Eddie Van Halen said that that TOTO is the most technically proficient band there's ever been. Everyone of them are great studio musicians that have played on hundreds of famous songs. And lead by humble guitar virtuoso, singer, songwriter, and nice guy Steve Lukather.
I mean, they are godly. But have you ever heard of Steely Dan?
@@veralterung5627 Of course.
@@veralterung5627 Well David Paich and specially and most notably Jeff Porcaro worked with Steely Dan. Current Steely Dan drummer Keith Carlock was also a drummer with Toto in 2015
When Bobby Kimball starts singing, I get chills, he's so smooth and has an awesome, clean vocal range! Not too many people know, The members of Toto, started out as studio musicians: Toto Was The Studio Band For Steely Dan, Boz Scaggs, and Michael Jackson.
David Lee Roth said they were the best freeze dried band ever. Said that's not bad. It's just that nobody can ever recognize the guys in person unless they're onstage as a group. He said that's a good way to be famous
Nothing from Toto ever gets old! Some of the best musicians in history!
You heard it folks from ol Honest Abe! Some of THE best!!! 😊🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽
I agree and love the song 99
Yes! No music sounds like this today!
Absolutely the truth!
Well said!
Can we take a moment to recognize the amazing stick work of the late Jeff Porcaro? Dude was always fire and always dead nuts on beat. (RIP, JP!)
Jeff's half-time shuffles ... 💯
👍👍👍
Purdy shuffle.
JP = LEGEND
One of the best
This song won a Grammy. Toto crossed so many barriers of rock, pop, jazz. Fantastic group.
its a fireworks show...has everything.
No one seems to have mentioned that the title of this song, Rosanna, was literally about the well-known actress Rosanna Arquette, who the keyboardist Steve Porcaro was dating at the time, Porcaro didn’t write the song lyrics, Toto lead David Paich wrote them, because Porcaro wanted a song about her! Such a cool band, oozing with talent!!
Another thing is the lady as the Rosanna character for the video is Lisa Niemi the widow of Patrick Swayze
Thank you @GloryCarrier22. I was waiting to see if anyone mentioned that fact!
@@robertgreen6433 The woman in the video is Cynthia Rhodes, who was in the movie "Dirty Dancing". Patrick Swayze himself is in the video, however. He's the guy in the red letter jacket, who takes his jacket off and goes face to face with one of the other dancers.
@GloryCarrier22: David Paich has said that the song was about one of his first high school loves, and he's also said that it was about "three girls I knew, all rolled into one." He used the name Rosanna, which happened to belong to the girl who "was going at the time with Steve Porcaro, my best friend", because it "just fit perfectly." After he met Arquette, he said, "I just stole her name and stuck it on there.” At that time, in 1982, Arquette wasn't a well-known actress. The band members have at times in the past expressed some irritation that Arquette claimed the song was about her. Bobby Kimball said, “It was just an opportune moment for her to grab the brass ring and run with it. She was just starting her career, and the song was so big that she went on several talk shows and said it was about her. But I can tell you that it wasn’t. David’s line was always that he just used the name because it fitted into the song. Then she came into the picture and claimed it.”
@@robertgreen6433 Cynthia Rhodes, but a strong resemblence
One of the best drum introductions in music history. Back then when songs were created by bands oozing with musical talents and Toto was no exception.
It has its own name, obviously I guess "The Roseanna Shuffle." Big test for even really good drummers. Bohham of Zep had a shuffle that many drummers worked on, adapted.
@@jamesbenoit5252 Jeff Porcaro's creation (RIP, Jeff).
Jeff Porcaro, RIP, created this groove. In fact, Porcaro pretty much was the foundation of the 80s sound. He played with so many popular groups then. He is missed.
Toto was the house band, if you will, for the entire Thriller album! They are all amazing! They are musicians, musicians! Saw them live 3 times! They never disappoint!
They wrote a bunch of the songs on Thriller as well. Dudes are amazing
@@tim1843 Toto members only wrote one song on Thriller and that was Human Nature which was written by Steve Porcaro. Luke plays on Thriller, Human Nature and The Girl is Mine
One of the greatest drum grooves ever!! R.I.P the untouchable Jeff Porcaro
Guitarist Steve Lukather did a "zero take solo" on the song "Running With the Night" by Lionel Richie. In a nutshel, Lukather was playing along with the song to get a feel for it. Unknowingly, the record producer already hit the record button. At the end of the segment where the solo point was over, the producer stopped rolling. Lukather said to the producer "I think I'm ready." The producer replied "That was the take." Pure spontaneous beauty!
