While the Rosanna Halftime shuffle is great, it's actually not that hard to play once you get the muscle memory of the rhythm. If I can play it after two months of practice, then most people can probably do it if they put their heads to it in far less time.
Saw these guys live in 1989. They had all their instruments turned toward the audience so we could see everything they were playing. Absolutely all the keyboard parts were played live, no sequencers, even on tunes like 'Africa'. To this day, it remains the most amazing performance I've seen.
the musicians in this band played on pretty much every song and album in the mid 70s til the end of the 80s. that guitar player is all over thriller, the keyboard player wrote human nature, the drummer is probably on over 1000 records
Toto sounds so awesome and does such widely diverse types of sounds because they are a group of studio musicians that got together to do their own music, so you've definitely heard them on some of your most favorite songs. They definitely have the background required to make songs that sound so good. Some other songs by them that you would like are 99, I'll Be Over You, I Won't Hold You Back, Pamela (my favorite) and Stop Loving You.
The thing for me that always set this song apart as a classic is the very subtle, almost unnoticeable slap-bass in the chorus. Every single change and flair in the song is phenomenal but that slap-bass is almost hidden in the background but does so much to accent the chorus into the classic sound that Rosanna has.
FYI The dancer in red is Cynthia Rhodes. She was also Penny in Dirty Dancing and Tina in Flashdance, and is FANTASTIC! Thanks for another great reaction! Cheers!
I remember this from some VHS compilation (an official one) I got as a kid around 1990. It also had Quiet Riot "Cum on Feel the Noize", The Romantics "Talking in Your Sleep", Cyndi Lauper "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and 1 or 2 others. I pretty much wore the tape out!
That's why I love this band guys, because they are so versatile. Their songs extend from rock, heavier rock, prog, to R&B, funk, soul, jazz, pop, beautiful balads, and they even have some songs with some reggae flavours. They can do everything!
They are true professionals. A collection of studio artists, "Hired guns", that said "Hey...we can do this ourselves We don't have to let some given star put their name on our work". Real pros long before they became a group.
That's one thing that we had in our music back in the day is that you didn't know what you were going to get, it made you listen to the hole song. Great music.
Toto was a great band with great musicians! A great introduction to this genre. You are now ready for some Steely Dan! The kings of this genre! Check out the songs Black Cow, Hey Nineteen, Don't Take Me Alive, Kid Charlemagne, Do It Again, Haitian Divorce, The Caves Of Altimira, Aja, Home At Last, Green Earrings, Deacon Blues, and soooooo many more! This is one of the greatest groups with a who's who of the greatest all star musicians to ever do it! Jump on the train and you'll forever be a fan! 💯
Actually, even though I love Steely Dan. The true forefathers are the group Traffic. The album Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Is one of my favorite albums. The instrumentals and a young Steve Windoow. Classic.
Speaking about the musicianship of the band members, I listened to an interview with Steve Lukather and David Paich and they were asked about the band's rehearsal habits. They said they never really rehearsed. They would just go into the studio and play and that except for the horns, which were added later, that the recorded version of Rosanna was the second take of the song and the instrumental section after the lyrics end was just them jamming spontaneously at the end of the song.
As many have mentioned, some of the best musicians in the biz. Drummer Jeff Porcaro (RIP) was known the 'man with the golden groove'. All of my drummer buddies loved him and as a guitar player Toto's Steve Lukather has always been one of my favorites. I attended a music college in Boston in the 90's, full of mostly snobby jazz players. When TOTO came to town they all went to see them. Rock wasn't normally their thing but ....respect! I've seen them several times since then, always a great show.
thank you very much guys for react on Toto this is just one of the gifted groups from late 70S and grew up stronger and became a legendary group with their iconic songs I'm strongly suggest 99 it's also a mega hit
One of my favorites from Toto is Pamela. Georgie Porgy is another one, but there isn't a bad Toto song in my opinion. I have seen them live a few times in the last 15 years or so and it is always so fun.
The members of Toto were some of the best studio musicians at the time. They decided to form their own band. Btw, the horn players are the guys from Chicago.
I love your reactions, guys!! Does a heart good to see how much your enjoying these classic groups from our era. I promise you: Toto’s ‘I Won’t Hold You Back’ is incredible, and it’ll always stick with you. 💜
Their instrumental score for the end title credits , for 1984 "Dune" film is awesome! They did most the film's score throughout the film too. Yes they're very talented musicians.
