange after. I thought of a clip with a concert by The Who, in 1970, when Pete stopped the band for a minute, seeing a couple talking in the front row while they played. Pete called into his mic’ “this is a Rock concert, not a tea party!” 🎸😎

How could any lover of rock music not love Rock N Roll by Led Zeppelin. Just an energy monster from start to finish led by drummer John Bonham's controlled mayhem and Jimmy Page's grungy, rough-hewn guitars. Nice bass from John Paul Jones and of course urgent and flamboyant singing by the incomparable Robert Plant. You guys are just beginning your journey through the Zep wormhole - it's no stinking rabbit hole. It is not an exaggeration to say you have about 60 songs to react to as most of the tunes off their 8 studio albums and one compilation LP (Coda) are worthy of listening to. Next try Misty Mountain Hop, When The Levee Breaks, The Song Remains The Same, Houses of the Holy, The Rover, The Ocean, No Quarter and their epic, mantra-filled, psychedelic journey Kashmir. That's all just for starters.

If you haven’t done it, you should do (the studio version) of their song Achilles Last Stand. You will be blown away. For ten minutes. Another similar experience will come from In My Time Of Dying. Both masterpieces. The first is a brilliant composition. The latter is the blues churned through a Harley engine. You can’t miss with either. On both tracks, Bonham, Zeppelin’s drummer, absolutely destroys, showing why he is considered by many to be the best ever.