Cool trivia!
He also provide that funky guitar on "Beat It". There is that short solo by Eddie Van Halen but the rest is Steve Lukather.
Number one rule of recording sessions: NEVER STOP ROLLING
Seriously??
Damn, gonna have to go listen to that song again!
The drums in this song are famous amongst percussionists. the "Rosanna Shuffle" is recognized as one of the more difficult and coolest beats in rock/pop.
its actually the Purdie Shuffle
Was actually from bernard purdie, which was known as the purdie shuffle.
@@churthebol8054 Technically it's not. Porcaro himself said that the Rosanna halftime shuffle was a mix of the Purdy shuffle and a few other artists, with his own spin on it. They're all halftime shuffles with different variants on where certain drums are placed within the rhythm.
@@cinnamonrollypoly John Bonham's Fool In The Rain shuffle, derived from the Purdie shuffle, plus Bo Diddley's bass drum beat help create the Rosanna half time shuffle. Jeff breaks down the segments of the shuffle on a video found on UA-cam.

For sure, I saw him at Coney Island with his band..... about 6 years ago.... he was there on the bill with Dennis DeYoung and Lou Gramm......
RIP Jeff Porcaro (the drummer) he played on hundreds of songs - one of the most sought-after session musicians ever.
Legendary drummer Jeff Porcaro with one of the greatest shuffle grooves in recorded history. He makes it sound easy, but this groove is so complex. There's a solo drums version available here on UA-cam. So many ghost notes in his playing. RIP
Before the age of the Internet it took me 2 years to learn how to play the "Rosanna Shuffle" on my trap set by ear...
Absolutely legendary, appears as a session player on so many other great songs too, "Mother" by Pink Floyd, Springsteen's "Human Touch", obviously so many more. Massive loss to the whole music community with his passing. Have been learning what I can myself from some of the old instructional videos he recorded that are available on UA-cam.
La bateria de Porcaro suena potente!!!
@@asalvatsescuche Toto y la canción hydra.
This was Billboard's #1 song of 1982. Years later it was revealed that it was written about Rosanna Arquette. Such a great song!
Actually I think it was Physical by Olivia Newton John but this song won a Grammy and was a huge radio hit
Believe it or not, this song never made #1, but Africa did.
No it wasn't written about her.
One of the best groups of all time. They are severely talented. Hold the line gets me so pumped up
the musicians in this band played on pretty much every song and album in the mid 70s til the end of the 80s. that guitar player is all over thriller, the keyboard player wrote human nature, the drummer is probably on over 1000 records
Toto was the pinnacle of music back in the 80's - so versatile & creative because of incredible skills/technique. They're played on everything from rock, R&B, funk, to global, smooth jazz, & adult contemporary stations - nobody else has done this in music history at the level Toto has - absolute legends!
Toto is one of the best live bands ever. They put on one hell of a show.
The most underrated bands ever. They are all musical geniuses and played on the best of the best studio albums across a 20 year span. The go to musicians for other musicians. They wrote songs for other bands. The keyboardist (1 of 3 Porcaro brothers in the band) wrote Human Nature for Michael Jackson and many more number ones for other artists, i love Toto thanks for sharing! ❤️
Was written for Rosanna Arquette, an actress from the 70’s and 80’s. One of the band members dated her.
I once told my drum teacher that i thought this song was hard to play. His reply "you think it's hard?! I think it's impossible congrats you're a better drummer than me"! Can't get enough of this song!
Jeff Porcaro was an absolute monster, god, his drum fills were from another world.
@@yoteca His groove, timing, feeling is absolutely mindblowing!
Dude, I even found a video of UA-cam vid of Jeff Porcaro explaining how he Frankensteined that beat from LedZep, Bernard Purdie, and the Bo Diddley shuffle. He explained so simply and perfectly.....and I still can't play this shit lol. That man was just born to sit behind a drum kit, such a great piece of music.
While the Rosanna Halftime shuffle is great, it's actually not that hard to play once you get the muscle memory of the rhythm. If I can play it after two months of practice, then most people can probably do it if they put their heads to it in far less time.
It genuinely makes me happy to see people experience and enjoy something I fell in love with such a long time ago.
This was a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE hit at the time. Truly one of their best. The drum groove (among drummers) is legendary. Glad you enjoyed.
TOTO is just an amazing group of real musicians.
I met Toto in 1979. Hung out for several hours back stage at the California World Music Festival ... L.A. Colosseum. One of the most talented bands EVER. Steve and Bobby share vocals on this tune. Steve's guitar work is phenomenal on every song he does.
