Have you heard anything by @DanVasc ? I just listened to his cover of "Angels We Have Heard On High", sung in Italian, German, Portuguese and English. He's very good.
You realize most of these guys were in Michael Jacksons studio sessions right. Steve Lukather the guitar player joined Eddie Van Halen to write the guitar arrangements for Beat It!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️
If i would count how many times I've listened to this song it would probably be a couple 1000 times, was in my teens when this came out, love this song and Toto have tons of great songs.
Toto was a sort of supergroup formed by some of the best studio musicians in LA at the time. All the original members have so many credits (and lots of non-credits) on so many albums, it is insane. Jeff Porcaro was such an excellent drummer, he'd come in, nail a song in a take or two and be done. Even the members of Toto were like 'he's on another level, we'd be messing around with guitar takes and he'd be waiting on us like "hurry up guys" '. I saw someone breakdown all the parts of "Roseanna" on YT and it was a phenomenal piece of recording.
The gentleman on the keyboard use to hit higher notes in this song, but with age, he’s singing at a lower octave, which happens to some of us singers as we get older. Bobby can still hit his high notes, though, and that makes me happy!
"The whole thing was the fun part." Hahahaha! I like that you saw the live version and liked it. I saw Toto numerous times live in different configurations and they were always great. Some of the most musical talent you can find in a band. Mike, the bassist, unfortunately died of ALS a few years ago. Lukather, the guitarist, was one of my main guitar influences. And he has a really good voice as well. You can hear him as lead singer on "Tambu" or "Kingdom of Desire" - two really great albums.
Two great covers of this song I would highly recommend: Leo Moracchioli of Frog Leap Studios has a great metal version. Also, another UA-cam channel/creator Mike Massé, who's a full-time musician now, but was getting his start back in 2010 singing covers live in a Salt Lake City pizzeria. His 16-million view live performance video of Africa is legendary among his fans. Mike was a public defender at the time, and would sing and play his acoustic guitar, usually accompanied by his friend Jeff Hall, whose day job was prosecutor, who sang backing vocals and played bass guitar. After work, these two would literally leave the courthouse, slip into some dad-casual clothes, slide on down to The Pie, set up in their reserved booth, and perform seated all night for the pizza-eating public. It's really an epic cover of Africa, not to be missed! And I think you'll be pleasantly-surprised at the vocals -- Mike's a natural tenor, plus it's a superb arrangement, winning praise from Toto themselves. Hope you get to enjoy this dynamic duo, Maggie!
Steve Lukather "Luke" is one of the best guitarists in the world and to prove a point I think he wrote this song and he also wrote Thriller for Michael Jackson and does most of the guitar work on that song baring that little fill from Eddie Van Halen who was the new kid on the block at the time. Steve formed Toto when he was 19 after two or three years as a gun slinger session guitarist.
Dear Maggie, Please keep reacting. You always brighten my day when you release a new one. I wish you the best in your career and can't wait to see you perform live ;)
There is a live version of Africa recorded either in Poland or Amsterdam where they kind of do a tribute to Jeff Porcaro (the original drummer that created the rhythm for the song). It's wonderful. As the song draws to a close, each band member gradually leaves one after one until only Simon Phillips (current, well, now former, drummer) is the only one playing for a few bars. Then the song fades. It's wonderful how they did that so subtly. You absolutely have to find the live version of Rosanna taken from "Falling IN Between Live". The intro is so amazing, then they break into the original arrangement. The harmonies are incredible.
That was Toto Live In Amsterdam 2003. One of their best performances. During that show they played a great version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and a special version of Hold The Line which is almost 10 minutes long.
There have been a couple of fun covers of this song as well. Weezer did one a few years ago and featured Weird Al Yankovic and his band on the video. Also, another artist who you’ve reacted to before: Leo Moracchioli of Frog Leap Studios did a fantastic cover of this song with a couple of friends of his, singer Hannah Boulton and guitarist Rabea Massaad.
There two untraditional covers of this song, both from AGT. One was the Ndlovu Youth Choir from South Africa. The other done by the People's Choir from LA. You might want to check them as they are fantastic.
One of the best piece of Toto.. Ok enough with this rock n' roll lol! Mind if you make a reaction of Linda Ronstadt & Aaron Neville "Don't know much".. you can thank me later!
The bassplayer is Mike Porcaro, a studio legend! Played on so many albums besides toto. He took over the spot from david hungate; another studio legend. Mikey died from ALS in 2015. He’s called the Groovemeister on bass by his collegeaus.
Every nerdy person from the 90s 00s who grew up playing GTA is getting nostalgia, the leads voice is so much deeper then it used to be, the joys of getting old and loosing the top end of your falsetto range. Still just as good as ever.
Have you listened to the band Journey much? The lead singer, Steve Perry, was nicknamed "The Voice." Don't Stop Believin' is probably their most famous song.
The lead singer Joseph Williams is actually the son of legendary composer John Williams. His voice and appearance has changed a lot since the 70s (understandably). I kind of wish you'd reacted to the original video.
You really need to hear this song performed by the Gaelic Choir. It's like, a 50-voice choir singing this song in Gaelic and it's genuinely brilliant. Also the original line up of Toto was made up of some of the most prolific L.A. Studio musicians of the 70's and 80's. Hence, their extremely tight sound and vocal harmonies.
You should check out Toto-Waiting for your love for a great vocal performance from the main singer (studio version). Another great vocal performance by another singer with them (their current singer aswell) is Toto-Till the end (studio version)
I was a wee boy when this appeared in our uk charts. don't know where it got, think it was in the early-mid 80s. lots of Big Hits at the time, but this one hit hard & fast & stuck with me all these long years. am not a Great Big Toto fan. know Africa & Rosanna well, couldn't name any others to save my life. but based solely on these two, especially this one, I have the Utmost Respect for Toto as musicians & songwriters. they are a Class Act.
I caused my friends to get hooked on this song, used to put it on every time we were smoking weed and despite everyone being more or less metalheads didn't take long before every time we were getting high someone would ask for "that one song" 😂
Thank Maggie From Siriah and Trubble!!! Your Cape Town Bras!! I smiled as you spoke.... Knowing as soon as heard it the Beginning it would bring you in. By the way the beginning is the sound of one of the African Favorites. The Klimba.. Blessing to you. Siriah.....
@Maggie Reneé Just wanted to say that I love the reactions. I would love to hear you listen to a band known as Zimmers Hole (When you we're shouting at the devil). They are a band that no one ever reacts to but deserve alot of credit and has some of the greatest musicians of metal. Another amazing band is Alcatrazz or Rainbow (Lost in Hollywood).
The virtuosity of these studio musicians is incredible. If you like, you might check out “Hold the Line”. Great track, crowd pleaser, incredible vocals and a great guitar solo :).

