Lovely snakes you have! I have 3 westerns and an eastern hognose myself. My eastern is captive bred, and actually takes f/t mice with no problems. Every now and then I have to rub a bit of toad scent on his mouse to jump-start him eating, but most days he does unscented. hey Emily, I'm planning to get a Hognose in a few years but I'm still a bit concerned about heating since here in Malaysia, its pretty warm most of the time. Usually around 30°C but there are times when the temperature reaches 40°C-50°C (on hazy days). So I'm not sure if I still need to get a heat lamp for basking or to keep warm in general, or if I need a cooling pack. I never came across a website or video that mainly talks about snake care in the equatorial countries where its warmer. Can anyone help me out? also I'm sorry if my English is a bit wack. English ain't my first language lol
wow that seems pretty hot. Mine is between 20 and 30C and it seems to like it just fine. I was advised between 22 and 30, up to 35 below the lamp. As far as I understand, they need a spot to warm up and also an area where it's not as hot, to 'escape' to. I don't have any experience with higher temperatures than mine, but I would be very hesitant to proceed without expert advice.
Lol Malaysia doesn't reach 50 Celcius, the hottest is like 30 something as far as I know, average room temperature here is 23 or so, so it is perfectly fine.
Lol mine too:D he is so hissy and strikes a lot when I have him outside his enclosure. But when he is in his enclousure he is sweet. Hope I will tame him someday :D My hognose is just 2 months old.
Hi Snake Discovery! Your hog nose snake is super cute. I really want to get one someday (I already have a bearded dragon and my sister has a ball python). We also have 3 parakeets. I think their little shovel faces are precious!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
When you tried the different substrates did you end up staying with aspen? Or a mix? I hate how aspen sticks to everything. Curious now, you should do a new video now testing all sorts of substrates!
I didn't; I actually quite like the normal morph. My friend/roommate is considering a sand boa, so maybe he'll get an interesting morph. I've been enjoying learning about snakes; my girlfriend has had a black milk snake for some time and is thinking about getting a rainbow boa.
Can you do a video on garter snakes? I'm going to be getting one in a few months and even though I've done lot of research, a video from a known expert would be awesome!
I found an Eastern yesterday morning, but it's coloration on top was dark and bland. The bottom however was a brilliant rose pinkish color. The top had bands on it, but they were harder to see because of it's more UNATTRACTIVE dark olive coloration. It did literally everything you talked about, including throwing up a blood sac as it was playing dead. It hissed EXTREMELY loudly and bluffed me, before it gave up, turned belly up opened it's mouth stuck out it's tongue, and went completely motionless. I flipped him over a couple of times and lol, he kept just going belly up again. Finally I just left him alone, stood about 10 feet from him, and waited for him to do the coast is clear thing hehe. It took about 7 or 8 minutes, but he finally scampered upon his way. And yes, he bluff struck at me, I'd say about 10 or so times, before he played dead. He was freaking hilarious! And gross. He made a mess all over himself when he played dead. Still hilarious tho. And before anyone on here wants to say something negative, NO I did not hurt him, Nor would I ever do that to a snake. And the only reason I messed with him alittle, is because hognose snakes are fairly rare and knowing what I know about them, I wanted to see if it was all true. Lmao, yes...Yes it is! They are such funny little snakes! This was in Southeast Missouri bythway, about 20 minutes from the Arkansas State line, and about 20 miles from Poplar Bluff Missouri.
Hi there! You said twice a week when young and once a week when older for the feeding. How old are we talking? Mine is a little older than a year. Thanks!
"They don't move very fast" Someone didn't tell the Hognoses at Imperial Reptile and Exotics in Orlando. I'm looking into getting a hognose and visited them, and when I asked to see their hognoses they took one out to show. It kept trying to run off and explore the store and it was really quick.
can i have a western hognose and blue death feigning beetles together in one enclosure? like blue death feigning beetles and a desert hairy scorpion - that works fine. the beetles are the clean up crew...
Emily, our family loves your show and we always look forward to the next post. We've seen you interact a lot with western hognoses and have been inspired ourselves to try a small family breeding project with them. Would you have any recommendations on some good genetics to start with for perhaps a 1/3 ratio setup so that we can have a nice variety? Thank you!
I’m wondering if it would be ok to catch wild American toads outside for my Hognose and feed her that way? Or would I need to collect the toads and put them in a container for future feeding? Freeze them? My main concern is how to safely kill parasites or rid the toads of parasites before feeding.
So while watching your video about hognose snake you mentioned you had a wild caught hognose I was just curious how you went about dealing with the possible parasite infection of him
Please do one of these videos on garter snakes! I'm getting one or more, and I want to know everything about them! Please please please teach us how to care for and breed garters! Mine, unfortunately, have to be wild caught because there are no breeders in my area, and they are completely native here, so I want to try to breed them to give a captive bred option!
The Eastern Hognose has all but disappeared here in east TN. I haven't been able to confirm their presence, not even with road kills for about 20 years now. Sadly the last I found was a road kill about 20 yrs ago.
Hello, I have a baby Western hognose snake that my sister found in September in our driveway at our farm in Nebraska. Since the time we've had him he hasn't eaten until last Wednesday of this month. I would like some advice on how often I should feed the snake since he's started eating. We have him in a 12×16 inch plastic container since he is so small. I did research and taped black paper around the container so he wouldn't feel stressed. He has Aspen smaller bedding and a place to hide and a heating pad. When I fed him I thawed half a pinky mouse in warm water and I used tweezers and he ate it. He seems to be doing fine but I really want to raise this snake properly and know that I'm doing enough for him/ her. Please give me your advice.
