I always thought that 1000cc naked bikes could only be enjoyed by 2 kind of people. First one is someone who want a bike that can do both street riding and track riding because sports bike are just not comfortable. Second one would be an absolute mad man who doesn't care about his well being or his license. But then I had the opportunity to test ride a GSX-S 1000 and something became obvious. It's super easy! It's really maneuverable at low speed, it's very light, it's stable. You don't even need to rev it high, you can pick a gear and it has grunt. If I had to describe this motorcycle with one word it would be effortless. Buy a GSX-S 1000 and be lazy, it's great.
I have a 2018. I love watching people ride it for the first time. 90% are very surprised by the power. Unless you are riding a 1000cc super sport, you will be shocked.
After 9000 rpm this think go nuts. It really needs quickshifter if you want shift properly. You need hold on your dear life at those top end revs and changing gears is really difficult. Accelaration is compareable to Super Duke 1290 R if you keep in that top part of revs.
Great, thorough review. I have this bike (2018 red/black naked) and came to ease the anxiety I got from not being able to ride it in the winter. I commute on it, and while certainly an overkill, also quite manageable around town. It can also tour nicely because of comfortable upright riding position and man, the power... It makes you addicted.
I get a kick out of people testing these bikes, saying they are crazy powerful, yet never hitting it's true power band... rev these bikes from 7-12k rpm... then you will feel it's true power.yes they have good torque down at 3-6k, test the bike properly at a track at all rpm ranges.
k5 to k8 actually, and arguably their best of the older R long stroke engines. Re-tuned of course for better low-mid-range with the ability to still go berserko after 8000rpm. Regardless of year even to this day there has been issues with fueling. Many (not all apparently) were running very lean (hunting at constant speed) and throttle snatch on/off gas often making mid corners a bit uncomfortable. Also my 2018z in peak hour traffic was an absolute pig. I watched several videos on this common problem. Re-flash that worked for many was not an option with regards to my warranty. The dealer was happy to fit a PC V and the results were night and day. The bike was mostly a pleasure to ride and once i fitted a 'Throttle Tamer' it was the bike it should have been. Ok so i spent a bit of money on after market bits and pieces, including exhaust/intake mods but the initial purchase cost was a few thousand dollars less. At least that is how i justified the extras. The stock Dunlop hoops are good and got 6000k then swapped to Conti RA 3's which are better in the wet and wearing much slower it appears. They don't start the traction control light as nearly as much as the Dunlops. It's a Suzuki after all so love em or hate i guess.
I don't know where you got that MSRP from but the non ABS is closer to $10k and the top blacked Z is $11k. You can easily find leftovers for well under that though. I paid around $10k OTD for my 2018 Z and I've seen some other colors go for $7k OTD. That's 150 hp for SV650 money! Insane.
Wow. Was that 82 MPH in 2nd gear. Awesome. Was looking at getting the MT-10 but now that I saw your video, I guess I will have to look at this bike also. Sometimes I see it on sale for way less than that 12,500 you show. I know it does not have rider modes, but has the traction modes which I just like. Is it throttle by wire? Nice vid though.
Nice review. I was at the shop today telling guy I was trying to decide what bike to buy, was leaning towards the cb650. He showed me this. I just started last summer and only have two months riding under me, and I learned on a little cbr300. I said are you crazy? I can’t get that!!? He said no no. You’ll be fine. It’s very manageable etc. Do you think it’s an appropriate bike for someone new?? Am I going to kill myself?? I mean I am a cautious and responsible driver and shit... But I’ve just never experienced that much power. It makes me nervous. What do you think?
I went from a 300 to a 1000 within a 3 month time frame and I haven’t died yet. But I know I’m very conservative and cautious with my bike.. as long as you have some common sense then you’d be fine but I’d advise being really careful
thatstheguy07 just keep in mind they are really ballsy ;) but every time you rip that throttle is like snorting a line of coke. Once you get a small bit of it you just want more and more until inevitably you take in a little bit more than you should have and you’re in a dangerous predicament
The Professional Dillweed Ive read a lotta ppl say that big litre bikes don’t like to go slow. How is it just driving around town? I’m in the city a lot. Wondering if it would be overkill just running around town in 2nd/3rd.
thatstheguy07 they don’t like to go slow... at all. But I’m able to commute on my MT-10 just fine. And 2-3rd gear is where all the torque is at so for cruising at 40-50 I’d be in 5th or 6th if I’m not in a hurry
It's as ugly as sin (to me) but that is not why i own one. The k5-k8 motor is bullet proof with the proven reliability of the long stroke gsx-r motor. You thought well when applying TC, even in mode one anti-wheelie works well. Take it past 8000rpm and it's just nuts. The TC light flickers near constantly 1st-3rd. In off mode you better have a long piece of road cause the front wheel will be mostly in the air. (your gonna need new forks seals frequently) It's suspension is down on the European bikes but good enough if setup tight. I got into a low slide at 140kmh on some loose gravel from an adjoining road and TC saved the day. I love my 1000z not for looks but for being so flick-able, comfortable and confidence inspiring. Not to mention the much lower cost in purchase and maintenance cost. With a full Yoshi it's sounds great too. Oh yea i lane split/filter when commuting to work like there is no tomorrow.Nice vid.
It's odd how people have such opposing opinions on the looks of this bike. I think it looks AWESOME, which i why i bought it. I think the entire GSX-S lineup looks awesome. Yes it does have that transformer-ish look to me, but i love that about it. But i do agree on, performance-wise. it's is an awesome bike to own. It does everything perfectly. I get a ton a compliments on it when i ride mine. Certainly not "ugly as sin"... but to each their own. Enjoy the ride!
@@Gexxon My opinion like yours is totally subjective. Like you said, 'but to each their own'.I also get plenty of public interest when out and about but hasn't changed my mind on looks. When i'm riding all i see mostly is the road ahead and when i get off i'm not doting on the bike's looks. Front on it kind of reminds me of a Bat with the positional LEDS it's fangs and i think that's kind of cool (but still ugly to me). Enjoy your ride also.
Hey “teebee” what a amazing bike right!! I absolutely love my 2016 gsx-s1000 and got it in the triton blue metallic...have had lots of compliments on it especially from chicks about the color😉

Yes, it is terrible, I have a 2017 and got a reflash on it and it still isn't what it should be. Not really confidence-inspiring in a corner with its light switch like throttle. Other than the throttle it is awesome though.
