Kaleb I.A You should make a video about TS vs TE (Star platinum vs king crimson) because no one shuts up about it smh. I keep telling people SP would be fast enough to counter KC but IDK. Hope you can make a vid about this. Can TE even kip TS??
@Yongo Bazuk he can use hamon with hermit purple, making both hermit purple AND his hamon stronger, it's not completely useless, besides he can find just about anyone with it
I actually had this discussion with a friend earlier today and here’s what I told him: 1: Breathing techniques are an actual thing IRL both for martial arts and therapy amongst other things. Granted there is no irl breathing technique for channeling the power of the sun via the vibrations in our blood, but there *are* breathing techniques for speeding or slowing your bloodflow. All that being said I like how surprisingly close to reality it is. 2: It requires the use of martial arts (at least in the case of fighting a vampire or pillar man) and I love martial arts. Another facet of this point is that it can be learned by anyone as opposed to stands which you may or may not receive and if you do its pretty random. I generally prefer power systems that rely on skill as opposed to luck but thats just me. 3: Is its extremely versatile and can be used in a ton of ways. Any form of liquid and even some solids (i think) can be manipulated if you’re skilled enough with Hammon. We see this very prominently in Battle Tendency. Stands are pretty versatile too dont get me wrong, but they generally have more limitations and as was shown by Dio’s stand users several require a certain amount of setup. Hammon is every bit the thinking man’s power as a stand is. All that being said: I dont dislike stands. I think they’re really cool. I just like Hammon better personally. Not trying to say Hammon is objectively better. Just that I personally prefer it.
This is a copy-paste of my comment but I'd really like to add on. Stands are like pokemon. While yes, you can be infinitely more creative and have more personalized abilities, Your story essentially has to shape around the abilities of Stands and not the users. There are some stands that you simply cannot fight. Jotaro would've lost if he didnt reveal at the end that he was also able to stop time. Kakyoin tried his best and simply couldnt do anything. Part 6 team literally lost because they simply couldnt match the Heaven at its peak regardless of strategy. Polnareff almost died twice against Diavolo because the guy has a broken ability. Your story MUST shape around the ''pokemons'' of each villain/hero. With Hamon, your story has to shape around your characters. As they grow, so does their hamon. Some characters have more potent hamon like Jonathan and Ultimate Kars, Who used it recklessly to overpower the enemy. Other characters like Caesar and Joseph relied on their tecnique or wits to outmanuever/outsmart the enemy. Hamon has a wide variety of uses and it is extremely effective as a weapon even against normal people. We know Caesar could kill Joseph when they first fought, a normal person couldnt get out of that bubble. Hamon can be used for precognition, hypnosis, Levitation, Energy transfer, forcing Liquid to behave abnormally, forcing matter to behave abnormally (as with the hair example), Can be used to heal self, heal others, has different magnetic poles, easy to learn but terrifyngly hard to master. I find Hamon to be more interesting. You can always blabber about a random poke-stand that has ''Kill everything'' ability, with their enemy having ''kill everything shield''. But you have to get creative and smart with hamon to use it. And it does have many abilities to pull from.
I actually liked the Hamon power, but I understand why Araki switched it. He wanted a more creative power system and he didn't wanna bring back undead characters.
I don't have a problem with Hamon getting sidelined to Stands because the sheer scope of stand abilities is more interesting. However, since it was demonstrated that a stand can have synergy with Hamon, it makes we wish that got explored a little more. Didn't need to show up often or at all outside of an arc where Kars returns and develops his own stand. That would be pretty awesome imho.
Stands make it so each user has their style of fighting, but every person is generally pretty narrow in their fighting capabilities. What I loved about Joseph's arc (Bloodyb stream and pillar men and all that) was that although each character had their own unique way of fighting, each fight was a constant back and forth of the combatants Uno reversing each other. It was great! Seeing Joseph grow and develop an understanding of Hamon was great! Heck, seeing Jonathan and Dio fight was a joy too! I completely understand why someone would prefer Stands. I still enjoy Hamon for what it offered, and I'm glad we had that too. In the age of vampires and pillar men, it made more sende than simply Stands. Honestly, I think most Stand users would've been dead on the spot; even Jotaro and Diavolo would be in trouble. And we saw what the pillar men did with the vampires. I don't think Dio would stand (hehe) much of a chance either. It was a different world back then! We've even seen how easily vampires were brushed off in Stardust Crusaders. Gone is the immortality and infectious blood and heads with tentacles. It's simply not the same anymore.
Right I mean look at naruto, we saw all the versatile ways chakra could be used, or in dragon ball we seen Ki could be used to make living constructs like Goku's dragon fist or Gotenks kamikaze ghosts, imagine all the epic hamon battles we could've seen if Araki stuck with Hamon, it could've been used as a support healing characters or giving them boosts or we it could've been used to control plants and trees since it's life energy, or we could've seen it be used to control the elements like fire, water, lightning, snow and ice, air, some characters could've learned to fly with it or used on peoples minds to create illusions, or It could control people and there actions, or hamon could steal away people's life aging them or hamon could've grown extra limbs and bones and harden those bones so they could be used as weapons, so many versatile ways it could've been applied or in Naruto we have Onoki the kage of the hidden stone, he had a kekkei genkai called particle effect that wiped people's literal atoms, some very very powerful hamon users could've had such an ability, or hamon could be used to vibrate yourself like the flash allowing you to phase through walls and objects or have projectiles phase through you.
"Stands make it so each user has their style of fighting, but every person is generally pretty narrow in their fighting capabilities." I disagree with this one, there are so many stands that force the heros to beat them in a unsual way, and use their stands with creativity. Araki expands the possibilities of the main JoJos Stand, Jotaro is pretty straight foward but Josuke, Giorno and Jolyne have stands that can be used in different and creative ways BUT, i wish we could see Hamon being used with stands, or at least, see Joseph use more Hamon in part 3 or 4. + i really liked that Araki made Spin be conected to stands in part 7
@@mateusmarinho6941 Fair enough! I might've worded my thoughts poorly or simply be of another opinion than you XD What I meant is that I view Stands as somewhat similar to Pokémon. Some matchups are better than others. When a Stand isn't equipped to deal with a certain opponent, its user will have to adapt or suffer a loss. I guess it's just that there are scenes, like in Stardust Crusaders, where a younger Joseph easily would've won through use of Hamon. You're telling me he could not have easily beaten D'Arby?
To be fair, I thought that was an excellent episode! Caesar and Joseph had different fighting styles even though they were both Hamon users, and would've loved to see that expanded upon. We really only got to see Jonathan, Barone, Caesar, Joseph and Lisa Lisa use Hamon. And Cars I suppose. Looking forward to part 7!
@@minorcomet282 i feel that when will zeppeli missed speedwagon's diaphragm, the energy went to his abs instead lol (this is a joke ofc. don't take it seriously)
*Joseph standing over Jotaro:* "If we still used hamon, it would eventually devolve into a 'ki' stereotype and we would begin powerscaling like naruto and dragon ball! Those kids can destroy planets! Think, Jotaro, think!"
It's funny how Araki did powerscale Hamon at the end of part 2 (Kars), but removed the problem instantly with a lil prophecy gimmick and never went back to it. Now we have a formula (Stands) that can avoid powercreeping, since it's about the creativity of powers rather than brute strength.
@@sasdagreat8052 exactly, a Stand user doesnt get stronger through force, they get stronger through either radical shifts in their character like Koichi or learning to think on their feet and improvise like Josuke. The relative power of the stand is still the same, but *how* it is used is what changes. Well I mean mostly, unless an arrow is involved.
I like how you could use Hamon through different items and objects tho. It was so cool to see Joseph fight using an exploding Hamon cactus, or seeing Cesar literally throw razor sharp Hamon bubbles. Also, they didn't have to completely erase the main form of magical energy in the middle of the show, they could've allowed people to use Hamon and Stands, or even made Stands that use Hamon.
By what I understand, Hamon are better power system by feeling more "natural" and less gimmicky but great if used creatively, Stands however are a more interesting system because of their "limits" and specific set of rules having a vast arsenal of unique ability. Stands feel artificial and pretty convenient story wise, Hamon on the other side have much more sense. Hamon can however powercreep other hamon users overtime in term of raw power, Stands are powercreep proof powers so there's rarely a gap between Stand users. They aren't really one better than another, they both have their strong and weak points. It's a matter of preference.
@@BodylessAndNowherethere are huge gaps between stand users. Hamon is so much more interesting and people could train to get more powerful. Now people get stands, and have them mastered within 3 minutes. It's a dumb concept overall imo
@@johndodo2062 What huge gaps? Aside from few fair exceptions of the plot (which any unbiased confrontation should avoid that), you can potentially beat any stand users. Anything else is just straight glorifying one or another system you like better. No, I'm not counting Requiem stuff, I don't care about Requiem or what you gonna say about it, just like I'm ignoring the Vampire (with a stand) and Ultimate Lifeform stuff and other bullshit plot convenience that you can abuse from each power system. Everybody becomes much better with a pair of magic mask or a magic arrow.
Personally I would’ve liked for Hamon to appear here and there and have more interaction with stands. I think it would’ve been feasible given the stuff Hamon on its own could do and with the sheer variety of stands and stand powers that appear.
Yeah exactly, its not like Hamon had to be the primary battle mechanic, but keeping it around would create some very interesting scenario's since Hamon's crazyness is infinite. Like: - In part 3, Joseph could've used hamon more as his primary battle mechanic having more fights with Joseph. - in part 4, Joseph could've teaches some basic hamon to Josuke, giving a boost to crazy Diamond while metaphorically accepting Joseph as his dad. - in part 5, some enemies could've been hamon users, also the gang could've visited the hamon temple from part 2 to awaken his hamon and enhance GE - in part 6, the user of Dragons Dream could've been a Hamon user, making that fight more crazy.
