  • In this food travel vlog, Trang and I eat some phở bò (beef pho) at a restaurant called Vietnamese restaurant in Binh Thanh, Saigon, Vietnam. The pho cost $2, and we decide whether or not it was worth the price, or perhaps worth more or less than that.
The exact location of the restaurant is:
    Phở Một Đô
76F Phạm Viết Chánh, Phường 19, Bình Thạnh, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh 700914

Those two bowl of pho combined would be the same size of one American bowl of pho. It will cost $16 for the bowl of pho, $3 for the drink, $2 for taxes, and $4 for the tip. That's roughly $25 for a bowl of pho with a soda on ice in America where I am at. What ever your total bill for the entire meal for two is a bargain compare to one bowl of pho in America.

@@BigTimeBentley Yes, I also live within driving distance of a place call Little Saigon with dozens of Vietnamese eateries, Vietnamese supermarkets, and other Vietnamese own businesses. $25 for a delicious giant bowl of pho with a drink in a sit down restaurant with a server is relatively not that expensive when you compare that $25 to a BigMac meal with large fries and a large soda at MacDonald's. That BigMac meal will cost you about $18 with taxes included and without tip included. We don't tip at fast food places for some reason. Which would you rather eat, a big bowl of pho or a BigMac with french fries for about the same price, if you excluded the Tip?

Not really. Street food vendors might hit and run with that, but restaurants have to display their prices. If they overcharge, they risk fines and scrutiny from market surveillance agents, which often results in more charges. Besides, their name may catch some social media winds and that can kill the business.

I used to love staying in Binh Thanh district when I come back to Saigon. For me, it has much of the perfect combination of a bohemian feel in combination with a more local flavor of life style and attitude there than any other places in Saigon. Kind of like how District 3 used to be many years ago. I love Maison de Camille Boutique Hotel. I recently checked the price on that place and its cost per night have actually been reduced by 30% from what we paid back in 2019. What a bargain to be in Saigon now, and I wish I could be there right now. Too bad there are no 30 days visa exemption for Americans, otherwise I might just go crazy and book a non-stop flight from SFO to HCMC tomorrow.

@@BigTimeBentley Yes they do, but most people like to book on the flights that stop in LAX first, because it is cheaper to fly from SFO to LAX before flying across the pacific ocean to HCMC. It is now only $1,138 for a direct flight from SFO to HCMC on Vietnam Airline for tomorrow departure. I could be in Vietnam in less than 40 hours from now if they only have a 30 days visa exemption for Americans. $1,138 is so cheap for a round trip non stop ticket to HCMC from SFO. A round trip plane ticket and two weeks hotel stay at Maison de Camille would only cost me about $400 more than if I stay at my local motel 6 for two weeks.

@@BigTimeBentley I can afford business class once in a while, but it would be such a waste of money for me to fly business class, because I tend to sleep through most of my flying time. I often sleep through my meals too, but the stewardesses were always nice enough to save it for me if I wanted to eat it later. Get yourself one of those good neck support upright sleeping device. Also get yourself some sleeping pills, and a couple of Jack and Coke drinks. You will sleep like a baby through most of the flight and save yourself the $5,000 from not buying a business class seat. I only ever flew on business class when my employer paid for it. If you don't feel the need to save $4,000 by flying economy class, fly economy anyway and donate the money saved to all the little old ladies selling lottery tickets all over Saigon. Those are some of the neediest older women I see around Saigon. edit: to add, given the owner is a northern viet dialect, Northern Style Pho is usually lighter on seasoning the broth, they specialize in a very clear clean taste and broth visually. With not a lot of condiments and toppings, while Southern Style Pho is more rich, heavy, more flavor, and typically accompanied with toppings and condiments. Good question, May loves Pho she likes to put hot chili oil and siracha because she's really tough :P But she's not picky on prices on Pho :P But Coca cola is really good with every meal so she knows i drank it :P

Working on finalizing my China Cambodia-Vietnam-Thai Trip - From Christmas 2024 till - Chinese New years. 2025 I turn 60 year of the Snake :) I would definetly pay more then what we pay in Washington DC area for a bowl- around $12 - I don't know why they don't serve the doughnut- in our area. Philadelphia does - I drive there for Viet and Cambodian Soups - Phon Phem noodle is delicious. Yes - Chinese doughnut. Legend behind the doughnut - a husband and wife were traitors to the Emperor -they were punished by being thrown in Hot oil. Why the 2 sticks are stuck together. Maybe by the time I go - You finally married that sweet young lady :) ---- I need Lime - in mine

Tyler, anyone commented on or speculating that you’ll have pretty kids over there because they’ll be mixed race? I hope that times have changed nowadays, unlike the past (or may still be present) when there were discriminations.

I've heard about this place...I may have to give it a try next time I go home. I've heard it can get pretty crowded though and there are long waits, is that true?

BTB, how would *you* rate your Vietnamese? 10th grade level, beyond? I ask because it always seems like you have no problems communicating with folks there. I'm sure there's an accent but curious if Trang thinks it's ok or if she's laughing and rolling her eyes every time you chat with a restaurant owner, getting the "Yeah, I don't know this guy" line ready if they ask.

Definitely not at a 10th grade level...more like a young elementary level. Compared to westerners here it's pretty good but there's still a lot of room for me to improve. I think Trang is proud of my ability but she would probably also say I have a lot of room for growth