Isn’t it Steve Lukather and Bobby Kimball singing on this?
That must have been a lifetime experience, crazy!! I love to read these stories, thanks for sharing.
So cool to get to meet them! I met Boston in the early 70's. I was think 9 0r 10. They were signing autographs a Peaches Record store near my house. I knew sort of who they were. It was quite a few years later that I was aware how awesome it was to be able to meet them. I also got all their autographs, but my brother stole them. Jerk.
You can never go wrong with TOTO, they are truly an elite band!!! Well done with this reaction RSR...Well done indeed!!! "FIRE" to the bone!!!
Toto had some of the best musicians ever. This is a fabulous song.
The feel. Toto is all about feel. Funk, rock, R&B or jazz, you get it all.
The 2 Ballads that Toto did were amazing!! “ I’ll Be Over You” and “ I Won’t Hold You Back”
So good!
Definitely I'll Be Over You...one of my all time favourite songs
@@virginiastephens7831 Mine too.
They have a hell of lot more ballads, but yeah... those are my favorites too, and adding to those "I Will Remember" from the Tambu album too, which it always make tear up because Luke wrote it for Jeff. Also David Paich is one of my role models on the piano/keys...
My favorite is "I will remember you" from the Tambu album.
Saw these guys live in 1989. They had all their instruments turned toward the audience so we could see everything they were playing. Absolutely all the keyboard parts were played live, no sequencers, even on tunes like 'Africa'. To this day, it remains the most amazing performance I've seen.
FYI The dancer in red is Cynthia Rhodes. She was also Penny in Dirty Dancing and Tina in Flashdance, and is FANTASTIC! Thanks for another great reaction! Cheers!
And is Married to or Was, to RICHARD MARX!
@@chazrjr And for a short time was the female vocalist of Animotion after Astrid Plane left. She is fabulous!
And the guy in Red is Patrck Swayze. Jonny from Dirty Dancing.
@@PrinceJediMaster Wow! Never noticed that. Thanks! (Too busy watching Cynthia, I guess. LOL)
@@charlesharris9692 can definitely understand that...lol.
Precision playing from a group of very gifted studio musicians....it doesn't get much better in this genre.
“I’ll be over you” HAS to be next!
Speaking about the musicianship of the band members, I listened to an interview with Steve Lukather and David Paich and they were asked about the band's rehearsal habits. They said they never really rehearsed. They would just go into the studio and play and that except for the horns, which were added later, that the recorded version of Rosanna was the second take of the song and the instrumental section after the lyrics end was just them jamming spontaneously at the end of the song.
They are known for their high production values. You need to hear "99". That was my first exposure to them in the 70's.
I think the directional changes in the structure is what a lot of older people miss. When the song is over you feel like you went somewhere.
Perfectly said. This as normal I miss music of my youth
The thing for me that always set this song apart as a classic is the very subtle, almost unnoticeable slap-bass in the chorus. Every single change and flair in the song is phenomenal but that slap-bass is almost hidden in the background but does so much to accent the chorus into the classic sound that Rosanna has.
Toto was a great band with great musicians! A great introduction to this genre. You are now ready for some Steely Dan! The kings of this genre! Check out the songs Black Cow, Hey Nineteen, Don't Take Me Alive, Kid Charlemagne, Do It Again, Haitian Divorce, The Caves Of Altimira, Aja, Home At Last, Green Earrings, Deacon Blues, and soooooo many more! This is one of the greatest groups with a who's who of the greatest all star musicians to ever do it! Jump on the train and you'll forever be a fan! 💯
They haven't done Steely Dan yet? Unfathomable! They're missing out!
Wow, ya! They need to play some Steely Dan. Good call.
Actually, even though I love Steely Dan. The true forefathers are the group Traffic. The album Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Is one of my favorite albums. The instrumentals and a young Steve Windoow. Classic.
"Any World (That I'm Welcome To)" is my favorite. And "My Old School" is fantastic and very accessible to someone new to Steely Dan.
Yes Steely Dan! The Royal Scam album is a real gem!
This is one of the greatest pop songs ever composed. It's a perfect pop symphony.
Greatest musicians ever!
Perfection.
They were all top top sessionists before they all got together and formed this musically perfect band.
Every one of them is a high roller in their field.
That's why I love this band guys, because they are so versatile. Their songs extend from rock, heavier rock, prog, to R&B, funk, soul, jazz, pop, beautiful balads, and they even have some songs with some reggae flavours. They can do everything!
It stuns me to see young people finally hear great music.
In case it hasn't been mentioned, the pretty blonde dancer was the lead female dance instructor in Dirty Dancing.