@@boredboi6279 But imagine a stand that consists of mist that can be changed to different types of mist which the user uses to shoot hamon lightning bolts through it.
I really REALLY want to believe that Jotaro got so pissed at the end of part 3 that he inadvertently channeled hamon into Dio with the final blow without even realizing it
I mean, the light that comes out of DIO's body *is* quite reminiscent of how hamon would burn/disintegrate vampires. And we don't see Star Platinum have that effect on other stands or people. Honestly you could make a decent argument there since Joseph had some hamon without training just by being a descendent of Johnathan.
@@yeastofthoughtsmind9623 No it's not when vampires hit with Hamon they melt they melt into a corpse it's not close to what Jotaro did with anything closely when it comes to vampires and Hamon it looks sort of like what's happened when straitzo killed himself
I don't mind the focus changing from hamon to stands, I just think hamon got done dirty in part 3. Like you said, hamon is very versatile and Joseph had access to an arsenal of hamon techniques during part 3, but it hardly gets used at all. For example, in episode 6 of part 3 when Anne is swimming through shark infested water, Jotaro jumps in to save her. Joseph can literally WALK ON WATER. Not once does it occur to him that he can simply run over to Anne and pick her up.
"Oh, you eat animals? Well that goes back to the animals eating the grass and the grass goes to photosynthesis, it always goes back to the sun!" *everything is... a sun reference.*
I fully acknowledge that Stands have more power and variety than Hamon ever will. That said, because Hamon starts small and simple and can become varied and powerful through forging a deeper understanding and developing individual techniques, it draws my interest more.
Well the difference I see is that while Stands have more variety as a power *type,* hamon has more variety in each individual user. An individual stand user typically has one ability (some have more, like KK having time erase and epitaph, or Kira having 3 types of bombs), while an individual hamon user can use many different hamon abilities. The only real limit on it is the users creativity. However, this can actually be used as an argument against hamon. Because it is such a general "energy type" ability, you could run into power scaling issues like ki in Dragon Ball or chakra in Naruto. Stands usually having one ability allows Araki to keep the style of fights where *how* you use your power is more important than *what* your power is, without having to worry about a constantly increasing power scale.
Hamon is more unique. Stands make the show generic and allows effortless writing. Oh this character is strong? Well then give the enemy an overpowered stand that manages to get defeated for no real reason. It's kind of annoying how stands are just a cheap-out. Hamon had room to deepen and widen, and the process of improving it was cool to watch
@@DoctorWhoNow01 Hamon is unique? How much anime have you seen? Hamon is so generic even people who don't watch anime know how characters use a "mysterious" energy, be it ki or something of the sort. Stands are the unique (or almost unique) powers here. Hamon starts from the classic Dragon Ball and earlier.
@@presence5692 Yeah, now that you mention it, Hamon is just "Sun Ki", isn't it. Stands were probably the best choice to make the series stand out from Chakra/Nen/Ki/Soul Energy/Mana.
"Just use both." "What?" "Just. Literally use both. In situations where your Stand doesn't apply, use this personal skill-based energy to compensate. Joseph did it! He literally ELECTRIFIED HIS PURPLE HERMIT AS A SHIELD AGAINST DIO. HE CAN USE HAMON IN CONJUNCTION WITH HIS STANDS, THAT'S KINDA AWESOME. IMAGINE STAR PLATINUM WITH HAMON FISTS FLYING AT LIGHT SPEED. Or imagine if it was the 20 meter HAMON SPLASH."
Yeah but didn’t they mention that hermit purple conducts hamon really well. Through most mediums hamon isn’t too versatile such as solids. It does raise the question of if hamon works entirely through stands but I think it’s safe to assume similar to profession acquired stands hermit purple and Jonathan’s stand are specifically for hamon users. So in my opinion I don’t think so but it’s up to debate
@@zacharygiles2984 Yes he is. He was in fact so strong, it took an asspull to lose, unlike with most heroes where it's the other way round. And he still turned it into a pyrrhic victory for himself.
Its a shame hamon kinda just dissapeared after part 2. It was briefly in part 3 but not for that long. It would have been nice to see people using stands and hamon combined or some people using hamon and some using stands. I feel hamon does reflect the user quite well, every user had completely different moves which were unique to them. Hamon keeping the user young and was able to do alot of healing to the user would have been very useful for all the characters in jojo, lisa lisa was 50 but looked in her 20s because of hamon, this would have been great for joseph in parts 3,4 and jotaro in part 6.
Plot twist Khars comes back in the end and kills all the stand users leaving only a long long descendant of JoJo to relearn Hamon and save the day using a stand Hamon combo.
IIRC, there's a probably-not-canon JoJo novel with a timeline where Kars comes back and his "ultimate lifeform" ability includes being able to copy Stands. Which makes sense, if he really has *all* the abilities of any lifeform that's ever existed.
Except that hamon doesn't effect kars anymore and it would do shit and there are billion stands who can defeat him or trap him or send him back to space Dude yow can you forget that kars is the best hamon user there is before his defeat
@@todo1231 kars became the greatest hamon user in less than a day without even trying... kars has an ultimate understanding of all life forms as the ultimate lifeform, viruses are made of genetic material, he could simply clone the virus OR recreate it to be the best.
Since Stands are life energy and Hamon is life energy I just think it would be cool if Hamon was one of the few ways a non-Stand user could actually fight against the "only Stands can touch other Stands" thing. Wouldn't be fun if it showed up *all the time* but the rare use of Hamon-filled weapons to fight against a Stand would be interesting to see a couple times
Honestly I can't see something like Hamon just vanishing. Sure its a simple ability, but the necessity of breathing techniques and raw human spirit just means someone will rediscover the techniques anyway. Hamon very much still has life in it.
Speedwagon is obviously the strongest and I'm not even kidding. He can hire Hamon and stand users. Also, guns can defeat most stands, except the faster ones
From a storytelling perspective, the combat system centred around hamon had an elegant simplicity to it. The possible actions that could be taken by the characters were more restricted which forced them to be creative to obtain the upper hand through other means. Johnathan and Joseph had to find ways to avoid getting hit by the overwhelming physical strength of the vampires and pillarmen while finding an opening to land a clean hamon strike. On the other hand, vampires and the pillarmen had to find ways to avoid being touched by hamon. There is a certain satisfaction to watching the characters think outside the box while being bound by the relatively tight restrictions of hamon-based combat. The combat system centred around stands has a broader scope of possibilities. This allows the writer to be more creative with assigning abilities which vastly expands the possible natures the fights could have. Part 3 had everything from direct fisticuffs between Jotaro and Dio to video games. However, the characters still have to think creatively, be it with their stand abilities or general tactics, to gain an advantage since most of the combatants enter the fights at maximum power. In either case, affording the characters the opportunity to be creative made the fights interesting to watch. The elegant simplicity of hamon was refreshing compared to the more intricate systems used by many shows today. On the other hand, the near boundless possibilities of stands prevent the series from getting predictable. I believe if the series had stuck to hamon only, it would have become harder and harder to design creative fights, although not impossible (Part 2 saw Joseph channelling hamon through all manner of objects after all). As a series that wants to have continued expansion of the lore and universe, stands are a more sensible choice. However, saying that hamon was merely “pretty cool” when it was around does a great disservice to the creativity of the fights Araki designed within the confines of hamon rules.
Totally. While the story is still around Hamon I felt it more realistic and engaging. Sure Stands are cool and full of possibilities but it just throw all logics out of the window which makes critical situation just seem less interesting because they could just pull something like TIME TRAVEL or sth and we will never question twice
I mean it would be nice to have a villain Hamon user and watch the protagonist spend the entire time trying to figure out what their Stand is, when they don't even have one. Even if its for just one fight. Because that's kinda how most Stand fights start, "I need to figure out what X Stand does so I can beat it." and I feel characters would be so used to that mindset that they would be so confused and at a disadvantage fighting a Hamon user.
I think Tonio (the chef in part 4) would have been a prime candidate. How is his food so good? His stand allows him to fill the food with hamon. You're eating literal life energy, directly replenishing every cell in your body. It fits with his quest for making people healthier and doesn't really impact the main story at all, but adds great ... flavour :)
I don't like Joseph as a protagonist and don't like the pacing of Part 1, but Hamon itself is a fantastic thing that should have been more present. This coming from someone who solidly prefers Stands.
@@langleysenterprise5134 that's pretty much the reason. Hamon is basically a cultivation technique that allows indirect usage of stand ability. There was no special characters that took it further or explored different possiblities with it. Hamon and Spin is basically the same thing. They belong to the same root. However spin was developed much further than hamon ever did because spin is used against varying foes while hamon is against vampires. There is still uniqueness in hamon and Spin. It coveres the most ground and two hamon abilities still relies on the person. If we tried to include hamon in the future. We would need to make sure they are still powerfull enough and expressive enough to be included. Joseph is a good example of hamon reflecting it's user. Joseph will never go with strength but cunningness. Jonathan was basicly a saint thus he is capable of spreading life. The best thing that could be done would be an fairly ordinary person being added into an organization since all hamon converges to a one (namely vines healing, magnetism etc.) This would allow hamon be passed from people to people without diminishing. This would be especially important for Speedwagon Foundation.

