  • In this food travel vlog, I eat some cơm ba rọi heo quay (roasted pork belly rice) in Binh Thanh, Saigon, Vietnam. This local Vietnamese dish is a variation of cơm tấm (traditional Vietnamese broken rice), a very popular street food meal here in Vietnam.
I sat with a local Vietnamese man from Nghệ An province in Northern Vietnam who has been living in Saigon for the last nine years and working as a software engineer. He said he eats street food from this vendor almost every day, and he showed me how to eat this dish like a pro.
The exact location of this Vietnamese restaurant is:
    Cơm Trưa Bình Dân
    79/20 Phạm Viết Chánh
Phường 19, Bình Thạnh, Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh
I ate a full plate of delicious pork belly rice with vegetables and soup for 40k VND or $1.62.
For any foodies traveling to Vietnam, definitely try out some of this pork belly rice!
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed this food travel vlog.

Don't be suprised or upset if the locals don't immediately answer you or ignore what you just said. They just don't understand what you say (yet). We Vietnamese appreciate you taking time and effort to learn Vietnamese. Lots of foreigners living in Vietnam for a long time didn't bother to learn the language or gave up because it's too hard for them.

What I really like about Vietnam is the portion size of their meals. Basically, the meals are just a little bit bigger than a meal that you might get on an airplane or from a MacDonald's happy meal. You don't really have to watch your diet in Vietnam. All you have to do is eat 2 or 3 meals per day in Vietnamese's portion sizes, and you will never have to worry about gaining any weight. This is true only if you don't drink alcohol regularly or binge drink alcohol on the weekends. I basically lost 15 pounds after spending 3 months in Vietnam while eating what ever I wanted for 3 meals per day. I even drank a moderated amount of beers during my 3 months in Vietnam as well, and I still managed to drop 15 pounds of fats from my body. The secret is not a high carbs diet, a vegan diet, a low carbs diet, a carnivore's diet, or a Keto diet. The secret is portion sizes, and walking everyday. I did no exercises in those 3 months other than walking around while sight seeing the country of Vietnam.

I completely agree...my first few months in Vietnam I ate almost exclusively Vietnamese meals, walked a lot, and dropped like 20 pounds without any "diet" or regular exercise beyond walking

@soidoggystyle2030 unfortunately most of the street banh mi didn't come with a lot of veg but I didn't know how to ask for it due to language barrier smh

@@wed3k You can just tip the vendor a 10,000 dongs bill while points to the vegetables and herbs that you want, and then hands back the Banh Mi to the vendor. The vendor will know what to do without one word spoken. A little extra money makes everything a little easier in Vietnam.

Hi Ben. Although PM youtube channel got more subs and views but you started much later. I found your videos soothing, informative, and peaceful. PM is too eccentric 😆 haha. As a former Saigonese who has lived in California 2/3 of my life. I appreciate the flashback of my vibrant birth city . Your Saigon accent is impressive and easy to understand, so please keep talking with the locals in the Vietnamese language.
When you come back to 🇺🇲 for a visit, check out Little Saigon in Orange County and in San Jose of the Bay Area.
      Best wishes.
I am awaiting your next video.

It seems you are an easy person to strike up conversations with total strangers. That's a very good trait, especially beneficial on all your videos and many places you visit. I, too, like speaking with the locals, although my Vietnamese language is very limited. Wish I had your knack for the grasp of the language. Still I find it easy to communicate no matter the language barriers. Remembering my very early encounters during my time at Phu Bai back in '68. Continuing to enjoy your videos.

Really nice of the young man to invite you to sit with him. You're good at sparking conversation with strangers. I miss traveling overseas. Always a lot of noise, sounds, and voices. The smell of land of coming in from the sea was invigorating and told of human activity. I'm impressed at how easily you pick up the native language. I'd never be able to do it. I've tried Spanish and couldn't. So what does the rest of your day look like?

Yo Tyler, can I ask u something? How are the apartments in "Pham Viet Chanh"? (I've explored the area a bit and I think I love it). The reason I ask is cuz I m considering moving to PVC. I'm in Phu Nhuan now. But I really like PVC cuz there are local foods and western foods and bars. IMO, better then Thao Dien, plus TD is far and also expensive. Please advise.

    • @BigTimeBentley

I agree with you that PVC is more appealing than TD for a more local feel...I don't know much about the rental market here besides that I'm paying about $550 a month for an airbnb...I haven't looked at longer term rentals in this area. I have a friend who lives in this area maybe I can tour his apartment one day