Just caught Toto in concert earlier this week (they're touring with Journey). this was one of their classic songs I was looking forward to hearing live ...and they didn't disappoint. Great, Classic very talented group
Oh man, you just did one of my favorite songs in Toto's "Rosanna". Used to dance to the old 45 record with this song all the time when I was a kid. However ... I do agree with what others have said below. Two songs that are really good (and, fair warning, also really sad) that I also like from Toto are: "I Won't Hold You Back Now" And "I'll Be Over You". "I'll Be Over You" is a real heartbreaker for me. I always think of one particular woman from long ago in my life when I hear this song. It is just ... and I should stop talking now. Just give those two songs a listen. They have a different tempo/pace than "Africa" or "Rosanna" and it does make their sound even more eclectic.
LOVE how you guys made the comparison/similarity between Toto & Chicago in terms of transitions and theatrical eclectic music. It warms my heart that you guys are appreciating the music from my generation. We really did have so much great music. Thank you for sharing this music with your wonderful observations. ❤❤
The members were pretty much all studio musicians, who have to be good to be able to walk into a studio and play what's required. They got together and formed this band.
Hearing this takes me back the hopeful young nights of early teens. Cruisin'...in a small town's main street or around a huge mall in the big city...this song playin' on warm summer nights.
As I listen to this, what I can say is that the 80's threw everything and the kitchen at you with the musical styles. It gave you horns, rock guitar, piano, orchestra, harmonies etc. There was nothing untouched by the bands of the 80's
They have a hell of lot more ballads, but yeah... those are my favorites too, and adding to those "I Will Remember" from the Tambu album too, which it always make tear up because Luke wrote it for Jeff. Also David Paich is one of my role models on the piano/keys...
Love Toto makes me smile whenever I hear them. Amber you need to listen to Billy Vera live singing “At This Moment”. Talk about horns. Sax is crazy!,,,
I read somewhere that someone is quoted as saying, “Billy helped a lot of out-of-work horn players find jobs again thanks to his big hit!” I wish I could remember the exact quote! I think the quote was in the linear notes of the CD, but not sure.
My mother in law's name was Rosana. She's no longer with us so we played this on Saturday at our wedding reception as a tribute to her. Toto is so dope. Why are they not in the RNF HOF?
The Rosanna drum groove and fills are done with so much feel and so deep in the pocket that while many attempt to play these drum parts, few master them.
Oh, I forgot to mention, the female dancer is Cynthia Rhodes, Richard Marx's ex-wife, who played Penny in "Dirty Dancing", and was the lead singer of the second incarnation of the band Animotion. And the background dancer who looks like Patrick Swayze? Yeah, that's really him.
Each Toto component was a major player in the 80s music industry. Almost all top 10 songs of the decade and even the 90s decade have been played, produced and recorded by some and mostly all Toto members
Great reaction as always! If you wanna dig a little deeper on Toto and this song in particular check out Rick Beato's UA-cam channel. He has a feature called "What Makes This Song Great" that breaks down the brilliance of this song. I'm a novice when it comes to music, instruments, etc and found it fascinating.
Great review as always. Toto a band of highly trained studio musicians who backed up more people than I know but the comments list several. Toto could get what ever instrument or player they needed they were that plugged in to the recording scene. Who ever produced their recordings had a serious client to please who could not be danced around. These guys knew way too much to fool with.
I’ll Be Over You, 99, Saint George & the Dragon, I’ll Supply The Love, I Won’t Hold You Back, Stop Loving You…gosh, there’s wayyyy too many hits of theirs to write down lmao this band is made of the musician’s musicians. I’m so glad y’all got to Rosanna. It’s such a good song ! Some upbeat rock with a jazzy vibe thrown in right before the big chorus. Definitely a favorite of mine. Y’all seriously make the days go by a lot easier 😄 Fun fact: the little bluesy jam at the end was all entirely improvised on the spot during recording. If I remember correctly, instead of ending with the chorus, they let the tape run and the band went for it.
ALL TOTO:s songs are like that. For us who grown up with TOTO it was just WOW. When TOTO realy hit their prime 1980 and 1990 it was like a decade long new year. How ever even if TOTO was so good and diverse they werent as known as other big rock groups like Eagles, Heart, Bon Jovi, mötley crue, Journey, AC/DC and KISS at that same time. However they acctully got more famous and known over time and long after their prime. And still their music survive to this day. Their music is so rich and diffrent. Their special sound is always there even though they they mix so much diffrent styles in to their music like Gorgy porgy. So so skilled mucisians and their performance live is just on the absolut LEGENDARY level!!! Many bands can be good on record but then you watch them live and they suck big time but not TOTO. They are perfectionists just like STING. His understanding and musical skill level is just light years away from the rest. Same with ToTo.