Toto used to be the backup band for an artist named Boz Skaggs who was popular back in the late 60's early 70's. You should check out their entire first album titled just Toto. I really love the song "Goodbye Girl". I'm sure you will agree that the production on their first album was epic and way ahead of it's time!!! Also I have another artist for you to check out. Her name is Teena Marie the song is called "Out on a Limb" she is different, but very talented. By the way I'm a vocalist and I too studied opera. Not to the extent that you have, but for the benefit of pitch and breath control for my vocals. I love your videos, so entertaining. Keep it up!
Toto was a band formed from stuido muscians and they did quite well. BTW, I suggest that you do most of your reviews first on the studio version. The fidelity is usually much better. There are some songs where the 'live' version is better, but that is my preference.
Oh HEY! The Shiny Shirt Brigade! I had one of them - several in fact - back in the day... Yeah - brilliant song - great meld of musicians - fantastic arrangement and so many parts of this are individual 'ear worms'. This song is timeless - played everywhere. Still is. Great reaction. :)

Have you ever reacted to Chris Stapleton " COLD" ????
I would like to see you react to the band Renaissance. The singer Annie Haslam an opera singer with an incredible voice.
Have you heard anything by @DanVasc ? I just listened to his cover of "Angels We Have Heard On High", sung in Italian, German, Portuguese and English. He's very good.

EVH did the solo. All arrangements where made by Lukather
If you like this version, you should really listen to the original studio version, trust me.
Agreed, the original is much better.
Live at the zenith 1990, the best version imo.
If i would count how many times I've listened to this song it would probably be a couple 1000 times, was in my teens when this came out, love this song and Toto have tons of great songs.
This was Toto's concert in Amsterdam and I was there!

And you can see me a couple of times with a yellow Toto shirt. Front row jumping and screeming my lungs out ..

Really great live version! It's often tough to do a "classic" song live, but they took it to a new level.
David Paich and Tony Spinner sound awesome singing those background vocals. And of course Paich stole tbe show with those high belts...👍🏼😎
Check out Toto's 'Hold the Line', live in Cleveland in 1979...
Yes!!!!
Bobby is the original frontman for Toto since 77.
Toto was at it's peak something else as a some group of talented musicians, but Bobby Kimbals high pitched voice was truly gold.
The gentleman on the keyboard use to hit higher notes in this song, but with age, he’s singing at a lower octave, which happens to some of us singers as we get older. Bobby can still hit his high notes, though, and that makes me happy!
I was 17 years old and I loved Toto... Still have their vinyl records ! Outch ! 🥰 Goosebumps ! Thank you !

I loved this song when I was 16 or 17 years old
"The whole thing was the fun part." Hahahaha! I like that you saw the live version and liked it. I saw Toto numerous times live in different configurations and they were always great. One of the quintessential 80s songs. Just a timeless classic. Loved it! Live is (almost) always better.
Two great covers of this song I would highly recommend: Leo Moracchioli of Frog Leap Studios has a great metal version. Africa is one of my #1 favourite songs PERIOD. It's so calming, so relaxing, and is one of the few songs I sing well... Long Live Toto!
Steve Lukather "Luke" is one of the best guitarists in the world and to prove a point I think he wrote this song and he also wrote Thriller for Michael Jackson and does most of the guitar work on that song baring that little fill from Eddie Van Halen who was the new kid on the block at the time. Really like this song. Very nice reaction and fun interaction with everyone on the chat. Nice editing too 🎵
One of my fav groups! I was a teen into young adult in the 70s
Toto is fantastic, another deep rabbit hole full of bangers!
This song is playing in the Namib desert in Namibia on loop through a solar powered stereo
Rosanna and Hold the Line are my favorites! Love Toto!
A MUST!
Thank You Maggie for reacting to this. Brought back so many memories. One of my favorite bands back in the day (I'm 63). I had their LPs.
My pleasure. 😊💖
Great job Maggie! Classic song that is so popular even today.

Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams did a home isolation version
Check out Mike Masse. A duet from a pizza place, it’s amazing!
@@deathwatch1980 - Since Leo did the cover I can't listen to the original without "hearing" Hannah's "Oh yeah!" at the end of the chorus. :D
Jeff Picaro's Half-time shuffle is tough drumbeat. It's called the Purdy shuffle; drummers should know it. Bonham used it a lot.
Toto made a special of that song Africa for the 35 th anniversary of the song . Absolutely marvelous .

Toto are the standout tightly produced 80's band. Everything they do is neat, neat, neat no matter how complex.

Toto is one of my favorite bands. The original video for this song is worth watching.
Im a huge new wave music fan and Toto rings a loud bell to me...this was during the early 80s

Maggie , Your reactions to music videos is Awesome . I always enjoy Your podcasts . May You experience nothing but joy and happiness.
I love these reactions ofthe older music. Sometimes I forget how young you are.

Have you listened to the band Journey much? The lead singer, Steve Perry, was nicknamed "The Voice." Don't Stop Believin' is probably their most famous song.
Oh, eh, you reacted to the Lovesick Werewolf' song, nice!
(This one, Africa by Toto)
Just saw them open for Journey in February and they were fantastic!
The lead singer Joseph Williams is actually the son of legendary composer John Williams. His voice and appearance has changed a lot since the 70s (understandably). I kind of wish you'd reacted to the original video.

Toto's Africa and Rosanna were in the charts.

Someone hooked up some speakers to solar panels in Africa and this song plays on a loop 24/7 365 days a year out in the African wild😂🤣
Weezer did a cover not long ago that was EVERYWHERE! They literally did a note for note cover, and the video featured Weird Al.

Since you started reading the lyrics to "Africa" by Toto, I would like to present an excerpt by the late, great Johnny Clegg (1982):
Copper sun sinking low
Scatterlings and fugitives
Hooded eyes and weary brows
Seek refuge in the night
They are the scatterlings of Africa
Each uprooted one
On the road to Phelamanga
Where the world began
I love the scatterlings of Africa
Each and every one
In their hearts a burning hunger
Beneath the copper sun
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
Ancient bones of Olduvai
Echos of the very first cry
"Who made me here, and why
Beneath the copper sun?"
My very first beginnings
Beneath the copper sky
Lie deeply buried
In the dust of Olduvai
And we are scatterlings of Africa
Both you and I
We are on the road to Phelamanga
Beneath a copper sky
And we are Scatterlings of Africa
On a journey to the stars
Far below we leave forever
Dreams of what we were

Toto was a band formed from stuido muscians and they did quite well. BTW, I suggest that you do most of your reviews first on the studio version. The fidelity is usually much better. There are some songs where the 'live' version is better, but that is my preference.
This is good video, but the live version from their 40 Trips Around the Sun tour with Joseph Williams singing is a much better one.
Makes me feel really old when I hear people say they don’t really know this song.
The song was sampled for the Aquaman movie
The studio version is so much better
The guitar solo improv is straight out of the Led Zeppelin handbook.
