Meshuggah is honestly so dark and heavy that it weirdly flips to being calming and trance like.

You have no idea how right you are. My son had trouble sleeping as an infant/toddler…this song solved it. He would fall sound sleep to ‘I’ without fail. He’s now 19 and it’s still his favorite song.

Well, if your introduction to Meshuggah is "I" and you dig it you actually may call yourself a metal elitist after all 😂.
It's absolutely not the easiest song in their repertoire but in a way it's a nice collage of everything they do. The fast, the slow, the groovy, the polyrhythmic, the melodic solo's, the 'broken ringtone" solo's.
You can listen to, idk, Lorna Shore or Slaughter to Prevail but it doesn't get heavier than Meshuggah.
There is an excellent live registration here on YT of their Bloodstock show last summer. 4K visuals and perfect audio. Singer still sings the same way after 35 years. He's 57 now.
    Suggested listening:
    Straws Pulled at Random
Dancers to s Discordant System (whole ObZen album actually)
    Demiurg
    Rational Gaze
    Phantoms
    They Move Below
Ligature Marks (these last three from their latest album)
Or Future Breed Machine from '95 (they really were like 15 years ahead of their time)
To name a few. Three decades of never disappointing music. Never a weak album.

And hell yes, Meshugga begun in the town I work in. They are absolutely brilliantly insane! Their rythms and force is a wall of power! They beat you up. The same town gave birth to Refused, and tons of other great groups, musicians, singers, rappers… when you visit Sweden, let us know and I would love to give you input for things to experience.the country is loooooong, so you will want to do some planning. I recall seeing footage of the band when they were recording that chugging intro part. They had a piece of paper with a string of numbers written down so they could all play the same thing when recording their parts. It's a full minute and a half without a single consistent repeating pattern, and it's far from the only random part in the song. I'd highly recommend watching Yogev Gabay's rhythmic analysis of the song if you want to get nerdy with it.
The drumcam of Tomas Haake playing "Bleed" live is an essential Meshuggah thing to see. The guy is a like an android with endless stamina.

Regarding your opener - I agree. People-pleasing can only go so far. You can be polite and respectful, bite your tongue when appropriate, or just walk away, but the bottom line is that you've got to be your authentic self. Otherwise, you are disrespecting yourself in order to fit in.

My first listening to Meshuggah was when Catch 33 came out. Its similarly wild to "I", that album is very similar to "I" EP. Its also one large song but this time arbitrarily divided into sections. It took me a while to get into Meshuggah, I could only listen to them when I had special mood for it. But after couple of years I didnt needed that at all. And when Obzen came out I was ready for next portion of crazy music.

  • @wojecire
    @wojecire 8 місяців тому +13

Here's what I suggest as a guide for Meshuggah. Might be very different from others but here's my 2c.
    Contradictions Collapse:
Not missing anything if you skip, generic thrash metal with a Jens sounding like a ripoff of James From Metallica lol. If you like thrash metal give the album a listen.
    None:
Humiliative is a must, it's the opening track and the best imo. You'll recognize their sound from 94' as uniquely Meshuggah.
    Destroy Erase Improve:
Future Breed Machine, Soul Burn and Sublevels are musts from this album.
    Chaosphere:
Concatenation and New Millennium Cyanide Christ.
Concatenation being the opening track sets the tone of the album well. It's chaotic and manic.
    Nothing:
Front to back album listen is the best for this one first time. And for the love of god listen to the original yellow album first and not the remaster blue album, it's okay but the original is better for first listen.
    I:
Just do it. (You did it!!!!)
    Catch Thirty Three:
This is one of those where the tracks just run into each other so it's one long ass track essentially, it's worth the entire listen but if you're not into that at least listen to the In Death - Is Life and In Death - Is Death combo as those are not to be missed.
    Obzen:
Like Nothing, this is a front to back listen album. Every track is amazing.
    Koloss:
My favorite album and another front to back listen album. Every track is an absolute banger. Fuck I love this album.
    The Violent Sleep of Reason:
Clockworks, Violent Sleep of Reason and Our Rage Won't Die are the musts here with an optional Born in Dissonance if you like your brain being fucked with more than the usual Meshuggah track. It's a fun one.
    Immutable:
Broken Cog into The Abysmal Eye live from the latest tour run is insane. It's their concert opener and should be seen. Phantoms and Ligature Marks are also good ones to listen to from this album.
If you have the time and interest in the band I highly suggest a full discography listen but that's quite a time commitment.