Hi :) I have a small less than 1yr old western hognose (female) and I wanted to ask if I should be feeding them twice a week? I had heard about power feeding and how it shortens the life span so I was scared to feed too often but by only doing once a week am I not feeding enough? Love your videos I always check before I think about getting a pet if you have a video about it to try to get as much good info as possible :)
I found a HUGE hognose here in Oklahoma, it was a completely black and about 3 foot long or longer and had a huge hood that was about the size of the palm of my hand
Hi, Emily! Do you have any experience with the tri-colored hognose (Xenodon pulcher)? I've been looking into them, but I'd love to see something on them from you if you have some. Thanks!

I am patient snake lover and have been planning and considering owning a snake for years but wanted to travel first then settle to be fair to whatever lovely I end up getting.
Hi Emily, can you tell me the exact name of the aspen bedding you use for your hognose snakes. I was explaining to someone what you said about hognoses liking to dig tunnels in their substrate. He said he uses sani chips and I indicated I knew that’s not what you used for the hognose and that I would try to find out what you use. Thanks. Pat
I got my ball python a year ago and she's in 20 gallons right now. But when she moves out of it I really wanna put a hognose in it, cause I just love them so much!! But I'm a bit worried if their good with new kinda snake keepers. I don't wanna get a snake I can't feed, and have to get rid of it, I'd be so sad and maybe not get another snake... Or it'd take me years to get the strength for one. So, for now, I want to know if a hognose would be good for me, then like do my research for like... Another two years, then get all the stuff for it and get it!

wow that seems pretty hot.
@@poofypoofball3879 Maybe they mean by the heat index? The heat index can be drastically hotter or colder than the actual temperature.
Just got my first Albino Western Hognose. A little girl. She’s already got big attitude at just a few months old.
Lol mine too:D he is so hissy and strikes a lot when I have him outside his enclosure. But when he is in his enclousure he is sweet. Hope I will tame him someday :D
My hognose is just 2 months old.
Western Hognose snakes are my favorite type of snake too!!
When you tried the different substrates did you end up staying with aspen? Or a mix? I hate how aspen sticks to everything. Curious now, you should do a new video now testing all sorts of substrates!
Hey! I'm in Minnesota (Saint Paul)! I also just bought a Western Hognose at the expo yesterday. Looking forward to raising her!
Congrats! Did you get any special morph?
I didn't; I actually quite like the normal morph. My friend/roommate is considering a sand boa, so maybe he'll get an interesting morph. I've been enjoying learning about snakes; my girlfriend has had a black milk snake for some time and is thinking about getting a rainbow boa.
That's awesome! You can't beat the normal wild-type coloration :-)
Can you do a video on garter snakes? I'm going to be getting one in a few months and even though I've done lot of research, a video from a known expert would be awesome!
Have you checked out Exotic Lair's channel? He has one that he has named "Pissy".
Good explanation on the little hoggies! Your cute too!
They are so adorable!!!
I wish I could have a Western Hognose, but my state (Iowa) says its illegal. I would move states to have one of these beautiful noodles.
I want a Hognose as my first snake when I'm finally get the chance. They just seem so adorable.
Hi there!
You said twice a week when young and once a week when older for the feeding. How old are we talking? Mine is a little older than a year.
Thanks!
"They don't move very fast"
Someone didn't tell the Hognoses at Imperial Reptile and Exotics in Orlando. I'm looking into getting a hognose and visited them, and when I asked to see their hognoses they took one out to show. It kept trying to run off and explore the store and it was really quick.
It's been so long since I've watched their older videos and I forgot how long Emily's hair was lol she look so young too!
Great video! The western Hognoses I've seen have been just plain Grey.
where is the video talking about all your western hognoses? I need it.
can i have a western hognose and blue death feigning beetles together in
one enclosure? like blue death feigning beetles and a desert hairy
scorpion - that works fine. the beetles are the clean up crew...
Thank you!
Nice work, Sure knows her Hognoses. Wonder what she named the first one, seems to be her fav all through the video.
I love these snakes so much!
OMG !!
Their face are sooo adorable
iv been searching about the western hognose and I'm truly in love with them. really cute but I still have somewhat of a phobia
This has only incouraged me for getting my hognose!! I have my habitat all set up
Just got a western hog nose feeding it a fuzzy twice a week his doing great and we are bonding love my little friend
Where in Minnesota are hognoses located. I live in Minnesota and I might go adventuring to search for a few. To observe
I just went to my first reptile expo AND bought my first hognose 🥰🥰
Let's see it :-)
Just got my hognose yesterday looks like I got lucky with the breeder he is very friendly and just had his first feeding today
beautiful wee thing .and the snake was nice too
yikes.
Thanks!
I currently live in London but am wanting to get a snake when I move home to Perth Australia and as it will be my first I was wondering if a Hognose would be a good snake for a beginner? I am patient snake lover and have been planning and considering owning a snake for years but wanted to travel first then settle to be fair to whatever lovely I end up getting.
soooooooooooooo cute :-) both you and the snakes ^^
Clint sent me 😎
Hi Emily, can you tell me the exact name of the aspen bedding you use for your hognose snakes.