That is Cynthia Rhodes, who was in Dirty Dancing and other films. She was married to Richard Marx for many years.
The members were pretty much all studio musicians, who have to be good to be able to walk into a studio and play what's required. They got together and formed this band.
They are true professionals. A collection of studio artists, "Hired guns", that said "Hey...we can do this ourselves We don't have to let some given star put their name on our work". Real pros long before they became a group.
Hearing this takes me back the hopeful young nights of early teens. Cruisin'...in a small town's main street or around a huge mall in the big city...this song playin' on warm summer nights.
Senior year of high school...this song played everywhere!! Great song!
As many have mentioned, some of the best musicians in the biz. Drummer Jeff Porcaro (RIP) was known the 'man with the golden groove'. All of my drummer buddies loved him and as a guitar player Toto's Steve Lukather has always been one of my favorites.
I attended a music college in Boston in the 90's, full of mostly snobby jazz players. When TOTO came to town they all went to see them. Rock wasn't normally their thing but ....respect! I've seen them several times since then, always a great show.
Berklee College of Music?
@@samuraienterprises9802 Yes
@@GuitarTerraYT Cool school!
Berkley??
@@woodysdrums8083 Yes Berklee. Berkley with a 'Y' is in California
Best guitar outro ever. I saw them live in 1984 as my first rock concert ever.
It is such an amazing guitar outro I get goosebumps everytime I hear it.
Toto IS so fire! Such a complete sound and the production. They were a super-group and they always captured the best grooves and arrangements.
That outro solo by Steve Lukather is legendary. Fantastic guitar work!
Toto sounds so awesome and does such widely diverse types of sounds because they are a group of studio musicians that got together to do their own music, so you've definitely heard them on some of your most favorite songs. They definitely have the background required to make songs that sound so good. Some other songs by them that you would like are 99, I'll Be Over You, I Won't Hold You Back, Pamela (my favorite) and Stop Loving You.
Oh, I forgot to mention, the female dancer is Cynthia Rhodes, Richard Marx's ex-wife, who played Penny in "Dirty Dancing", and was the lead singer of the second incarnation of the band Animotion. And the background dancer who looks like Patrick Swayze? Yeah, that's really him.
She was also in the movie Flash dance in 1983 and Staying Alive with John Travolta I think about 1986?
Speaking of Richard Marx... WAY past time to listen to his pitch perfect vocals!!!!

This was always my fav Toto song....the beat is so awesome.
Welcome to the Toto family! Best band ever!
The members of Toto were some of the best studio musicians at the time. They decided to form their own band. Btw, the horn players are the guys from Chicago.
The best studio musicians of their era came together to form Toto. These are the guys who played behind Michael Jackson on "Thriller".
Toto rocks. Such a passionate song!
thank you very much guys for react on Toto this is just one of the gifted groups from late 70S and grew up stronger and became a legendary group with their iconic songs I'm strongly suggest 99 it's also a mega hit
One of my favorites from Toto is Pamela. Georgie Porgy is another one, but there isn't a bad Toto song in my opinion. I have seen them live a few times in the last 15 years or so and it is always so fun.
Georgie Porgy is a must for sure
Pamela is one of my favorites, along with 99.
You posted 3 of my favorite all time songs today. Thank you!
Best group of musicians ever. These guys were all studio cats. They can play literally anything
This is one of my favorites.
Everything about this song is fire 🔥 but that bass line tho!!
You get the impression that they were so enjoying doing this song, they didn't want to stop! and the virtuosity in the jam.WOW!
I never get tired of listening to this song. It is just incredibly great.
"I'll Be Over You"...its a ballad and beautiful.
Their instrumental score for the end title credits , for 1984 "Dune" film is awesome! They did most the film's score throughout the film too. Yes they're very talented musicians.
My cousin introduced this song to me on a road trip in the summer of 1982 - he was in college, I was in the sixth grade. He passed away this past Saturday. Rest In Peace, Shane, and thank you for being awesome.
Toto are studio musicians who formed a band. So the best of the best! Best skill level ever
Yeay!!!!! TOTO is a group of session musicians who decided to form a band....all good musicians and song writers. Try "99" next!
Love Toto makes me smile whenever I hear them. Amber you need to listen to Billy Vera live singing “At This Moment”. Talk about horns. Sax is crazy!,,,
I read somewhere that someone is quoted as saying, “Billy helped a lot of out-of-work horn players find jobs again thanks to his big hit!” I wish I could remember the exact quote! I think the quote was in the linear notes of the CD, but not sure.
