    Aw sorry to hear that you don't love 1984. I personally LOVE the ending for it because the whole book is broken up into three parts and each of the three parts follow the three methods that O'Brien talks about towards the end about re-education. (SPOLERS for anyone who has read the ending) I know the ending itself, the very last couple of pages, feels abrupt and odd, but it shows how Winston has completely stopped thinking individually and he now lives for Big Brother. Once his love for Big Brother becomes strong he will be killed (he is told this while being tortured) it is implied that as he looks up at the BB poster, he is shot in the head and the final stage is complete: the complete desire and love for Big Brother has been fulfilled. I'm a huge fan of the novel and I had a lot of great discussions while reading it as a class and since reading it I've written several papers on it. It's one of my favorite novels, but I also get that it may not be for everyone because Orwell has a very simple writing style and the middle lags a bit due to Winston and Julia's relationship.

    I've read 1984 and what I really loved about it is that post WWII George Orwell thinks about the horrors the future might hold and considering how our lives look like today, I'd say he wasn't that far off. And that is frightening.

  • @Mothballzzz
    @Mothballzzz 7 років тому +14

    In many ways, 1984 defined the genre (though Orwell borrowed much of the plot from Zamyatin's We). If you read all the contemporary dystopias first, it may be harder to appreciate, because basically you've read multiple versions of 1984 - retellings of this story, and adapted to our own current issues, obsessions and storytelling techniques. I love the ending, btw - I think it's one of the novel's strongest points, because with one sentence, it takes away all hope and leaves you with nothing but despair. Orwell is not messing around - this is a complete dystopia.
    Anyway - it's one of my fav novels, though I prefer Brave New World, because it contains elements of humor.

    I used the word "caricature" to describe Lila in Conjuring of Light too. Completely agree. Great video.

      @BookswithEmilyFox  7 років тому +2

      A lot of people seem to disagree but it really felt like she was "only" a badass female and that's it.
      During the first book she reminded me a lot of Vin from Mistborn and by the last book, you can see how different their growth is. Vin is so much more complex than Lila!

    • @shinyandteddy957
      @shinyandteddy957 7 років тому +1

      BookswithEmilyFox I agree 100%. Vin became more complex with each book. She was a 'bad ass' but more. Lila fell flat for me. There were moments I thought it could change but then she would just fall right back into 'tough as nails' even when it didn't work or make sense for the character.
      But I do love V Schwab's writing.

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  7 років тому

      I definitely like V E Schwab as a writer! I was just disappointed since I like Lila's character in the first 2 books but not in the third. Like you said, she was constantly just seen as a "tough as nails".
      Heck everyone is reacting like I bashed the book but 4 stars is really good for me (my average is low 3 this year so far!) haha

    If you’re more familiar with modern dystopian literature, I can see how 1984 might not be what you were expecting. Modern stuff tends to start with a dystopian society, but by the end of the work or series, that society has been overthrown. Older dystopian works tend to be much bleaker and far more blatantly political. I personally love early dystopian lit - Erehwon by Samuel Butler; The Fixed Period by Anthony Trollope; Herland by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Even Utopia by Thomas More raises questions about the society it describes.

    Ok, I know you mentioned Dr. House, so I'm going to throw out a recommendation that I think you'd enjoy if you like Bones. "Working Stiff" by Judy Melinek is such an interesting nonfiction read. It follows Judy, a medical examiner in NY, as well as during her time working through the 9/11 aftermath. It may sound weird, but it's full of interesting stories, and for a nonfiction, it's super entertaining.

    I totally agree with you about Holland.( if that's who you were referring to when it comes it getting the short end of the stick in regards to endings) I thought in the first books he was very two dimensional, but in a Conjuring of Light I think Victoria Schwab really upped her game and made his character so complex and heartbreaking. It got to the point where I was a TAD more interested in his flashbacks than I was in the story and I started to feel a bit disconnected from some of the characters. By the end, I was hoping for a spin off series with him? I would have bought that in a heartbeat, so I'm kind of disappointed. And yeah. With Lila she was very original and intriguing, and I still appreciated her character by the end of the series, but I think she became too much of a caricature when she got her magical powers and was just SO FANTASTIC at harnessing them in a matter of days. The best thing about her character for me was that she was scrappy and used her intelligence to get out of tough situations. That sort of went away once her powers were introduced.

    I understand how you're underwhelmed by 1984. It is a very complex book, and it can be difficult to understand. But, I do think that it is an important novel, and the overall message of the book is important, especially with times being as they are now. The ending is a bit abrupt, but I did like that it kind of leaves some part to the imagination. Winston's transition to the devoted and brainwashed follower of Big Brother is something that I think readers might feel heartbroken to read first-hand, especially with how much he believed in the resistance before being interrogated. Overall, I really enjoyed the book, and I think it's an important read, but that is my opinion. You keep being you!

