I mean, being a parallel to the UC, I think we're supposed to take it as Zaku was the next step in their development. Only unlike the UC, this is a few generations in and supposedly more capable..... When even the Ginn and gang were inspired by them, they would be A step in there somewhere. I guess a gentle nod would have been better though.
I think that Rau's CGUE was modified to be able to use the beam rifle of the GuAIZ since he was an ace and very chummy with Zala. It's easy to extrapolate that he'd get preferential tratment (as seen with the Providence) to make customisations to his unit in case he ended up faceing a gundam (that is immune to shell ammo but vounrable to beam wepons)
Seems likely. Then is suddenly given the Providence. They need a deleted scene where he's told about his new unit and walks into the pilots break room, "Hey Mike! Want something cool for the next fight? I'm not using it."
My favorite thing about these development histories is just how much lore they have to make up to fill in the gaps left by production making choices because they look cool.
Funny thing is I remember the CGUE and its Deep Arms upgrade from SD Gundam Online when it was still up. The OG CGUE, even if it had a reasonable melee option, was better off with its always-critical-hitting machineguns (and BOTH of them too) , and the Deep Arms was a mid-long range energy platform with a melee that hits as hard as a close range suit's.
The CGUE DEEP Arms was actually my first gunpla. I hadn't watched SEED at the time and I definitely didn't know what MSV meant, but I was in Japan at the time and really wanted a mecha model kit after seeing them on store shelves. The DEEP Arm's blue colouring and those neat beam cannons mounted on the shoulders really made it stand out for what was an already pretty cool design. I guess I just like Zeon-style blue MS -- the Gouf, Kampfer, Zudah, Z'Gok.
The 28mm cannons are just 2mm short of the 30mm used in the Avenger cannon on the A-10. They're the same caliber was the piano 1.1in guns used on early WW2 US carriers.
I loved using Assault CGUE in SD Gundam G Generation Crossrays because of its weapons and even throwing in a Bazooka for extra measure (the original CGUE has a range issue since it's all dekka)

Yeah cgue needs a revive or a rerelease but so does the quaiz and the dinn needs a proper hg even a 2014 astray gundams upgrade level with the pin and poly cap joints I mean the justice the cgue and dinn all use the same legs it wouldn't be hard to make a mold for them and cgue uses freedom arms under the shoulder joint section so again not hard to make a mold just place a block of aluminum into a 3d mill and layout the parts add sprues and call it a day for those parts

The Communist Party of China removed ranking system in PLA in 1965 because they considered that ranking system was meaningless due to enlisted soldiers and officers were equal, and they refused to copy the Soviet's system because of Sino-Soviet Split. Therefore, there was only soldiers, commisars and unit commanders during that time. After Cultural Revolution, Deng Xiaoping found that the chain of command was a mess due to without ranks during Sino-Vietnamese Conflict. So he decided to restore the ranking system in PLA.
CGUE, DINN and GUAIZ Rau ver. are the embodiments of the ace pilot. I always thought these units is a real threat for gundam pilot... after tired of all gundam type, I become more like mass trooper unit and ace unit not that not use gundam (the beginning from Gundam Unicorn series and now from SEED series).
SEED was the first time in ages where I was really taken by some of the grunt suits. OMG, the CGUE Assault is simply godly! Will probably be 20 years before they even toy around with giving it a model kit 🥲

Just a slight slim down & replace the Head or face w/ a cooler and/or Heroic looking one & its basically a PoV Named Character MS. That's how good & stylish its design is.
Classiest MS of the CE ? I love the design but the only model kit we have is more than dated (HG Seed kits really didn't age well. And were already disappointing at the time without modification or paint).
i despise seed destiny mainly because they replaced these beautiful suit with abomination that is zaku warrior and gouf ignite , those are just lazy design and doesn't really fit c.e. aesthetic.
I think Rau's CGUE was given a new battery to use beam weapons, but ZAFT didn't do this with all CGUEs because they didn't have time to upgrade all of them or even half of them since they were need at the frontline and cost was probably not worth it. I doubt to get a CGUE to use handheld beam weapons is just a battery swap.

Alot of this felt like a homage to the 1YW UC time. They even brought back the Black3Stars

What the GuAIZ had in firepower, the CGUE absolutely surpassed in sheer style.
Also better weapons in terms on usability the beam claws had to be changed for railguns for a reason

The Xist custom CGUE actually does have a model kit, unfortunately it doesn't have the assault shroud w/ it. Not a bad kit though.
@xnflg3074 that is strange. Even the insert color guide has the custom on it, yet the kit itself is "just the base in his colors."