Billy Vera, thank you.
A SUPER song by them that flew under the radar is "99"
That's actually my favorite Toto song.
Great song.
That song always makes me smile, because in the UK a '99' is a tasty soft-serve ice cream cone with a little chocolate bar in it. And no one knows why it's called a 99, it just is! 😄
@@mimimusick9734 Wish I could get one, or even 100!!!!!!!!
"99" is also my favorite Toto song. I just looked up and watched the video a few days ago. It's great too.
Toto is one of my favorites, as is this song!! Ty for your reaction!
I was kickin’ this in 1983! Glad it still puts a smile on the young pup’s faces!
One of the most underrated bands, Period!! The fact Toto is not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame leaves me dumbfounded. Some of these musicians have collaborated with Michael Jackson and so many more. I’ll Be Over You and Till the End are 2 of my favorite Toto songs. Also Paula Abdul, before she became famous, was in the music video for Till the End.
should be in for Africa alone.
They didn't suck up to the publisher of Rolling Stone Magazine. Therefore, he kept them out of the HOF.
RRHoF is a joke! Period the end.
To say that the R&R HOF is a political entity is an understatement. For Toto not being in there is the BIGGEST slap in the face for musicians everywhere. After all, how many artist are in the Hall due to the session musicianship contributions of the Toto members. THIS IS BULL!
That’s crazy that they aren’t in RnR Hall YET!!
Yesssssssssssss !!!! My favorite song ever (Crowded House) now Rosanna 👍🏼
The Porcaro brothers. Pure legends.
Incredible musicians!!! Soo much more than “rock” musicians. All have educations in music history and are beyond proficient in their instruments. Classicaly trained
I’ll Be Over You, 99, Saint George & the Dragon, I’ll Supply The Love, I Won’t Hold You Back, Stop Loving You…gosh, there’s wayyyy too many hits of theirs to write down lmao this band is made of the musician’s musicians. I’m so glad y’all got to Rosanna. It’s such a good song ! Some upbeat rock with a jazzy vibe thrown in right before the big chorus. Definitely a favorite of mine. Y’all seriously make the days go by a lot easier 😄
Fun fact: the little bluesy jam at the end was all entirely improvised on the spot during recording. If I remember correctly, instead of ending with the chorus, they let the tape run and the band went for it.
Each one of them, great musicians!! Love Toto!! Never gets old! 🎸🎤🎶💜 Thx for reacting!
I remember this from some VHS compilation (an official one) I got as a kid around 1990. It also had Quiet Riot "Cum on Feel the Noize", The Romantics "Talking in Your Sleep", Cyndi Lauper "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and 1 or 2 others. I pretty much wore the tape out!
Just a masterwork of range!
Toto's hit got it's name from actress Rosanna Arquette, who was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro at the time. "Rosanna" was written by band leader David Paich, who was always looking for good ideas for lyrics
Steve Porcaro, not David.

Somebody probably mentioned this, but this song was written about Rosannah Arquette.
What a fantastic Drummer Jeff was RIP
Check out the male dancer(thug) in the Red jacket. That's Patrick Swayzi (sic) of Dirty Dancing. His early years
Super band. Amazing musicians and many great songs. Rosanna is epic!
Love drummer Jeff Pocaro’s shuffle throughout this song: combo of John Bonham on Fool in the Rain and Bernard Purtie’s shuffle!
Toto became a retreat for the best of the best studio musicians.
This drum riff is arguably one of the best of all time. Any accomplished drummer has the Rosanna shuffle in his arsenal.
And used lots of profanity and developed a shit ton of gray hair leaning it too lol
The Rosanna drum groove and fills are done with so much feel and so deep in the pocket that while many attempt to play these drum parts, few master them.
Love, love this song. My first taste of the band and still as awesome as the first time.
Wothout a doubt, the greatest rock band of all time 🤙🤙🤙
this is one of the more intense drumlines, called the Rosanna Shuffle by the end your arm is ready 2 fall off...haha...peace
I love your reactions, guys!! Does a heart good to see how much your enjoying these classic groups from our era. I promise you: Toto’s ‘I Won’t Hold You Back’ is incredible, and it’ll always stick with you. 💜
Thanks for your reaction. Two other great songs by Toto you should check out are "Pamela", and "I'll be over you".
Each Toto component was a major player in the 80s music industry. Almost all top 10 songs of the decade and even the 90s decade have been played, produced and recorded by some and mostly all Toto members
The dancer in the video was also in "Dirty Dancing" and "Staying Alive." And it goes without saying that Toto is ALWAYS a great idea!