Hamon enthusiast here. I just love the versatility of hamon, and the fact that you have to earn it, instead of just being shanked by a rusty alien arrow or something.
I wish they made hamon a bit more wide spread so some guy in like part 5 maybe used it, and they had a stand that manipulates sunlight to empower the hamon. But, i don't think hamon could be the main focus of another part. As Araki said himself, seeing a third Jojo train his hamon would be boring, there's a reason they made Joseph a natural and only trained to perfect it. If they made a third part, to not be repetitive they'd need to be as good of a hamon user as late part 2 Joseoh in the beginning.
There is some people just randomly born with stand But hamon u have to learn After learned it u need a trick to make it more useful But stand u gonna reach max potentials gonna learn what moves it can do reaching maximum abilities learn how it work properly and need to find out ur own stand weakness German engineering is superior

As far as ik in the dio vs Kakyoin last fight when he used 20 meter emerald splash dio touched the strings and he saw the whole system so technically if those strings were full of hamon yes dio would most likely just die, but we probs won’t know
I personally loved hamon, but I feel like it would’ve gotten tired very quickly after part 2. Joseph defeated the original undead/immortals; that’s not easy to top. I feel like any further plot would’ve felt either underwhelming or contrived. Stands took Jojo in a new direction, and, though I’m not all caught up, I like it.
I second this: after Pillar Men (god knows what happened to Santana) the Hamon idea got sided to some fighting effects but the biggest one (fight pillar man and mask transformed minions) got totally out of the question. Try to use hamon against certain stands that are actually dangerous, specially if you can't see them unless you're a stand user
Hamon had one purpose. It was sun karate anyone can learn to kill vampires. Hamon users might individually learn some hamon hacks or some vampires might have a trick or two, but overall there isnt much a hamon user or vampires can do that others of their kind couldnt hypothetically copy. I imagine the fights wouldve eventually felt less special and thats why Araki made Stands. I remember Stands being described as a person's fighting spirit and it feels very apt for what they are. I really like how certain aspects of Stands can kind of imply about their users, like how Crazy Diamond's healing implies that their was something in Josuke's life he wanted to mend when he was young, or how Cheap Trick's user likely had self-destructive paranoia.
I honestly think that Hamon is great, and i would love to see it being fused with stands, like Hermit Purple or Tusk and Spin. However we cannot disagree at the flexability of Stands, and thanks to that Araki has enough space in his writing to show us why we love Jojo so much.
With Hamon it felt more like a fight between intelects, as the fighting style of each character was determined largely by themselves. With stands it feels more like a puzzle each side of a fight is trying to solve
Debunking the star platnium is Jonathan theory. You see stands are a manifestation of Thy self. And how would it be possible for someone like jotaro to have a stand that's Jonathan their personalities don't match up at all? Furthermore the only similarity I see to star platnium and Jonathan is they buff
We can’t deny though, Jonathan punches pretty hard. He was able to overpower Tarkus who was able to effortlessly hold a Boulder in the air with one finger
I personally prefer Hamon to Stands, but I understand why Araki made the switch, and I agree it was a good decision on his part. Not just artistically, but also commercially. I would never say Hamon is better than Stands, I just personally prefer it more.
I'd actually like an idea if enemies were stand users and heroes (or at least main hero) were hamon user. I mean, trying to get the stuff around you to be used in unusual or overpowered ways, like Joseph did, for example, with his hat, was breathtaking.
I miss the strategy that came from hamon fights. It always felt like Joseph had something insane up his sleeve, and I wish that were present with stands.
It defiantly felt more grounded and easier to understand, when someone did something really smart with hamon I could better understand how smart the move was than with stands. But I still love the fuck out of stands.
I would agree back when i watched part 3. But after watching part 4 5 and reading 7 i fully disagree. There's a brilliance in how the stands work in how it's a complete mystery and the character needs to come up with a battle plan on the spot whilst also trying to figure out what the stand is. A great example of this is the boat fight in part 5, the entire concept was just figuring out what the hell was going on. Hamon has a wonderful simplicity in it where you can be really creative, but with stand, it takes that creativity to another lever. You need to be creative to win in jojo. (Unless you're Jotaro)
Makes sense why it wasn’t in part 3 as they had a limited time frame before Holly died and I don’t remember exactly how long but they had to train their hamon for a decent amount of time to get any good at it. Part 4 they never had someone to train them except maybe old Joseph but even then there was no point as it was basically just taking down Kira and then they live peaceful lives while someone like Joseph and Caesar were ready to spend the rest of their lives fighting. Maybe Jotaro could’ve learned it from Joseph at some point after part 3 but I guess he was too busy being a marine biologist
Exactly, since Stands compared to Hamon are near-infinite in their potential. Hamon is a versatile ability, but only established to be useful against vampires, zombies, Pillar Men, or anything adjacent. Stands are my favorite power system in any series because there’s no power scaling and any ability can fight any ability no matter how powerful (unlike series such as DragonBall or Naruto Shipudden where objective strength is most important) as long as you’re creative in your approach.
Hamon in theory could have more potentional than anyone realizes it is the energy of life after all. Maybe an ability like stealing the life/sun energy from others as a evil hamon user maybe could be a thing. Kars already showed some of its potentional to be a big threat to others by attacking joseph with it. The sun is the source of life and potentionally by removing that source you could end it maybe. Idk
actually, that's kinda why I don't like power systems like stands post part 3 for the most part this includes other series the main issue is the threat feeling artificial and forced as it's really easy to make one-off over-complicated ability then never have them used again because there to useless outside there one-off upper hand. then there's the ass pull power-ups and changes to abilities because they were too restrictive to be used narratively I actually think having a more limited toolbox actually requires the user to be genuinely smarter having cesear and joseph have wildly different toolboxes based off of only pure application and master is actually interesting to me.
Well from what I gathered, the main thing that makes Hamon super versatile, is how you can utilize it within the environment (like passing the force through walls or boiling up water) as well as its effects on certain tools (amplifying the kinetic energy of cacklers, or makeshift tools via some kind of magnetism). It may have started off as just some brand of monster slaying martial arts, but they could have very easily broaden the horizons by mixing it up with conventional ninjitsu, circus stunts, military tactics or even magic tricks, and then play around with the idea that many people from different cultures could have invented their own variations of Hamon simply because of how natural solar energy is and how humans in general tend to like to experiment with different practices. Not to say that Stands aren't full with potential themselves, it's just a shame how they decided to just drop Hamon for something completely different, all without properly exploring how those two power systems would interact with each other, let alone flesh out Hamon at all beyond the things done in Part 2.
I think that if Hammon had stayed we would've seen a broken power scale like other series. I can esaly see how the goal would be for characters to keep getting stronger and stronger hammon. I much rather see a system that operates similar to rock paper scissors. Where just because stand A can beat stand B, and stand B can beat C, that doesn't mean that A can win against C
You made a fair point. Can you imagine how much stronger Joseph would be if he keep training until get to the Kars level of hamon energy and start to use a amulet with the red stone of aja. He would obliterate Dio no matter what type of stand he had.
I don't really see how that's possible since Kars became the pinnacle of life itself and there's no way to top that within the JoJo universe without having a very broken stand
Now I know in the JoJo games Jonathan barraged with star Platinum or any stand but thats a video game he's still humen Diablo with King Crimson could kill him
I like the fact that every jojo is different from the other, like, jonathan's the strongest physically, joseph's the skillest with hamon, and well jotaro has stand. And also, i like to remember that jonathan beat the shit out of dio without hamon and stand hahahah

Hamon energy can also be passed down to a successor or to an extent via genetics, I'm only on part 4 so far but with the exception of the wierdness of Dio awakening the Joestar's Stand power across the entire family tree, I don't know if Stand power can be passed down like Hamon can. Also they can be combined, as shown with Old Joseph so one can use both and even combine techniques like using Hermit Purple vines as Hamon conductors. Hamon is better than Stands simply because it takes discipline to use Hamon, but anyone could have a stand. The upside to stands is that they can make excellent plot devices and allow enemies to appear from a short timeframe with unique abilities which is how the stories are so good.
I think it'd be a neat little call back if Jotaro ever met Giorno and saw Gold Experience's ability, he'd go something like: "Life energy, huh? Reminds me of an old matrial arts technique the old man told me about." And I like to think that GE is an evolution of Jonathan's Hamon ability
@@Lucien_M that doesn't really make sense... The World stops time itself not just people. Diego can also stop time with The World and he isn't a vampire.
Hamon should have totally been included in the later chapters, because Stands are able to be infused with Hamon. Imagine a stand like Harvest manipulating leaves and shit with Hamon!
The history and tactics surrounding Hamon is what made it interesting. It had bounded rules and specific purposes, but having those things opened the door to creative solutions to problems while remaining within those rules. It's the same reason why many artists choose to restrict themselves to a specific color palette rather than just trying to use any color that comes to mind; with color theory, consistency and compliment trump freedom and whim. Stands obviously have infinite potential because there are no rules, but with that comes the possibility for infinite jank, infinite ass-pulls, infinite deus ex machinas for both the good guys and bad. Examples include Jotaro and Dio basically having identical stands (which wasn't a thing before or since, correct me if I'm wrong) and Yoshikage Kira randomly getting a time-warp ability out of nowhere. Stands have no general rules (the range thing is broken multiple times), only rules specific to that stand, and then those rules too get broken or changed last-minute to increase the drama. "The enemy's stand can shoot infinite amounts of cum and is unbeatable, but as fortune would have it the clock reads 1 minute before midnight on September 30th, meaning in a matter seconds it will become November which means you can no longer nut, meaning... I win." I dunno, obviously you can take my opinion with a grain of salt as an anime-only dude, but as of P5, stands just don't have any magic left in them for me. You literally can't expect what a stand will be capable of, but without expectations, nothing can be surprising. Every stand reveal just leaves me blank-faced, since nothing can really be as obtuse, overpowered or janky as Gold Experience and its "turn my tooth into a jellyfish so I can drink piss" power.
"Kira getting a Time-warp ability out of nowhere" shows me that you know nothing about the characters only to surface level. Kira wanted to stay hidden, the Arrows can grant a transformation or another ability to use. Kira wanted no one to know his new identity, so he had bite the dust which explodes a person that knew his identity and reversed time to two hours. And Golden Experience is literally based on giving life, ANY life. You should've expected that a Stand with such ability can grant wonders, No?

