I've often said (musician since I was a kid) that metal and jazz are where the extreme talent lives. You wanna have your socks blown off, listen to metal and jazz. For whatever reason, they're the two genre's that just call to exceptionally talented players.
It can be such a mindblow when something grooves in multiple ways like that, and composing in a way that suits all of those ways to look at it is very fun. Not just talking rhythm, also voice leading etc.
One of my favorite rhythmic tricks I've taken from Meshuggah is to a use a section with 2 bars of 7/4 followed by one of 2/4, which equals 16 beats. You then superimpose a 4/4 groove with the snare on 3 on top of that and the whole thing resolves every 4 bars, so you can headbang the entire time. \m/
meshuggah is one of the only bands where i feel like the guitar and bass keep the time like a drummer would and the drummer is the one riffing. its amazing.
"you can feel this in 4 different ways" That's exactly how I feel about Meshuggah. You can headbang, do salsa, be weird, and do the robot dance to the same riff with this band

I'm not a drummer nor do I have any music theory knowledge but I have immense appreciation for drumming. When I was a kid/teenager I noticed how drums could change the feel of a song and effectively fuck it up. Lars Ulrich, as most "metal" or "hard rock" persons could probably attest to, was the first person I noticed doing, albeit perhaps not so great. But the take-away being I could identify with bringing the feel down to a rhythmic level and putting stronger emphasis on certain parts and letting others breathe more to change the feel. I don't know what I'm saying anymore, but I think you probably get it?haha
@@Badass1974 What's the difference then? My fave Meshuggah song wrt the drums is Spasm, never found a video of Haake playing it live unfortunately but Troy Wright's cover is handy, plus he did a transcription so I can try and (slowly) learn it. I find adding millions of ghosts notes into an already complicated pattern fairly hard, then Haake keeps the 8th note hi hat pulse going whenever he doesn't have to use double bass pedals so it's not easy stuff to play and the latest stuff like Bleed and so on gets even harder.
A curious fact about this album is that it was not recorded on separate tracks. But they all recorded at the same time, like in a live gig. This band is incredible.

Meshugaah is one of my favorite bands and it was awesome to see this :) cheers, hope more jazz musicians be like you in the future \m/
I still remember how blown away I was, when Thomas said that all their songs are in 4/4 🥴 Completely changed the way I listened to them! Poly-rhythms of doom 🤘🏻😸🤘🏻
I started listening to Meshuggah back in 1999 and I never really understood how it all really worked until after the Nothing album. When I learned that yes it's 4/4 but it's a revolving door that comes back around and resolves itself to make that 4/4. That's what blew my mind. Stengah is a perfect example. You can hear when it resolves itself and starts over. I fucking love Meshuggah. The only band I feel smarter after listening to.

Do you know the Swedish drummer Morgan Agren? He's done a bunch of prog rock stuff, but in the late 90's he did an instrumental album with Meshuggah's guitarist, Fredrik Thordendal. Absolutely crazy stuff. There's a 5:51 video on UA-cam of them playing a medley of stuff from that album. Some similar ideas to Meshuggah, but definitely a different vibe, and more showy drums. Worth a reaction video for sure! "Precision: Fredrik Thordendal and Morgan Agren - Sol niger Within"
@@out_of_the_box_gbc Ah yeah very true. Not sure why I said that. The *video* is instrumental and just the two of them though, so no growling for him to deal with :) I should also mention that the vid is old and taped from Swedish TV, so the quality is pretty rough!
Seeing someone genuinely shaken by listening Meshuggah is absolutely amazing. I remember hearing Future Breed Machine for the first time and there was no looking back.
It's awesome to hear your praise to these musicians, as a metalhead who is getting really turned into jazz, it's awesome to see these guys recognised across genres and other musicians. @@Rackalzz awesome!, I'm happy to expose them to anyone. I had know idea someone would actually listen to a random suggestion on UA-cam! Glad you like them. Garret actually did a reaction to the drummer shortly after I made this comment. I recommend their entire discography. They change over time but are always recognizable as "Car Bomb."
The first time I heard an album, my friends an i bought it together. We heard about them and wanted to try them out. I remember we sat through all of a cassette of Destroy Erase Improve. And after we were like all in shock. None of us could really say we liked it. One thing we all said and agreed on was how intensely, insanely difficult their music really was. We all eventually grew to like their music over time, just out of the pure respect of how they do what they do. My exact words back then were, "I don't know if I like it, but they are the best at it!"
It's so fucking entertaining to watch someone with a totally different musical background enjoy the metal monoliths of Meshuggah Keep up the great content and maybe react to more stuff from them! Greetz from germany :)
The drum on this song is like an eternal polyrythmic drum solo ! To me, he is one of the most talented drummer ever. He is getting better and better with time, it's amazing. He was talented in the first albums but now he is a freakin' beast!!!
This is your second video I've ever seen. Before this it was your Bleed reaction from a month ago. You said then, "I'm not gonna listen to it, because of the screaming." Now: "I think I might could get into Meshuggah." Got yourself another sub.
If you just discovered Meshuggah - then you missed a lot! They have been doing it since 1993, and every album is a new masterpiece. Every time they are pushing the limits of what can be played. My favorite would be Catch 33, and if you ever get to it the best songs would be "In death is life/in death is death" and "sum". I heard them live couple of years ago and they are live even better than on a recording. Just perfect. Everything played to a click.

