Yep, that Half-Time Shuffle (Hi-Hat & Snare) with the Afro-Cuban 3-2 Son Clave ("Bo Diddley beat" as Jeff calls it) on the bass drum is one of the most legendary drum grooves of all-time!!! I have Jeff's instructional DVD where he describes the groove and talks about other drummers (John Bonham's "Fool in the Rain" and Bernard Purdie on Steely Dan's "Home At Last"...I think) that inspired his development of groove!!!

A criminally-underrated band. They're so preposterously talented people never truly appreciated them. But fellow musicians, from head-bangers to classical aficionados, always did.
The first vocalist is guitarist Steve Lukather (in the sunglasses). The second vocalist is Bobby Kimball. Lukather outro guitar solo shreds. If you want to listen to another one where Lukather does the lead vocal, I think one of their best is "I'll Be Over You", which in my opinion also features one of the best line lyrically ever written. Plus it features a BIG NAME singer making a guest appearance on backing vocals.
This band started in the late 70's & has been performing for over 40 years now. They mix all types of genres in their sound. They have had some great hits such as "Hold The Line", "Africa", "Rosanna", "I'll Supply The Love", "Georgy Porgy", "99", "Make Believe", "Stranger In Town", "I'll Be Over You", "Without Your Love", "Stop Loving You", "Pamela" etc.
Back then they were the who's who of studio musicians having played literally on hundreds of tracks. The drummer, late Jeff Porcaro told a story in an interview. The producer for the session wanted him to play in certain style, then demonstrating it using an album track. Jeff Porcaro had stated that it was himself playing. It has been said that the idea to form Toto was conceived during the sessions for Boz Scaggs' album "Silk Degrees" where Porcaro, David Paich and David Hungate played, Paich also doing the arrangements for the album.
I know you know about the band Three Dog Night....well something sad has happened.....Yesterday...the world lost a brilliant talent in the producer, engineer and musician Richie Podolor. Richie was an amazing musical guide for Three Dog Night from its very first record at MCA and he continued producing for us right on through to our new album, that is just about to be released. Both of you are correct. Patrick Swayze is in this video, and yes, he was also in the outsiders which had the greasers (the look of the male dancers do look like they are from the movie outsiders). The video is based off the musical West Side Story with the Jets and Sharks.
@@zayoutlaw I was just wondering if that was her. Man, I've been listening to this since the 80s and I didn't have a clue. She was really pretty. I don't recall ever seeing her in other movies.
Jeff's shuffle is a combination of three drumming styles he incorporated into the Rosanna shuffle: The main shuffle beat is from Bernard Purdie. Jeff is a fan of the Bernard Purdie shuffle he used on Steely Dan's Home At Last. The second part of the shuffle is from John Bonham's Fool In The Rain, and the final part is the bass drum beat from Bo Diddley. Those three combined created the Rosanna shuffle Jeff plays.
The Porcaro brothers Jeff drums, Mike bass, Steve keys/synths, grew up with in studio sessions with their father a studio drummer. Steve is the only one left we lost Mike and Jeff. A real blow to the music world. Jeff was not only one of the best drummers ever he just so fkn fun to watch.
Written about Rosanna Arquette! I feel him in this song... I, too, was crushing hard on her in the early and mid- 80's, especially after seeing the movie Desperately Seeking Susan. Great song, great groove, and top musicianship.
It isn’t really about her. David Paich wrote it about a highschool crush of his. His Toto bandmate Steve Porcaro happened to be dating Rosanna Arquette at the time, so Paich borrowed her name for the song, because it fit. But Steve does play a mean synth solo on it, that’s for sure.
The dancer , Cynthia Rhodes appeared in Dirty Dancing. She is an incredible dancer. Great video of a great Band. "Hold The Line" is one of my favorites.

