You are 100% correct. Iron Maiden was always known as a sober band that spent their time perfecting their music instead of drinking and drugging. We can now see how it has paid off for them to still be able to perform at the highest level for over 40+ years. They will go down in history as one of the greatest live bands of all time.

Please do empire of the clouds, I know it's almost 20 mins but it's such a beautiful song, also watch the lyric version with the history of R101 between those guitar solos, you'll really feel the story come alive. Above all else, Bruce, the singer, played piano throughout and was also going through throat cancer too.
band was born drummer 1952, singer in 58 and rest 1956 and 57 so they were in their 40s in 2001. still playing. singer out with the mandrake project just turned 66.
No wonder you haven't heard this song before. It's as comparatively recent as 1998. Also, it was originally recorded with another singer, Blaze Bayley. Because in 1993, Bruce Dickinson assumed that heavy metal no longer had a future - you may remember the so called "alternative" scene that supposedly reigned supreme at the time - so he left Iron Maiden. He later came to see the error of his ways, and rejoined them in 1999. In the meantime, Iron Maiden had made two albums with Blaze Bayley (who thankfully went on to be a celebrated solo artist), and unlike many bands in a similar situation, there was NO WAY that Iron Maiden was going to let the returning singer ignore their material with another singer. Bassist and main man Steve Harris in particular was adamant about this (and to his credit, Bruce really did not mind). Three songs in particular from these two late 90s albums have remained live favorites to this day. The hit single "Man on the edge", the EPIC "Sign of the cross" - and this song. "The clansman" is yet another example of bassist Steve Harris' songwriting genius and is based on the movie "Braveheart", that had been a massive success three years prior. On another note: yes, guitarist Janick Gers, "Mr Raggedy Jeans" himself, retains, even in his 60s, his amazing agility. Mainly because he's literally unable to play guitar without running around like a madman - one of my sources tells me that he does this even in the studio. And, I bet Donna in particular would be interested to know that his former employer was none other than Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan. As a matter of fact, the whole of Iron Maiden retain a level of energy onstage that many a younger band would envy them. Not least Steve Harris himself, who at his most recent trip to Sweden Rock Festival (only last year) played one concert with his hobby band, got off stage to play soccer for hours, slept on the tour bus and woke up the next day to kick ass for a whole two and a half hour set with Iron Maiden. Steve is not only an iconic role model for all us bass players, he's also one of the most tireless, relentless rock'n'roll people there ever was.
This concert has two songs from the Blaze Bailey era; this and 'Sign of the Cross'. Bruce absolutely crushes both. Now Blaze Bailey seems like a genuinely nice man and was given an opportunity that no sane person would ever turn down, but he simply was NOT the right choice to replace Bruce. The only person who could have done it was (allegedly) Steve's original choice, Damien Wilson.
That is such a weird way to spin this?! '' Because in 1993, Bruce Dickinson assumed that heavy metal no longer had a future - you may remember the so called "alternative" scene that supposedly reigned supreme at the time - so he left Iron Maiden. Hi! Nice reaction again :) Have you considered reacting to some Maiden live performance in 2020's? They still sound pretty good nowadays. I would recommend some live performance of a song Alexander the Great. They played that song live last year first time ever and it was released 1986. Awesome song!
The lyrics for 'The Clansman' were inspired by the Mel Gibson movie 'Braveheart'... based on the life of Scottish knight Sir William Wallace, who led the Scottish clans to revolt against the British rule of the cruel English King Edward I in the first war for Scotland's independence in the late 1200's.

I farted at an Iron Maiden concert once (only the once mind) many years ago. It was so bad (good) even Iron Maiden smelled it. I was in row B between Dave Murray (the blonde headed chap) and Bruce (the singer). I was very pleased, but most of the people around me weren't very happy and some said some unpleasant things to me as I waved it about (I think they were very rude). Even Iron Maiden themselves looked rather disgruntled. But at least they weren't rude to me like the audience members was.
I've always considered this the go to modern Iron Maiden performance. Now I'm feeling nauseous from the rapid passing of time since you pointed out that this is 23 old now!

The studio version of 'The Clansman' by Iron Maiden was sung in 1998 by singer Blaze Bayley on the maligned album 'Virtual XI'... Bayley replaced Bruce Dickinson (vocals) after he quit the band in 1993... but Maiden fans hated the gruff vocal delivery of Blaze Bayley and Iron Maiden's record sales and concert attendance suffered between 1995 to 1998. In 1999, Iron Maiden were left w/ no choice but to fire Blaze Bayley and offered Bruce Dickinson and guitarist Adrian Smith to reunite w/ the band for a tour and the new album 'Brave new world' in 2000... This performance in 2001 was filmed at Rock in Rio festival in Brazil. Bruce Dickinson has sung Iron Maiden songs in concert recorded originally by vocalist Paul Di'Anno... like - 'Wrathchild' ... 'Running free' ... 'Iron Maiden' ... 'Killers'... etc. And he had no problem singing some of Blaze Bayley's Maiden songs, like - 'The Clansman'... 'Man on the edge'... 'Futureal'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥
