You look uncomfortable. That's how I look when I listen to Meshuggah. I love that feeling.
Exactly that. Every new album takes everything between 2-15 listens (depends on the track) before you actually get the idea on what is going on and finding out the groove... Once you find the groove and can nod your head to it, it becomes life altering. :)
Maybe one reason for Meshuggah being so mesmerising to me is, that my brain on some point giving up searching for a regular groove and is filled with a great BEEEEEP 😂
The timings alone are crazy. He's playing at least two different beats at the same damn time, just look at his legs!
Meshuggah are incredible.
He has that steady tempo as much as possible on that one cymbal because otherwise it would feel even more chaotic. It's funny because 99% of bands have the constant quarter/eighth notes on the hi-hat but when Meshuggah does it, it stands out...

Their video for New Millennium Cyanide Christ is hilarious. Check it out!
Take a look at demiurge... It is (in my opinion) their heaviest song. Just plain masterful guitar work.
Haake uses crashes and china's like most people use a hi hat. Look at a song like bleed. He uses the hi hat in it to create a flowing backdrop for that precise double bass drum rhythm. This song is a lot more jagged and he uses those cymbals to cut through and give a steady pulse over that harsh guitar sound. These guys are masters of creating definition in what sounds like chaos.
Great song and great reaction! Tomas Haake's one of the best drummers around. If you enjoyed this, Dancers to A Discordant System, Combustion, and Electric Red are some of Meshuggah's best work.

If you want another excellent drum cam then look up Shuhei, the drummer of the Japanese band Imperial Circus Dead Decadence (definitely worth checking out, by the way) doing a playthrough of their track YamiYori (full Japanese title being 黄泉より聴こゆ、皇国の燈と焔の少女。). The man is an absolute beast. :D

You mention him riding the symbol like its a bad thing.. the 4 /4 time signature symbol is what keeps everything else anchored. If not for that, it would be very hard for common listener to really get into the beat because they use some wild polyrhythms which are hars to even headbang to
