The Microcomposer is a sequencer, outputting CV (control voltage) signals. This is before MIDI, and exactly why MIDI was developed in the first place was to replace the very complicated CV control protocol.. which wasn't even standard but you had to make all kinds of ad hoc stuff to marry things together at times. You just hoped that the specific voltage range matched your synth, of course using Roland stuff with Roland Microcomposer was the surest bet.
So, the MC does not produce any sounds, it is the sequencer. The cost is understandable when you have to consider the complexity of storing, playing back and sending multiple channels of voltage control signals in 1977... I mean, i got some formal education on the topic, and have worked with analog synths since the 80s and i haven't got a clue where to even start, using '77 tech. Using 2023 tech a similar device would probably take few weeks to design and build, there is probably some Pi or Arduino code for it ready, if not.. ChatGPT... And the biggest cost would be a power supply and the connectors..

HI Beth! I have watched and enjoyed your channel for quite a while although I just recently re-discovered you just now as it seems my UA-cam algorithm somehow got changed and I lost track of you for maybe the past 8 months or so. I've always found the quality of your videos and expert commentary quite enjoyable however watching this reaction it appears that your analysis and production quality has skyrocketed to another level and certainly a step above any other channels doing "voice coach" reactions. Outstanding. I'm just curious when you started adding in these additional dimensions to your videos and if you do it all yourself or whether you have hired professional staff to assist you with it. I think the quality is getting closer to some mainstream televisioin programming which is commendable for sure.

Yeah, an awful loss..... a great great drummer. I remember hearing an interview with a guy from a scots band who Jeff sessioned for who thought he was being a smart-arse when Jeff asked him, what he wanted the track that Jeff was playing on to sound like and he gave a flippant answer of "well, I want to hear it like..... " and Jeff started playing and James was absolutely stumped...."er yeah, exactly like that, actually" LOLZ
The Porcaro shuffle was inspired/influenced by the Purdie shuffle, which was used by Bernard Purdie, one of the great session drummers used by Steely Dan.

Toto has always been one of those sacred bands to me, everyone involved is just world class in talent and musicianship with insane songwriting... As session musicians they were EVERYWHERE... most notably Thriller would be a completely different album without them. Lukather has an excellent ability to know when to shine and when to sit in the background and add so much flavour to a song without demanding the spotlight, they all just know exactly what the music needs.

Surprised that there was no mention of the song's inspiration: the actress Rosanna Arquette, who essentially the Pattie Boyd of the 1980's - breaking the hearts of musicians and inspiring amazing songs as a result. Almost ever song on this album was played on a Yamaha CS-80. It was a monster of a keyboard. It weighed about 220 lbs, and put out lot of heat. It was never designed to go on the road, but they took it anyway. It was used extensively on Africa. The CD-80 was a revolutionary design for its' time. If I remember correctly it could store four patches, and they all had to be programmed with sliders.

Three of the greatest high harmony singers in rock are Randy Meisner & Timothy B Schmidt of the Eagles, and the king of high harmony, in my humble opinion as a former musical theater and rock vocalist, Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash (and Young). Beth,
Thank you for reviewing this song based on my and probably many other’s recommendations. This was a great live version although you could go down the rabbit hole listening to many older live versions with both the Porcaro brothers. Even though I am a vocalist myself I appreciate the nod you gave to the percussion performance and especially Jeff Porcaro’s contribution to the funky feel of the song.

Beth, LOVE...your energy is contageous. Nice breakdown of the vocals. Your excitement is sooo cool. Beth, you're correct about this band, tremendous musicians. I miss Jeff Porcaro terribly, to this day...May he rest in peace! This version of Rosanna was the 35th anniversary show in Poland. TOTO IV, is not the extended version of Rosanna. The album won no less than 6 Grammy's. Listen to it all...truly wonderful. They still rock today. Just differently without JP.

I’m trying to remember what synths Toto was using back then. (Emu?) I don’t think, as an ex-Moog employee, this track featured a Minimoog.

Wikipedia says Minimoog, Yamaha CS-80, Prophets (Prophet 5 most likely) and (Yamaha) GS-1.

Wow, thank you for this content! I became a big fan of Toto by rediscovering these videos of their 35th anniversary. Here, unfortunately, there are not all the historical members of the band who have also recorded this beautiful track, and that you have rightly mentioned, but some of them have been replaced by Simon Philips on drums (direct replacement of Jeff Porcaro until 2014 from about '92) and Natan East, a great bassist and session man (who played with them only for this tour, if I’m not mistaken). Even today they manage to convey great emotions with their songs, what an incredible band!

I enjoyed hearing this on the radio back in the day, a studio recording of course. Interesting bits of history, diagrams on vocal production, info on the synthesizers. We could tell how much you liked the song - you hardly stopped moving! You should have been in that audience movin' and groovin'.
6 March 2024: I watched this a second time and got to thinking that what you really need is a little dance floor in your studio for songs like this. 😊
    All the best,

Thanks Beth for this video. Although Toto is my favourite band for decades now I did not know that Joseph Eilliams is John Williams‘ son. I also appreciate that you have extended your videos with graphics and also background information beyond vocal coaching topics.

From one Scot tae anither Toto were inspired to start the band as teens after being fans and seeing live in the US , Emerson Lake and Palmer. The keys played by Keith of course! Now I’ve said that you will hear keys in their music! And Roseanna was my Italian great grandmothers name! Plus you mentioned Greg Lake singing while chewing gum? He said after, in the heat of the lights and nerves his mouth would get dry and the gum kept it wet to allow him to sing!

Great educational and entertaining reaction to a classic song. I have to admit, I have never heard this version before now. And in its own way, as good as the original.

this rhythm is so highly regarded by drummers it actually has a name. It is called the "Rosanna Shuffle". Drum teachers actually use it to teach shuffle rhythm to advanced students. I have actually seen drummers compare their Rosanna Shuffles in kind of a competition lol. Also fun fact Barbara Gruska, one of the backup singers for the Foo Fighters is John Williams granddaughter , Josephn Williams niece

Thanks Beth. Now I’m hooked on this song and on this video. And recorded live in Poland. The unity, love, and spirit are electric. The politicians and the corporations need to get out of the way. With music like this, we’ll take it from here.

Great reaction! I was able to see them on this tour when they were in Las Vegas. It was a wonderful experience. Joseph does not have quite the high range that Bobby did and a lot of the high harmonies are done by female backup singers on the stage.

Toto IV is just a great album, full stop. "I Won't Hold You Back" is a great ballad. Have to say I prefer the Lukather/Kimball original vocal. I was sorry to read that Bobby Kimball has been suffering dementia for several years now.

And jazzy key changes. Verse in the key of G major. Chorus in Gm. You don't get that everyday. And checkout the outro guitar solo on Lionel Richie's "Running with the Night" played by Steve Lukather. He was just warming up but the tape was running and they kept his first take. The solo is insane. Oh and he pays the main groove on MJ's "Beat it".