Since Dee hasn't seen Westside story, she is thinking of the Outsiders which takes place in 1960s where the Greasers and Socs were rumbling. But the video is inspired by the 1961 movie West Side Story. With the Sharks and the Jets dancing their rumble scenes. The character Ponyboy played by C. Thomas Howell was in the Outsiders. Patrick Swayze was the oldest brother Darry. Ralph Macchio was Johnny in the movie. When Chod reacted to Ralph Macchio and said he didn't realize Ralph had been acting since he was young (or something like that) I was shocked, because Chod mentioned Cobra Kai. Yes, I'm not letting it go. 😁 The actors at that time in the movie were popular. Tom Cruise and Rob Lowe are the ones that young folks like you might know from today. I was excited when that movie came out, because the book by S.E. Hinton was one of my favorites. The Greasers and Soc's were the opposing "gangs" in the movie, The Outsiders. Patrick Swayze played Darry, Pony Boy's oldest brother. The rival gangs rumbled in the movie and were always at odds with each other. West Side Story was totally different. The Jets and Sharks were rival gangs in that movie. There are similarities.
The lead singer for Toto Bobby Kimball sang on this and was in the band named SS Fools which were the backing band for Three Dog Night. Use to play this song on the radio back in the day...a fun song and good listen.
Yes, Patrick Swayze was in the Outsiders and many other films. Female Dancer is actress/dancer Cynthia Rhodes (Staying Alive, Dirty Dancing) who eventually married Richard Marx. Toto is easily my all time favorite group and Lukather is nearly beyond words!

Eddie Van Halen plays the solo, but Lukather is playing all the other guitar parts. The dancer in the video was the blonde in Dirty Dancing that became pregnant.
Definitely West Side Story inspired scenes with"Jets"(one its gangs) written on the wall. There's a video out there on playing that drum shuffle as it is hard and unique.
The version that you watched was a live concert in the 90s. Both Jeff Picard (Drummer) and Bobby Kimball (Lead Singer)-Had passed away. This video had all of the original band members. One of my favorite songs of all time!
The drummer Jeff Porcaro had unfortunately passed away too young! Bobby Kimball is alive and well and has performed again with them in their many incarnations!
It probably was based on both. West Side Story was made in the early 60's actually it was about 2 gang rivals and a girl from one gang fell in love with the boy from the other gang and it was forbidden, and it was a musical. It was very popular
I've never seen "The Outsiders", but this definitely gives me a "West Side Story" vibe (the 1961 version, I haven't seen the recent one) except with Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) from "Grease" instead of Maria (Natalie Wood). But then, I'm an old far..., ehr, dude. Great song and choreography, especially the young woman, classical ballet and modern dance mix.
Great reaction!! Both of you are half right. This is a take on West Side Story and The Outsiders. The "greasers" and " socies"( pronounced sòshes) were the rivals. West Side Story was about the conflict between two people of different races/ heritage falling in love and the friction caused by both sides.
You and your wife should watch the movie "Desperately Seeking Susan" with Rosanna Arquette (the Rosanna in this song) it also stars Madonna with songs by her. Great Movie!
Just saw Toto last week. Not all original but Steve Lukather knows how to put a band together and keep that music tight. This video was based off of West Side Story. Michael Jackson who was very good friends of Toto had asked if he could use that theme to make the Beat It video. Also several of members played a big part on the Thriller album. Such a great band.
Chod...Dee's right...the face off of the gangs is very reminiscent of Pony Boy face off in the outsiders...and yes...the dancing was similar to west side story...😉
Jeff P was one of the greatest drummers of all time. He's the main reason this song works. West Side Story is what inspired the video.

The 80's were awesome.
The dancer in this video also starred in Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayzee.
You both are correct :) Outsiders & West Side Story
rip Jeff porcaro one of the greatest drummer i nmusic history.
I love this song
If a song is named for a woman, you know it’s gonna be good. Roseanna, Joanna, Amanda, Beth, Roxanne, Melissa…
Great Reaction!!! Now, ya'll stop fighting about "The Outsiders" and "Westside Story" in front of the child!!! LOL
The girl dancing is actually in the movie dirty dancing.
Who would have thought Ron Jeremy had such a great voice.
Roseanna is about a real (famous) person and their very real relationship. So now do Hold The Line
And as lead vocals: The Mandalorian
She might be thinking of M.J's video "Beat it"
Girl goodbye is my fav.
Patrick Swazie is one of the dancers and the girl is from dirty dancing. You are right he is from the outsiders.
Great reaction!! Both of you are half right. This is a take on West Side Story and The Outsiders. The "greasers" and " socies"( pronounced sòshes) were the rivals. West Side Story was about the conflict between two people of different races/ heritage falling in love and the friction caused by both sides.
Song i heard was supposed to be about Rosanna Arquette
The girl is from the movie Dirty Dancing.
Such a great band.
ok Chod i have to see your Wife react to The J.Geils Band Serves You Right To Suffer Live or Give It To Me lol
Chod...Dee's right...the face off of the gangs is very reminiscent of Pony Boy face off in the outsiders...and yes...the dancing was similar to west side story...😉
You need headphones guys.
Jeff Porcaro is one of the all time best drummers