It's understandable why Hamon is not used anymore, but it wouldn't be that weird to run into a Hamon user out in the wild. you dont need the main character to have it. Just occasionally have some descendant of the hamon users we'd known in the past show up to help or stumble through some part of the story. I mean even after Speedwagon died, his foundation still doing stuff.
It’s been a while since I watched the Hamon era, so I’m not sure how applicable this is to those fights, but I’ve noticed that Stand battles seem to often be written a bit like puzzles and mysteries for the characters and audience to solve, so I think how well the puzzle is crafted and how much sense the characters finding the solution makes are some of the determining factors in how good a fight is.
I feel like it would have been awesome to see star platinum use a hamon overdrive. Honestly Joseph, you guys were setting out to fight a vampire. Hamon is a hard magic system. Stand is a soft magic system. I do prefer how more direct hamon users were in fights than a stand user standing while their stand does all the work.
It's the opposite of that, stands are a hard magic system because each stand only has a base set of abilities that they are stuck with and cannot be trained to be made better. Hamon is a soft magic system because the rules are vague and relatively undefined and hamon can be trained to be made better, there are no clear set of boundaries with hamon like there are with stands.
@@joshuacunningham7910 Bro... A hard system is specifically based on a branching concept. Stand creation and variety is soft. The progression of the abilities of both are soft to some degree, even if individual stand rules are hard.
@@werh227 I don't know what you mean by "specifically based on a branching concept", but just because new stands are added does not mean that the whole magic system isn't hard as every stand that is introduced still follows the same hard magic system rules despite their abilities being different.
personally, both are good. when a character is using hamon, you're left with the anticipation of what crazy thing they're gonna attempt next. for stands, you're left thinking about how the user can use their ability in a certain situation.
I think Hamon made a lot more sense as the ability of choice when the primary antagonists were vampires or pillar men, both beings with a weakness to the sun. With subsequent antagonists all being human, I think the concept of Stands in which each is a reflection of the user's character makes far more sense.
in my opinion the "outsmarting" in the hamon seasons were so much more thought out and impressive. and while the stands are cool enough, they can also be confusing and there's no possibility for character growth.
Learning what your stand can do is a character growth but in shorter time. Jotaro learning his time ability while everyone around him is dying made the last fight in part 3 scale really well
@@atrius7141 but jotaro didn't really grow at all. he's the type who seems like he always had that ability but never needed to use it. its more like "i can do this now" to keep up the hype. and jonathan had no character at all, they ruined his character so much
Araki really found his voice when he came up with stands. He can be much more creative with his scenarios with them. Before that it was too much of "I outsmarted you", "You think so, but actually I outsmarted you", "Wow, I would be in trouble if I didn't come up with this outlandish plan", etc. The stand era still has some of that, but with the added element of figuring out the stand of the week it's not so prevalent. Also, the stands are already outlandish, so the outlandish solutions with them are not so out of place.