Toto is a great band. "Till The End " another great song which has Paula Abdul in her first Choreographic work on video, A must check out if I may say so and one of my fav Toto songs. Great reaction and glad your into them. As always stay safe and much Love
Toto stepped it up a notch with their 4th album, Toto IV. I could listen to it over and over again every day back in the mid-80s. There's that Rock of the 80s again!
One of the most underrated bands, Period!! The fact Toto is not in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame leaves me dumbfounded. Some of these musicians have collaborated with Michael Jackson and so many more. I’ll Be Over You and Till the End are 2 of my favorite Toto songs. Also Paula Abdul, before she became famous, was in the music video for Till the End.
To say that the R&R HOF is a political entity is an understatement. For Toto not being in there is the BIGGEST slap in the face for musicians everywhere. After all, how many artist are in the Hall due to the session musicianship contributions of the Toto members. THIS IS BULL!
Toto's hit got it's name from actress Rosanna Arquette, who was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro at the time. "Rosanna" was written by band leader David Paich, who was always looking for good ideas for lyrics
Their best song in my opinion is "I'll Be Over You" (Michael McDonald sings in it too)! Watch the original video.... brings back soooooo many good memories! Was back in NORMAL / HAPPY American life! I hope you guys react to that one. Also a song that one reminds me of every time I hear it is by another great band, STYX (called) "Show Me The Way"! I bet you'd love that one too! I have sooooo many of these (and that not too many are reacting to so you would be one of the firsts to do them), like; Michael McDonald: "Take It To Heart" Bad Company: "If You Needed Somebody" GTR: "When The Heart Rules The Mind" Paul Carrack: "Don't Shed A Tear" Jackson Browne: "In The Shape Of A Heart" Restless Heart: "I'll Still Be Loving You" Boy Meets Girl: "Waiting For A Star To Fall" (watch the original video but there's AN EXCELLENT 80'S MONTAGE VIDEO TO THIS SONG & IS ONE OF THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN.... you want to get a taste of what the 80's was like WATCH THAT VIDEO) Its called: "Waiting For A Star To Fall: A Tribute to 80's Entertainment"..... I have soooooo many more too! I'm truly surprised there aren't more reaction videos to these songs..... they're some of the best ever made! If you don't mind, I'm going to "copy/paste" this comment until I know you've seen it or I see you starting to react to these! I REALLY WANT PEOPLE TO SPREAD THE BEST AMERICA HAD TO OFFER..... AND THAT WAS THE 80'S HANDS DOWN (my opinion of course)! I just think the more people get introduced to more happier/normal days in America and the content those times created..... just maybe we can start to move back in that direction!:)
You did "Hold The Line" and said the you liked it, and that song came from their debut album which was filled with brilliant music. My suggestion would be to do a video where you do the first 2 songs together, the first is "Child's Anthem" which is a short instrumental piece of only 2:45, and the second is " I'll Supply The Love" which an awesome song with lyrics and vocals that comes in at 3:44. That would bring the whole thing to 7:24.

While the Rosanna Halftime shuffle is great, it's actually not that hard to play once you get the muscle memory of the rhythm. If I can play it after two months of practice, then most people can probably do it if they put their heads to it in far less time.
Senior year of high school...this song played everywhere!! Great song!
I was a fan of Toto growing up and I finally saw them in concert last month…totally blew us away, they were such an amazing band live!
Saw these guys live in 1989. They had all their instruments turned toward the audience so we could see everything they were playing. Absolutely all the keyboard parts were played live, no sequencers, even on tunes like 'Africa'. To this day, it remains the most amazing performance I've seen.
You can never go wrong with TOTO, they are truly an elite band!!! Well done with this reaction RSR...Well done indeed!!! "FIRE" to the bone!!!
This song takes me right back to my teenage years. 1982 83. I absolutely live this song and a bug fan Toto
the musicians in this band played on pretty much every song and album in the mid 70s til the end of the 80s. that guitar player is all over thriller, the keyboard player wrote human nature, the drummer is probably on over 1000 records
The feel. Toto is all about feel. Funk, rock, R&B or jazz, you get it all.
This is one of the greatest pop songs ever composed. It's a perfect pop symphony.
TOTO is just an amazing group of real musicians.
Toto has more extraordinary musicians than any other band that I can think of. They can literally play any genre well and sound so damn good doing it!
Precision playing from a group of very gifted studio musicians....it doesn't get much better in this genre.
The thing for me that always set this song apart as a classic is the very subtle, almost unnoticeable slap-bass in the chorus. Every single change and flair in the song is phenomenal but that slap-bass is almost hidden in the background but does so much to accent the chorus into the classic sound that Rosanna has.