    I like 1984 because of some of the quotes in there that I found really jarring. I guess it's more of a subtle dystopian but that makes it all the more creepy to me! I read A conjuring of light. I have to agree with Lila being more flat. She was my favourite character in book one and two (so witty, sharp and funny) and this was gone in this book.
    It was my fave in the series though. And I liked the little insides in all the characters, even though some of them were not really necessary for plot development. I like character driven books that also have a decent chunk of plot, so this one was my fave in the trilogy.
    And I can see where your opinion on the ending came from, but I like it now. Not everything needs to end a 100% positive or feelgood. Holland being my fave character near the end, I didn't like the ending at first, but now I do, as it shows not everything always goes the way we want it to. It is just a the ending of a war, some things cannot be turned right, because they were massively ruined earlier on.

    Hi, I just wanted to let you know- and I hope it does not come off as mean or anything, I truly just want to inform you- that 1984 was not the first dystopian novel. Brave New World, which I'm pretty sure you hauled before, was published before 1984, and there are even more books (which, yeah are less popular) that were written before that. Also, 1984 was greatly inspired by another dystopian novel, We by Yevgeny Zamyatin, again which was published before 1984, and even before Brave New World. I'm sorry to seem nit-picky, but I had written a dissertation on a topic that was concerned with dystopian literature, and I've kind of been 'protective' of it, and want to correct some of the booktube 'explanations' or discussions, I guess, of dystopian novels.
    But, apart from that, I do really like your booktube channel; you are one of the few booktubers that I not only tolerate, but enjoy watching.

      mbergie 1313 I was wondering if she understood that

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  7 років тому +1

      I thought I said "one of the first" but it doesn't change my review. Being one of the first of the genre, it wasn't what it is today so I understand why it's not more "shocking". Although the fact that it is so plausible makes it more terrifying!
      For me, it was simply one of those books that I like the idea of more than the read itself!

    • @mbergie1313
      @mbergie1313 7 років тому

      Again, it isn't really the first of the genre (I'm pretty sure the dystopian, or then called anti-utopian literature has been around since the 19th century, I might be wrong about that, but that's because of its relationship with utopian literature, which the idea of utopia has been around since Plato). It's moreso one of the more popular books within dystopia (like Fahrenheit 451). And, personally, I find it to be more shocking than the dystopias of the 2000s because, like you say, it is more plausible than, say, The Hunger Games. And, to me, I find it hard to categorize the more recent dystopias with the earlier ones...but I don't know, it's just because I've been studying them for about a year haha. I really hope I don't come off as criticizing or mean or anything; unlike other booktubers that I have watched, you at least talk about dystopian literature from before the 2000s, which I really do enjoy!

    I really disagree with what you thought about a conjuring of light. Especially about Lila, she has so much to her and I think she is one of the best female characters in modern literature. She is so strong and independent and has so many opinions. I also disagree that the endings were unfair. I think a lot of books try to make the readers happy and make everything perfect in the end, but the ending had a real-ness quality to it, and I appreciate schwab for that. I think if someone hasn't read this book, don't let this review push you away from it. (I say this with 100% respect to you and your opinions, we are not all the same and the world would be boring if we all believed the exact same things) :)

    • @BookswithEmilyFox
      @BookswithEmilyFox  7 років тому +14

      I 100% stand by my review. Lila becomes only known as being a badass fighter and nothing else. Too often this is how female characters are, just to not be the weak ones.
      Also I still think Holland's ending was very underwhelming. It didn't have to finish on a positive note but I think there still should have been more!
      Finally, 4 stars is a fantastic rating for me so nobody should take my review as a "don't read it". Especially since I said it's one of my favorite series!

    • @ExoticDreams
      @ExoticDreams 7 років тому +2

      I agree with you, and you were correct in using "one-dimensional." YA Fantasy/Sci-fi is chock full of "bad-ass" female characters who are good in a fight, but how do you differentiate them from the others? Good with a sword? Check. Good with a bow and arrow? Check. Always wins despite insurmountable odds? Check. I would love to read about more complex characters who do more than just fight well.

    'A conjouring of light' was unfortunatly quite a disappointment. It was just totally over the top at least in my opinion.
    SPOILER ALERT
    The main action happened on the foundation that there is this enormous threat and to underline the danger everyone except the protagonists have to die. Sure life is not all about sunshine and rainbows , but it became ridiculous how many side characters died just because to show the menace. So when when Kells former guard was killed by the traitorous female captain the book lost me. I just knew how it woud go on and end which totally killed any excitement for me..
    Lila actually didn't bothered me that much actually.
    In general I really liked the idea of this world(s) and the story, characters were overall really interesting and human but the third book was sadly not for me.