Hamon is a better concept and shows the hard work characters have to do. The problem with Hamon is that the power scaling isn't very good. Stands are individualism and there are no 2 stands the same. However the power scaling for stands is very varied as it basically is the definition of: built different.
That's what makes stands better power system. They are built different. Hamon is life energy, which as can be done in fun way but it's nothing really unusual in manga and anime, your go to magic powers that have no known boundaries and aren't super consistent. While with stands, each one is unique, there are certain rules but they usually serve more as guidelines as many stands actually are exception to some of them. Meaning that there can be done many unique abilities and designs of stands. The fact that for most cases they aren't just straight forward stronger stand = win, as it usually ends up in shounens shows that it's good power system. If hamon stayed there is big chance that it could end as this always scaling stuff, where character keeps on getting stronger and stronger and stronger. Stands rarely get upgrades like that meaning that it's actually user who needs to get better
@@blazeuchiha2314 yes because stands aren't simple power system where you simply train. You have to learn to use your abilities and in rare cases where stand actually gets stronger it's usually caused by character growth or over all bizarre nature of the series, at the same time it does not feel undeserved. My personal opinion is that training arcs or episodes are the worst things in the shounen mangas. Showing characters train and then become stronger is lazy way to portrait growth, because it often does not come with character development. I can excuse it in cases where character actually learns it's powers because of that, but just being put through grueling training often seems pointless and affects pace of the series. Imo better way to portrait growth is simply making character overcome another challenges, each one different and slightly more challenging. Which does happen through whole JoJo
@@mrszmatan2727 it depends for me on how the training is done to determine if its good or not. KNY training was good because it also builds on the characters story. But training like Kuroko or DBS was ass

