I don't know what "other people" are saying about "the bathtub scene" online, but since it's the central visual metaphor of the entire movie, it can't very well be ignored. It's there for a very good reason. "Saltburn" repeatedly announces that (on an obvious genre level, at least) it's a gothic vampire horror-comedy combined with what appears at first to be a summertime coming-of-age schoolboy romance ("Dracula" meets "Brideshead Revisited" -- and a few other obvious reference points that reveal themselves as the movie goes along) about love/lust/desire for another person and all that person seems to embody: beauty, charm, privilege, wealth, ease, charisma, property... Vampirism is a metaphor for all that. Is it "love?" Well, it's certainly one element. The movie starts with Oliver (before we even know who he is), proclaiming (as the movie's apparent first-person narrator), "I wasn't in love with him." From that moment on, the movie explores just how complicated and (self-)deceptive and subjective and inadequate such a seemingly simple-minded statement really is. Love often involves wanting to possess -- to ingest, to devour -- the qualities in someone else that we feel we lack, and that's essentially what's going on in "the bathtub scene." It's the whole movie in a single image. Everything else spirals around that drain...

this is so beautifully worded i feel like i don’t even deserve to have it on my silly little video 😭 i love every point! in retrospect, i don’t really want it to be ignored as much as i want to be considered alongside the rest of the movie, which i think you justify immaculately lol. ty for commenting!!

I didn't like this movie. The performances were great. The cinematography was great. It was well cast. That just made it all the more frustrating when the movie didn't say anything or go anywhere interesting. Also, you don't actually explain anything in this video. I watched this because I was genuinely hoping you'd give me a cogent explanation for some themes or message I missed, but when for example discussing the bathtub scene you just say (paraphrasing) "people don't get it, it's frustrating that people don't get it, because, obviously it's important, and people don't get that" Like what don't I get? What's important? That the scene is supposed to tell me he is crazy? Yeah, we all get that, I just don't think the theme of "oh, he's just nuts" is interesting or deep. If you have some deeper insight please actually explain what that is.

hiii this is very fair and i really appreciate that!! to be honest with you, i used to script my videos in advance but felt like i was sacrificing a lot of my personality when focusing on a cohesive argument so i ditched that in an attempt to make things more casual and entertaining. my frustration with the general response to the bathtub scene was mainly that it seemed to dismiss everything i really appreciated about the movie. i would’ve liked if people looked beyond the fact that it was crazy and considered its place in the story. but you’re right, i do not have much more to say other than “he’s nuts,” and that is not tremendously interesting LOL. my videos are usually watched by, like, the same five people in my friend group and if i’d anticipated this reaching as many people as it did i would’ve clarified that my primary objective with this was to be silly about a current obsession of mine LOL. but i really appreciate your input and i’m sorry that i misled you and wasted your time! will definitely work on that in future vids :)

@@kachowtori No worries, that makes sense. Just to be clear when said "I just don't think the theme of "oh, he's just nuts" is interesting or deep" I was criticising the movie, not your review. I loved Promising Young Woman too, and I really wanted to like this movie which is why I've been combing YT reviews hoping someone could point out something I missed, haha.

Well, I think it's important first because it marks the beginning of the real movie and because, yes we realise that he's not well and we can expect whatever happens after it. Also he physically shows us his goal , to possess his idol to ultimately become him. Weird yes, but that is my take.

0:43 was so funny I just had to stick around and watch the whole video. This video came up home page because I have been going down a rabbit hole watching all the Saltburn commentary/analysis videos. I really liked your take because yes the bathtub scene was surprising but like there is so much more to the movie I was tired of hearing about it. Maybe I just read too much Ao3 so it's harder to shock me but I felt the scene was effective and necessary but like... not the only notable thing about the movie. I went into this movie only knowing the information given in the trailer and thought from the start it was going to be very similar to The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and... it was very very similar but yet so distinctly different. I haven't watched any of the interviews so I don't know if Emerald Fennell says she was inspired by The Talented Mr. Ripley but if you haven't seen that movie I think you should! Anyway loved your video you got a new subscriber and can't wait to check out your music stuff! Happy New Year!!! :D

Hii im only discovering your video on Saltburn and i need to say, YES, they kinda missed the point.
Ollie is messed up, the bathtub scene shows us but its more than that, it tells us that he literally wants to eat Felix, it tells us that he desires him in a worshipping way but we know that he also hates him because Oliver could never be Felix.
In my opinion, all the sexual charged scenes (to refer to them in some way) were serving a purpose. It was Oliver claiming control over the other person. That is why we have him commanding Venetia after he eats her out, why he influences Elspeth so much after telling her she looks beautiful (or whatever words he used, i just watched the movie one time lol), and the reason why he got into Farleighs sheets, Oliver was showing domination.
And you know what? He couldn't do that to Felix.
Not a kiss, not a touch because he couldn't control or be Felix.
I am an accounting student so don't take me too seriously but those are my two cents kskssk

You should try an old masterpiece directed by Harold Prince and with a young Angela Lansbury, and a young Michael York as an Oliver: SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE, it's free here on UA-cam. It's a bad copy but I think you'll be surprised how siimilar the plots are. And more than the plots too. Oh, and the ending is also creepy in a different way.
