Its one of THE hardest drum grooves to play correctly! Drummers like me LITERALLY judge eachothers skill levels on "Yeah... but can you play 'Roseanna' correctly?!?!" 💯😎

    • @anony_meows
      @anony_meows Рік тому +9

jeff porcaro was one in a billion kind of drummer. the rosanna beat is easy, but giving it life like how jeff played it? hardest thing to do, and that's the mystery. because this is the one song can easily felt really off without jeff's feel, even if the drummer played all the correct notes.

@@kierstenridgway4634 The members were almost the equivalent to 60's studio group The Wrecking Crew who played on countless hits of that era. However Wrecking Crew was a studio ensemble, while Toto was a group of studio musicians who decided to form a decent band. However they did continue parallel studio career as well. One early example of Jeff Porcaro on drums would be Leo Sayer song "When I Need You". Lee Ritenour's piece "Mr. Briefcase" has Jeff Porcaro and David Hungate on it. Steve Lukather plays the main guitar riff for Michael Jackson's "Beat It", and also plays bass on that song, with most of the Toto also on it.

They recorded with some of the biggest artist in the 70's, Steely Dan, Seals n Crofts and Sonny n Cher. Steve is the one who actually wrote "Human Nature". David Paich, the vocalist and writer of "Africa", also appears on "Thriller". Toto is on every single cut on Thriller. All members are world class musicians, but drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarist Steve "Luke" Lukather, are considered among the greatest on their instrumetn in rock history.

gotta remember that these guys were studio musicians in high demand and they just decided to put their own music out. Great lead singer and Steve Lukather on guitar he just wails at the end. The Drummer, the late, great Jeff Porcaro with that shuffle beat that became so identifiable from this song. This album had many hits. I would recommend hearing Hold the Line for a completely different beat and some epic guitar work.

Steve Lukather, the lead guitarrist and second vocalist of Toto has played guitar as a session musician for some of the biggest hits of the past. A few artists he played with Michael Jackson (Beat it, Billie Jean etc.), Lionel Ritchie (Running With the Night), Donna Summer (She Works Hard for the Money), Chicago (Hard Habit to Break), Richard Marx(Repeat Offender), George Benson (Give Me the Night), Elton John (I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That), Paul McCartney (No More Lonely Nights) and many many more. Not only did he play on these, but he also produced music and wrote for a lot of these and other artists. Chances are, if it was a hit in the 80s, Steve was playing on it.

This video inspired Michael Jackson to make his Beat It video in the same "West Side Story" style. (Side Note. Guitarist Steve Lukather and drummer Jeff Porcaro of Toto play on Beat It and a few other tracks from Thriller. Keyboardist David Paich and Steve Porcaro are also on the Thriller album.)
Cynthia Rhodes, who plays Rosanna in the video was in the movie Dirty Dancing and is joined by actor Patrick Swayze who is seen as one of the male background dancers in the red jacket.
The song is about actress Rosanna Arquette who was dating Steve Porcaro at the time.
The song peaked at #2 for five weeks in 1982.
The song was from the album Toto IV, which went Triple Platinum-certified.
As individuals, the band members’ performances can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a HALF A BILLION albums.
And yet, they are not in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.

He didn’t like it because it changed up too much, had too many different parts, wow that says a lot about current music I guess

Yes it does...most current musicians fall into cognitive decline if anything is beyond 8 notes and 3 nursery ryhmes.

I was thinking the same thing. He’s used to Hip Hop. Same stuff over & over again.

The young guy definitely has ruined ears. Way too much hip-hop/rap yakkity-yak in his ears, and not enough exposure to actual musicians playing actual instruments using actual skills that took actual time and study to master, and actual song composition and arranging.
Music history, Guy. It didn’t start with the lazy part you’re used to.

It was too much real music for him. 🤷‍♂️

The dancer is Cynthia Rhodes from Dirty Dancing, Flash Dance and Stayin Alive, Patrick Swayze is also in this video. This band is so damn talented.

It's actually about the beautiful actress Rosanna Arquette, who had a brief relationship with a band member right before this came out.. This is ridiculously well produced, and played.

Interesting that you would mention "Beat It" Sharks. Two of the members of Toto in this video played on MJ Beat it.

A little more than a year ago, I put together the pieces of an incredibly intricate web surrounding this song...
    The dancer is Cynthia Rhodes.
She played Penny in 'Dirty Dancing'.
The song is about actress Rosanna Arquette who not only WAS a dancer, but appears in Pulp Fiction as drug dealer Lance's pierced girlfriend.
When u connect Penny's post abortion condition to Uma Thurman's Overdose condition on Lance's floor, then link the Pulp soundtrack cut 'Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon' to Dirty Dancing character 'Baby' who basically grew up in that film witnessing those crazy events, the Pulp Fiction dance between Travolta and Thurman matches Baby and Johnny's 'Time of My Life' finale.
    It's all connected.

Brilliant drummer Jeff Porcaro opens with a shuffle cocktail. 2 parts Bernard Purdie, 1 part John Bonham with a twist of Bo Diddley.

Great reaction guys...well 2 out of 3 anyway. Fun fact #1: MJ liked this video enough to borrow the theme for Beat It. #2: Patrick Swayze was one of the dancers.

The guy doing all the "Riffin" is David Paich who wrote the entire song...with a West Side Story vibe...