Tomas Haake is what you get when you cross a drummer and a mathematician.
Well, you should definitely check out Car Bomb then! ;)
Sir, I believe you spelled magician wrong
No that's Steve Judd more like
Drumathemagician
So cool to see you enjoying this band so much! :D
His socks bring extra power to his drumming
Do you know the Swedish drummer Morgan Agren? He's done a bunch of prog rock stuff, but in the late 90's he did an instrumental album with Meshuggah's guitarist, Fredrik Thordendal. Absolutely crazy stuff. There's a 5:51 video on UA-cam of them playing a medley of stuff from that album. Some similar ideas to Meshuggah, but definitely a different vibe, and more showy drums. Worth a reaction video for sure! "Precision: Fredrik Thordendal and Morgan Agren - Sol niger Within"
The album is not instrumental. Best Metal album ever!
@@out_of_the_box_gbc Ah yeah very true. Not sure why I said that. The *video* is instrumental and just the two of them though, so no growling for him to deal with :) I should also mention that the vid is old and taped from Swedish TV, so the quality is pretty rough!
I’d like to hear your thoughts on Animals as Leaders
Samuel Their drummer is one of the best if not the best. 👍🏽💀
I second this
Seeing someone genuinely shaken by listening Meshuggah is absolutely amazing. I remember hearing Future Breed Machine for the first time and there was no looking back.
How have I never seen your reactions before. Loved it man New sub here
You have to go see them live. It’s an amazing experience.
Best light show i've ever seen too! Saw them with Animals in Cinci a few years back. Polyrhythm heaven.
The light show is cool, but I'm glad I got to see them before they got old and lost their energy.
It's awesome to hear your praise to these musicians, as a metalhead who is getting really turned into jazz, it's awesome to see these guys recognised across genres and other musicians.
You should check out something with Matt Garstka behind the drums, mainly Animals as Leaders. He is ridiculous in the best possible way, he is incredible. You'll enjoy watching him play.
I did a video on his Tooth and Claw somewhere in here....and thanks for the compliment, I respect my roots.
@garrettmillerdrums youre mind seemed blown here. Loved this reaction and breakdown.
I listen to this in the car everyday.. you know when ur just baked and the music has captured you and ur just cruising to or from work, Meshuggah is the absolute best.
YESS Meshuggah !
You should do Fleshgod Apocalypse - Francesco Paoli - The Violation - Filmed at DNA Lounge
Francesco is an absolute machine.
Meshuggah is just one of those bands where I hear a song and I just don't understand it and it takes me ages just to get into one song. One album will last me years
Try Car Bomb. It's even more out there, and convoluted, but it's ultimately still listenable.
@@mattthompson1876 a big thanks to you for suggesting car bomb. i ´m just hearing them for the first time and this is THE SHIT! :D
Matt Thompson off to car bomb
Drummer here...great to see a reaction from someone who appreciates how complex and hard this is and knows what he’s talking about. Nice one man.
Watching this guy react is beautiful
So much appreciation for the craft
finally someone reacts intelligently to meshuggah and tomas. thank you!!!
The only video on UA-cam with no dislikes.
Yeah, about that...
@@HeyItsMeDukeYee Awe what did you do?! lol
It was fun while it lasted. Your comment is evidence. :-)
jinxed it :D
@@mywillbedone1784 Totally.
I had never seen the drum video for this. Absolutely amazing. Tomas Haake is a bad man.
Yeah Dude!
Meshuggah is my all time favorite band, but to this day, all their songs takes time to grow on me. It is always worth it though. Pure ecstasy!
I think you would appreciate the drumming from a band called Opeth "Eternal Rains Will Come" and "Deliverance" are great!
It's so fucking entertaining to watch someone with a totally different musical background enjoy the metal monoliths of Meshuggah
Keep up the great content and maybe react to more stuff from them!
You said then, "I'm not gonna listen to it, because of the screaming." Now: "I think I might could get into Meshuggah."
Got yourself another sub.
With every returning album, Thomas gets even better.
i like how you're just going with the music even though you're a jazz drummer. you're happy as
4:34 Heaviest riff on the planet starts, god damn.