Toto IS so fire! Such a complete sound and the production. They were a super-group and they always captured the best grooves and arrangements.
FYI The dancer in red is Cynthia Rhodes. She was also Penny in Dirty Dancing and Tina in Flashdance, and is FANTASTIC! Thanks for another great reaction! Cheers!
And is Married to or Was, to RICHARD MARX!
@@chazrjr And for a short time was the female vocalist of Animotion after Astrid Plane left. She is fabulous!
And the guy in Red is Patrck Swayze. Jonny from Dirty Dancing.
@@PrinceJediMaster Wow! Never noticed that. Thanks! (Too busy watching Cynthia, I guess. LOL)
@@charlesharris9692 can definitely understand that...lol.
Toto is peak musicianship, everyone of them are true masters of their craft. plus the arrangement is top draw!
They are known for their high production values. You need to hear "99". That was my first exposure to them in the 70's.
"I'll Be Over You"...its a ballad and beautiful.
That's one thing that we had in our music back in the day is that you didn't know what you were going to get, it made you listen to the hole song. Great music.
It stuns me to see young people finally hear great music.
They haven't done Steely Dan yet? Unfathomable! They're missing out!
Wow, ya! They need to play some Steely Dan. Good call.
Actually, even though I love Steely Dan. The true forefathers are the group Traffic. The album Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Is one of my favorite albums. The instrumentals and a young Steve Windoow. Classic.
"Any World (That I'm Welcome To)" is my favorite. And "My Old School" is fantastic and very accessible to someone new to Steely Dan.
Yes Steely Dan! The Royal Scam album is a real gem!
This song & arrangement shows just how dope & ahead of their time ToTo was/is!🔥🔥🔥👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Y'all went down the rabbit hole... Rock on! God bless always n in ALL WAYS
Best guitar outro ever. I saw them live in 1984 as my first rock concert ever.
It is such an amazing guitar outro I get goosebumps everytime I hear it.
Berklee College of Music?
@@samuraienterprises9802 Yes
@@GuitarTerraYT Cool school!
Berkley??
@@woodysdrums8083 Yes Berklee. Berkley with a 'Y' is in California
I think the directional changes in the structure is what a lot of older people miss. When the song is over you feel like you went somewhere.
Perfectly said. This as normal I miss music of my youth
This was always my fav Toto song....the beat is so awesome.
You get the impression that they were so enjoying doing this song, they didn't want to stop! and the virtuosity in the jam.WOW!
thank you very much guys for react on Toto this is just one of the gifted groups from late 70S and grew up stronger and became a legendary group with their iconic songs I'm strongly suggest 99 it's also a mega hit
One of my favorites from Toto is Pamela. Georgie Porgy is another one, but there isn't a bad Toto song in my opinion. I have seen them live a few times in the last 15 years or so and it is always so fun.
Georgie Porgy is a must for sure
Pamela is one of my favorites, along with 99.
The members of Toto were some of the best studio musicians at the time. They decided to form their own band. Btw, the horn players are the guys from Chicago.
Best group of musicians ever. These guys were all studio cats. They can play literally anything
I never get tired of listening to this song. It is just incredibly great.
I love your reactions, guys!! Does a heart good to see how much your enjoying these classic groups from our era. I promise you: Toto’s ‘I Won’t Hold You Back’ is incredible, and it’ll always stick with you. 💜
“I’ll be over you” HAS to be next!
Their instrumental score for the end title credits , for 1984 "Dune" film is awesome! They did most the film's score throughout the film too. Yes they're very talented musicians.
Toto are studio musicians who formed a band. So the best of the best! Best skill level ever
Two songs that are really good (and, fair warning, also really sad) that I also like from Toto are:
"I Won't Hold You Back Now"
And
"I'll Be Over You".
The 2 Ballads that Toto did were amazing!! “ I’ll Be Over You” and “ I Won’t Hold You Back”
So good!
Definitely I'll Be Over You...one of my all time favourite songs
@@virginiastephens7831 Mine too.
They have a hell of lot more ballads, but yeah... those are my favorites too, and adding to those "I Will Remember" from the Tambu album too, which it always make tear up because Luke wrote it for Jeff. Also David Paich is one of my role models on the piano/keys...
My favorite is "I will remember you" from the Tambu album.
Billy Vera, thank you.
My mother in law's name was Rosana. She's no longer with us so we played this on Saturday at our wedding reception as a tribute to her. Toto is so dope. Why are they not in the RNF HOF?
Toto rocks. Such a passionate song!
Glad you all reacted to this!! I worked in the concert business for 23 years, and just wanted to say you all do great reactions!!!!