I actually had this discussion with a friend earlier today and here’s what I told him:
1: Breathing techniques are an actual thing IRL both for martial arts and therapy amongst other things.
Jokes aside, the concept of Hamon was one of the reasons I quit smoking. Sounds silly, but inhaling burnt tobacco is sillier.
I actually liked the Hamon power, but I understand why Araki switched it. He wanted a more creative power system and he didn't wanna bring back undead characters.

"Stands make it so each user has their style of fighting, but every person is generally pretty narrow in their fighting capabilities."
I disagree with this one, there are so many stands that force the heros to beat them in a unsual way, and use their stands with creativity. Araki expands the possibilities of the main JoJos Stand, Jotaro is pretty straight foward but Josuke, Giorno and Jolyne have stands that can be used in different and creative ways
BUT, i wish we could see Hamon being used with stands, or at least, see Joseph use more Hamon in part 3 or 4.

@@mateusmarinho6941 Fair enough! I might've worded my thoughts poorly or simply be of another opinion than you XD

Like:
- In part 3, Joseph could've used hamon more as his primary battle mechanic having more fights with Joseph.
- in part 4, Joseph could've teaches some basic hamon to Josuke, giving a boost to crazy Diamond while metaphorically accepting Joseph as his dad.
- in part 5, some enemies could've been hamon users, also the gang could've visited the hamon temple from part 2 to awaken his hamon and enhance GE

Hamon: trainable, verrry trainable
Stands: Lmfao, my stand stronger than yours.
@@presence5692 Yeah, now that you mention it, Hamon is just "Sun Ki", isn't it. Stands were probably the best choice to make the series stand out from Chakra/Nen/Ki/Soul Energy/Mana.

BATMAN!
This
Totally. While the story is still around Hamon I felt it more realistic and engaging. Sure Stands are cool and full of possibilities but it just throw all logics out of the window which makes critical situation just seem less interesting because they could just pull something like TIME TRAVEL or sth and we will never question twice

Even if its for just one fight. Because that's kinda how most Stand fights start, "I need to figure out what X Stand does so I can beat it." and I feel characters would be so used to that mindset that they would be so confused and at a disadvantage fighting a Hamon user.

@@rogue4225 probably because it didn't get developed much
@@langleysenterprise5134 that's pretty much the reason.

Stands have no flexability
With Hamon it felt more like a fight between intelects, as the fighting style of each character was determined largely by themselves. With stands it feels more like a puzzle each side of a fight is trying to solve

@@yonielg6588 Homie pulled a whole plane.

Now I'm just imagining Jotaro learning Hamon and enhancing Star Platinum's combat effectiveness by using Hamon in combination with his stand.
What's so awesome about Stands is that they have limitless potential. You can have literally any kind of fight with them, they're just so versatile.
@@acceleratingfiction2959 You could in theory have stands that do what hamon does. You can't in theory have hamon do what stands do.

Also they can be combined, as shown with Old Joseph so one can use both and even combine techniques like using Hermit Purple vines as Hamon conductors. Imagine what one could do with a projectile Stand with Hamon, Emerald Splash Overdrive anyone?