This drum riff is arguably one of the best of all time. Any accomplished drummer has the Rosanna shuffle in his arsenal.
And used lots of profanity and developed a shit ton of gray hair leaning it too lol
She was also in the movie Flash dance in 1983 and Staying Alive with John Travolta I think about 1986?
Speaking of Richard Marx... WAY past time to listen to his pitch perfect vocals!!!!

The best studio musicians of their era came together to form Toto. These are the guys who played behind Michael Jackson on "Thriller".
Each Toto component was a major player in the 80s music industry. Almost all top 10 songs of the decade and even the 90s decade have been played, produced and recorded by some and mostly all Toto members
The lilting quality of the lead vocal. And his vibrato control is perfect. But the emotional conveyance!!! Oh my😊
Great reaction as always!
Y’all seriously make the days go by a lot easier 😄
Fun fact: the little bluesy jam at the end was all entirely improvised on the spot during recording.
Toto was my favorite group when I was in High School. This was my favorite song and still is 40 years later!
Toto is a great band. "Till The End " another great song which has Paula Abdul in her first Choreographic work on video, A must check out if I may say so and one of my fav Toto songs. Great reaction and glad your into them. As always stay safe and much Love
Great reaction guys! Love your excitement to this great song and, you reached your goal by making me smile 😃
That outro solo by Steve Lukather is legendary. Fantastic guitar work!
Toto stepped it up a notch with their 4th album, Toto IV. I could listen to it over and over again every day back in the mid-80s. There's that Rock of the 80s again!
This is one of my favorites.
Also Paula Abdul, before she became famous, was in the music video for Till the End.
should be in for Africa alone.
They didn't suck up to the publisher of Rolling Stone Magazine. Therefore, he kept them out of the HOF.
RRHoF is a joke! Period the end.
To say that the R&R HOF is a political entity is an understatement. For Toto not being in there is the BIGGEST slap in the face for musicians everywhere. After all, how many artist are in the Hall due to the session musicianship contributions of the Toto members. THIS IS BULL!
That’s crazy that they aren’t in RnR Hall YET!!
Everything about this song is fire 🔥 but that bass line tho!!
Toto's hit got it's name from actress Rosanna Arquette, who was dating keyboardist Steve Porcaro at the time. "Rosanna" was written by band leader David Paich, who was always looking for good ideas for lyrics
Steve Porcaro, not David.
@@bazookajoe6133 thanks bazooka misspoke there
Toto got the best ensembles of great musicians.❤
Was written for Rosanna Arquette, an actress from the 70’s and 80’s. One of the band members dated her.
Their best song in my opinion is "I'll Be Over You" (Michael McDonald sings in it too)! Watch the original video.... brings back soooooo many good memories! Was back in NORMAL / HAPPY American life! I hope you guys react to that one. Also a song that one reminds me of every time I hear it is by another great band, STYX (called) "Show Me The Way"! I bet you'd love that one too! I have sooooo many of these (and that not too many are reacting to so you would be one of the firsts to do them), like;
Michael McDonald: "Take It To Heart"
Bad Company: "If You Needed Somebody"
GTR: "When The Heart Rules The Mind"
Paul Carrack: "Don't Shed A Tear"
Jackson Browne: "In The Shape Of A Heart"
Restless Heart: "I'll Still Be Loving You"
Boy Meets Girl: "Waiting For A Star To Fall" (watch the original video but there's AN EXCELLENT 80'S MONTAGE VIDEO TO THIS SONG & IS ONE OF THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN.... you want to get a taste of what the 80's was like WATCH THAT VIDEO) Its called: "Waiting For A Star To Fall: A Tribute to 80's Entertainment".....
Child’s Anthem is KILLER. What a way to start off their first album.
@@heidichristensen7919 A few years back I was playing drums in a band that covered that song as a show opener. It gave us a opportunity while nobody had to concentrate on vocals to dial in the mix.
Perfect suggestion! This is absolutely a must!
Oh yes. Hold the line
I would STRONGLY reccomond!!!!! I’ll supply the love is the sickest and I WOULD strongly reccomoned holyanna :)
In case it hasn't been mentioned, the pretty blonde dancer was the lead female dance instructor in Dirty Dancing.
That is Cynthia Rhodes, who was in Dirty Dancing and other films. She was married to Richard Marx for many years.
What can i say: Iam so glad to raise up at this time with this wonderful bands. The 80s i will never forget :) Greetings from Germany
Toto musicians were one of the best in the 70/80, but very underrated. Drummer Jeff Porcaro was one of the best drummer of that aera. He was a session musician and played with many many big names.