Even “cowards” may have a stand, like Koichi because he had the potential in him and already some strength but repressed inside him, the more he grows, the stronger it gets; plus, you can be a “coward” but know how to fight when you’re cornered or decide to do smth, if you have that determination, too
The first and last points about stands, somewhat contradict each other.
Reminds me of an old matrial arts technique the old man told me about."
And I like to think that GE is an evolution of Jonathan's Hamon ability
It does make sense, maybe it does come from Jonathan's hamon.
If giorno has jonathan's DNA, then it might actually be possible that GE is a little toned down version of Hamon.
I'd like to think The World's time freezing ability is an extension of Dio(Brando)'s vampiric freezing ability

4:38 Araki during pt 5: "That's how mafia works."
I win."
I dunno, obviously you can take my opinion with a grain of salt as an anime-only dude, but as of P5, stands just don't have any magic left in them for me. You literally can't expect what a stand will be capable of, but without expectations, nothing can be surprising. Every stand reveal just leaves me blank-faced, since nothing can really be as obtuse, overpowered or janky as Gold Experience and its "turn my tooth into a jellyfish so I can drink piss" power.
somebody get this man writing on jojo we wanna see that stand
"Kira getting a Time-warp ability out of nowhere" shows me that you know nothing about the characters only to surface level. Kira wanted to stay hidden, the Arrows can grant a transformation or another ability to use. Kira wanted no one to know his new identity, so he had bite the dust which explodes a person that knew his identity and reversed time to two hours. And Golden Experience is literally based on giving life, ANY life. You should've expected that a Stand with such ability can grant wonders, No?
If you think about it Jonathan was the first one to do a punchy barrage

It's understandable why Hamon is not used anymore, but it wouldn't be that weird to run into a Hamon user out in the wild. you dont need the main character to have it. Just occasionally have some descendant of the hamon users we'd known in the past show up to help or stumble through some part of the story. I mean even after Speedwagon died, his foundation still doing stuff.
It’s been a while since I watched the Hamon era, so I’m not sure how applicable this is to those fights, but I’ve noticed that Stand battles seem to often be written a bit like puzzles and mysteries for the characters and audience to solve, so I think how well the puzzle is crafted and how much sense the characters finding the solution makes are some of the determining factors in how good a fight is.
and its just easier to make these puzzle fights with stands rather than hamon
I feel like it would have been awesome to see star platinum use a hamon overdrive. Honestly Joseph, you guys were setting out to fight a vampire. Hamon is a hard magic system.
Stand is a soft magic system.
I do prefer how more direct hamon users were in fights than a stand user standing while their stand does all the work.
Its a stand not a walk
its not called stand for no reason
It's the opposite of that, stands are a hard magic system because each stand only has a base set of abilities that they are stuck with and cannot be trained to be made better. Hamon is a soft magic system because the rules are vague and relatively undefined and hamon can be trained to be made better, there are no clear set of boundaries with hamon like there are with stands.
@@joshuacunningham7910 Bro... A hard system is specifically based on a branching concept. Stand creation and variety is soft.

I like to imagine in that thumbnail star platinum thinks he's explaining something but in reality it's just "ora ora ora ora ora ora ORA ORA ORA ora"
in my opinion the "outsmarting" in the hamon seasons were so much more thought out and impressive. and while the stands are cool enough, they can also be confusing and there's no possibility for character growth.
What about acts stands?
Learning what your stand can do is a character growth but in shorter time. Jotaro learning his time ability while everyone around him is dying made the last fight in part 3 scale really well
@@atrius7141 but jotaro didn't really grow at all. he's the type who seems like he always had that ability but never needed to use it. its more like "i can do this now" to keep up the hype. and jonathan had no character at all, they ruined his character so much
@@pendragon.-. they are rare
I agree
Araki really found his voice when he came up with stands. He can be much more creative with his scenarios with them. Before that it was too much of "I outsmarted you", "You think so, but actually I outsmarted you", "Wow, I would be in trouble if I didn't come up with this outlandish plan", etc. The stand era still has some of that, but with the added element of figuring out the stand of the week it's not so prevalent. Also, the stands are already outlandish, so the outlandish solutions with them are not so out of place.
I mean the point of stand battles is still to put smart your opponent it’s just more outlandish and fun.
That’s all of jojo, part 5 is full of those moments.
Jojo summarized
Aparently it wasnt akari, but his editor that suggested stands instead of hamon
Jojo part 2: *defeating much more powerful enemies through smarts, bluffing, and blind luck*
Part 3: *interesting enemy is introduced! doesn't matter star platinum stronger*
*particularly dangerous enemy is introduced that seems like it shouldn't be able to be simply overpowered! Doesnt matter star platinum is stronger*
*enemy is introduced with an ability designed to counter star platinum! Doesn't matter star platinum is stronger, pulling an ability out of its ass that counters the counter*
*Dio is an immortal magic super human vampire and his stand "the world" can fucking stop time! Doesn't matter star platinum can stop time now too and yup is still fucking stronger*
Joseph got away with a lot of bullshit sure, but that was his thing and atleast he was entertaining whilst he did it! It makes sense for him to be constantly out-thinking and predicting the moves of his enemies, whereas jotaro surviving being stabbed a hundred times by a yolked ass vampire because "i PuT rOlLeD uP mAgAzInEs UnDeR mY cLoThEs JuSt In CaSe" on TOP of being already op as hell felt like the plot sucking his dick
I was so disappointed that the most famous jojo turned out to be just another trench coated edgy teenager with op powers he never earned, that had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the plot by the actually interesting characters
Hamon is a better concept and shows the hard work characters have to do. The problem with Hamon is that the power scaling isn't very good. Stands are individualism and there are no 2 stands the same. However the power scaling for stands is very varied as it basically is the definition of: built different.
so its the same type of stand as star platinum
@@mrszmatan2727 yh but they never show the user training in the anime. you just see them getting power boosts from no where
@@blazeuchiha2314 yes because stands aren't simple power system where you simply train.
To me hamon being not used after part 2 just sells the fact that Joseph won and completely destroyed the threat of vampires
